Thilan Thushara, the Sri Lankan fast bowler, has been ruled out of the ongoing three-Test series in India because of a shoulder injury. He will be replaced by Dilhara Fernando, who is expected to join the team on November 18.”Thilan Thushara will return to Sri Lanka due to a shoulder injury, and he will not be match fit for approximately two to four weeks,” Sri Lankan Cricket said in a statement. “Dilhara Fernando will replace him.”Thushara hurt his shoulder after crashing into Kaushal Silva during training on Sunday and the injury did not heal in time for him to play the first Test in Ahmedabad. The decision to replace Thushara with Chanaka Welegedara was taken five minutes before the toss. The expected duration of Thushara’s recovery will rule him out of the one-dayers and Twenty20 internationals that follow the Test series. Fernando’s call-up meant that he would fly to India earlier than planned for he was part of the limited-overs squads. Nuwan Kulasekera is the other reserve fast bowler currently in the Test squad.

Predicted Man Utd XI to face Norwich

Manchester United will be aiming to maintain their unbeaten start under new interim manager Ralf Rangnick when they travel to Carrow Road to take on Norwich City in the Premier League this evening.

The Red Devils secured an encouraging 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace in the 63-year-old’s first game in charge before a second-string side held Young Boys to a 1-1 draw in the Champions League in midweek.

Rangnick is expected to make multiple changes once again for the trip to Norfolk, but he could be without a couple of first team players due to injury and illness.

In Friday’s press conference, the German revealed that Aaron Wan-Bissaka picked up a couple of knocks on Wednesday night, while experienced midfielder Nemanja Matic is suffering from a cold.

It remains to be seen if the duo are able to play any part against Norwich, and they could join long-term absentees Paul Pogba, Raphael Varane and Edinson Cavani on the sidelines.

With that in mind, here’s how Football FanCast expects United to line up for the intriguing clash with the Canaries…

David de Gea is set to keep his place between the sticks after enjoying a stellar campaign, but Dean Henderson’s promising showing against Young Boys will have piled the pressure back on the 31-year-old.

Ahead of the Spain international is set to be a back four made up on Alex Telles, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Diogo Dalot.

Luke Shaw made a successful return from concussion in midweek, but he is likely to be eased back into action, especially after Telles’ eye-catching performance against Palace last weekend.

The usually dependable duo of Fred and Scott McTominay will once again form the base of the midfield for Rangnick, providing a solid foundation from which the forward players can attack.

The boss will have a big call to make over the composition of his forward line, though. The £76.5m-rated Marcus Rashford is currently enduring a seven-game goal drought and may be dropped to the bench as a result.

In his place, Mason Greenwood may get the opportunity to impress after a wonderful strike in midweek, with Cristiano Ronaldo partnering him up front and Jadon Sancho and Bruno Fernandes lining up out wide.

Misbah's future to be decided after first Test

The future of Misbah-ul-Haq as a Test batsman will be decided after the first Test in New Zealand

Misbah-ul-Haq: Waiting game•Associated Press

The future of Misbah-ul-Haq as a Test batsman will be decided after the first Test in New Zealand as Pakistan’s selectors decided to observe the team’s performance.Mohammad Yousuf, the stand-in captain for the three-match series, had earlier called for Misbah to step up and fill Younis Khan’s absence. However, chief selector Iqbal Qasim this week said that Yousuf had not approached the PCB about a possible replacement for Younis. The PCB had been waiting for the return of chairman Ijaz Butt from London, and after a meeting on Friday it was decided that a call be taken only after inspecting Pakistan’s performance in Dunedin.”Seventeen players are [already] in New Zealand. We want to first watch their performance in the opening Test and then we’ll consider the option whether to send Misbah,” Qasim told the .Misbah, 35, was left out from the squads in all three formats for Pakistan’s series of ODIs, T20Is and Tests against New Zealand in the Middle East and New Zealand. His form has been poor in all three formats over the last year, in contrast to 2007, when he reignited his dormant international career in sensational fashion at the World Twenty20 in South Africa and then on a tour to India. The also reported that Qasim said an unusually large 18-man Test squad would be trimmed to 15 for the series in Australia after the New Zealand trip.

The day of the nightwatchmen

Plays of the day for the third day of the second Test between Australia and Pakistan at the MCG

First impressions
First impressions last, especially on Australian crowds, and there are fewbetter ways to do it than what Umar Akmal pulled off. Pakistan’s big battinghope came here with a big reputation and he had been quietly solid towardsthe close of play yesterday. He started off cautiously this morning, but abrutal wake-up call from Peter Siddle, who pinged him square on thehelmet, brought about an audacious response. A couple of Siddle overslater, he drove and pulled him for 19 runs, including a monstroussix over long-on. Impetuosity got him soon after a fourth half-century, but theannouncement had been made.Practice makes perfect?
Pakistan’s catching has been poor in this Test, though it doesn’t seem tobe for want of trying. Intikhab Alam said they are trying to resolve theproblem at the grassroots level and they held a catching session during thetea interval on the third afternoon. Salman Butt dropped three catches ina row during practice, which clearly helped him take the one at deep square legto send back Ricky Ponting a little while later. The day of the night(watchmen)
What Australian nightwatchmen can do, Pakistan’s can do better? Maybe not.Nathan Hauritz frustrated Pakistan yesterday morning for an entiresession, having come in before the end of the first day. MohammadAamer came in to face the last ball of day two and lasted the entire firstsession this morning as well. Hauritz, of course, helped himself to anunusually free-spirited half century in that time, while Aamer did a fairlatter-day impersonation of Hanif Mohammad, grinding out ten runs in twohours. Both innings say something about the pitch though. Not the season’s greetings Hauritz wanted
Pakistan have felt Hauritz could be vulnerable to aggressivebatting and Misbah-ul-Haq wasted no time doing just that. Hauritz’s firstball on the third day was slogged mercilessly over midwicket before thefollowing delivery was smashed to the same region for four. The assaultwas all the more memorable because Pakistan looked like they’d fallenasleep for the previous ten overs, which had brought 13 runs. The captainMohammad Yousuf had set the precedent on the second day, when he came tothe crease and within three balls launched Hauritz high over his head forsix.Hussey’s review deja vu
Michael Hussey asked for a review when he was adjudged lbw toAamer and Hawkeye showed the impact in line with offstump and indicated the ball would clip the bails. The line-ball naturemeant that Billy Doctrove’s on-field decision of out remained, and therewas a distinct sense of deja vu for Hussey. In the first innings he hadalso questioned Doctrove’s lbw decision when he was out sweeping SaeedAjmal, and, on that occasion, too, Hawkeye showed the ball striking him marginally in line and probably clipping the bails. But on neither occasion was Doctrove’s decision shown to be wrong, implying the system had worked.Kiss of the day
Aamer bowled a fiery spell to a sturdy Shane Watson to liven upthe final session. He peppered him with bouncers from round the wicket, clocking over 150kmph on a couple of occasions. Still he found time toshow Watson some love, following a particularly brutal short-pitcheddelivery with a delicate air kiss in his follow-through. Much toeveryone’s disappointment, Watson didn’t return the favour, though it would’ve made for a nice PR gesture given his antics against West Indies.

AVFC make Joe Gomez offer

Even though Aston Villa have only managed to concede five goals in the six Premier League games that Steven Gerrard has taken charge of as their new manager, after conceding 13 in the five consecutive defeats that cost Dean Smith his job, it seems as though the Midlands club are looking to strengthen their defence in the upcoming January transfer window.

With a recent report from Italian media outlet Calciomercato (via Daily Express) claiming that Villa have made an offer to fellow Premier League club Liverpool to sign defender Joe Gomez, it appears that Gerrard is wasting no time in adding some new faces to the squad.

Since joining Liverpool back in the 2015 summer transfer window from Charlton Athletic in a deal worth a reported fee of £3.5m, Gomez has made a total of 130 appearances across all competitions, winning the Premier League and Champions League along the way.

Despite his vast experience at the age of 24, the defender, who is currently earning a weekly wage of £85k-per-week according to Salary Sport, has only made three Premier League appearances this season, all coming off the substitutes bench, which suggests to us that Gomez is not at the top of the pecking order at Liverpool for the centre-back position and could potentially be convinced to leave and join a club like Villa with the promise of regular game time.

Labelled as a “sensational” player by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, Gerrard would certainly blow a lot of Villa fans away if he were able to lure Gomez to Villa Park next month.

After all, not only would they be adding a proven Premier League player to their squad from an elite club who have won the Champions League and top-flight recently, but they’d also be acquiring a young player with enormous potential to bolster Villa’s defence alongside the likes of Ezri Konsa and England colleague, Tyrone Mings.

If Villa haven’t actually made an offer to Liverpool for Gomez but are interested in signing him, they should definitely explore the possibility of bringing him to Villa Park and negotiating with Gerrard’s former club.

However, with Gomez having an unfortunate injury record with three very big injuries under his belt during his time at the Merseyside club, this should be taken into account over whether or not Villa go all in to sign him next month.

Celtic: Hoops poised to sign Johnny Kenny

Celtic are ‘days’ away from completing the signing of striker Johnny Kenny from Sligo Rovers, according to The Sligo Champion (via The Irish Independent).

The lowdown: Celtic busy

Celtic have already made three signings this month, recruiting Daizen Maeda, Yosuke Ideguchi and Reo Hatate from the J1 League.

Kenny, who’s scored three goals in as many appearances for the Republic of Ireland at Under-19 level, looks set to be the fourth.

The 18-year-old frontman has caught the eye after bagging 12 goals in his 34 senior outings for Rovers.

There could also be outgoings at Parkhead in a busy January window, with Vasilis Barkas and Conor Hazard some of those expected to depart.

The latest: Hoops win the race

According to the report, Celtic look to have won the battle with Scottish Premiership rivals Hibernian for Kenny’s signature.

Hibs made a ‘huge’ effort to land Kenny, inviting him to a game at Easter Road last month.

But he appears to have opted for Celtic, who will duly pay his €150,000 release clause as well as add-ons.

The verdict: Exciting long-term addition

Kenny may be part of the reserve set-up initially. He’s still very young, and the step-up in quality is considerable – the Scottish Premiership is the ninth-best league in Europe, while the top flight in Ireland ranks 40th, so it’s hard to envisage the teenager making the immediate step up into Ange Postecoglou’s senior options.

Celtic fans, then, may need to show patience – he’s not being signed to make an immediate impact like the J1 League trio – but the club are clearly convinced of his potential having raced in front of Hibs to secure a deal.

Indeed, there’s apparently been ‘massive interest’ in Kenny ever since last season, when he made his first-team debut for Rovers, so perhaps the Hoops’ recruitment team are onto a winner in the long run.

In other news, Celtic apparently want this deal ‘wrapped up’.
