Devlin drops fresh transfer claim

Kieran Devlin has dropped a fresh Celtic transfer claim ahead of the January window.

What’s the talk?

In a claim made on a recent Athletic Q&A, Devlin revealed that, despite a number of Celtic’s lesser-seen talents highly impressing in the 3-2 victory over Real Betis last week, many could nevertheless be set to leave Parkhead on either a temporary or permanent basis this winter.

Speaking about the players who featured in the Europa League win, the journalist said: “Understand that a fair few of the Thursday players are being pencilled for loan or permanent moves in January anyway, so I’m personally still a little hesitant of saying admirable performances against Betis means squad depth is not as poor as it was beforehand.”

Fans will be worried

While Devlin does not make it clear exactly which players who featured last Thursday could be in line for a move away from Glasgow in January, considering just how well the team performed as a whole, the journalist’s claim is sure to have left many of the Parkhead faithful worried.

Indeed, with Postecoglou awarding Celtic debuts to both Osaze Urhoghide and Liam Shaw in the European fixture, as well as handing valuable first-team minutes to players such as Liam Scales, Adam Montgomery and Ewan Henderson, should any of these five players be in line for a permanent exit from the club, it is not a difficult argument to make that it would be something of a mistake on the part of the 56-year-old manager.

Not only did these players all receive admirable scores in the Daily Record’s player ratings for the fixture, they collectively bested a side who currently sit in third place in the LaLiga table, not to mention one who defeated Barcelona at the Camp Nou in the fixture before the Celtic clash.

Indeed, if the Betis clash was a chance to impress Postecoglou, it very much seemed as if all of Urhoghide, Shaw, Scales, Montgomery and Henderson took this opportunity – although, following Devlin’s latest update, it would appear not.

Liverpool fans positive about McGinn rumour

A number of Liverpool fans are in positive spirits about the Reds signing Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn following a report suggesting as such.

Jurgen Klopp will surely be keen to make a few new signings this summer in addition to Ibrahima Konate, who has already joined from RB Leipzig.

Gini Wijnaldum’s exit to Paris Saint-Germain is likely to leave a sizeable void in Liverpool’s midfield, so a new signing there wouldn’t go amiss.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

Borussia Monchengladbach ace Florian Neuhaus has been tipped to join the Reds a number of times, but now McGinn’s name has been thrown into the mix. The Sunday Post (Post Match pullout, 20/06, p2) [via LFC Transfer Room on Twitter] claimed that the Scotland international is on Liverpool’s radar, with the midfielder being valued at £20m.

The 26-year-old started all but one of Aston Villa’s Premier League games last term, with three goals and six assists to his name (Transfermarkt), while only Jack Grealish averaged more than his 1.4 dribbles per game among Dean Smith’s squad (WhoScored).

Moyes must axe Fredericks from West Ham XI

West Ham United will be looking to get back on track when they return to Premier League action this evening.

David Moyes’ side have suffered successive defeats, seeing them drop out of a place in the top-four but they now head to Burnley knowing that a victory would see them cut the gap to Chelsea.

It was the Blues who narrowly defeated the Hammers last time out, winning 1-0 at the London Stadium and the 58-year-old manager now has plenty to ponder in terms of team selection.

You could argue that the Irons more than held their own throughout the 90 minutes, given the scoreline, but the statistics tell a different story as the visitors dominated possession (56%) and enjoyed eight more attempts at goal, as per SofaScore.

It was certainly a tough task in the absence of some key players like Declan Rice, Michail Antonio and Aaron Cresswell. However, those that stepped in failed to deliver and have to be at risk of Moyes wielding his axe.

One name that should be ruthlessly chopped from the starting XI is Ryan Fredericks. He played at left-back, out of position, and that proved to be a very problematic area of the pitch as Mason Mount and Cesar Azpilicueta dominated for large spells.

The 28-year-old lost possession 13 times and was particularly wasteful with the ball, too, completing only 67% of his passes and failing to provide a single accurate cross.

It left Jesse Lingard and Jarrod Bowen, who spearheaded Moyes’ attack, with very little to feed off, so it was no wonder they managed four fewer shots on target than Chelsea.

Ben Johnson has often been the man to go to left wing-back if either of Cresswell or Arthur Masuaku are missing, and perhaps he would be the better option against the more defensively-minded Clarets.

The 21-year-old academy gem “really impressed” Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville last season, with the former Man Utd right-back also claiming that he “looks an excellent defender.”

Whilst he was rather unlikely to lose his place for the Chelsea encounter, considering he was a rare positive in the defeat to Newcastle United a week earlier.

In terms of consistency, Fredericks is amongst Moyes’ worst performers, registering a paltry 6.47 average on WhoScored. And his returns of 0.5 crosses and 0.8 key passes per game rank as the worst when compared to Cresswell, Vladimir Coufal and Masuaku.

The £40k-per-week star just isn’t good enough to be starting for a West Ham side competing for a fierce European spot. He was shocking against Chelsea and has very rarely looked the part this term.

Moyes must show no mercy and axe the Hammers lightweight tonight.

Liverpool eye Jude Bellingham move

Liverpool are among the leading candidates to sign Jude Bellingham.

What’s the word?

That’s according to German outlet BILD, who report that Real Madrid and Liverpool are “already closely monitoring” Bellingham’s development.

The newspaper stated that the England star is the most expensive 18-year-old footballer in the world, whilst being priceless for Dortmund.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

BILD state that Bellingham’s status in the Dortmund hierarchy is expected to rise next season, with the leadership issues at BVB serving as a problem for the Signal Iduna Park side.

The fee may set Liverpool back though, with the German outlet stating this. “One thing is clear: if the ‘BellingBOOM’ continues at this breathtaking pace, the Dortmund diamond will soon become the next ‘over 100 million deal’ for Borussia.”

Worth every penny

From what we have seen of Bellingham so far, along with the metrics that he has produced during his developmental and prosperous time at Dortmund, he is worth every penny of the estimated €100m price tag.

The exchange rate would actually see Bellingham valued at around £83m, bringing the fee closer to his current market value which currently sits at £67.5m according to Transfermarkt.

Though, for an 18-year-old who has been described as a “leader” by teammate Mats Hummels and a “sensation” as per BT Sport, a £100m price tag would still seem worth it – given his identity as a current player, whilst bearing in mind his almost limitless potential.

The England wonderkid who stands at 5 foot 11 has asserted himself as a Dortmund regular ever since his move from Birmingham City in 2020.

This season has seen a big improvement in his goal contributions, with the £49k-per-week talent netting six goals and producing 13 assists in 40 appearances in all competitions.

Even more impressive though, is his record in the Champions League this season. With four goal contributions in six appearances, in the form of one goal and three assists, Bellingham has demonstrated his prowess as a big-game player.

A key attribute that Klopp and the Reds faithful will appreciate though is his ability to lead.

After the 4-1 defeat to RB Leipzig, Bellingham was the only player to stand in front of the fans and applaud them, an act that has made him the new “darling” of the BVB fanbase.

Man Utd must reignite Saul interest

Manchester United could reignite their interest in previous transfer target Saul Niguez in the summer.

The Spanish midfielder has been linked with the Red Devils on numerous occasions in the past, with a move yet to come to fruition.

However, reports from Cadena Ser indicate that he could leave Atletico Madrid in the summer, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer once again waiting in the wings.

This time, the Red Devils must get their man.

Since breaking through into the Atletico first team, the 26-year-old has gone on to become one of the most complete midfield players in Europe.

In 326 appearances for Los Rojiblancos, he has scored 43 goals and notched 18 assists. For a player only just reaching his peak years, that is quite a considerable and impressive record.

His experience in Europe would hugely benefit the Red Devils, with Saul having racked up 59 appearances in the Champions League, reaching two finals as well as lifting the Europa League.

The 19-cap Spanish international thrives in a box-to-box role, not only getting forwards but also being extremely reliable when defending.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-man-united-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=” Latest Man United transfer rumours and news!”]

According to WhoScored, Saul averages 1.5 tackles, 0.9 interceptions and one clearance per game in all competitions.

Whilst this does not take him above Fred in the pecking order of United’s current midfielders, these defensive statistics rate him above Donny van de Beek and Nemanja Matic for those respective metrics.

That crucial role in a midfield trio with the Brazilian would allow Paul Pogba to push further forwards and support Bruno Fernandes in the Red Devils’ attacking play.

Whilst Saul is valued at £49.5m by Transfermarkt having over five years left on his current contract at the Wanda Metropolitano, the reports that Atletico would allow him to leave in the upcoming transfer window could see that asking price lowered.

Now that he is seemingly available, United have to go back and finally get their man at the second time of asking.

Leicester City linked to Ozan Kabak

Leicester City are reportedly interested in signing Schalke centre-back Ozan Kabak after he impressed during a short-term loan spell at Liverpool last season.

What’s the story?

The Reds turned to the 21-year-old as they searched for a solution to their defensive injury crisis but turned down the opportunity to make his stay on Merseyside permanent for £18 million.

As a result, Kabak has been linked with a move to several sides in recent weeks, and well-respected journalist Constantin Eckner has confirmed the Foxes’ interest.

He tweeted: “Ozan Kabak: Leicester are interested in signing the centre-back after he has returned to Schalke who essentially have to sell him, as they are forced to reduce the cost of their squad significantly following relegation.”

Fans should be buzzing

After finishing in fifth place for the second consecutive season, Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers has already been quite active in the transfer market.

Deals for RB Salzburg striker Patson Daka and Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumare appear to be nearing a conclusion, yet defensive reinforcements will also be required.

Experienced duo Christian Fuchs and Wes Morgan have left the King Power Stadium, leaving a sizeable gap in Rodgers’ squad.

Former England international Ryan Bertrand is expected to bolster the full-back positions following his release from Southampton, but a new centre-back will also be required.

Therefore, news that Kabak is being targeted by the Leicester hierarchy should have the club’s supporters buzzing.

The Turkey international recovered from a shaky start to life in England to perform well for Liverpool during his six-month stint at Anfield.

He made 13 appearances for the Reds in all competitions throughout the second half of the recently concluded campaign, helping Klopp’s charges to a third-place finish.

Adding someone with Premier League experience will be a huge bonus as Leicester plot another assault of the top four next term, and his potential arrival would be a big boost to the FA Cup holder’s chances of returning to Europe’s top table.

With Schalke in a poor financial situation, director of football Jon Rudkin may be able to pull off a bargain deal for Kabak, adding to the extensive list of astute purchases he’s overseen.

Wolves transfer update on Palhinha

Wolves are among the top clubs in European football who are eyeing up a move to sign Joao Palhinha in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Palhinha a priority

As reported last month by A Bola (via Sport Witness), Palhinha is a ‘priority target’ for the Midlands club, and they may have an advantage in the long race for his signature.

The news outlet also states that Ruben Vinagre is wanted by Sporting Lisbon, and so a potential swap deal could take place.

The Latest: Another club interested

Now, A Bola (via Sport Witness) are reporting that Atalanta have joined the Molineux faithful in the hunt to sign Palhinha, which also includes Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Sevilla, Atletico Madrid and Napoli.

However, after what the publication describes as ‘good performances’ at Euro 2020, manager Ruben Amorim would now like to keep him in Portugal.

The Lions would have considered a bid in the region of €30m (£25.8m) for their prized asset, but now it is thought that an offer would have to be ‘way over’ that sum to be taken seriously.

The Verdict: Try to negotiate price down

If the Wanderers are serious about beating all of these other teams to signing Palhinha, then they must try and negotiate his price down with Sporting quickly.

Described as a ‘special’ player last season by Amorim, he was key in their domestic title win, winning no fewer than 9.1 duels a game, while also averaging 3.3 tackles, 1.5 interceptions and 1.2 clearances per match (Sofascore).

At just 25 years of age, Palhinha has not his peak yet either, and so WWFC should really push to try to sign him, so long as a reasonable deal can be struck.

THFC: Spurs eyeing move for Kalajdzic

According to a recent report, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in the signing of VfB Stuttgart centre-forward, Sasa Kalajdzic, as a replacement for Spurs’ loanee striker, Carlos Vinicius, this summer.

The report by the Daily Mail claims that, upon the expiry of his season-long loan at Tottenham, Vinicius is set to make a return to Benfica, as Daniel Levy is unwilling to pay the £36 million option to buy clause in the 26-year-old’s contract.

As a result of Vinicius’ impending departure from north London, it is then claimed that Jose Mourinho is searching for replacements for the Brazilian, with Kalajdzic believed to be one of the 58-year-old’s targets.

Last month, a report by Kicker (via Sport Witness) claimed that West Ham United are also interested in the 6 foot 5 Stuttgart forward, for whom the Bundesliga side are thought to be demanding a fee of between €20-25 million (£17.4-21.75 million) to part with this summer.

Transfer Tavern Take

With Vinicius starting just three Premier League fixtures during his loan spell at Spurs so far, with the striker only managing one goal over his total of nine top-flight appearances, it is hardly surprising that the club are unwilling to pay a substantial amount of money for the Brazilian this summer.

And, with Kalajdzic having scored 14 goals and provided four assists over his 27 Bundesliga appearances for Stuttgart this season, as well as the fact the 23-year-old is reportedly available for much less than it would cost to sign Vinicius, it is easy to see why Tottenham may feel that the Austria international would be much better value for money.

MCFC fans react to Kane news

Some Manchester City fans are unhappy after it was revealed that there is a real possibility Harry Kane could join the Citizens for a fee over £100m.

Last week, Kane dropped a bombshell when he revealed he wanted to leave Tottenham this summer (Sky Sports). Other than a few loan spells, the England international has spent his whole career with Spurs, but he has failed to win a single trophy despite scoring over 200 goals for the club (Transfermarkt).

The news of Kane’s desire to leave has attracted plenty of interest from across the Premier League, including City. According to journalist Ian Cheeseman, Kane leaving Spurs and making the move to the Etihad Stadium for a fee of over £100m is a real possibility.

The news was shared on Twitter by @City_Xtra, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts but, although this indicates City could get their hands on a world-class striker, many fans felt the potential fee is too high.

MUFC ace Sancho leaves England squad

Some Manchester United fans have been left fuming as an update emerged on Jadon Sancho.

As per the Red Devils’ official website, the former Borussia Dortmund star will miss England’s remaining September fixtures at home to Andorra and away to Poland respectively.

He missed the 4-0 win in Hungary on Thursday because he sustained a slight injury in training, and it appears to be more serious than first thought given that he has had to withdraw from the England squad.

Manchester United fans will surely be hoping that Sancho can recover in time for them to play Newcastle in their first game back after the international break next Saturday, especially with the prospect of linking up with Cristiano Ronaldo on the veteran’s second Old Trafford debut.
