Justin Langer full of 'respect' for Virat Kohli's decision to take paternity leave

“Never ever miss the birth of your children, because it is one of the great things you will ever do”

“Of course it will have an impact,” Australia coach Justin Langer said when asked about Virat Kohli returning home after the first Test in Australia later this year for the birth of his first child. Using an Aussie Rules Football parallel, Langer likened Kohli’s absence to “taking Dustin Martin out of Richmond”, but stressed that even without their captain, India “are a very, very good team” and “we have to be on our toes all summer”.”Are we happy he is not playing? It’s like taking (AFL star) Dustin Martin out of Richmond,” Langer said with a laugh at a press interaction earlier today. “Of course it will have an impact, but we also know that India beat us last time (in 2018-19). They are a very, very good team. We cannot get complacent for a second with or without Virat.”So we are going to have to be on our toes all summer, and we’re looking forward to that.”Kohli and his wife Anushka Sharma are expecting their first child around the turn of the year, and Kohli has asked for – and been granted – paternity leave. The tour will start with three ODIs, followed by three T20Is, with the four-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy played at the end. In a media statement earlier this week, the BCCI confirmed Kohli’s return after the first Test, which will be India’s first day-night Test overseas, but did not specify whether Kohli would rejoin the Indian Test squad at a later stage, though any return would have to negotiate strict quarantine protocols, adding to the time that he would not be available. As far as Langer was concerned, though, taking time off for “one of the great things you will ever do” was worth the sacrifice on Kohli’s part.”Virat Kohli is probably the best player I have ever seen in my life for so many reasons, not only his batting but his energy and passion for the game, the way he fields. I cannot believe he displays the energy he does in everything he does, and I’ve got so much respect for him,” Langer said. “I’ve also got respect for him in the sense that he’s made this decision (to take paternity leave).”He’s a human being like all of us. It’s the same with Kane Richardson. He sacrificed the IPL so that he could be at the birth of his son a couple of days ago. So if I was giving advice to any of my players, I would always say never ever miss the birth of your children, because it is one of the great things you will ever do. Virat’s a human being, and I respect his decision.”The Indian contingent – without Rohit Sharma and Ishant Sharma, who are both carrying injuries – reached Sydney from the UAE on Thursday, and have gone into two weeks’ quarantine straightaway.

Player wants to quit Leeds with Steinsson ready to take £18 million loss

Another Leeds United player is looking for a permanent new home away from Elland Road, with technical director Gretar Steinsson ready to take an £18 million loss on his sale.

Leeds pressured into summer sales

The most painful summer exit of this window, and by Leeds' own admission, was that of local sensation Archie Gray – who completed a £40 million move to Tottenham with Joe Rodon heading the other way for £10 million (Fabrizio Romano).

The 18-year-old won over Whites supporters with a flurry of accomplished displays over 52 appearances in all competitions last season, with Leeds releasing a heartbroken statement after Gray's departure.

"Understanding the attraction of Premier League and European football, the club, with a heavy heart, agreed the transfer, but the move has strengthened the board’s resolve to ultimately return Leeds to a position where it can meet the footballing ambitions of even its brightest stars," wrote the club in a statement (via Ben Jacobs).

"Whilst we understand that supporters will be hugely disappointed to lose such a home-grown talent, and a family name so synonymous with Leeds United, the move improves the club’s chance to compete for automatic promotion next season by increasing our ability to build a competitive squad within the league’s financial control regulations.

"Everyone at Leeds United is heartbroken to see one of our own depart and would like to thank Archie for all his efforts and professionalism."

Alongside the highly-rated teenager, both Luis Sinisterra and Marc Roca have sealed permanent moves away from Yorkshire. The three major exits have helped raise £59 million in total for Daniel Farke's side, and these funds will work wonders to balance the books after Leeds narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League.

More look certain to follow the trio, with Crysencio Summerville attracting interest from elite English sides, as expected, following his 21-goal haul in all competitions for Leeds last season.

Meanwhile, USA international Brenden Aaronson, who completed a £28 million move to Leeds in 2022, could be on the move as well.

Aaronson wants to quit Leeds

The 23-year-old made 30 Bundesliga appearances on loan at Union Berlin last season, but the Germans cannot afford a permanent deal for him as things stand.

Leeds, led by technical director Steinsson, value the player at around £10 million, so they're ready to take an £18m loss off his sale this summer. Aaronson is ready to quit Leeds and find a permanent new home, but despite the £10m price tag, Union will still struggle to match it.

That is according to regional source Berliner Kurier, via Sport Witness, and it will be interesting to see if any club are willing to pay the asking price for Aaronson.

“He gets better every day,” said former Leeds boss Jesse Marsch during his tenure (via GOAL). “He's like a weed. You almost see him grow before your eyes. It's really amazing. He's a special young man.

"It's so much just about his ability to make final plays and slow himself down a little bit in the last third. He has more quality than people think. He's a good finisher, he's really clever with how to put passes together in tight spaces.”

Joe Clarke in line for Perth Scorchers BBL deal

The Nottinghamshire batsmen would be cover for Jason Roy who will be on England duty

Joe Clarke, the Nottinghamshire batsman, is set to sign for Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League.Clarke, 23, was the fifth highest run-scorer in this year’s Vitality T20 Blast. His strike-rate – 175.00 runs per 100 balls – was better than anyone else in the top 50 run-scorers in the competition. While he is yet to represent England at senior level and has never previously appeared in a T20 franchise competition, he has long been thought of as one of the most exciting talents in the English game.He made five Championship centuries in his first full season – a season which started while he was still a teenager – and might well have already graduated to the international cricket had his career not been temporarily derailed after he was considered unavailable for selection due to disciplinary issues. He is understood to have been considered for a place in England limited-overs squad for the tour to South Africa but, with the likes of Dawid Malan, the No.1-ranked T20I batsman at present, and Joe Root, England’s Test captain, fighting for their places in one format or another, Clarke has been obliged to bide his time.Clarke is understood to be a temporary replacement for Jason Roy at Perth Scorchers although teams can field three overseas players in their XI for the next two seasons. Roy has England responsibilities during the tournament.

E o treinador evitou lamentar o fato.

West Ham enter the race to sign versatile 22 y/o defender to follow Kilman

Whilst West Ham United managed to secure the signing of Max Kilman last week, it appears that the Hammers are still on the lookout for defenders in order to bolster Julen Lopetegui's side.

Defenders still high on Hammers' list of priorities

Despite agreeing a £40 million to sign Kilman from fellow Premier League side Wolves, it appears that West Ham are still in the market for reinforcements at the back.

West Ham could sign "phenomenal" £30m Paqueta replacement

This talented midfielder won his club’s Player of the Year award for 2023/24.

ByAngus Sinclair Jul 7, 2024

Part of this quest for new defensive players stems from the number of current Hammers set to leave the London Stadium this summer. Ben Johnson has already departed the club after refusing a number of new deals from the East London outfit. It has already been confirmed that the 24-year-old will be playing for Ipswich Town next season.

Another defender that could be on the move is current starting right back Vladimir Coufal. Recent reports in the Turkish press are claiming that Galatasaray are in the hunt to sign the Czech full back whose contract expires next summer. Because of this, the Hammers may be tempted to cash while they can still get a fee for the player.

West Ham defender Vladimir Coufal

With the Hammers potentially entering the new season without a recognised right back on their books, there is no wonder why they have now entered the race for a player to fill the vacancy in this area of the pitch.

West Ham and Everton make moves for Serie A defender

As first reported by Football Inisder's Pete O'Rourke, West Ham have joined Everton in the race to sign Hellas Verona defender Jackson Tchatchoua.

It is reported that the Serie A outfit are looking for a little over £6.5 million to part ways with the defender this summer. Considering that Verona paid £2.5 million last month to make Tchatchoua's loan from Belgian side Royal Charleroi S.C. permanent, it would be a decent bit of business for all sides.

Upon making his deal with Verona permanent, Tchatchoua signed a three-year-deal with the club set to keep him in Italy until the summer of 2027. Despite this, it is likely that Verona would be willing to let the player leave if the £6.5 million price tag can be met.

The 22-year-old made 26 league appearances last season as Verona finished 13th in Serie A. Tchatchoua proved to be a vital asset to his side during the course of the last campaign, playing a number of different positions depending on where he was needed.

The natural full back played as both a right and left-sided midfielder last season, suggesting that he is anything but afraid of flexing his attacking muscles when necessary. With Coufal and Johnson known for their occasional ventures forward, Tchatchoua would be a perfect fit for Lopetegui's new-look West Ham side next season.

Whilst it is unlikely that the 22-year-old would be the Hammers' first choice in this position next season, there is no doubt that Tchatchoua would be a vital asset for West Ham owing to his ability to take up numerous positions all over the pitch.

Aaron Finch assesses Mitchell Starc options after rough treatment

Mitchell Starc has not quite found his radar in the series so far and has fallen away in ODI performance since last year’s World Cup

Though India are the team with a host of bowling problems right now, Australia are not without their own concerns. Chief among these is Mitchell Starc, who has taken 1 for 147 from 18 overs across the opening two ODI games as India’s batsmen found him somewhat easier to line up than his pace counterparts Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins. With Cummins being rested from the remainder of the white-ball games, Starc’s role may need to change according to the tactical requirements of the captain Aaron Finch, but for the most part the captain is understanding of a fast bowler who has been among the world’s pre-eminent white ball merchants for most of the past decade. This is not to say Starc has not fallen away in ODI performance in a similar manner to India’s new ball ace Jasprit Bumrah in the 18 months since last year’s World Cup, because he has. In that period since the Cup, Starc has claimed just 12 wickets at 54.25 in 11 matches, while costing 6.28 runs an over across series against India, South Africa, New Zealand and England.”I think he’s going okay. He hasn’t been at his very best,” Finch said. “You have to understand his standards are a lot higher than what you expect from most other people because of how dominant he’s been over the last 8-9 years, especially in the white-ball formats. He’s been super.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“So he’d love to be swinging the ball and getting it right early on but the reality is when you’re defending big totals and you’re playing against good players, they are coming hard at you. So, there’ll be conversations had today about what we can do slightly different. Whether it’s a tactical thing or when we’re using him through the innings. We’ll chat about that today. Definitely no panic stations here from my point of view.”The flipside, however, is Starc’s evolution as a Test bowler, for he has over a similar timeframe enjoyed the most fruitful passage of his long-form career. In eight Tests since late January 2019, he has scooped no fewer than 45 wickets at 18.42, with a stunning strike rate of 34.8 balls per wicket. Finch acknowledged that it was easier for Cummins and Hazlewood to flip from the IPL to white-ball duty at home, whereas Starc prepared by loading up on overs in the Sheffield Shield for New South Wales ahead of the Test schedule.”At times it can be easier to go from T20 back to 50-over cricket just because you’ve almost got the intent and then you can just rein it in a little bit more. He’s still bowled really well in the Shield in the first couple of rounds,” Finch said.”From my point of view, and chatting to other guys about his technique, and little things that his fellow bowlers and the fast bowling cartel really monitor, they seem to think he’s going really well. So it’s just a matter of time. There’s nowhere to hide in ODI cricket when you’re playing on some really flat wickets with quality opposition.”More broadly, Finch reckoned Australia’s bowling and fielding had improved from game one to game two, noting the outstanding catches from Steven Smith ad Moises Henriques. He was equally happy with Henriques’ canny overs of medium pace through the middle of the Indian innings on Sunday night.”Our fielding definitely wasn’t up to scratch in the first game,” he said. “A few chances went down. In the second game, I thought it was a lot better. I thought our energy and our intent was great. Moises and Smudge took a couple of absolute hangers that turned the game really. Virat [Kohli] goes on and gets 130-140-150 or Shreyas [Iyer] goes on and gets a big score and they’re probably cantering towards 390. So, I think the way that we’ve bowled through the middle overs has been very impressive.”India have come ultra-hard at the start. Obviously, like you’d expect chasing big totals and probably we’ve gone a little bit defensive really early. That happens. The way that [Adam] Zampa has bowled has been outstanding. Moises bowled seven overs the other night. They were brilliant overs to get out of him through that middle period. It was a really simple game plan and we adapted really well to that wicket as well. So, yeah all in all they’ve been pretty good performances.”As for the replacement of David Warner, Finch said he would weigh up the balance between promoting a current member of the side like Marnus Labuschagne and also leaving the middle order untouched, after it functioned so well given a strong platform in each of the opening two games.ALSO READ: Labuschagne puts hand up to open in Warner’s absence”The middle order’s been functioning really well the last little while, I think it played well in England. And it’s done a really good job in this series as well,” Finch said. “There’s a kind of not wanting to do that. Marnus is a class player. If we go that way great. Alex Carey the role of him and Maxy [Glenn Maxwell] at six and seven has been really crucial and provides a bit more freedom for that middle order to go about their business and be ultra-aggressive as well. They’re a few reasons why I wouldn’t like to do it but there’s still a lot of good players there we can choose to do that role.”Left-hand, right-hand combinations are among the issues that Finch is pondering. “It definitely has its advantages at times,” he said. “With Davey and I in particular we’re so different styles of play. Whether LH-RH it doesn’t make too much of a difference. As an example, if you use [Justin] Langer and [Matthew] Hayden as an opening combination.”They played so differently that you had to bowl totally different to each of them anyway, regardless of whether they’re both left-handed, both right or left-right. I think that’s what complements opening partnerships than just that left-right combo.”
