England face nervy final day after Jack Leach battles to five-for

Hectic last hour leaves England needing 36 with seven wickets in hand

Jack Leach celebrates after taking his fifth wicket•SLC

It may look like a modest target, but England face a nervous final morning in their bid to wrap up victory in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. When Sri Lanka’s second innings ended, midway through the final session on day four, it seemed the result was little more than a formality. England had been set just 74 to win, after all.But within minutes, England were 14 for 3. The left-arm spin of Lasith Embuldeniya, in particular, appeared to send panic coursing through the England line-up with Joe Root, their captain, run out by yards as he attempted to complete a highly optimistic single.By then, England had already lost both openers. Dom Sibley, desperate not to be drawn into playing at one that left him, instead left a straight ball that hit his off stump. Zak Crawley, meanwhile, was unable to capitalise upon being dropped on one, pushing at one that did indeed turn away from him and presenting a sharp catch to gully. But it was only when Root fell that Sri Lanka would have sensed they could pull off one of the great comebacks. Jonny Bairstow had barely dropped the ball more than a couple of metres in front of him, but seemed to call Root through for a single that was as unnecessary as it was unlikely. He had collided with the bowler, Dilruwan Perera, but was left well short of his ground regardless, as the keeper, Niroshan Dickwella, broke the stumps with his direct hit.Had Bairstow, looking more than a little rattled, been run out to the next delivery – he attempted another impossibly quick single and would have out by yards if there had been a direct hit – Sri Lanka might even have been favourites. But he survived. And in partnership with an impressively calm Dan Lawrence, Bairstow added 24 more runs before bad light forced a slightly early close. You suspect, ultimately, that the damage incurred in Sri Lanka’s first innings will simply prove too deep to mend. That said, England still require another 36 to win on the final day, and as the first six overs of their innings showed, it would be wrong to take anything for granted.Lasith Embuldeniya took two early wickets in the fourth innings•SLC

If England do go on to win, it will prove an especially memorably performance for Jack Leach. Leach, who came into this game having played just two first-class games in the last 14 months, has endured a tough time since he last represented England in Mount Maunganui in November 2019. He fell ill on that tour of New Zealand and was subsequently hospitalised with a case of sepsis that he admitted had him fearing for his life. While he was recalled to the England squad for the tour of South Africa, he fell ill once again and was eventually sent home early to ensure a complete recovery. With the outbreak of Covid-19 adding to the concerns of a man with a reduced immune system (a courtesy of his long-term battle with Crohn’s disease), Leach has admitted there were moments when he wondered if he would ever return the Test team.So to complete a five-wicket haul – his second at this level and his first since England last toured Sri Lanka in 2018 – represents a remarkable comeback. And a further demonstration of the strength of character that lurks under that mild-looking exterior. In truth, neither Leach nor Dom Bess was at their best for much of this game. Lacking the preparation they would have liked, there were times when they were unable to harness the undoubted assistance provided by this surface. Both would confess they bowled more release deliveries than they would have liked.Increasingly, however, they started to find their rhythm on the fourth day. There were moments in Sri Lanka’s second innings when Leach, in particular, looked a dangerous proposition with his drift and turn troubling the right-handers.Lahiru Thirimanne reached three figures•SLC

The wicket of Perera might have been particularly pleasing for England. It saw Jos Buttler complete the first stumping of his Test career to underline a really accomplished performance with the gloves. Buttler, in his 28th Test as keeper, had earlier missed a desperately tough stumping opportunity, but has generally kept impressively in this game. Completing such a dismissal from his old friend, Leach – the pair developed together at Somerset – was due reward for his improvement. And it will please the selectors, who have preferred him to Ben Foakes, who was player of the series when England won here in 2018.There were also moments it appeared Sri Lanka could set England a testing fourth-innings target. Certainly when Lahiru Thirimanne was at the crease, Sri Lanka will have retained thoughts of repeating their remarkable performance here in 2015, when they overcame a huge first-innings deficit to bowl India to defeat in the fourth innings.Thirimanne’s only other century at this level came on this ground in March 2013. But, since that match against Bangladesh, he had averaged 19.16 in 27 Tests coming into this game. Having failed in the first innings, it is no exaggeration to suggest that, by the time he walked out to bat on the third day, his career – and Sri Lanka’s hopes of salvaging anything from this game – were hanging by a thread.Related

SL hope Thirimanne can live up to early expectations

But he revived his side’s hopes with an impressively assured contribution in the innings. Showing both patience and composure, he demonstrated a decent defensive technique and put away the loose ball effectively in reaching his first century in 54 Test innings. Each time it seemed Sri Lanka were on the brink of establishing a strong position, however, England would claim the wicket that pulled them back into the mire.In the end, it was the new ball that did for Thirimanne. After Sam Curran had moved a couple away from him, he got one to hold its own and take the inside edge of Thirimanne’s bat. Shortly afterwards, Dinesh Chandimal was drawn into poking at one from Bess that went straight on.Still, by the time they reached parity, Sri Lanka still had five wickets in hand. In partnership with Dickwella, Mathews had negotiated a disciplined spell from England’s seamers to add 48 overs in 23.4 overs. That frustration may well have led to Dickwella’s downfall. Attempting to run a short ball to third man, he succeeded only in top-edging the ball into the gloves of Buttler. In the next over, Dasun Shanaka was beaten in the flight by Leach and effectively yorked before Wanindu Hasaranga was drawn into a drive and Root held onto a sharp chance at slip. While Mathews reached a determined half-century, he was unable to replicate his heroics of Leeds in 2014 and became the final man to fall after edging one that left him from the deserving Leach. It was a performance that gave Sri Lanka just a scintilla of a chance. You cannot help but wonder, however, what might have happened had they managed even 50 or 100 more in their first innings.

NOVAS CHANCES…

He wants to join: Southampton looking at “extraordinary” Adams upgrade

Southampton look to be very much on the hunt for more attacking options this transfer window, after it was finally confirmed that Che Adams had found a new club away from the South Coast outfit.

Losing the Scotland international's firepower up top ahead of their maiden voyage up to the Premier League will sting, especially when you consider he's moved onto Serie A side Torino on a free transfer too, but Russell Martin's men will now be determined to adequately replace the ex-Birmingham City forward's goal threat now.

hugo-ekitike-che-adams-transfer-news-premier-league

They would well replace him with one prolific goal machine who will be well known to fans of English football and is need of finding his mojo again with a new permanent club, after shining briefly in the Premier League last campaign.

Southampton leading race for ex-Blackburn Rovers ace

According to a report by TEAMtalk, Southampton are leading the race to sign former Blackburn Rovers ace Ben Brereton Diaz this summer transfer window.

Brereton Diaz shone out on loan with Sheffield United last season, with six goals managed from 14 top-flight games for the basement club, and so could want to end his Villarreal nightmare once and for all this off-season.

Ben Brereton Diaz in action for Villarreal.

Really struggling to make an impact for the La Liga giants after walking out of Blackburn last year, the current Villarreal number nine is said to be keen on a move to the newly promoted Saints, who have long admired Brereton Diaz's prowess in front of goal.

Now feels like the perfect opportunity for this move to get over the line, therefore, with the 25-year-old a deadly finisher when on his A-Game, and a striker that could make Martin and Co instantly forget about Adams departing for Italy.

What Brereton-Diaz can offer Southampton

Away from offering the Blades some much-needed positivity in attack last season at the foot of the Premier League, Brereton-Diaz already had a reputation for being a deadly finisher on English soil, mainly when he was on the books at Blackburn.

The adopted Chile international would bag 47 goals from 177 games at Ewood Park, leading to his ex-Blackburn boss in Tony Mowbray labelling him as an "extraordinary" talent, with 16 goals managed in all competitions from 50 games during his final swansong season in Lancashire.

As shown in the table above, in the pair's most recent, respective outings in the top flight, it is Brereton Diaz who enjoyed the more fruitful time of it in front of goal, thus indicating just what a potential upgrade he could be amid Southampton's return to the promisied land.

Brereton Diaz's game could also be elevated next to Adam Armstrong – who he lined up with at the Riversiders once upon a time too – with the experienced sharp-shooter scoring a sublime 21 second tier strikes during the regular campaign for Martin's Saints on the way to promotion being dramatically sealed.

Likewise, Armstrong could learn from his new partner up top, with the 27-year-old a feared prospect for defenders in the EFL, but not really for Premier League defences, having bagged only four top-flight strikes across his career to date.

Brereton Diaz eclipsed that total just last season at Bramall Lane, with Adams also previously being a goal-shy presence in the elite division, with only 25 strikes managed from 125 games.

Therefore, if given time over a full season in the bright lights of the top league, the Chilean striker could become a new hero for the Saints, and fill the gap left behind by the Scotsman perfectly.

Celtic braced for fourth new O’Riley bid after Atalanta offer knocked back

Celtic are braced for a fourth Matt O'Riley bid as yet another club enter the mix for his signature this summer, it has been reported.

O'Riley in hot demand

There has rarely been a player more in demand at Celtic than midfielder Matt O'Riley after a fantastic Scottish Premiership campaign. The Danish midfielder, who opened the scoring in their 4-1 pre-season thrashing of Chelsea last week, has been a key part of Celtic's midfield since joining in 2022, and has attracted the interest of some of Europe's biggest clubs.

Atletico Madrid had a bid rejected for the 23-year-old in January, while reports linked Serie A champions Inter with a move for the midfielder ahead of the summer window.

Celtic now open to offers for trio who take home a combined £30,000-a-week

They are yet to complete a move, but current European Champions Atalanta are pushing hard to land the talented midfielder for Gian Piero Gasperini's side. So far, they have seen three bids turned down by the Glasgow outfit for O'Riley, with the most recent offer totaling €17m (£14m) knocked back by Celtic last week.

Brendan Rodgers refused to be drawn on the latest on his star man when quizzed during pre-season, but admitted he could well depart.

"There's no update, fairly relaxed," Rodgers told a news conference. "He knows the privilege it is to play for Celtic. Celtic is a club where you can move on but you don't have to and it's a very difficult club to move on from.

"Naturally, with the wages that are on offer for players, that makes it a real challenge for Celtic to compete at that level. He knows what he has here. We're all quite relaxed with it. Every player has a value, we know that."

Southampton readying bid for midfielder

Football Insider now report that Southampton are readying an opening bid for the Celtic midfielder. The south coast side, who can offer Premier League football after their promotion via the play-offs, have an advantage on the competition too.

That is because coach Russell Martin has already worked with O'Riley before, and is reported to have a "close relationship" with the midfielder, who he is "very keen to work with" again.

It is added that O'Riley has been "earmarked as a statement signing" after an otherwise largely low-key summer for the Saints, and that "an official bid" is now being readied for his services.

It remains to be seen whether the close bond between Martin and O'Riley is enough to convince the Danish midfielder to pick what is likely to be a relegation battle in the Premier League over a Champions League campaign under Gasperini, but it would certainly be a masisve coup were the Saints able to pick him up ahead of the competition.

For Celtic, added interest may drive the price up further, and should the club be resigned to his exit this summer then a bidding war would be in their best interests.

Ian Harvey named Gloucestershire interim head coach after Richard Dawson departure

Dawson leaves after six years at Bristol during which club won Royal London Cup and Championship promotion

Ian Harvey will become Gloucestershire’s interim head coach at the end of the month, when Richard Dawson leaves the club following his appointment as the ECB’s elite performance pathway coach.Harvey, the former Australia allrounder, played 168 times for Gloucestershire across formats between 1999 and 2006, and has been the club’s assistant coach since Dawson’s appointment as head coach ahead of the 2015 season.Dawson has worked regularly with England squads over the past two years, leading the England Lions’ tour to Australia in early 2020 and working with England’s spinners on a camp in Mumbai in late 2019 and during the Test series against West Indies last summer.During his tenure at Gloucestershire, Dawson oversaw the club’s triumph in the 2015 Royal London Cup, when they beat Surrey at Lord’s, and their promotion to Division One of the County Championship in 2019. While they have never gone past the semi-final stage, they have also been among the most consistent counties in the T20 Blast: only Nottinghamshire have won more games than them over the last six seasons.”It has been a huge privilege to have been the head coach of Gloucestershire since 2015,” Dawson said. “There were highs and lows on the pitch but winning the Royal London One-Day Cup in 2015 and gaining promotion to Division One of the County Championship in 2019 were highlights on the pitch, as was seeing a Gloucestershire player [James Bracey] breaking into the England set-up last year.”As a playing and coaching unit, we have faced a lot of challenges off the field, and I’m proud of the togetherness of this squad, who have been incredibly supportive of one another through good and bad times. I’m confident the group is in a strong place with a healthy mix of experience and youth to compete in all formats of the game.”Will Brown, the club’s chief executive, said: “Richard has been a fantastic coach to work with from the outset engendering a belief and excitement that has filtered into all areas of the club. His dedication to building a positive and winning culture has been evident throughout his time in Bristol and the impact he made will be felt long after he is gone.”Richard has taken huge pride in his role as head coach, working tirelessly to get the best out of himself and the players. His likeable easy-going personality, coupled with his commitment to Gloucestershire, garnered respect from the playing squad and meant he had a great rapport with the wider club staff.”Dawson will continue to oversee pre-season preparations until the end of the month, when Harvey will take over with the support of the club’s existing coaching staff, as well as Matt Windows (chairman of cricket) and David Graveney (an executive board member).A Gloucestershire statement said: “The club will now begin a review of its cricketing requirements in order to continue and grow ahead of a formal recruitment process later in the year.”The raft of coaching appointments announced by the ECB on Monday also had ramifications further down the M5, with Marcus Trescothick’s association with Somerset coming to an end after nearly three decades.Trescothick, who made his Somerset debut in 1993, retired at the end of the 2019 season to become Somerset’s assistant coach, and has now been appointed as the ECB’s elite batting coach. In a Somerset press release, he set his sights on returning as head coach in the future.”Although I’m leaving, I’m still going to be around the place to come in and see some of the batters that Somerset have,” Trescothick said. “Not being around the ground as much as I normally am is certainly going to be a bit different.”I want to further my career so that I can eventually become a head coach at a domestic county with the hope of moving into international cricket somewhere down the line. To do that I need to branch out and look at different environments in order to get a better understanding of certain things, and this will certainly give me the opportunity to do that. Hopefully, this might be the stepping stone for me to one day come back and look after the team here.”

In the two previous campaigns, the Gunners have come within touching distance of ending their extended wait for a top-division title, but they could be helped by the signing of one talent this summer.

Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino appears to be edging ever closer to a move to North London, with journalist Fabrizio Romano confirming that the 28-year-old has already agreed personal terms, with the two sides working on a fee for the former Newcastle United man.

The Sociedad talent could potentially complete Arteta’s midfield trio alongside Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice – a hugely talented heart of the side that could prove to be the difference during the upcoming campaign.

However, the Arsenal boss is still eyeing reinforcements in attacking areas, including one high-profile star who could transform the Gunners’ already potent forward line.

Arsenal should sign £25m talent this summer

Kai Havertz produced an admirable first season at the Emirates in a slightly unnatural centre-forward role, scoring 13 times in his 37 appearances – ending the campaign as the club’s second top scorer behind Bukayo Saka.

However, an out-and-out striker is on the agenda for Arteta this summer, with Lille talisman Jonathan David just one player to be linked with a move to North London during the off-season.

LOSC Lille striker Jonathan David

The Canadian, who only has one year left on his current deal in France, scored 19 times in 34 appearances in Ligue 1 last season – with the £25m fee touted a bargain for a player of his quality.

Arteta’s side aren’t the only ones interested in his signature this window, with Chelsea and Spurs also admirers of the 24-year-old.

Whilst he may not strike supporters as an upgrade on their current options, he would be an excellent addition and one that can allow the club to forget about a move for another striker on their shortlist.

Why David could be Arsenal’s answer to Isak

Newcastle United talisman Alexander Isak is a player who has constantly been linked with a move to the Emirates this summer, unsurprisingly after his excellent recent goalscoring exploits.

The Swedish international registered scored 21 times in his 30 Premier League appearances during 2023/24, as the Magpies narrowly missed out on a second season of European football.

As a result, the Gunners attempted to test the waters with a move, but Eddie Howe’s side slapped a £100m+ price tag on his head in order to part ways with their star man.

David could prove to be a much cheaper alternative, costing Arsenal four times less, but when comparing him to Isak – who is noted as a similar player, according to FBref – the Lille man bettered the Swede in numerous key areas.

The “mind-blowing” David, as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, registered the same amount of combined goals and assists as Isak last season, whilst having a better shot-on-target accuracy rate.

He also achieved a better pass completion rate – fitting into Arteta’s philosophy of possession-based play perfectly, allowing for link up with the likes of Saka and Gabriel Martinelli.

Lille's Jonathan David

Given the huge difference in fee and similarity in figures produced in their respective leagues last season, David would be an excellent addition for Arsenal – handing them the added cutting edge they’ve been searching for this summer.

He has the ability to become the club’s main talisman, thriving off the service provided from the players around, whilst also potentially handing Arteta’s side the edge in another title battle with Man City.

The “world-class” talent would be an exceptional signing.
