24-Apr-2001The Pakistan cricket team for next month’s tour to England will benamed on Tuesday evening, officials said, adding that the announcementof the coach will be announced later. The chairman of selectors Wasim Bari said Monday that he was informedby the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) that all the players were declaredfit by the panel of doctors and were now available for selection.Bari, however, said the team would be finalized and handed over to thePCB on Tuesday. He said he would be submitting a 16-man squad for thetwo-Test series while team for the tri-nation oneday series would benamed later.Bari indicated there was a possibility that an additional player mightbe sent to England. As things continued to remain complex and intriguing, former captainsWasim Akram and Moin Khan were left facing the axe in the backdrop ofrecent happenings.Wasim Akram, after a dismal performance in the two Tests againstEngland at home, failed to take part in the three-Test series againstNew Zealand because of inter-coastal injury. Nevertheless, sources sayskipper Waqar Younis was strongly opposing the selection of Wasimthough the vote of the chief selector was in the left-armer’s favour.Rashid Latif is being favoured over Moin because of Waqar’s firmbelief in the talent of the former who first blew the whistle ofbetting and match-fixing in Pakistan cricket. Not surprisingly injury prone and joy-rider, Shoaib Akhtar has onceagain been assured of a place in the squad after returning unfit fromthe tour to New Zealand in February. Brig Rana admitted that Shoaibneither appeared before the panel of doctors nor played in the ongoing one-dayers on the pretext that he was suffering from stomachupset.Likely 16:Waqar Younis (captain), Inzamam-ul-Haq (vice-captain), Saeed Anwar,Yousuf Youhana, Abdur Razzaq, Azhar Mahmood, Mohammad Sami, FaisalIqbal, Younis Khan, Mohammad Wasim, Imran Farhat, Rashid Latif(wicketkeeper), Shoaib Akhtar, Fazle Akbar and Mushtaq Ahmad, SaqlainMushtaq.

Villa can get Douglas Luiz upgrade in Ward-Prowse

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith could sign a major Douglas Luiz upgrade in Southampton and England star James Ward-Prowse this summer.

What’s the story?

According to recent reports from The Guardian, the Villa manager is keen on landing Ward-Prowse in the transfer window, and given his performances for the Saints, he would be a real better option for the Midlands side than Luiz.

Better than Douglas Luiz

Hailed as a “machine”, Ward-Prowse enjoyed a superb campaign with the Saints last season, scoring eight goals and providing a further seven assists in the top-flight.

And, speaking exclusively to FFC, former England defender Carlton Palmer said that signing for Villa would be a good move for the midfielder, claiming:

“Villa are going for it. They’ve just managed to sign Buendia. Villa are a big, big club, and have a top manager in Dean Smith. So, from Southampton to Aston Villa, I think that’s a good move. And with Grealish there, I don’t expect Grealish to be going anywhere.

“He’s getting a very good squad of players there, and they could be challenging top six or top seven next season, so that would be a good move for him.”

Rated at £60m by CIES, Ward-Prowse comfortably betters Luiz in a lot of the key midfield metrics, not least when it comes to goals and assists – the Brazilian managed no goals and just two assists in the top-flight.

As per Whoscored, the Saints man also appears to be better defensively than Luiz, averaging far more tackles and more clearances while also making fewer fouls and being dribbled past fewer times per game too.

Those stats point to Ward-Prowse being the kind of tigerish midfielder who can help out when pressing and who can put his foot in, but one who is not reckless by committing needless fouls or simply being ran past too easily.

And then, when you add in his attacking contributions, the England international shines considerably more than Villa’s current midfielder.

Johan Lange could sign a real upgrade on Luiz in Southampton’s Ward-Prowse this summer, if he can get a deal done.

Meanwhile, Duncan Castles has dropped an exciting Aston Villa transfer claim…

Ganguly: It was just a question of sticking there

Sourav Ganguly has waited long for his eighth Test century

Special Correspondent03-Mar-2002Sourav Ganguly has waited long for his eighth Test century. When he finally raised it after 28 months, he was obviously mightily relieved and delighted. His unbeaten 135 off 279 balls, an innings that included 21 fours and six, on the rain-interrupted third day has not just put India on course for the first-innings lead, it has also probably ensured that Kolkata’s favourite son would remain the captain for India’s away series against the West Indies. Excerpts from his press-conference on Sunday:Are you relieved at finally getting a century?Of course, yes, obviously relieved. But I knew I had to concentrate and the runs would come. It was just a question of sticking there.Did you change your batting style? There was a little change in the style. But it had a lot to do with my concentration. I had been getting out in 30s and 40s, though I had been batting well. In fact, I got out four times between 35 and 47, so it was all about being able to concentrate more and luckily I did that today. I had worked on my pull and cut strokes. I knew the wicket didn’t have too much pace and the ball was coming at a convenient level. I am happy these two shots gave me some runs. But so many rain interruptions must have made it difficult for you?It isn’t very easy under those conditions, when you are going in and coming out so much. But you can’t really help such things. You have got to cope up with these difficulties and try your best.Is this your best knock?I won’t say so. I have played better knocks but this one was also important, both for me and the team. Besides getting back some form I also contributed to the team.Batting at number three seems to get the best out of you. You seem to enjoy batting in that position…It could be co-incidental but yes, having opened in one-dayers for India makes me more comfortable when the ball is hard and new. I am used to facing the new ball though it has got its advantages and disadvantages. The bowlers look fresh and keep attacking the batsman constantly. But one thing, it also gives you more opportunities to score boundaries. You have to wait for the loose ball and play accordingly. So you would continue to bat at this position? No, it’s not a permanent slot for me. Rahul (Dravid) has done very well at that place and he is the rightful claimant to that slot. It was a good gesture by him to allow me to come at number three when I asked for it but he will be back in that place from the next series. And how would you plan tomorrow’s play?We have to take lead first and then we can put pressure on them. About a 100-run lead would be good on this wicket.

8,0 -Gilberto

Leicester City linked to Joe Willock

Leicester City could be offered Joe Willock in a player-plus-cash deal by Arsenal as they attempt to prize James Maddison away from the King Power Stadium.

What’s the story?

That’s according to The Express, who claim Gunners chief Edu is hoping to slash the Foxes’ £60 million asking price in half by including Willock as part of a deal for the England international.

Maddison has been one of Leicester’s standout performers since arriving back in 2018 and was unfortunate not to be included in Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2020 squad.

Rudkin risks ruining Rodgers’ project

The former Norwich City ace has been central to the success of the Midlands outfit in recent years, bagging 27 goals and providing 20 assists in 118 appearances, winning the FA Cup along the way.

While Maddison’s magnificent performances have understandably attracted attention from one of the Premier League traditional ‘Big Six’ clubs, director of football Jon Rudkin must refuse the proposed bid if Edu does make the offer.

Leicester have founded their recent success off the back of incredibly smart work in the transfer market.

Young stars such as N’Golo Kante, Riyad Mahrez and Harry Maguire have been picked up for minimal fees before being sold on for astronomical profits a few years later.

The proceeds have then been wisely reinvested into the first-team squad, allowing Brendan Rodgers’ charges to punch well above their weight.

However, after two consecutive fifth-place finishes, it’s time for that tactic to come to an end. If Leicester want to become a Champions League club, then they must act like one.

Realistically though, if the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United, or Chelsea come in for one of their prized assets then there’s not much the club’s hierarchy can do to stop them from leaving.

But the Gunners have finished below the King Power Stadium side for the last two years and face a first season without European football for 25 years next term.

Allowing Mikel Arteta’s men to poach one of their most important men when Arsenal are at their lowest point in recent history would have the potential to ruin the project Rodgers has worked so hard on over the last two-and-a-half years.

Willock may be a very talented player, but he’s not at Maddison’s level, and the domino effect could be even more costly for Rudkin and co.

And, in other news…Leicester must land “ferocious” £6.3m-rated gem with more key passes than Maddison

Walker looking to improve his performance by being himself

Recalled New Zealand leg-spinner Brooke Walker was put through the grinder at Sharjah last year and will be heading back into the cauldron after his selection in teams for Sharjah and both one-dayers and Tests in Pakistan today

Lynn McConnell01-Apr-2002Recalled New Zealand leg-spinner Brooke Walker was put through the grinder at Sharjah last year and will be heading back into the cauldron after his selection in teams for Sharjah and both one-dayers and Tests in Pakistan today.Walker, 25, has taken the place of Daniel Vettori, who has been ruled out of the tour on medical advice as part of a managed programme to assist his rehabilitation from a stress fracture to his back.Walker said today that his immediate goal was to improve on his last tour to Sharjah where he felt he was guilty of trying to mix his pace up in a bid to match the way Muttiah Muralitharan was able to turn the ball square on the flat pitches.”I will try to bowl the way I normally do,” he said.”I have to bowl more consistently, line and length, and more at the pace I regularly bowl at,” he said.Walker said he felt he had sorted out his bowling around the time the State Shield series finished in early February and that he had gone back a little since then. However, he will spend some time with his old club coach Rowan Armour who has helped him a lot in his career so far, before the team leaves for Sharjah on Saturday. It will be a tight time frame but Walker is confident that the adjustment he needs to make is a small one.International selection wasn’t on Walker’s mind in what had been a busy personal season, and something of a triumph. In his first year as Auckland captain, he led the side to victory in the first State Championship and took 28 wickets at an average of 24.75. His career figures now show him having 120 wickets at 30.70 in his 55 first-class matches. On the one-day scene the figures are not so impressive with only three wickets at 83 in his seven matches to date and at an economy rate of 5.79. His best One-Day International bowling was two for 43 off nine overs against South Africa at Cape Town.”It has been a rewarding experience as captain. It was quite hard and I was learning all the way through the series.”But as a captain I wanted to be positive and I had 11 other guys looking to me for leadership.”He said his team-mates had been supportive and with some talented young players coming into the side he had been conscious of helping them develop belief and confidence and to relax in the first-class environment. It was a struggle to bowl himself at times, but he said Matt Horne, who returned to the side from Otago this year and who had captaincy experience of his own, had been invaluable in letting him know that it was time he came on to bowl.Walker went into the season looking to work on some aspects of his bowling and he felt it had worked out well but he said he had “gone off the boil” after the one-day programme which had been disappointing.Selection has also meant he has had to put his career away from the cricket field on hold. He was looking to get involved in real estate marketing and was due to have some interviews but they would now have to wait until at least the end of the tour to Sharjah and the Test tour of Pakistan, and all going well, possibly the tour to the West Indies.Walker said it had been good to go away after his first taste of international play last summer and to learn about his art a little more and he thought that overall his leg-spin had advanced nicely.

Pundit cannot see David Moyes leaving West Ham anytime soon

West Ham manager David Moyes will not be thinking of moving on, says former Premier League midfielder Carlton Palmer.

The West Ham board recently decided to offer Moyes a new three-year contract, which he has signed, to keep him at the club after his previous deal reached its final month.

Prior, the 58-year-old had been linked with a return to Everton, while various other Premier League jobs have also been available this summer.

Moyes, however, has opted to stay at West Ham and Palmer expects the Scotsman to honour his contract if interest arises in the near future.

“He signed a new three-year contract, he’s had a fantastic season, he seems to be a good fit with [David] Gold and [David] Sullivan, so why would he want to leave?” the ex-Leeds United player said in an interview with TT.

“You don’t sign a three-year contract and be thinking of moving on. If he was thinking of moving on, then I think after the season he’s had, I’m sure he would have had clubs, especially before he signed his contract.”

Would Moyes fancy another crack at one of the top jobs in the country after his disappointing spell at Manchester United? Perhaps, but he looks at home at the London Stadium, enjoying a second tenure with the Hammers.

Considering that, it is hard to imagine Moyes walking away from the club anytime soon.
