The Hollywood superstars completed a stunning takeover at SToK Racecourse back in the spring of 2021. They have experienced an emotional roller coaster since then, with the pain of Wembley and play-off defeats being countered by the joy of a record-breaking promotion back into the Football League.

Sir Elton knows all about the stresses of club ownership from his time as chairman of Watford, but believes Reynolds and McElhenney will be loving the ride. The music industry icon has told : “It’s great and I phoned Ryan when they won and they got promoted and I just think it’s fantastic. They’re on the ride that I was on. It’s slightly different because times have changed but it’s no more un-exciting… it’s so exciting for them. I bet they have more fun doing that than any movie they’ve ever made.”

Watford climbed into the top tier of English football during Sir Elton’s time at the helm, finishing as runners-up behind Liverpool in 1983, and reached the FA Cup final in 1984 – losing 2-0 to Everton at Wembley Stadium.

Dempsey gives exclusive Berhalter interviewBelieves Copa America is make-or-break for USMNT bossSays 'questions' will come about if bad performances arriveWHAT HAPPENED?

On the set of with CBS Sports Soccer, Dempsey spoke to the Daily Mail about Berhalter's current form with the USMNT. The ex-striker believes, now, that the next year will define the American's time with the USA – NOT – the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The result of that tournament is in the past, and this is a new era for his squad, meaning they can only look forward.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Berhalter's performances of late have put him under the scrutiny of many after falling to Germany in an international friendly in October, and then suffering an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Trinidad and Tobago in the Concacaf Nations League in November. Now, with the biggest tournament of 2024 upon him, Dempsey believes that Copa America could define his tenure with the USMNT.

WHAT DEMPSEY SAID

"I think Copa America is truly how you're going to be graded for the team,' Dempsey told Mail Sport, 'And, you know, for the coaches, are we doing the right thing? Because you're not gonna get another bigger opportunity to do well in the World Cup on home soil in 2026. So if you do well in [the Copa America] and you're building towards something, then that's great. But if you're not, I think there's still time to change things if you need to.
"You don't do well, then you're always on the chopping block,' Dempsey added. "That's what comes with every job, right? If you're not performing, the question starts to be asked. So I think there's still time to show what you can do. But I think Copa America is going to be a huge test for this team and for this coach in terms of where we're going."

WHAT NEXT FOR THE USMNT?

The USSF have scheduled an international friendly against Slovenia for January 20, with the first test of the year for Berhalter and co. being against the EURO 2024 side. For now, though, Berhalter will be having his eyes on his player's club performances, especially that of Ricardo Pepi, who notched a stoppage-time winner for PSV in the Champions League Wednesday.

James Maddison, Tyler Adams and the relegated stars Premier League clubs should be queuing up to sign in the summer transfer window

They may have struggled this season, but Southampton, Leicester and Leeds have plenty of talented players to sell this summer

The Premier League relegation battle is done and dusted, then, and boy did it get nervy. Southampton went early, and Leeds' fate was sealed early enough on the final day too, as they were battered by Tottenham.

For Leicester, though, there was hope and there was despair. There was light at the end of the tunnel, and then darkness when the final whistle came. Everton's win over Bournemouth condemned the Foxes, who become only the second Premier League winning club, after Blackburn in 1999, to drop into the Championship.

For all three relegated clubs, the consequences of falling into the second tier are huge. Managers will lose their jobs, fan will ask questions, there will be staff cuts and, in the case of Leicester in particular, serious financial issues will loom large.

Players, too, face uncertain futures. Relegation may be an occupational hazard for professionals, but it is still a stain on the CV, one which can and will impact their career thereafter.

There are, though, some extremely talented footballers who could now find themselves available this summer. And if any of these players are on the market, expect there to be plenty of clubs queuing up to sign them…

GettyJames Maddison

There is a case to say that Leicester possess the best collection of players ever relegated from the Premier League. Maddison, undoubtedly, is the jewel in their crown, and it is inconceivable that the England midfielder could be playing in the Championship next season.

With 10 goals and nine assists this season, the 26-year-old will surely have his eye on a summer move, even if the Foxes beat the drop.

Would suit: Anyone looking for more attacking output from midfield/the No.10 position. Tottenham could do a lot worse, and Newcastle are long-time admirers. Arsenal have been in the past, but do they really need him now?

AdvertisementGetty ImagesJames Ward-Prowse

Another England international who has carried the creative and goalscoring burden for his side, Ward-Prowse probably should have moved on a couple of years back, but at 28 the time has surely come for a change of scenery.

His set-piece prowess alone would garner interest, but he is also a solid all-round performer, a consistent presence, a good passer and a terrific professional. After over 400 games, he will leave St Mary's a hero, despite relegation.

Would suit: A team in need of consistent performers and solid characters. Tottenham perhaps, or West Ham when Declan Rice leaves?

GettyWilly Gnonto

Quite how the Italy international has found himself in and out of a Leeds side that has spent most of the season in the mire is anyone's guess, but one thing's for sure; Gnonto won't be at Elland Road next season.

At 19, this is a seriously-gifted young wide player, one capable of playing at the very highest level. He might not have consistency in his game yet, but it only needs a bit of careful coaching to bring that out, surely? Gnonto would improve just about every squad in the Premier League, and plenty of starting XIs.

Would suit: Assuming he were to stay in England, then Newcastle, Brighton and Aston Villa would be strong options. Plenty of Serie A clubs would love him, too.

GettyRomeo Lavia

Lavia's first full season in professional football may have ended in disappointment, but there is no doubt that the 19-year-old has furthered his reputation in a big way since his move to Southampton from Manchester City last summer.

Sharp, technically excellent and smart tactically, the Belgian teenager is destined for bigger and better things, with a host of clubs already very enamoured.

Would suit: Just about any top club looking to add quality. Liverpool and Chelsea could do far worse, and City have a buy-back clause which comes into operation next year.

United return to Premier League action on Saturday when they take on Burnley.

Vinicius Junior inspires another win! Real Madrid winners, losers and ratings as La Liga frontrunners beat Sevilla

The Brazilian was integral to another victory for Carlo Ancelotti's men, as Real Madrid extended their advantage atop their division.

It was a frustrating evening at times for Real Madrid but the reigning La Liga champions preserved their unbeaten record with a 3-1 win against Sevilla on Saturday.

Vinicius Junior was the inspiration with two assists to get the home team over the line.

He combined nicely with Luka Modric to get the league leaders up and running early on with a goal after just five minutes and both went on to put on fine individual displays.

Erik Lamela gave the visitors a fighting chance with a goal in the second half, but Vinicius Junior grabbed a second excellent assist to restore his team's lead.

Federico Valverde then wrapped up the win with a long-distance goal he had no right scoring as his side ensured they are still unbeaten after 11 matches in the Spanish top-flight.

The win sees Madrid move six points clear of Barcelona ahead of the latter's clash against Athletic Club on Sunday.

GettyThe Winners

Luka Modric:

Found the space inside the box to tap in the opening goal and could have scored another. The Croatia midfielder is 37 years old but plays like an energetic and determined youngster.

Gonzalo Montiel:

Picked up a yellow card for chopping down Vinicius Junior outside the box but other than that it was a solid display from the right-back. Reaped the rewards for his hard work and sharp passes when he won the ball from Vinicius Junior and played a lovely ball through to Erik Lamela for the equaliser. Minutes later he won the ball and drove forward before finding Lamela but the Argentine's effort missed the target.

Vinicius Junior:

Two assists for the Brazilian star. He was a threat from beginning to end and was always determined to carve something out for his team. He now has five goals and three assists to his name in La Liga this season.

AdvertisementGettyThe Losers

Ivan Rakitic:

The midfielder offered nothing to Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabeu. His passing was sloppy and his defensive work non-existent. A really tame performance from the veteran.

Yassine Bounou:

The Sevilla goalkeeper had a tough night with the likes of Vinicius Junior and Valverde coming at him. He was hopeless as Vinicius Junior squared to Lucas Vazquez for Madrid's second and should have done better, but there was nothing he could do about Valverde's stunning effort.

Dani Carvajal:

The right-back offered nothing to Madrid throughout the game until he was taken off. Definitely the weak link in the starting XI and Carlo Ancelotti was vindicated for taking him off as his replacement, Vazquez, scored just two minutes after he came on.

GettyReal Madrid Ratings: Defence

Thibaut Courtois (6/10):

Had to be on alert as Sevilla were able to push up and look like threatening the Madrid goal, but most of their shots were from distance. He will feel he could have done better to deny Lamela for the equaliser as it was a tough finish from the winger.

Dani Carvajal (5/10):

A weak performance from the right-back. He made some dodgy tackles and could have given away a penalty early on when he knocked Erik Lamela to the ground but got away with it. Offered little to Madrid's attack.

Eder Militao (7/10):

Another solid performance from the centre-back. He was instrumental in keeping Sevilla at a safe distance and ensuring they could not get into a good scoring position for most of the match.

David Alaba (6/10):

A decent performance from the Austrian, who held the line perfectly well with Militao and made some good passes throughout the match. Was eventually shifted to left-back when Antonio Rudiger came on.

Ferland Mendy (6/10):

Overall a decent performance from the left-back. He is always available in attack and even drifts inside to offer a central threat. Defensively not bad but he did put his side under pressure in the second half when he held on to the ball too long and let three Sevilla players swarm around him.

GettyMidfield

Luka Modric (8/10):

The Croatian veteran was one of the best on the field, not only for the goal he scored. His passing was good yet again and he helped Madrid threaten the visitors throughout.

Aurelien Tchouameni (7/10):

Another fine performance from the young midfielder before he was taken off just 20 minutes into the second half.

Toni Kroos (6/10):

A quiet performance from the German. Playing quite deep in midfield, his passes were accurate but rather ineffective.

China Women's World Cup 2023 squad: Who's in & who's out?

Who has coach Shui Qingxia selected in China Women's World Cup squad? GOAL takes a look…

The China national women's team will be playing in their eighth FIFA World Cup finals in July, which will be held in Australia and New Zealand.

Shui Qingxia's troops are the reigning Asian champions and qualified directly for the tournament.

In 1999, they finished as runners-up, which is their best performance to date and in this edition, they would like to create history by lifting the World Cup.

In the 2023 Women's World Cup, they have been drawn in Group D with Denmark, England and Haiti.

Who has made Qingxia's final 23-player World Cup squad? GOAL takes a look…

(C)Getty ImagesGOALKEEPERS

Xu Huan is the undisputed number one for China between the sticks. The 24-year-old keeper of Jiangsu LFC is the most-trusted lieutenant of Qingxia under the bar and should have the gloves in the World Cup.

Meanwhile, Zhu Yu should be the second-choice keeper. She was given an opportunity to impress against Sweden and claim the No. 1 spot but conceded four goals in that match which saw Xu brought back against Ireland.

Meanwhile, the fight for the third spot should go to experienced keeper Zhao Lina of Shanghai Shengli.

Qinxia sets her team up with a four-woman backline. They generally play deep to keep things tight at the back.

Their efforts paid dividends in the 2022 Asian Cup as they conceded just five goals in the entire tournament. It would not be surprising if they defend with two banks of four to frustrate the likes of England and Denmark.

Paris Saint-Germain's Li Mengwen, on-loan from Jiangsu, should be the first choice at right-back. And if Mengwen is unfit, Gao Chen can slot in her place.

The likes of Duo Jiaxing, Yao Wei and Wang Linlin are among the first-choice centre-backs.

Chen Qiaozhu should be fielded in the left-back position.

It is primarily a four-woman midfield with Yao Lingwei entrusted with the responsibility to break down attacks and act as a defensive screener. She is supported by Zhang Rui, who has the license to go forward and join the attack.

Yang Lina is another option who can sit back and absorb the pressure. She will be useful against offensive teams when China will most likely sit deep and maintain their shape, with Zhang Linyan usually deployed on the left.

The likes of Wu Chengshu and Shen Mengyu add further depth in midfield.

Getty ImagesFORWARDS

China's veteran forward Wang Shanshan is the key player of the squad. The forward has close to 150 caps and scored over 50 goals.

She is one of those rare players who can play at both ends of the pitch with aplomb. In the 2022 AFC Asian Cup she was fielded as a centre-back in the semi-final and final, and yet she came out with flying colours.

Shanshan was named as the Chinese Women's Footballer of the Year in 2022, and her presence will be key in what will be her third World Cup.

Wang Shuang has over 120 international caps and has scored 43 goals for China. Her scathing pace along with her dribbling abilities make her a potent threat in the wide areas.

Tang Jiali can be the X-factor in the Chinese team as she boasts of having spent the previous 18 months in Europe with both Tottenham and Madrid CFF, becoming the first female Chinese player to play in England.

She has the vision to split open defences and is strong on both feet, making her an exceptional talent in attacking.

Banglawash threat looms over India

After whitewashing Zimbabwe and Pakistan in their last two home ODI series, Bangladesh will complete a hat-trick if they beat India in the third ODI in Mirpur

The Preview by Alagappan Muthu in Mirpur23-Jun-2015Match factsWednesday, June 24, 2015
Start time 1500 local (0900 GMT)3:02

Isam: Bangladesh are playing attacking cricket

Big pictureFrom the outside looking in, Bangladesh trouncing Zimbabwe 5-0 barely caused a blip. There was perhaps a double-take when Pakistan were served 3-0. If they whitewash India on Wednesday, the world will sit up and notice. The 14 men and the support staff on tour here already have. MS Dhoni has admitted his team was outplayed. He has wrestled questions on his captaincy, even bristled momentarily when the critique moved onto selection. R Ashwin, another player of the ‘keep calm’ variety, seemed to feel he was behind enemy lines at the pre-match press conference. He felt compelled to remind everyone that India had won 75% of their matches this season. Whether that was because of the scoreline of the series or the brutal spotlight that is on the team is debatable, but it was clear to see it does have issues to sort out. Besides the headache of why the batsmen who are touted to front up for the 2019 World Cup are misfiring all at once.A lot of the credit should go to Bangladesh. They have won key moments and ensured the momentum never dissipated. There is a pack mentality readily visible among the quicks. So much that India’s batsmen haven’t had any room to breathe. They have been bowled out twice, and the best partnership they have put on – one among only four that have crossed fifty – has been 95.”They’ve owned the Mirpur stadium,” was Ashwin’s assessment. New faces like Mustafizur Rahman, Soumya Sarkar and Litton Das have fit neatly into the one-day structure, while the old faithful Shakib Al Hasan and Mashrafe Mortaza have continued contributing. An 11th win on the trot at home would be the perfect way for them to sign-off in front of the loud, colourful and unabashedly partisan Mirpur crowd.Form guideBangladesh: WWWWW (last five matches, most recent first)

India: LLLWWIn the spotlightWith the squad bursting with performers, Mushfiqur Rahim hasn’t had much to do. He did seal the series with a sparkly cameo that indicated he was finding his best touch again. But perhaps he might like to put in a more substantial performance, considering the scrutiny over his wicketkeeping lately.Shikhar Dhawan has had a decent tour so far. He has restated his case for Test selection, and has taken home a half-century from the second ODI. What he and the rest of the India batting line-up haven’t been able to do is set up a big total. India have spoken about playing freely, a mandate Dhawan quite likes.Team newsBangladesh have added the legspinner Jubair Hossain to their squad for the third ODI. “”He was taken to increase the bowling options,” Faruque Ahmed, the chief selector, told ESPNcricinfo. “We will have a look at the wicket tomorrow and take a call on him.”Bangladesh (probable): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Soumya Sarkar, 3 Litton Das/ Mominul Haque/ Rony Talukdar, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 5 Shakib Al Hasan, 6 Sabbir Rahman, 7 Nasir Hossain, 8 Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), 9 Rubel Hossain/Jubair Hossain, 10 Mustafizur Rahman, 11 Taskin AhmedAjinkya Rahane opted to train yesterday after being dropped for the last ODI. The rest of the team went through “a couple of quiet days,” Ashwin said. The morale isn’t as high as it normally is within the Indian camp.India (probable): 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Ambati Rayudu/ Ajinkya Rahane/ Stuart Binny, 5 Suresh Raina 6 MS Dhoni (capt &wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Axar Patel, 11 Dhawal KulkarniPitch and conditionsEvery day of play on tour has contained the threat of rain, and the trend doesn’t look to be changing. The players trained under cloudy skies on the eve of the match as well. As far as the pitch is concerned, there might not be much change. It is expected to be a touch slow.Stats and trivia Bangladesh will have 11 consecutive wins at home if they win the third ODI. That will leave them one short of the record held jointly by Pakistan (2000-03), West Indies (1986-89) and Australia (2003-04). This is the fifth time Bangladesh have won five or more consecutive ODIs, the longest being a nine-match streak in 2006. Bangladesh have currently won five back-to-back ODIs – three against Pakistan and two against India. Before this series, India had only lost one match to Bangladesh in a bilateral ODI series (Dhaka, 2004). They have already lost two ODIs in this series.Quotes”If there is no counter, then what can we do? Can we kidnap him?”
“We spoke in the dressing-room just before going out to training [on Tuesday]. We have told to be as serious as we would be if we had lost the first two games. We will not give an inch.”

Ten times Mourinho slammed Man Utd players this season

The United boss' threat to make a string of changes against Bournemouth is just the latest public jab at his players. Here are 10 memorable examples

Getty Images"Oh my God! They should all explain the lack of attitude!"

After the 2-1 loss at Huddersfield which first cut them significantly adrift of Manchester City in October, Mourinho complained about his players' lack of attitude.

“[Huddersfield] played like I like, and how it has to be. They played with everything: aggression, desire, motivation, sacrifice. They played with everything, and we didn’t.

“They beat us on attitude. When I lose matches I like to lose matches because the opponent was better than us, and had more quality than us. When you lose a football match because of attitude, that’s really bad.

“I heard that Ander Herrera is in the flash interviews and he’s saying that the attitude and the desire was poor. Oh my God! When a player says that, and when a player feels that, I think they should all go to the press conference and explain why because I can’t explain.”

AdvertisementGetty/Goal"He was disappearing"

The writing was on the wall for Henrikh Mkhitaryan at Manchester United after he was left out of a string of fixtures in the autumn. When asked about the Armenian's absence, Mourinho didn't hold back with his assessment.

“I was not happy with his last performances and I am not speaking about one or two, I am speaking about three, four or five. He started the season very well and after that step by step he was disappearing.

"His performance levels in terms of goalscoring, assists, high pressing, recovery of the ball high up the pitch, bringing the team with him as a number 10, were decreasing step by step.

“There came a time when that was enough because the others work to have a chance, everybody works to have a chance, so it’s as simple as that.”Michael Regan"Some players will make childish decisions their whole careers"

United threw away two points in December with the late concession of a goal to Harry Maguire at Leicester City in a 2-2 draw despite having earlier dominated. Maguire's ability to capitalise on the space left by an injured Chris Smalling infuriated Mourinho, who blamed his "childish" players for not reacting.

“I had the chance to speak to Ashley Young and to tell him the way the team had to be in position because of Smalling’s difficulty. But I think [there was] a lack of maturity because I cannot stop the game and give a team talk for the last two minutes. The players have to immediately adapt and to read the game, which they didn’t.

“So we had childish decisions in front of goal, bad decisions. Not just goals we missed, but also easy decisions to make… Some players they have childish decisions and time helps them to have maturity. But some players stay with childish decisions until the end of their careers.”ENJOYED THIS STORY?

Getty Images"Four mistakes after 15 seconds"

It took Christian Eriksen less than 11 seconds to score the opening goal against United in January, and following the eventual 2-0 Tottenham win Mourinho spoke of his fury at the string of mistakes his players made in the build-up to the first goal.

“I don’t think it’s very normal to concede a goal after 15 seconds. After kick-off is ridiculous, especially ridiculous because the players watched it beforehand. We analyse opponents, we work on opponents’ dynamic and routines, the players knew the long ball, they knew Harry Kane, they knew everything.

“And then we don’t press the ball: one mistake. We don’t win the ball in the air: second mistake. We don’t win the second ball on the ground: third mistake. We don’t cover the full-back inside when Eriksen comes: four mistakes. Four mistakes after 15 seconds and you are losing 1-0 against a good team.”

Lionel Messi is Mr. Reliable! PSG winners, losers & ratings as Argentina star steps up with Mbappe & Neymar out

Lionel Messi scored a second-half winner against Toulouse on Saturday to lift the Ligue 1 leaders in the absence of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

Lionel Messi lurked for most of Paris Saint-Germain's contest against Toulouse. He floated around, enjoyed a few touches, and served as an unnerving presence, more a warning than an attacking threat.

But then, he came to life. As he always does. With PSG locked at 1-1 with the mid-table side, Messi drifted towards the top of the box, and whipped a loose ball into the bottom corner.

Messi has scored that goal countless times. And on this occasion, it lifted PSG to a vital Ligue 1 win.

Toulouse took the lead inside 20 minutes, with Branco van den Boomen sweeping a free kick past a wrong-footed Gianluigi Donnarumma.

PSG struggled for a creative spark in the fitness-related absence of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, with Lionel Messi a peripheral figure in the early goings. Achraf Hakimi provided a moment of magic, though, firing into the bottom corner from 20 yards out to equalise.

Things changed in the second half, with Messi inevitably popping up with the goal to put his side ahead. Hakimi laid the ball off to the World Cup winner just outside the box, who curled his shot past a helpless goalkeeper.

Toulouse had one clear chance late on, but Donnarumma equaled a scrappy effort after a scramble in the box. And it was all about Messi in the end, the Argentine stepping up in the absence of Mbappe and Neymar, dragging PSG to the finish line.

Getty ImagesThe Winners

Achraf Hakimi:

On a day where PSG lacked creativity from their attacking players, Hakimi stepped up. He scored PSG's equaliser, cutting onto his weaker left foot before curling his effort into the far corner. Hakimi often found himself the furthest man forward, pushing down the right wing and stretching the Toulouse back-line. It was never likely to be a tricky defensive game for the Morocco international, and he made sure to impact play at the other end.

Lionel Messi:

Inevitable, wasn't it? Everything seemed primed for one of games for Messi. Neymar and Mbappe out, the team struggling to create, a dogged defensive opponent. And so it continued, with Toulouse keeping Messi quiet for long stretches. The goal, predictably, came. It was a vintage Messi strike, curled into the far corner from just outside the box, with no space to work with. The World Cup winner had little further impact on the game, but it didn't really matter. Their Argentine magician had done it. What a player.

Warren Zaire-Emery:

Rarely is a player so young so composed. Zaire-Emery became PSG's second-youngest ever Ligue 1 scorer with a calm finish midweek, and he built on that on Saturday. Yes, PSG have midfield injury problems. But the 16-year-old Zaire Emery was brought on for the misfiring Carlos Soler with 15 minutes remaining in a tight game — a clear indication of his manager's trust. This wasn't a flawless performance from the youngster – he looked a bit lost in more advanced positions – but every minute on the pitch is crucial for a player who looks increasingly ready to fulfil his potential as one of the world's best teenagers.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesThe Losers

Renato Sanches:

PSG manager Christophe Galtier really seems to like Sanches. The Portuguese midfielder played under him at Lille last year, and he's started to show signs of the midfielder many expected him to be when he burst onto the scene as a teenager. His PSG career, though, has been marred by time spent on the sidelines. The injury bug reared its head again on Saturday. Sanches seemed to clutch his thigh and was in tears as he walked off the pitch after just 11 minutes. At the very least, it's encouraging that Sanches could help himself off. But he could face more time off the pitch.

Carlos Soler:

In a way, Soler is tasked with a near impossible job. Although PSG change their style without Neymar, Soler is asked to do a similar thing: make runs forward and create in the final third. The issue is, Soler is not Neymar. Galtier, of course, knows this. But the expectation that the Spaniard should make something happen seems to weigh on him. Soler frequently tries to do too much, and some of his quality in the final third is lacking. He was better Saturday than sometimes in the recent past, especially when the game became more stretched. But in the early goings, Soler looked like a weak link. He has been agreeable, if unspectacular, since coming into the side due to a litany of injuries. The dropoff from any of PSG's front three to Soler is glaring, though.

Getty ImagesPSG Ratings: Defence

Gianluigi Donnarumma (6/10):

Wrong footed for Toulouse's opener, but redeemed himself with an impressive save late on.

Achraf Hakimi (8/10):

A memorable showing. Scored the first and assisted the second, and was often the furthest PSG player forward.

Marquinhos (7/10):

Some nice blocks, reliable passes.

Danilo Pereira (6/10):

Solid at the back, even better when moved to the no.6

Nuno Mendes (5/10):

Still working his way back to full fitness. Could've been sent off for a rash challenge when already on a yellow.

Fabian Ruiz (5/10):

The pair butted heads before and after the 2022 World Cup, with their feud getting personal at one stage as Reyna’s family got involved. Questions were asked of whether the duo could work together again after Berhalter was reappointed as USMNT boss.

He has called upon Reyna since picking up the reins and handed him a starting berth in a friendly date with Germany. Lalas has told his podcast of whether an unfortunate saga can be considered closed: “I think Gregg Berhalter kind of put out a fig leaf if you will and said: 'Yeah, not only do I believe in you, but I believe in starting you against Germany’. I think that Gio after that first half doesn't look worse for wear – as a matter of fact I think looks better. And maybe people are even more confident. And I think Gregg kind of gets to assume the position of letting bygones be bygones and going forward.

"Now, don't think for a second that there isn't always going to be baggage and history relative to these two. But what you hope is that it dissipates enough where they can go on and they can function in these types of settings.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Berhalter has been trying to sweep the issue under the carpet, with the United States coach telling reporters when inevitably asked about a supposed divide in the camp: “I know that's going to be on people's mind. What I'd say is that we're moving forward. [I don't] really want to talk too much about the past. I think it's about talking about the future.”
