Leeds have been handed a major boost in their chase to sign AZ Alkmaar captain Teun Koopmeiners this summer.

What’s the story?

In a list of options suggested by The Athletic’s Phil Hay as potential cover for Kalvin Phillips, the Dutchman’s name came into the discussion, with the news that he could be set for an exit from Alkmaar when the transfer window opens.

Spanish publication AS have claimed that, as well as fellow Premier League side Liverpool being interested in Koopmeiners, AZ could be willing to let him go for a fee of around £14.5m.

Better bargain than Meslier

Given just how cheaply Leeds bought Illan Meslier on a permanent deal last summer (£5.85m, according to Transfermarkt), that deal is surely up there with being one of Victor Orta’s biggest masterclasses at Elland Road.

In the 1.83m-tall (6 foot) Koopmeiners, the Whites could arguably secure an even better bargain. The valuation on the Dutchman is a major boost for Leeds given what Hay had previously suggested about the midfielder:

“The indications from Holland are that the 23-year-old, who won his first Holland cap in October, is ready for a move and his agent, Bart Baving, told Italian media last month that ‘the time has come for the next move’. However, he will not be cheap and several Italian clubs are monitoring him.”

Described as a “leader” by his former coach Koen Stam, Koopmeiners is AZ’s captain; and as well as being a talented footballer, would be another important voice in the Leeds dressing room if he comes to Yorkshire.

In some player analysis done by The Athletic, it was suggested: “Koopmeiners has more of an attacking profile than Phillips (something that might fit with Bielsa’s standards of versatility) and there is a lot to like about him. He stands out as a very good all-rounder in top-flight terms: an extremely strong tackler who mirrors Phillips in his constant attempts to look for forward passes rather than lateral balls.

“While the match with Phillips is not perfect, it is close enough to suggest that Koopmeiners is an asset Bielsa could refine with coaching.”

Given the position he plays, and that he appears to be coming in at a much cheaper price than perhaps initially would have been expected, this has all the potential of being another Orta masterclass if Leeds can pull it off.

Celtic’s resounding 6-0 win this weekend will have breathed fresh life into the Bhoys and its entire staff.

It’s not often the Hoops have managed to record convincing victories this term but it was a wonderful statement from their interim boss.

What’s the word?

John Kennedy is currently in temporary charge of the Hoops and the win he engineered over Livingston on Saturday was a big message to the hierarchy.

He is by no means the favourite to become their new manager with the coach facing competition from Eddie Howe.

That being said, there have been a number of twists and turns. Frank McAvennie doesn’t think he’ll land the job because of complications regarding Fergal Harkin and Richard Hughes.

Howe wants Hughes instead of the former as his director of football which has led to Celtic considering Lucien Favre as their manager instead.

In a fresh batch of news, McAvennie told Football Insider the latest:

“There are names pinging about all over the place up here, they don’t know who’s coming or going.

“But if Howe says no, they haven’t put all their eggs in one basket and I’m told by my sources if they have to start again, they can.”

Positive news

The Celtic hierarchy have had a habit of getting things wrong this season.

Take last summer’s recruitment for instance. They spent £4.5m on error-prone Vasilis Barkas while they also splashed out £5m on Albian Ajeti, a forward who has scored just six times since arriving from West Ham.

Their failure to sack Neil Lennon led to protests from the Green Brigade outside of Parkhead and Dermot Desmond has been questioned in recent weeks over his role too.

He was asked whether he would sell his shares before issuing a defiant statement; he was going nowhere.

The Hoops haven’t particularly covered themselves in glory over their manager hunt either. Roy Keane was the favourite before rumours of his entrance evaporated in swift fashion.

They are now failing to get Howe through the door, either. Thus, news that they’re happy to start again and look elsewhere should come as encouraging news.

Desmond clearly has other irons in the fire and they evidently have contingency plans. The very fact that Favre is in the picture as well tells the story.

With Howe previously in advanced discussions, it looked as though they had placed all their eggs in the 43-year-old’s basket. That, however, certainly isn’t the case.

Celtic supporters should be pleased by the meticulous nature of the board. After all, a failure to appoint the right man could lead to another disastrous season chasing Rangers’ tail.

Rangers have been linked with a move for Dijon centre-back Senou Coulibaly recently and if he were to join Steven Gerrard’s side at Ibrox this summer, he could be the ideal man to replace Filip Helander.

According to French news outlet Foot Mercato, via Get Football News France, both Rangers and Huddersfield Town are keen on signing the 26-year-old defender this summer.

The Frenchman has made 17 appearances in Ligue 1 so far this season, contributing two goals and averaging a disappointing 6.52 rating.

However, he is featuring in a side currently rock bottom of the French top-flight and looking nailed on for relegation, so you would expect that his performances would improve in a side such as Rangers, who will be challenging for the title next season.

The 6 foot 3 centre-back would face plenty of competition if he were to make the move to Ibrox, considering Gerrard has the likes of Connor Goldson, Leon Balogun, Nikola Katic, George Edmundson and Jack Simpson already at his disposal.

However, he could prove to be a direct replacement for Helander, with the Swedish international having been linked with a move to both Leicester City and Aston Villa in recent weeks.

The former Bologna man has played a key part in Rangers’ title success this season but he may have his head turned by Premier League interest, which would, in turn, leave a gap in Gerrard’s squad.

Coulibaly is younger and significantly quicker than Helander, so could prove to be a solid replacement for the 27-year-old, whilst given that he is currently valued at £720k by Transfermarkt, he could probably be brought in at a fraction of the price Helander would be sold for.

Although he is contracted with Dijon until 2023, they may be forced to cash in on him this summer following relegation, and a move to Rangers would surely be appealing for the 26-year-old, especially as they can likely offer Champions League football next season.

Therefore, Ross Wilson should definitely consider a move for Coulibaly this summer as he could prove to be the dream replacement for Helander should he depart.

Fans of Glasgow Rangers have been reacting to a post on Twitter, that relayed a claim made by Rangers’ assistant manager, Gary McAllister, regarding James Tavernier and Nathan Patterson.

According to McAllister, as cited by Clyde 1, Steven Gerrard could look to implement a shift in formation in order to accommodate the two “outstanding” right-backs, Tavernier and Patterson, into his starting XI.

The assistant manager said: “As a club, we are uber-delighted to have two outstanding players in that area. There are different formations that, you never know, we might be able to get the two of them on the pitch at the same time.”

So far this season, Patterson has made just five appearances in the Scottish Premiership, while the club captain, Tavernier, has featured in 29 league fixtures.

However, after news of the potential switch in formation was shared on Twitter by Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, fans of Rangers flocked to have their say on the matter, with many appearing to be delighted at the prospect of both Tavernier and Patterson being on the pitch at the same time, something that could be seen in Gers’ clash with St Johnstone on Wednesday evening.
