Com uma grande atuação no primeiro tempo, o Grêmio venceu a LDU por 3 a 2 e garantiu seu lugar nas oitavas de final da Libertadores. Os gols de Walace, Bobô e Douglas deram à vitória ao Tricolor, que sofreu no fim do jogo no Estádio Casa Blanca – localizado a 2.8 mil metros acima do nível do mar -, em Quito, no Equador.

A equipe de Roger Machado alcançou os oito pontos e não pode ser mais alcançada na segunda posição do Grupo 6 do torneio continental. Com 13 pontos, o mexicano Toluca é o líder da chave, que ainda tem San Lorenzo, da Argentina, e LDU – ambos já eliminados com três pontos.

O Grêmio fecha a fase de grupos em casa. Na próxima terça-feira, dia 19, o Tricolor recebe o Toluca na Arena, em Porto Alegre, às 21h45. Apenas para cumprir tabela, LDU e San Lorenzo jogam no mesmo horário, em Buenos Aires.

​O início foi preocupante para o Grêmio. Ocupando o campo de ataque, a LDU balançou a rede logo aos dois minutos. Alemán cobrou falta na área, Romero desviou de cabeça, mas o impedimento já havia sido bem marcado.

A estratégia de Roger Machado – de sair jogando com passes curtos – foi atrapalhada pela má condição do gramado, e Marcelo Grohe teve trabalho.

Apesar das dificuldades, a organização levou o Grêmio ao gol. Aos 12, Luan recebeu na entrada da área, em vacilo da zaga adversária. Em vez de bater, o camisa 7 tocou para Douglas, que cortou a marcação e fez um golaço: 1 a 0.

A vantagem fez bem ao time de Roger Machado. Mais à vontade, o Imortal saiu tocando da defesa e voltou a castigar a LDU. Giuliano deu assistência perfeita para Bobô, que finalizou rasteiro e ampliou o marcador. A Liga mostrou poucos recursos, forçando apenas as jogadas pela direita, mas não voltou a ameaçar.

O susto, porém, veio logo 30 segundos após a volta do intervalo. Quinteros recebeu na direita e finalizou forte, sem chances para Marcelo Grohe. Na sequência, o goleiro do Grêmio impediu o empate em finalização de Morales.

O Imortal não se desesperou e Walace, dono do meio-campo, coroou a atuação com um golaço. Domínguez saiu mal do gol e a bola se ofereceu ao volante gremista, que,da entrada área, acertou um chutaço no ângulo direito: 3 a 1.

A LDU buscou o ataque, mas voltou a repetir os erros da primeira etapa. Insistindo na bola aérea, os equatorianos levaram pouco perigo à meta de Grohe. Foi no chute de fora da área que a Liga conseguiu diminuir o placar. Cevallos arriscou de longe, a bola desviou e enganou o goleiro gremista.

Coube então ao Grêmio resistir à pressão da desorganizada Liga de Quito. Roger Machado colocou Bressan e Lincoln no lugar de Luan e Bobô, mas foi Geromel, Fred e Marcelo Grohe que fizeram os desarmes precisos e garantiram o Grêmio nas oitavas de final da Copa Libertadores.

According to Express, Arsenal have started the talks with Kia Joorabchian, Philippe Coutinho’s agent, in hopes of potentially sealing that deal in the upcoming summer transfer window. The Barcelona man is now once again on the market after spending a season on loan at Bayern Munich.

Of course, he will first aim to finish the Champions League campaign with the Bavarian giants and will then start thinking about a potential transfer away from the Catalans.

However, there are other teams also willing to sink their teeth into this deal and the Gunners just might face stern competition from the Premier League as the likes of Tottenham Hotspur were also previously linked, albeit to the major dissatisfaction of their fans.

Express also explain that Arsenal are not exactly sitting on heaps of money and Barcelona currently value their flopped playmaker at around £73m, which would, as it seems, be out of reach for the London team. But, in that case, Arsenal could potentially offer some of their own players in an attempt to lower the asking price.

Matteo Guendouzi, for instance, is a name that often pops out in those conversations. Mundo Deportivo, however, claim the Catalans are not interested in anything like that, preferring a loan with a big fee if a permanent transfer can’t be negotiated.

One positive for Arsenal would be the fact Joorabchian mentioned Coutinho is open to a return to the Premier League, as per Express’ report, and this could indeed throw a lifeline to the Gunners.

Verdict

Even though he’s had a couple of rough spells ever since his big-money transfer from Liverpool to Barcelona, Coutinho is still quite an impactful player on his day. Landing him could seriously boost Mikel Arteta’s squad.

However, as is the case with most big-name players on today’s market, the Brazilian would come with a hefty price tag above his head. But the report mentions the Catalans would be open for a loan deal as well and maybe this is an avenue the Gunners could potentially explore.

Arteta has slowly but surely been improving the team and maybe they already have what it takes to attract Coutinho back to the Premier League.

Com atuações individuais destacadas, o Flamengo derrotou o Confiança por 3 a 0, na noite desta quarta-feira, em Volta Redonda, pela Copa do Brasil. Com isso, o time (que perdeu na ida, em Aracaju, por 1 a 0) está classificado para a segunda fase da Copa do Brasil.

Todo o time rubro-negro foi bem. Mas quatro jogadores estiveram acima da média. Mancuello teve atuação excelente, fazendo o primeiro gol, chutando duas faltas com perigo (uma na trave) e finalizando com perigo em outras duas oportunidades; Marcelo Cirino ratificou a boa fase marcando dois gols; Willian Arão se destacou nas assistências. Foi dele os passes para os três gols. E o estreante Fernandinho também foi destaque, sendo muito efetivo no primeiro tempo.

O JOGO
Com o Confiança muito fechado, marcando da sua intermediária com duas linhas de quatro e os dois homens de frente voltando para fechar o meio, o time teve maior volume. O estreante Fernandinho, flutuando bem, distribuía as jogadas.

Foram vários escanteios em sequência e os laterais criando jogadas pelos flancos, fazendo cruzamentos que William Arão e Juan cabecearam com perigo.

Mas quem fez a diferença foi Mancuello. Depois ter chutado da entrada da área pela esquerda uma bola que passou raspando, o argentino abriu o placar para o Rubro-Negro aos 24 minutos. Em boa trama pela esquerda, Fernandinho cruzou para a área e Arão ajeitou de cabeça para a entrada de Mancuello. O gringo deu um toque meio sem jeito de joelho, o suficiente para tirar o goleiro Rafael Sandes da jogada e colocar a bola na rede.

Mancuello sobrava. Foi um chute seu (que o goleiro Rafael espalmou) a melhor chance que o Rubro-Negro teve antes do intervalo.

Na volta do segundo tempo, o Flamengo passou a atacar mais pela direita e mostrou maior eficácia ofensiva, entrando facilmente na área. O Confiança ficou ainda mais fechado, fazendo faltas próximas da área. E Mancuello deitou e rolou. Cobrou falta na trave no primeiro minuto; no minuto seguinte, entrou livre e bateu em cima do goleiro. Aos sete, nova falta e a nova defesa díficil do goleiro. Estava insuportável para o campeão sergipano e, aos dez, Mancuello cobrou escanteio que Willian Arão desviou para Marcelo Cirino concluir para fazer 2 a 0.

Com o placar favorecendo o Flamengo, o Confiança – que então precisava de um gol para se classificar – tentou jogar um pouco mais adiantado, com o técnico Fahel colocando o atacante Kivel no lugar do volante Flavio, buscando municiar Tiago Orobó, até então isolado na frente. Foi um erro, pois deu ao Flamengo a possibilidade de contra-ataques. Foi assim que o time carioca chegou ao terceiro gol aos 20 minutos. Wilian Arão recebeu antes do meio de campo e fez lançamento perfeito para Marcelo Cirino entrar desmarcado, driblar o goleiro e fazer um belo gol, fechando o placar e já começando a pensar na semifinal do Campeonato Carioca contra o Vasco, no domingo, em Manaus.

A opção por reintegrar os jogadores ao elenco seria o caminho natural para a diretoria do Flamengo tomar. Além de os atletas estarem de folga quando a festa ocorreu, deixá-los afastados faria com o que perdessem a forma às vésperas do fim de temporada. Isto causaria uma desvalorização deles no mercado em época de negociação.

Não vejo nada de mal em escalar estes jogadores na próxima partida, afinal, devem estar em boas condições de jogo. Porém, o Flamengo tinha de começar o ano de 2016 com diretoria nova.

​A impressão que este episódio passa é de que o assunto foi mal conduzido pela diretoria. A cúpula do Flamengo precisava ter conversado com os jogadores para esclarecer a polêmica da festa, antes de precisar voltar atrás por tomar uma decisão intempestiva.

Porém, este episódio é o de menor proporção em uma gestão marcada pelos erros nas tomadas de decisões. Tanto que, se estiverem aptos a jogar, não vejo problema em escalar os atletas no fim de semana.

O problema é que o Flamengo precisa definir, de fato, sua filosofia, o perfil de jogadores que quer a partir da próxima temporada. Ao que tudo indica, boa parte dos “perdoados” não interessa ao clube para o ano que vem, por exemplo.

OLLIE WATKINS – HIS CAREER SO FAR

Ollie Watkins is a 25-year-old centre-forward currently playing his football over at Brentford in the Championship. He grew up in Newton Abbot and some of his first gigs in the sport that would later on become his life were at Exeter City. He finally joined their academy at U11 level, having previously been rejected when he was only nine years old in 2003. But that stay in the academy would indeed prove to be quite good and Watkins sore through the ranks to land into the first-team after only a year.

He signed his scholarship in 2012 and by 2014, he also penned his first professional contract, winning his first call-ups and appearances for Exeter in the 2013/14 season. And this was a start of something special for the youngster as he would remain at the club for the following couple of years, albeit with a short loan spell at Weston-super-Mare along the way.

The loan happened between 2014 and 2015 and Watkins would record 24 appearances for the Seagulls, scoring ten goals and actually developing quite a bit as well. This was essentially his first big shot at a regular role in a senior team and he embraced it with both hands. And upon return to Exeter, Watkins was adamant on succeeding there as well.

The now 25-year-old forward ended up playing a total of 78 games for them, scoring 26 goals and also adding 17 assists on the side as well. Needless to say, it was quite a return for such a young player and soon afterwards, Brentford came knocking on the door. In the summer of 2017, Watkins joined the Bees on a four-year contract, signing an extension soon after that, in 2019.

Since then, he has scored 49 goals and assisted 17 across 142 games for Brentford, surely cementing his spot as one of the most important players in the squad and one that has gone through tremendous development since his early years at Exeter and beyond that.

Now, it doesn’t really come as a surprise that he is a wanted man and could very well be on the move to greener pastures quite soon. He is surely ready for it.

TRANSFER LATEST

With his rise through the ranks, Watkins has become a prime target for many Premier League outfits as of late and many transfer rumours have indeed connected him with a switch to the English top-tier. Some of the latest transfer news, however, suggest the newly-promoted Leeds United might look to secure his signature in an attempt to boost their squad for the upcoming challenge.

The 25-year-old has been tipped to join the Whites in numerous Leeds United transfer news so far and it will be interesting to see how Brentford respond to the rumours.

As it currently stands, the Bees might indeed struggle to keep Watkins around for much longer.

PLAYER PROFILE

Even though he used to be a winger by trade, Watkins has successfully transitioned into the role of a centre-forward. All of his best traits that he possessed as a wide man, however, have been retained and combined with the new skill set he had to adopt with the switch, the 25-year-old comes with an impressive package, to say the least.

He is extremely athletic and can use his clever positioning and off-the-ball movement to confuse the markers and both create and exploit the space behind their backs brilliantly. When necessary, Watkins can also be used to pin back the centre-backs and give more freedom to his teammates that way. With good dribbling abilities as well as knowing when to drop, drift or move away from his position, courtesy of his winger days, the 25-year-old can cause chaos in the final third.

On top of that, he seems to give Brentford a decent aerial threat as well.

Jorginho, de tantos méritos neste reconstruído Vasco, já começou o jogo perdendo para Eduardo Baptista. Wellington Silva, lateral-direito de origem, foi escalado na esquerda, onde marcaria melhor as investidas de Madson. O técnico cruz-maltino, então, prontamente deslocou Nenê, articulador central do Vasco, para a ponta-direita, onde em momento algum, desde que chegou, ele conseguiu render.

Assim, o esquema tático que vinha funcionando, sumiu. Durante todo o primeiro tempo, o que se viu no Estádio Nilton Santos pareceu apenas um remendo da equipe que tanto havia melhorado. Raras investidas, Jorge Henrique e Leandrão isolados, e Andrezinho, tanto quanto Julio dos Santos, não tinha jogada para fazer.

E Jorginho mexeu no intervalo. Além das trocas dos atacantes titulares (citados acima) por Rafael Silva e Riascos, o treinador ainda fez mais uma logo depois. Saiu a preocupação tática e entrou o desespero. Com Eder Luis, a equipe ganhou mais um velocista, mesmo sem ter armadores jogando bem – apesar de a falta de meias ser um problema de montagem do elenco.

A pressão final foi o que se esperava, até pelo jogador a mais. Porém, é preciso melhorar. É preciso acertar sempre para escapar do rebaixamento. As rodadas estão favoráveis (pelo menos nas três últimas, a maioria dos resultados tem ajudado). Assim como chamou atenção, recentemente, a imprecisão na pontaria dos jogadores, a do técnico não pode ser desprezada.

O Vasco não está rebaixado. Mas quase todos os jogadores caíram no gramado abatidos, ontem. De todo modo, são estes mesmos atletas que precisam dar resposta técnica antes que seja tarde. A situação piorou? Naturalmente. O problema maior é a carga de pressão com a qual o Gigante da Colina vai encarar os poderosos ataques de Palmeiras e Corinthians na sequência do campeonato.

Burnley have begun transfer talks with a French midfielder who has drawn comparisons with two-time Premier League winner N’Golo Kante.

The Daily Mail reported that the Clarets have held talks with Ligue 1 side Angers over a move for Baptiste Santamaria, who is valued in the region of £12m and has drawn comparisons with his fellow countryman at Chelsea.

As per Daily Mail, Aston Villa had targeted the 25-year-old earlier this year, with Leicester and Everton also having their attention piqued by the midfielder.

Santamaria has been a mainstay of Angers’ first XI for the last four years, racking up 146 appearances for the club, with 134 of those coming in the French top flight. He started all 28 of their Ligue 1 games last season before the league was curtailed amid the global pandemic, scoring once and providing one assist (as per TransferMarkt).

Kante’s ball-winning abilities as a midfield anchor have been lauded by the likes of Eden Hazard and Sir Alex Ferguson, and Santamaria also stands out for his knack of breaking up opposition attacks. He won 3.3 tackles per game in Ligue 1 last season and even that was only a slight improvement from 3.1 the previous campaign, along with averaging 1.6 interceptions per game in 2019/20 (as per WhoScored).

To put that in context, nobody at Burnley last term had a higher tackling average than 2.4 per game, while only two men (both defenders) had a better interceptions average than the Angers midfielder (as per WhoScored). The 25-year-old is no slouch when he gets the ball, either, with his passing success rate of 81.5% bettered only by Josh Brownhill (82.5%) among Sean Dyche’s squad.

The Clarets were linked with another tough-tackling midfielder in recent days in Huddersfield’s Lewis O’Brien, whose match averages of 3.2 successful tackles and 1.2 interceptions are impressive yet slightly below Santamaria’s level. However, the Terriers man often plays in an advanced midfield role, in contrast to the Frenchman’s position at the base of midfield.

Santamaria’s statistics certainly suggest that he would make Burnley’s midfield a sturdier unit and one which will not be bypassed easily by opposing teams. Also, at 25, the Frenchman boasts plenty of top division experience and yet is only set to come into the peak years of his career now.

Just as Kante was plucked from Caen by Leicester five years ago, Burnley could yet pull off their own left-field raid on Ligue 1 if they can complete a deal for Angers’ no-nonsense midfielder.
