Tottenham Could Repeat Sissoko Success With £20m Gem

Despite still waiting to name a new permanent head coach, Tottenham Hotspur appear to be already cracking on with their summer transfer dealings, with chairman Daniel Levy seemingly eyeing up potential targets in a bid to improve upon their recent, eighth-place finish in the Premier League.

Among those who the Lilywhites are reportedly keeping tabs on is Leeds United sensation, Jack Harrison, with the wing wizard potentially set to be up for grabs following the Yorkshire side's recent relegation.

According to Football Insider, the 26-year-old – who was the subject of a £20m offer from Leicester City in January – is one of a handful of Elland Road stars that Levy and co are looking at, with the Englishman set to be available on a cut-price deal due to the presence of a relegation clause in his existing deal.

Despite Leeds' collective woes, the "incredible" talent – as hailed by former boss Jesse Marsch – still managed to rack up a respectable haul of five goals and seven assists in the top flight, having been described as "one of the best wingers in the Premier League" by his ex-New York City FC teammate, Frank Lampard, back in August.

Although there may be concern among Spurs supporters at the prospect of signing a player who has only recently been relegated, the hope will be that a move for Harrison could prove yet another masterclass for Levy, in the mould of the signing of Moussa Sissoko.

How good was Moussa Sissoko for Tottenham?

Much like the Leeds asset, Sissoko was signed from Newcastle United in the summer of 2016 following the Magpies' drop into the Championship, with the north London outfit forking out £30m in order to prise the Frenchman from St James' Park.

Despite the 71-cap international's initial struggles in his new home – having made just eight league starts during his debut season at the club – the 6 foot 2 menace ultimately established himself as a vital figure in Mauricio Pochettino's squad.

Tottenham's Moussa Sissoko

The one-time Toulouse man memorably played a key role in the club's surge to the Champions League final in 2019 after featuring in ten of Tottenham's 13 games in the competition that season, impressively averaging two tackles and one interception per game en route to the showpiece.

As pundit Noel Whelan stated in October 2019, Sissoko looked to have been "transformed" following his initial woes at N17, with the towering asset emerging as a "massive player" for both Pochettino and the club, prior to his departure for Watford in 2021.

The signing of the versatile midfielder – who racked up 202 appearances for the Lilywhites and featured in a variety of positions during his five-year stay – has showcased the benefits of acquiring a player from a recently-relegated outfit, hence why it could prove a real masterstroke if Harrison was to follow suit this summer.

'Technical' delay, rain, wet field: bizarre no-result

A 40-minute “technical” delay at the start of the match and a 20-minute shower later resulted in a bizarre no-result in the second T20I

International cricket has lost valuable time in strange circumstances in recent weeks – bright daylight but non-drying outfields in rainy months – but what happened in Lauderhill on Sunday might just be too bizarre for even cricket to come up with. For 40 minutes at the start of the day, on another beautiful sunny morning, the full house at the ground was denied cricket because the broadcasters suffered an “unavoidable” and “technical” problem. Once the game began India bowled superbly to bowl West Indies out for 143, but two overs into the chase, a 20-minute shower was enough to ensure the three remaining overs required to constitute a result would not be bowled. This two-match series, which West Indies won 1-0, was supposed to be an exercise to take the game into a new market, a market where fans are used to being treated better than cricket tends to treat fans in India. They would have been in for a rude surprise when, after paying steep prices for their tickets, they didn’t even get a proper public announcement explaining the delayed start. The broadcasters had paid massive sums for the rights and deserved some consideration, but there was rain expected later in the afternoon. You can imagine the eggshells the match officials would have walked on while sanctioning that delay. That was not the last bizarre act of the day. At around 12.40pm, with India looking to be on their way to a win having restricted West Indies, it rained for around 20 minutes. The ground didn’t have a Super Sopper, and wasn’t covered fully. The business area was promptly ready for play and the deep parts of the outfield drained well too, but the top of the bowlers’ run-ups, around the area where the painted advertisements are, didn’t dry up. The captains were seen looking at that particular area with concern minutes before the game was called off at 2pm.The official presentation was carried out in gloomy circumstances with the official interviewer steering clear of even mentioning the delayed start, without which the crowd would have had a result. The studio shows and the official interviewer only spoke of how humans are helpless against “mother nature” and “weather”. Without being prompted, the West Indies captain Carlos Brathwaite said he hoped the drainage and equipment would improve at the ground, which he said was a wonderful venue otherwise. It would have been particularly disappointing for the India fans who would have been expecting to celebrate a bowling comeback after their side went for 245 on Saturday, and the comeback of Amit Mishra. He last played a Twenty20 international during the World T20 in 2014. In the next year-and-a-half India only played bilateral Twenty20 internationals, not bothering with flying in T20 specialists for one or two three-hour matches. By the time India started taking T20 internationals seriously again, in the lead-up to the 2016 World T20, Mishra had lost out to Pawan Negi and Harbhajan Singh without being given a chance to build on his impressive bowling in 2014.Now, perhaps precisely because India didn’t bother to fly in T20 specialists for another bilateral series, Mishra got another chance, and made immediate impact to help India bowl West Indies out for 143.Mishra removed Johnson Charles with the first ball he bowled, inside the Powerplay. Charles had run away to 43 off 24 in the first five overs, but Mishra began with a front-of-the-hand legbreak that followed Charles as opposed to turning away, cramping him up, getting him caught at long-on. After that the spinners choked the life out of the West Indies batting. Ravindra Jadeja zipped through with quiet overs, and R Ashwin bowled cleverly to take the wickets of Lendl Simmons and Kieron Pollard. The fact that spinners bowled so well just after the Powerplay meant India could afford to introduce Jasprit Bumrah after the 10th over. He prefers the ball to be as old as possible. Bumrah responded immediately with the wicket of Marlon Samuels, and the others tightened the screws around him. West Indies, with Brathwaite coming in at No. 9, kept coming hard at India even though they kept losing wickets. India still kept taking wickets, bowling West Indies out for a below-par score, but they were powerless against the “weather”.

We don't disregard any format – Holder

After a crushing 111-run loss in the opening match of the ODI series, Jason Holder has reiterated that West Indies take all three formats equally seriously, even if their results in Tests and ODIs have been far worse than those in T20Is

Jason Holder said West Indies’ batting, and in particular their strike rotation, needed to improve•AFP

After a crushing 111-run loss in the opening match of the ODI series against Pakistan, Jason Holder has reiterated that West Indies take all three formats equally seriously, even if their results in Tests and ODIs have been well below the standard they have achieved in the shortest format. While West Indies place fourth in the T20I rankings and are the reigning World Champions in the format, they languish in eighth place in the Test and ODI rankings.”I think we focus equally on Test match cricket, T20 cricket and one-day cricket,” the West Indies Test and ODI captain said. “Results have shown that we have done better at T20 cricket over the recent past, but we don’t disregard any of the other two formats.”On this tour of the UAE, though, West Indies have failed to click in the T20s too, losing them 0-3 before Friday’s ODI mauling. Holder identified the batting as the main area in need of improvement. West Indies’ top order crumbled in all three T20s, and the batting failed once again in the first ODI with the side sliding to 175 all out in pursuit of 287.”In this situation, we need to turn things around and we really need to look at ways we can improve,” he said. “Obviously one big area is the batting. We did see off the new ball [in the ODI]. It’s just a matter of rotating the strike a bit better than we did today. I think once we do that we should go into the next match in better stead.”The next ODI in the three-match series will be played on Sunday in Sharjah.

Liverpool In Discussions To Sign £52m Star

Liverpool are close to confirming their first signing of the summer with Alexis Mac Allister due to make his move to Anfield official imminently and now a reliable source has given an update on the club's next steps.

What's the latest on Liverpool's interest in Khephren Thuram?

Italian journalist and transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Liverpool have held discussions in their pursuit of signing OGC Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram this summer.

Romano revealed on Twitter: "Liverpool have been in direct contact with both Manu Koné and Khephren Thuram agents again this week.

"Internal discussion taking place over official proposals. Liverpool asked for some time to close in on Mac Allister deal then decide on new midfielders."

Why should Liverpool sign Khephren Thuram?

It is no secret that a midfield rebuild is the top priority for Jurgen Klopp and Jorg Schmadtke this summer with Mac Allister looking like the first player who will spark the start of a new generation at Anfield.

The Reds have confirmed that Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner will be exiting the club upon their contract expiration next month, so adding some much-needed depth and injecting some youth into the centre of the pitch will be essential.

Although the signing of Mac Allister will be a great place to start, there is still plenty of work to be done to ensure that Liverpool can comfortably compete next season and bring back Champions League football to Anfield.

As a result, snapping up the services of Thuram would be a huge coup, especially considering that he could be the perfect player to partner up with the Argentine World Cup winner to revolutionise the Liverpool midfield.

kephren-thuram-premier-league-liverpool-transfer-news

The France international – a product of Monaco's development programme – has taken massive strides this season becoming a key player for Nice and rightfully earned his first-ever senior appearance for his national team a few months ago too.

Over 35 Ligue 1 appearances, the 22-year-old whiz – who has a reported price tag of €60m (£52m) – has created nine big chances, tallied up an 87% pass completion rate and registered four assists, as well as averaging 1.1 key passes and 1.3 successful dribbles, proving he is incredibly threatening in attacking play.

Not only that, Thuram is prolific in winning possession of the ball too with 59.7% successful take-ons, 89 tackles and interceptions won combined and 146 ball recoveries, demonstrating that he is a reliable box-to-box midfielder who can cover the ground needed to significantly improve Liverpool's performances.

The son of legendary French defender Lilian Thuram and brother of Bundesliga striker Marcus has earned high praise from his teammate Aaron Ramsey who revealed Thuram's best attributes:

"Khéphren is another talented player here. I think he’s definitely got a big future ahead of him if he carries on the way he’s going at the minute. He’s very dangerous, very powerful, a very strong dribbler of the ball."

Whilst the young talent brings the energy to dominate in the middle of the pitch, Mac Allister thrives when he's breaking the lines between midfield and attack to either create killer opportunities for the forwards or grasp a chance himself with ten goals, two assists and four big chances created for Brighton and Hove Albion this season.

With that being said, if Klopp can secure the services of Thuram this summer it could spark an incredible partnership with Mac Allister next season and provide Liverpool with an unstoppable attacking-minded force from midfield that could chaos for opponents.

Wrexham Look Set To Secure Huge In-House Agreement

It has been reported that Wrexham goalkeeper Ben Foster is set to sign a new contract to remain with the Welsh club.

Why does Ben Foster play for Wrexham?

The former Manchester United and England goalkeeper retired from football at the end of the 2021/22 season having been relegated from the Premier League with Watford.

However, in March owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney convinced him to return to the club – 18 years after he'd spent a loan spell at the Racecourse Ground – on a short-term deal until the end of the season just past.

Since putting on the Wrexham kit once again, Foster has been a great success as he helped the team earn promotion back into the Football League, even saving a 97th-minute penalty against rivals Notts County.

And there had been talk that he could be happy to stay on next term as the club play in League 2, with the player himself hinting at a possible new deal during the bus parade.

Well, it has now been reported by TEAMtalk that the goalkeeper is indeed set to sign a new deal to stay at Wrexham for at least one more campaign.

Will Ben Foster sign a new contract at Wrexham?

It's unclear how long that new deal might be for, but when fans were heard shouting to Foster “One more year, one more year!” during the title celebrations, the shot-stopper raised two fingers, suggesting that he could be sticking around for another few seasons instead.

To be fair to the Englishman, considering all the fun he's had of late, you can see why he'd be more than happy to commit his future to the Red Dragons.

After all, he recently explained how the club's Hollywood owners spent nearly half a million pounds on the player's end-of-season trip to Las Vegas.

He said: "The way that Rob McElhenney and Ryan put it on for us, laid it on for us, was just like nothing I've ever seen.

"We got there [Vegas] and it was just literally, land, straight to the shower, straight get changed, go to Hakkasan for dinner and then we're going to Hakkasan nightclub straight afterwards.

By the way, all expenses paid – nobody paid a penny for anything."

On the cost, he added: "Got to be £500,000, had to be at least half a million genuinely it had to be because they just looked after everything. It was phenomenal."

All in all, it looks as though The Cycling GK is here to stay.

Floodlit Championship set for end of June

The ECB are planning to stage a round of Championship matches under lights at the end of June next season as England prepare for their first day-night Test

George Dobell23-Oct-20161:39

ECB announces first day-night Test

The ECB is planning to stage a round of Championship matches under lights at the end of June next season as England prepare for their first day-night Test.England are scheduled to play two Tests under lights in 2017. First they will play West Indies at Edgbaston in August, before playing one of the Ashes Tests in Australia at the end of the year. While details are yet to be confirmed, it is understood that the ECB has identified a round of games starting on June 26 for the floodlit matches in the hope that England players will be available. England play a T20I against South Africa in Cardiff on June 25, with the first Test against South Africa starting at Lord’s on July 6.That scheduling is not ideal. It comes just a few days after the longest evening of the year (sunset time is around 10pm) so the value of using lights will be diminished. But the ECB hopes it will attract more spectators to games and provide more data over the strengths and weaknesses of the pink ball and optimum pitch conditions for its usage. It is also one of few rounds where England’s Test specialists are expected to be available. Plans to stage the games in August were rejected as not all teams are scheduled to play at the same time and, in the ECB’s words, “equitability is deemed important”.The Division One games will be hosted by four of Warwickshire, Yorkshire, Essex, Hampshire or Surrey, while the Division Two games will be staged by five of Durham, Kent, Nottinghamshire, Sussex, Northamptonshire and Glamorgan. The ECB has asked each of the counties to ensure there are no issues – such as permission from the local council – with them hosting such games before they confirm the schedule.
