Ben Stokes undergoes second finger operation with Ashes involvement still in doubt

Long-term prospects boosted after operation to remove scar tissue from injured digit

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Oct-2021Ben Stokes has undergone a second finger operation that looks set to rule him out of the Ashes, but may yet hasten his return to action in the long term.Stokes, who has been on indefinite leave since pulling out of this summer’s Test series against India, sustained a severe break of his left index finger while attempting a catch for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL in April. And according to the Daily Mirror, the same surgeon who operated on the original injury – Leeds-based consultant Doug Campbell – reassessed Stokes’ finger on Monday, removing the metal screws from the now-healed digit, but also addressing the scar tissue that the paper said had been causing “searing” pain around Stokes’ tendons and ligaments.Stokes made an abortive return to action this summer, playing for Durham in the T20 Blast in June before an unexpected call-up for the ODI series against Pakistan in July – when England’s entire white-ball squad was forced into isolation due to a Covid outbreak.Related

Stokes was asked to lead a scratch side that featured nine uncapped players, and even guided England to a remarkable 3-0 series win. However, he required a painkilling injection to get through the contests, and he also seemed troubled by his finger during his two appearances for Northern Superchargers in the inaugural season of the Hundred. He has not played in any form of the game since July 26, after announcing that he would be stepping away from cricket for an indefinite period to focus on his mental wellbeing, and to allow his finger a sustained period of downtime to heal fully.Last month, Stokes was omitted from England’s 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup in the UAE, and with the Ashes negotiations expected to reach a decisive moment this week, he is almost certain to miss that trip too – having also missed the 2017-18 Ashes tour in the aftermath of the Bristol nightclub incident. However, according to The Mirror, the early indications are that Stokes’ latest finger surgery has been a “huge success”, and if that proves to be the case, then he may be better placed to focus on the rest of his comeback. The ECB has since confirmed the details of Stokes’ procedure, adding that he will now “undergo an intensive period of rehabilitation for the next four weeks under the supervision of the ECB’s medical team”. The first Ashes Test is due to get underway at Brisbane on December 8, in just over two months’ time.On Wednesday, Stokes posted a photo on Instagram for the first time since July, posing with his wife Clare with his finger heavily bandaged.

Sri Lanka miss chance to attack part-timers

The big question after the XIs were announced was how India would fare with four specialist bowlers, given that their attack had been expensive in the previous three games when they had played five. After the part-time bowlers took 5 for 112 in 22 overs, though, most were left shaking their heads at the ridiculousness.Sri Lanka had allowed Manoj Tiwary, a batsman bowling steady legbreaks, to take his best List A figures of 4 for 61 while Virender Sehwag got a wicket in eight economical overs of loopy offbreaks. The hosts made 251 for 8 after an opening partnership of 91, and Mahela Jayawardene was left to rue his side’s seventh loss in eight ODI series since the 2011 World Cup after yet another Virat Kohli century.India’s three medium-pacers bowled just six overs each as Sri Lanka struggled against Tiwary and Sehwag, who bowled 12 straight overs from the 31st to the 42nd for a combined return of 3 for 50. Jayawardene said the pitch and the part-timers were both slow and that Sri Lanka lost too many wickets to be able to accelerate.”[It was] probably a 280-290 wicket [so we were] maybe 30 runs short because of the way we batted,” Jayawardene said. “But no excuses, we never handled certain situations well and created a hole which was tough for us to get out of. The plan was to take on the fifth bowler. But it is tough to do that when we were losing wickets. We never had the momentum. We lost wickets in the Powerplays and didn’t have any control.”[We were] trying to build partnerships so that we could have a platform which we didn’t. We had to accelerate as well, we knew the score we were going to post wasn’t going to be enough on this wicket. Trying to take risk didn’t work. We didn’t execute the plan well and credit to the Indians they kept putting a lot of pressure on our guys.”Kohli also commented on the lack of pace in the pitch and praised Tiwary’s performance in his first ODI since December 2011. “It is a slow wicket so even if the part-timers land the ball in the right areas they can do the job if you want to play seven batsmen,” Kohli said. “And it was good for Manoj as well because he hadn’t got a game for a while and he got to play again. It’s all about giving the challenge to the guy who has been sitting on the bench and seeing how he reacts to it. I think he did a brilliant job for us with ball. Couldn’t capitalise with the bat [although] he got a good start. But as I said, the part-timers can be effective if bowled at the right time and if they bowl in the right areas so it was worth taking a chance and it paid off for us today.”Sri Lanka had India at 109 for 4 during the chase but Suresh Raina survived a close shout for caught-behind on 2 and was dropped by Jayawardene on 19, the same score on which he had been put down in the third game. Raina went on to make an unbeaten 58 in a match-winning partnership of 146 with Kohli, who was also dropped, on 100. Jayawardene credited India for handling the pressure better.”They handled those situations better than us. We needed a couple more wickets when they were four down. I thought we got Suresh caught behind but I don’t know how the others felt about it. But that is how the game goes. Things could have probably been different but we move on.”Jayawardene was asked what it would take for Sri Lanka to beat India, against whom they have just two wins from their previous ten meetings. “They have got a good batting line-up. In the last two-three years what we found is to control them we need to pick up wickets and that is what we have been trying to do with five bowlers all the time. I think they win matches with their batting [and] not so much with their bowling so for us to beat them we need to control their batting line-up.”That hasn’t been happening as Sri Lanka have taken just six, five and four India wickets in the three losses in this series. Jayawardene acknowledged the need for an improved showing in the final ODI in Pallekele near Kandy.”The bowling obviously didn’t look penetrative enough and obviously not a good fielding performance in the last four games,” Jayawardene said. “I know a couple of guys are really struggling with fatigue. [We will] see what the options are and try and motivate them to go out and take-up the challenge. Kandy is going to be a different challenge altogether. We need to try and put a decent performance together and see where we are at with India because we haven’t played to our potential in this series.”

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has banned Shah Rukh Khan, the Kolkata Knight Riders owner, from entering Wankhede Stadium for five years as a result of his scuffle with security guards after the game between Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians on May 16. The IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla, however, said the ban was not final until the BCCI had its say on the matter.”The MCA managing committee is forced to ban Shah Rukh Khan from entering Wankhede Stadium for a period of five years,” Vilasrao Deshmukh, the MCA president, said in Mumbai. “It was a unanimous decision. It applies to any match whether domestic or international at the Wankhede. We have taken a decision to protect the dignity of our association. BCCI is our parent body and we have written to them informing what had happened. We have no control over BCCI’s decision. We are also an independent body with the Wankhede being our property.”If rules are violated, action will be taken. It does not depend who the individual is. It’s a message to everyone, whosoever he or she may be, that stern action will be taken if there is any misbehavior. How can he go inside the ground without proper accreditation? Even I can’t go inside the ground if not invited for presentation ceremony.”Shukla said only the Indian board could make the final decision. “State bodies can only recommend but a final decision has to be taken by the BCCI. When the matter comes to BCCI, the board will decide [on the ban].”The incident took place after Knight Riders had beaten Mumbai Indians. Shah Rukh was accused of trying to walk on to the field of play after the game and MCA officials lodged a complaint against him the Marine Drive police station. They also said he had been drunk and abused officials.Shah Rukh, however, denied being drunk and said he was reacting to the “obnoxious” and “unpardonable” behaviour of officials at the stadium. He said he had not been present at the match but had gone there after it was over to pick up a large group of his children and their friends. Shah Rukh said he saw security guards manhandling the children and when he objected a group of officials came over and the altercation started.

Middlesex hopes dealt blow by Kent chase

ScorecardMiddlesex’s hopes of qualifying from Clydesdale Bank 40 Group A were dealt a severe blow as Kent chased down 264 under the Canterbury floodlights to win by two wickets with three balls to spare.Dawid Malan scored 107 from 113 balls in Middlesex’s total of 263 all out, but it proved not to be enough as Darren Stevens (65), Azhar Mahmood (49) and Sam Northeast (57) led Kent to victory.Kent cannot qualify for the semi-finals, even as the best second-placed team from the three groups, but Middlesex were in a good position to progress before this defeat. It is still mathematically possible for them to go through, but now unlikely. Their defeat was can largely be traced back to a failure to score enough runs from the last five overs of their innings after Malan had spearheaded a drive to 239 for two from 35 overs. But then, from the first ball of the 36th over, Malan was dismissed and Middlesex could make only another 24 runs as wickets tumbled in dramatic fashion to Pakistan duo Wahab Riaz and Mahmood. Kent, however, knew they still had to bat well and they were given a solid start by Joe Denly and 18-year-old Daniel Bell-Drummond, who put on 51 for the first wicket.Three wickets fell in 13 balls, with Denly perhaps unlucky to be given out lbw for 28, but Stevens then added 90 with Mahmood, who hit 49 from 43 balls with a six and four fours before he was leg-before sweeping at Malan’s leg-breaks.Stevens hit Toby Roland-Jones over extra cover for six and also Malan for a straight six, but when he fell having faced 54 balls for his runs, caught at long on mis-hitting a full toss, it seemed as if Middlesex might be riding the storm.Northeast, though, batted with great composure, despite seeing Geraint Jones go for just five, and in partnerships with Adam Ball and the hard-hitting Riaz he hit 57 from 46 balls to see Kent home. The key moment in an exciting finish when Kent needed 43 from their last five overs was when Northeast was dropped on 48 by Tom Smith on the deep mid-wicket boundary off Tim Murtagh – the ball bouncing out of the fielder’s hands to go for six. Fourteen runs from 11 balls were required when Northeast hit the shot.Northeast was eventually out to the last ball of the 39th over, but by then only four runs were needed and Riaz and James Tredwell made sure of them with no further alarms. In the Middlesex innings Malan added 107 and 109 respectively with Paul Stirling and Neil Dexter for the second and third wickets.Stirling hit five crisp fours in a 41-ball 45 and Middlesex skipper Dexter hit seven boundaries in his 58 from 52 balls. Stirling had the misfortune to be stumped by Jones off a wide from Simon Cook’s first ball, when the seamer was brought on to bowl the 22nd over, and Dexter’s well-paced knock was ended by a fine low catch at long on by substitute fielder Matt Coles.Dexter was part of a remarkable Middlesex middle and lower order slide against Riaz and Mahmood which saw their last eight wickets go down for just 24 runs in 27 balls. From 239 for 2, and starting with Malan’s dismissal to a Riaz inswinging yorker, Middlesex slid to 263 all out – even failing to use up the last three balls of their 40-over allocation. Riaz finished with figures of 5 for 46 and Mahmood ended up with 4 for 52.

Shahid Afridi 'quits' international cricket

Shahid Afridi, Pakistan’s recently axed one-day captain, has announced his “conditional” retirement from the international game, as a mark of protest against the way he has been “humiliated” by the PCB

ESPNcricinfo staff30-May-2011After weeks of growing tension and speculation Shahid Afridi, Pakistan’s recently axed one-day captain, has announced his retirement from the international game. It is, however, a “conditional” retirement in protest against the way he has been “humiliated” by the PCB, a temporary self-imposed exile more than a permanent retirement. Afridi said he was ready to reverse his decision if and when a new board came into power.”There is nothing bigger than a man’s respect, and the way the board has treated me, there is a limit to everything,” an emotional, angry Afridi told from London, where he is currently preparing for a Twenty20 stint with Hampshire. “I will not play under this board. If a different board comes in, I will definitely return but I cannot play under this board. When you have been humiliated like this, by dishonourable people, what is the point in playing on?”The way I’ve been treated… the future doesn’t look too good. I can’t play under a board that doesn’t respect its players. Because of this, under protest, this is a conditional retirement.”Afridi, a Pathan who has lived in Karachi all his life, also hit out at “a Lahore lobby that has been filling the chairman’s ears against me,” reviving an issue of regionalism that has been festering for some time now, and shows few signs of stopping; in recent weeks, Karachi officials have protested loudly against the PCB for not selecting players from the city. The decision caps – for now – a saga that began last December effectively, when the board first began to hesitate in appointing Afridi captain. He was made leader for the New Zealand ODI series and then, only two weeks before the tournament began was he made captain for the World Cup. The impermanent nature of his appointments was one of the reasons for Afridi’s unhappiness.”I wasn’t told anything when I was made captain, I wasn’t given a tenure, I wasn’t told what my squad would be, nothing,” Afridi said. “I took a broken team along with me. When I took over the Pakistan team was in the middle of the spot-fixing crisis. Then the Zulqarnain Haider case happened but my side fought both against England and South Africa in the ODI series. Then we beat New Zealand, we got to the semis of the World Cup and beat West Indies there as well. Maybe I have become a thorn in their throats. It’s better that I step aside for now as I have respect for myself.”But the tipping point came upon Afridi’s arrival back from the Caribbean, growing differences between him and coach Waqar Younis over matters of selection being another concern. Then, he told reporters, “Although the differences in team management are not such which could not be solved, I feel everyone should do his job and need not interfere in other’s work”.That led to the board issuing him a show-cause notice to explain his remarks, unhappy with his penchant for public straight-talking and his cosy relationship with the media; indeed it is understood a major concern of the board was their belief that Afridi was leaking news to the media. Incidentally, Afridi didn’t touch on the selection issue at all when announcing his decision, though he did say that as captain, if he “didn’t speak to the media, who else in the team would?”Soon after his return, the board removed him from the ODI captaincy he picked up in June 2010, not giving any official reason for the removal. “We had very solid reasons to remove Afridi and I will reveal them when the time is right,” PCB chairman Ijaz Butt said recently. “We haven’t taken this action without any reasons.”That prompted Afridi to pull out of the two ODIs against Ireland; speculation was that he was unhappy over his ouster, though he said he had decided to miss the series due to his father’s ill-health. It was around this time that stories began to appear that he may retire soon.Afridi is not new to retirement. He first announced a temporary sabbatical from Test cricket in April 2006, in a bid to concentrate only on ODIs in the lead-up to the 2007 World Cup. He later returned to the side, and even led Pakistan’s Test side at the start of their tumultuous tour of England last summer. He, however, once again retired from the longest format, as soon as Pakistan lost the first Test against Australia at Lord’s.How long the current impasse lasts is difficult to ascertain. Afridi, until the World Cup, was Pakistan’s most effective and successful limited-overs bowler of the last three years. And his public popularity – he remains the most sought-after autograph in Pakistan as well as the only current player brands will invest in – ensures that the pressure on the PCB, and in particular the chairman, will be immense. In any case, Butt’s tenure has been pockmarked by constant instability – nine captaincy changes in Tests and ODIs, five different selection heads and three coaches – and regular spats with senior players: Mohammad Yousuf announced a brief retirement last year and Younis Khan wasn’t chosen for almost a year after the pair were handed open-ended bans last year. Shoaib Malik and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan have also faced one-year bans (eventually overturned), while after the World Cup, Butt had a dig at Abdul Razzaq as well, saying that he should retire now.Afridi will play in the Friends Life t20 for Hampshire, and he will also be available for the inaugural edition of the Sri Lankan Premier League, while continuing to participate in domestic cricket in Pakistan as well.

Wells makes most of final day with ton

Sussex youngster Luke Wells took the opportunity of an County Championship match heading nowhere to score his second century of the season

07-May-2011Sussex 438 and 254 for 6 dec drew with Hampshire 480
ScorecardSussex youngster Luke Wells took the opportunity of an County Championshipmatch heading nowhere to score his second century of the season at the Rose Bowlwhere another easy-paced pitch led to a dramaless last day against Hampshire.Sussex predictably batted through before declaring their second innings 212ahead at 254 for 6, leaving Hampshire no time to respond. The visitors began the day 42 behind after each side had completed their first innings over the first three days and a draw seemed inevitable.Ed Joyce and Chris Nash put on 32 for the first wicket before slow left-armerDanny Briggs took the first of his four wickets. Joyce mistimed a sweep and top edged Briggs to square leg where Friedel de Wet clutched the opportunity.Wells signalled his intentions on arrival with a straight six off Briggs and itbecame clear the match was petering out when Sussex went in at lunch with a leadof 66 at 108 for 1. Briggs, who got through another marathon spell of 30 overs spread across the innings, struck again at 124 when Nash, who had hit six fours in his 56, choppedthe ball onto his stumps.Nash and Wells had put on 92 for the second wicket to make sure there were noalarms and the afternoon session brought little respite for the Hampshirebowlers. Murray Goodwin, the Sussex captain, was the third to go at 157, curiouslyoffering no shot to a delivery from Briggs and being bowled via the top of his pad.Five balls later De Wet struck for the first time when he had Ben Brown caughtat the wicket with the score 158 but there was still no real hope forHampshire. Wells, who made 103 earlier in the season, reached his century off 169 balls, hitting 11 fours in addition to his six.But Wells failed to go on and beat his previous best score because at 248 andhaving faced only another seven balls, Wells drove Sean Ervine to James Vincefor exactly 100.Wells and Luke Wright had put on 90 for the fifth wicket to make the game safeand by then the few spectators were already heading home. Wright perished soon afterwards, edging Briggs to Jimmy Adams after making 39 soon afterwards Goodwin decided to call a halt.Briggs was rewarded with figures of 4 for 99 as the match fell away. Hampshire, still looking for their first Division One win of the season in four attempts, finished with nine points and Sussex took seven back home along the south coast.
