Southampton in talks over Mario Lemina sale

Southampton are in talks regarding a deal which would see Mario Lemina leave St Mary’s this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by French media outlet Le10 Sport (via Sport Witness), who claimed that, following a €4m (£3.5m) offer from Nice being rejected by Southampton, talks are ongoing between the two clubs regarding the midfielder’s potential sale in the summer transfer window.

The report added that, while there is still ground to be made up between the two clubs’ respective valuations of the 27-year-old, talks this weekend could see a breakthrough which may all but secure his switch to the south of France ahead of next season.

Fans surely buzzing

Having cost Southampton €20m (£18.1m) to sign from Serie A outfit Juventus four years ago, it is an easy argument to make that Lemina has not proven fantastic value for money for the south coast club.

Indeed, having featured just 52 times for Saints during his time at the club, as well as being sent out on loan for the last two seasons, it is evident that the £64,000-per-week midfielder is not a key part of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s plans at Saint Mary’s.

The Gabon international has not exactly flopped when given the opportunity in a Southampton shirt, earning an impressive seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.98 and 6.89 in his first two seasons at the club respectively. However, if the 53-year-old Saints manager has no intention of playing the £9m-rated midfielder, it would indeed seem wise to move him on while he is still under contract with the club.

Furthermore, should Nice pay a fee for the man Garth Crooks dubbed a “powerhouse”, this money – plus whatever is saved on Lemina’s considerable wages – could easily be put towards improving Southampton’s squad ahead of next season. That possibility would surely have fans of the club buzzing.

Newcastle can get a new Nolan in Conor Gallagher

Newcastle United could sign their new Kevin Nolan in Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher amid an exciting transfer update.

What’s the story?

According to recent reports from journalist Alan Nixon, the Magpies have got their eye on the 21-year-old starlet, with the midfielder having spent the previous campaign on loan at fellow Premier League side West Brom.

Now, The Northern Echo’s Scott Wilson has said that Steve Bruce’s side have discussed a possible loan move for Gallagher this summer, and that the Newcastle boss is understood to be hopeful over pushing through an agreement.

Newcastle’s new Nolan

In his time with the Magpies, Nolan was best remembered for helping to fire the club back into the Premier League, and also for that superb hat-trick against arch-rivals Sunderland when they thumped them 5-1 in October 2010.

In total, he managed a very impressive 30 goals in 91 games for the Tyneside club, including 17 in the 2009/2010 season when they earned promotion back to the top-flight with the English ace reveling in a freer role.

Nolan’s ability to break into the box and all-around dynamism are exactly what they would be getting from Gallagher.

During his time at Swansea, Sky Sports pundit Keith Andrews lauded the “unbelievable” energy Gallagher possesses, even comparing him to Chelsea and England legend Frank Lampard, arguably the best the Premier League has seen in terms of runs into the box.

He said: “But the one thing he has got is a fantastic engine, much like Lee Bowyer or Frank Lampard – it’s amazing, the resemblances between those two in their younger years particularly. But for me, he’s a classic No 8; he has an unbelievable energy, he does the ugly side of the game, but you have to let him off the leash and let him get forward.”

Despite not getting too many opportunities at Stamford Bridge, Gallagher has been widely praised during his loan spells, with former Charlton boss Lee Bowyer even calling the £13.5m-rated midfielder a “jewel” that was “impossible to replace.”

If the Magpies can tie up a deal for the 21-year-old, then Newcastle could well be looking at the player to take over from Nolan’s mantle.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are tracking this Champions League winner…

Sri Lanka secure tenth consecutive win on home soil

Sri Lanka completed formalities shortly before the scheduled luncheoninterval on the fourth day, bowling out Bangladesh for 184 to secure theirtenth consecutive victory on home soil; and their first win without theservices of Muttiah Muralitharan

Charlie Austin30-Jul-2002Sri Lanka completed formalities shortly before the scheduled luncheoninterval on the fourth day, bowling out Bangladesh for 184 to secure theirtenth consecutive victory on home soil; and their first win without theservices of Muttiah Muralitharan since the off-spinner started his career in1992.The tourists, led by 17-year-old Mohammad Ashraful, who confirmed hispotential after a lean period since becoming the youngest ever Testcenturion last September, kept the Sri Lankans at bay for the first hourbefore a collapse that saw six wickets fall for 17 runs. The right-handed Ashraful scored 75 from 120 balls, hitting 12 boundaries, adding 68 runs for the fifth wicket with Alok Kapali (23), whose all-roundperformance on his debut Test drew praise afterwards from coach MohsinKamal. But mid-way through the morning off-spinner Thilan Samaraweera dismissedboth players within the space of eight minutes: Kapali was brilliantlycaught by Jehan Mubarak diving to his right at short leg off bat-pad, whilstAshraful was unfortunate to have also adjudged to have been caught at shortleg off pad only – the luck, not for the first time in this game, not goingBangladesh’s way.Left-armer Sujeewa de Silva, replacing Chamila Gamage, who beat the batrepeatedly during his brisk opening five burst, quickly nipped out TapashBashar (3), courtesy of a stunning airborne catch by Upul Chandana in thegully, and then Fahim Muntasir (1) with a curling yorker.Samaraweera wrapped up proceedings, as the close in fielders snapped up twomore catches: Manjural Islam (0) and Talha Jubair (0) both completing apair.Sri Lanka’s celebrations were muted at the end, the captain and coachadmitting that the victory, though a welcome after a series of defeats, wasof little relevance; the most important aspect of the series being theemergence of fast bowler Chamila Gamage and the batting of Michael Vandort, the Man of the Match here after scores of 61 and 140.”The results from England are still fresh in the mind and it was importantto comeback against Bangladesh as strongly as possible,” said coach DavWhatmore. “A lot of people will say that this is what we are expected to doagainst Bangladesh, and we are painfully aware of that, but you have to pickup the pieces somewhere.”Sanath Jayasuriya, back smiling again, said: “We may have won this seriesbut you can’t say that everything is going our way yet. In these conditionswe know we can do it, but we need to prove ourselves outside Sri Lanka andthere is a lot of hard work to be done in all departments of our game.”He admitted that defeat in England had affected morale: “The truth is thatEngland badly affected our confidence – we didn’t perform up to our ownstandards and it was very disappointing for the whole team. Slowly we haveto get back our old confidence.”The captain, originally uncomfortable with the selector’s experimentation inthis series, was especially delighted by Gamage’s bowling: “Chamila (Gamage)has shown his potential in this match – I think he can compete on theinternational stage.””I’m also impressed with the performance of Michael Vandort,” he added. “Hegrabbed his opportunity in this game and showed that he can score runs inthe top order.”For Bangladesh it was a familiar tale, coach Mohsin Kamal admitting that itwas hard to keep the players positive as the defeats stack up. This wastheir 12th loss in 13 Tests and the 11th consecutive innings in which theyhave failed to pass 200.”It is hard to lose continuously as half of cricket is played in thedressing room,” said Kamal, after his first series in charge, “but the guysjust have to be positive when they are there preparing themselves.”But he remained upbeat about the future: “We got some youngsters in the sidefor this match and they showed that they have a lot of talent – they justneed more experience in Test and four-day cricket.”He singled out the bowlers for special praise: “The bowlers did well, especially yesterday when they were under pressure – they bowled beautifully inthe morning, restricting the Sri Lankan batsmen.”I was also really pleased with the performance of Ashraful. He was under alot of pressure to score runs after not getting runs in the side matches andnot playing in the first Test. He has shown his ability.”Bangladesh can, at least, seek some comfort in the fact that they are notalone in finding it difficult to adjust to the demands of Test cricket: SriLanka had to wait 14 matches before their first victory, Zimbabwe took 11games, India 25 and New Zealand a staggering 45 – Bangladesh will surely notwait that long.

Leeds United now interested in Jeremie Boga

Leeds United are now said to be interested in former Chelsea starlet Jeremie Boga as they look to strengthen Marcelo Bielsa’s forward options.

What’s the story?

The Whites have only made two significant first-team signings this summer, bringing in Junior Firpo from Barcelona and finally securing Jack Harrison on a permanent deal from Manchester City.

Now, The Daily Mail claim that the Yorkshire club have shown an interest in signing Sassuolo forward Boga, who was previously on the books at Stamford Bridge.

The report adds that Serie A side Atalanta have made an offer for the Ivory Coast international, while Leeds’ fellow Premier League teams Everton and Crystal Palace are also said to be keen.

Bye-bye Helder Costa

Amid an impressive season for the club as a whole, one man who really struggled to live up to expectations, was Helder Costa.

The Portugal international just didn’t seem to find his feet at Premier League level, managing just three goals in 22 games in the competition.

That has seen reports now linking him with a move away, with claims that the Whites are ready to cash in on the winger in order to raise some funds for a new signing.

And, after reports emerged of his potential departure, Gabby Agbolahor said: “Costa did not do enough to stay at Leeds. They definitely need another winger. Costa’s had his chance and he’ll be definitely moved on.”

Well, in Boga, they could get that Costa replacement.

Speaking about him before, former Chelsea coach Michael Beale said: “The most unique talent and I’m talking in a window of being 13/14 and he just beat the other team possibly on his own is a young boy called Jeremie Boga.

“He just beat teams on his own, such a lovely boy. I thought wow, this boy is a supreme talent. he can stop and go and over three or four yards, he can just drift past you.”

As per WhoScored, last season saw Boga triple the number of dribbles the Portuguese made per game, while he also averaged more shots and made the exact amount of key passes too – an indication of the kind of directness and fearlessness with which the Sassuolo man plays.

Given that not only can he play on the left, but also on the right too, the Ivorian would add greater strength in depth and quality to the wide options that Bielsa has, and further push Costa down the pecking order.

The £18m-rated Boga’s arrival would surely spell the end for Costa at Elland Road.

Meanwhile, Leeds United have reignited their interest in this star…
