No fim, alguns atletas ensaiaram pênaltis.

Pedrinho e Marcos Paulo disputam a vaga.

O São Paulo deverá jogar com Rafael; Nathan, Beraldo, (Alan Franco e Caio; Méndez, Pablo Maia (Nestor) e Galoppo; Pedrinho (Marcos Paulo), Calleri e Wellington Rato.

India, Australia brace for the unknowns at the WTC final

Teams have to navigate through complexities of playing a five-day match for the world title barely a week after the IPL ends

Andrew McGlashan13-Mar-20232:44

What could India’s XI look like for the WTC final?

India are planning to equip their Test bowlers with the Dukes ball during the IPL so they have a chance to practice with it ahead of the World Test Championship with the crammed schedule providing challenges of how to prepare to face Australia at the Oval. The final will take place from June 7 for 11 (with June 12 as a reserve day) which means the game starts barely a week after the IPL final is expected to take place, but Test captain Rohit Sharma hoped his pace attack would be able to tune up.”We’re sending some new Dukes balls to all the fast bowlers as well to get them some time with that,” he said. “All of us have played in that part of the world so I don’t think it’s going be a huge problem. But, yeah, I believe in preparation, and preparation again is going to be key for us come the finals.”India were confirmed as Australia’s opponents when New Zealand secured a thrilling two-wicket win off the final ball of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Christchurch as the players were taking lunch in Ahmedabad.”I’m just being honest, we certainly did [follow it] today,” India coach Rahul Dravid told Star Sports. “More from the point of view it was getting really tight and close out there. It was really exciting to be following that in bits and pieces. We sort of followed it over the last four or five overs… it was lunch time for us.”Both teams will have to navigate the complexities of the calendar which will see the IPL dominate the two months of April and May, but it is accentuated for India with only Cheteshwar Pujara of their likely line-up not involved in the tournament. For the bowlers, meanwhile, operating with the Dukes ball that is used for Tests in England was adopted by the ICC for the first final in 2021 brings with it different challenges compared to the SG or Kookaburra.Related

Rohit also said there would be a close eye kept on bowlers’ workloads during the IPL and he hoped that any Test players involved in the teams who don’t make the finals would be able to travel to England early.”I think it’s quite critical for us,” he said. “We’re going to be in constant touch with all the IPL guys who are going to be part of that final to monitor their workload”Around May 21, there will be six teams who would possibly be out of the IPL. So, whichever players are available, we will try and find some time to see if they can reach the UK as early as possible and get some time there.”Australia missed out on the 2021 final, where New Zealand beat India, due to over-rate penalties and they have admitted in recent months that they have taken this WTC cycle more seriously. They secured their place with dominant home form – much like India – while picking up vital wins on the road in Pakistan, Sri Lanka and this tour.”The guys are really pumped by it, really excited,” Steven Smith said. “We saw India when they came back out on the field just after New Zealand had won…shaking their hands and what have you. So it’s going to be great coming up against India in the final.”The Oval wicket there can take some spin at times, particularly as the game wears on, so it could be interesting in terms of what sort of wicket we get. But it’s a great place to play cricket, there’s usually reasonable bounce and pace for an English wicket, it’s probably as close as you get to Australia potentially in terms of pace and bounce, so it’s going to be a great Test match.”With the final taking place in the first part of June, which is still reasonably early in the UK season, it would be a surprise if there was much on offer for the spinners and Rohit conceded conditions would need some adjustment but was confident they would not be too unknown. The reserve day was needed to complete the first final in 2021 because of rain in Southampton.”A neutral venue for both the teams, [but] both teams have played a lot of cricket in that part of the world,” he said. “I wouldn’t say it will be alien conditions for both teams. But, yes, compared to what it is like for India in India or Australia playing in Australia, it’s not going to be like that. It’s going to be slightly different from that which I’m pretty sure both teams will prepare for it.”

'Always the captain's team' – Shastri

Newly-appointed India coach Ravi Shastri has insisted that his job is only to keep the players in the best frame of mind to perform and that the captain is always in charge

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Jul-20172:11

Timeline: Shastri’s path to India coach

Ravi Shastri is clear on one thing as he takes over the position of India coach from Anil Kumble: the captain is the boss of the team. The coach and his backroom staff, according to the new India coach, are there only to make sure the players are in the right frame of mind to perform at their best.Shastri beat four other candidates to the job and said he only applied for the position having understood the “gravity of the situation” once Kumble stepped down in less than ideal circumstances last month.Shastri was team director just before Kumble was appointed coach last year, and he said he had been disappointed when he was overlooked as head coach in 2016. But after Kumble’s one-year contract expired in June, the BCCI chose not to renew it and instead sent out an advertisement seeking candidates for the position. Kumble himself had been one of the applicants, even though he was told he would be given “direct entry”. Shastri, though, was not.The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) – Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman – tasked with finding India’s next coach told the BCCI that Kumble remained their first choice. But Kumble stepped down after realising the differences between him and the captain Virat Kohli had become “untenable”.It was then that Shastri decided to enter the fray, with the BCCI re-opening the interview process.”I had not really wrapped my head around the gravity of the situation,” Shastri told . “There was nothing personal. I really hadn’t begun to understand the seriousness of this. But when I sat down and gave it a serious thought, I began to tell myself: ‘Here is a unit that I have been part of and enjoyed a great working relationship with. Having been part of the unit that helped it become No. 1, I thought the onus is on me now to make it work again, in the best interests of everybody involved. That’s when I knew it’s time for me to apply again.”According to various individuals from the BCCI and CAC as well as the committee of administrators one big point of difference between Kohli and Kumble was who was the boss.Shastri is more than happy to let the captain take charge. “It’s always the captain’s team and it is the leader who calls the shots. That’s how it has always worked. A coach’s role, effectively speaking, is to stay in the background and let the onus be on the players. The coach and support staff’s role is to get the players in the most brilliant frame of mind to execute things and if done effectively, it brings enjoyment to the player’s game.”Shastri said his relationship with the support staff – both Sanjay Bangar (assistant coach) and R Sridhar (fielding coach) were appointed by him – as well as the positive rapport he has with the players meant he could hit the ground running.”I’m simply going to press the refresh button and begin from where I left. I know what I’m stepping into, players have an idea of what’s coming, so that ticks the first box. Just to give you an idea, I won’t be spending the first six to eight months in the job warming up to the team. That had already been accomplished in my previous stint. This time, it’s going to be about getting on the job from day one.”Although Shastri and Kohli will be the men in command, a new challenge awaits them in the form of Rahul Dravid and Zaheer Khan, who have been appointed as consultants by the BCCI at the behest of the CAC. The CAC felt, with India travelling overseas in the next two years for challenging Test series’ and the 2019 World Cup in England, the players needed experienced specialist hands to ensure success.Asked for his thoughts on working with Dravid and Zaheer, Shastri was optimistic, but hinted he would have the last word on support staff appointments.”In fact, even in my last stint, I had asked people like Rahul and Zaheer to come every now and then,” Shastri told . “I even asked Sachin [Tendulkar] to come at some stage and have a chat with the boys. I always believe that you need a fresh set of ideas. Your core team is meant to do the job for 200 days a year and every now and then, whenever you get some fresh inputs through with the quality of players like Zak (Zaheer) or Rahul it can only be good.”Tomorrow it could be an excellent fielding coach. What stops Jonty Rhodes from coming and having a chat with the boys? Overseas, I could pick the brains of a fast bowler who has bowled very well in those conditions – say in South Africa or Australia. It’s fresh inputs that might trigger off something. I am always open to such kind of ideas.”

Sri Lanka's seniors key in their quest for a spot in WTC final

If there is some chance for SL to pull off an unlikely brace of victories in NZ, it is through their experience

Andrew Fidel Fernando07-Mar-2023

In the last Test series in New Zealand, both sides very clearly went all-out for victory, because that is their Test-match identity. Sri Lanka can perhaps have claimed to have pioneered Bazball, before Baz was even a thing – the likes of Aravinda de Silva and Sanath Jayasuriya having blazed through the late 90s.But right now, Sri Lanka are not a particularly attacking side considering what other teams are doing. And yet, in this series, they will likely push for wins, because there is a chance a 2-0 result in their favour will put them in the World Test Championshp final. It’s an outside chance. India will have to either lose or draw their last Test against Australia for Sri Lanka to even be in contention. There is no rain forecast in Ahmedabad, where the pitch tends to be dry. Australia would likely have to pull off another upset. And then you come to Sri Lanka’s own record in New Zealand. In 19 Tests in the country, they’ve only ever won two (in 2006, most recently). The probability seems remote.Related

Still, it feels like something of an achievement to even be in contention at this late stage. And it certainly is playing on the cricketers’ minds. Here’s New Zealand captain Tim Southee, two days out from the first Test, in Christchurch.”I think Sri Lanka are still in the hunt to make the final of the World Test Championship and they’ve played some great cricket over the past two years to be in that position. For us, we know Sri Lanka are a very good side, and they’ve shown that – to be sitting near the top of the World Test Championship.”They’ve got plenty to play for over the next two weeks. We’re out of the Test Championship.”Sri Lanka’s players have spoken about it too. In an interview with Michael Appleton, New Zealand’s High Commissioner in Sri Lanka, captain Dimuth Karunaratne said this:”It’s must-win games for us, to be in the World Test Championship final. I don’t want to put pressure on the boys, but everyone knows this is a must-win game for us to be in the World Test Championship.”We’re in the top-three right now, so we have one hurdle and everyone knows where we are now. The boys are working hard to win the two Test Championship final and pushing to be in that final.”If there is some chance for Sri Lanka to pull off an unlikely brace of victories, it is perhaps through their experience. Last time they were there, Angelo Mathews and Kusal Mendis batted out an entire day together (the first time a Sri Lankan pair had done this overseas, and the 19th time it had happened overall), to save a Test in Wellington. Both hit hundreds. Karunaratne has a century in Christchurch, and Chandimal has four fifties in nine innings. The attack is much greener, but if the pitches are too, Sri Lanka have bowlers who could potentially trouble New Zealand’s top order, so long as they stay fit through the game (looking at Lahiru Kumara in particular). But it’ll be the batters who will likely have to lead the way. Angelo Mathews, who’s played exactly 100 Tests now, is on his fourth Test tour of New Zealand.”We’ve been playing our brand of cricket and we’ve got quite a lot of experience in New Zealand – myself, Dimuth, and Chandimal,” he said. “We’ve played a few series and know the conditions quite well. It’s a fresh series so we have to start of fresh again.”There will be plenty of balls that will miss the bat, but you have to be positive and look for runs.”

Just Stop Oil protesters disrupt Lord's Ashes Test

Jonny Bairstow removes one of two pitch invaders from playing surface

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Jun-2023The first morning of the second Ashes Test at Lord’s was briefly disrupted by two climate change protesters from the activist group Just Stop Oil, who invaded the pitch carrying orange powder paint but were prevented from reaching the strip by players and security staff. Before the start of the second over, the two men wearing Just Stop Oil t-shirts ran on from the Grandstand, past perimeter security and towards the playing surface. One was prevented from reaching the strip by a combination of Ben Stokes and David Warner before being jumped on by stewards, while the other was picked up and lifted off the pitch by Jonny Bairstow, then taken away by police.MCC groundstaff swept up and blew off the powder paint that had spilled on the outfield, while Bairstow ran to the dressing room to change into a fresh set of whites. Play was delayed by around six minutes in total.A third protester, who did not make it onto the pitch, was also arrested. An MCC spokesperson said: “Following the earlier pitch incursion, three people have been arrested for aggravated trespassing and taken into police custody and it is now a Metropolitan Police matter.”Related

ICC preps back-up pitch for WTC final in case of protestor disruption

Just Stop Oil, a coalition of environmental action groups, have disrupted several high-profile sporting events in the UK over the past 18 months including Premier League football matches, the final of rugby union’s Premiership and the World Snooker Championship.Speaking after play, Warner termed the situation “confronting” and said the priority for the players was protecting the pitch.”We’d been warned beforehand that it might happen,” he said. “In that instance we want to protect our wicket. We saw it in the billiards [snooker] a month or so, so we just wanted to protect the wicket. It’s a touchy situation, you don’t want to be involved in that. But you want to stop them from getting on the wicket.”It’s quite confronting because you don’t know what to do in that situation. Normally you just let [the situation] run its course, but because they could potentially damage the wicket, we felt like we could intervene and not let get them as close as possible.”Josh Tongue, the England seamer, said: “My back was turned at the start so I didn’t see it. And then I think I heard Jonny [Bairstow] shouting, ‘no!’ and saw him running after him. What he did was obviously a good thing, because if they had put the powder onto the wicket, who knows where the game would be now?”

A Just Stop Oil spokesperson said: “Cricket is an important part of our national heritage, but how can we enjoy England vs Australia when much of the cricketing world is becoming unfit for humans to live in? We can no longer afford to distract ourselves when the sports we play, the food we eat, and the culture we cherish is at risk.””It’s time for cricket lovers and all those who understand the severity of this situation, to get onto the streets and demand action from this illegitimate, criminal government. When our children ask us ‘what did we do?’ to avert this crisis, we better have a good answer.”A statement from the group also criticised Lord’s for its sponsorship deal with JP Morgan Chase, the financial services provider, which it described as “the world’s worst ‘fossil bank'”, citing the 2021 report ‘Banking on Climate Chaos’.MCC chief executive Guy Lavender said in a statement: “MCC condemn in the strongest possible terms today’s pitch incursion and the behaviour of the protestors involved.”Their actions not only endanger themselves and those who work at the ground, but they have consistently shown complete disregard for the people who pay to attend events, not just here at Lord’s but around the country at other sporting venues.”Warner and Stokes attempt to stop a Just Stop Oil protester as Bairstow tackles the other•Getty Images

Cricket had been bracing for its first exposure to the group. Groundstaff at The Kia Oval created a back-up pitch for the World Test Championship final on the off-chance protests were able to tamper with the pitch.Ahead of England’s Test against Ireland at Lord’s at the start of this month, MCC stepped up security fearing they would be targeted. While no-one entered the field during the match, protesters held up the England team bus on its way to Lord’s for the first morning.Warwickshire also ramped up security and prepared a spare pitch at Edgbaston during the first Ashes Test, but the match took place without disruption.
