Needs to go: Paul Pogba must be moved on for the greater good

[ad_pod ]

According to The Sun, Manchester United are ready to begin contract talks with Paul Pogba amid interest from Real Madrid, although the midfielder is demanding an eye-watering £500,000-a-week to stay at Old Trafford.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Frenchman returned to Manchester from Juventus in a then world-record deal worth £89m, and was put on wages worth £300,000-a-week which made him the club’s top earner before the arrival of Alexis Sanchez.

The Chile international earns a staggering £505,000-a-week, making him by far and away the Red Devils’ highest earning player.

Pogba’s agent, Mino Raiola, is aware that United are desperate to keep their academy graduate at the club and is reportedly going to push to club all the way when contract negotiations do commence, which may leave the 20-time Premier League champions in a difficult position.

How should United go about this?

Sell him. Plain and simple. The World Cup winner’s demands won’t do anything to help the current salary crisis that the club are going through thanks to Sanchez’s astronomical earnings, which have seen David de Gea and Ander Herrera make extraordinary requests.

It has been reported that Solskjaer is plotting a huge transfer swoop this summer, with Callum Hudson-Odoi, Declan Rice, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Jadon Sancho at the top of his wishlist.

Obviously, these players are going to cost a lot of money. A lot. Chelsea turned down a bid of £35m for Hudson-Odoi back in January, and the player’s stock has certainly increased since then having made his England debut.

Also, the Hammers are reportedly unwilling to sell Rice for less than £100m, whilst Wan-Bissaka is valued at £40m – Sancho should also cost in excess of £100m.

The reported fee that Real Madrid are willing to spend on Pogba is set at £125m, which would go some way to helping United acquire the aforementioned targets.

Additionally, getting him off the wage bill would free up more funds to spend on those targets’ salaries; United must cut their ties with Pogba for the sake of a much needed summer rebuild.

Everton fans react as Tyias Browning’s move to China confirmed

[ad_pod ]

Everton announced on Wednesday that defender Tyias Browning had joined Chinese Super League club Guangzhou Evergrande for an undisclosed fee, and Toffees fans were quick to react to the surprising player update on Twitter.

The 24-year-old only made nine first-team appearances in all competitions for the club whose youth system he came through, with the majority of his other outings coming for the U23s – 116 according to Transfermarkt.

The versatile defender, who has played as a centre-back and right-back throughout his career to date, failed to make much of an impact on Marco Silva this term following his return from a loan spell with Sunderland last season, making the squad in the Premier League on just the one occasion – against Huddersfield Town back in September.

Everton supporters took to social media to have their say on Browning’s surprise switch, and while one said “fair play Marcel” – presumably in relation to Brands managing to get a fee for the Liverpool-born man’s services, another said “£30m I heard”.

The Missing Piece: Why Thomas Meunier would complete Everton’s team

[ad_pod ]

It is no secret that Everton have spent significant amounts of money strengthening their squad over the last couple of transfer windows.

Toffees boss Marco Silva and director of football Marcel Brands have worked tirelessly to bring in big-money signings such as Yerry Mina, Lucas Digne and Richarlison, but all of their investment won’t have the desired effect unless they have balance within the starting XI.

What’s the problem?

Well, the Merseyside-based club don’t have many issues in terms of picking their strongest line-up, if you were to look at the players individually. In Jordan Pickford, Everton have England’s number one and a goalkeeper of real quality, who will only get better.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

Ahead of him, they have an exquisite left-back in Digne who has scored three goals and recorded three assists already this season (via Whoscored), with Mina and Kurt Zouma next to him in defence. The duo of Idrissa Gueye and Andre Gomes make up the centre of midfield, whilst Ademola Lookman, Bernard, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Richarlison can run riot up top.

The real problem in the team comes at right-back, as Goodison Park icon Seamus Coleman, who has been at the club for almost a decade, appears to be declining as a footballer and in need of replacing. The Toffees’ supporters have not been happy on Twitter with how the Irishman has played at times this season, and they could do with a fresh face to replace the 30-year-old.

With that in mind, a move for Paris Saint-Germain’s Thomas Meunier would be ideal.

Why would Meunier fit into Silva’s plans?

The Belgian international is a player of real pedigree and class, playing a key role in his country’s third-place finish at the World Cup last summer with a goal and two assists from right-back, as per FIFA.com.

The 27-year-old is known for his ability to make an impact in the final third, and would mirror the output of Digne over on the other side of defence if he were to arrive at Goodison Park.

Meunier has scored four goals and recorded three assists in all competitions so far this season (via Whoscored), but has had to battle with Thilo Kehrer and Dani Alves for a place in Thomas Tuchel’s team – however he definitely deserves to be starting week in, week out.

Everton took advantage of a similar situation when they signed Digne in the summer, as the Frenchman wasn’t getting much game time at Barcelona despite being a great player, so perhaps they could swoop in and do the same with the Belgian.

Reyna back in USMNT under BerhalterStarted against Germany in friendlyLalas expects more tensionWHAT HAPPENED?

The pair butted heads before and after the 2022 World Cup, with their feud getting personal at one stage as Reyna’s family got involved. Questions were asked of whether the duo could work together again after Berhalter was reappointed as USMNT boss.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT THEY SAID

He has called upon Reyna since picking up the reins and handed him a starting berth in a friendly date with Germany. Lalas has told his podcast of whether an unfortunate saga can be considered closed: “I think Gregg Berhalter kind of put out a fig leaf if you will and said: 'Yeah, not only do I believe in you, but I believe in starting you against Germany’. I think that Gio after that first half doesn't look worse for wear – as a matter of fact I think looks better. And maybe people are even more confident. And I think Gregg kind of gets to assume the position of letting bygones be bygones and going forward.

"Now, don't think for a second that there isn't always going to be baggage and history relative to these two. But what you hope is that it dissipates enough where they can go on and they can function in these types of settings.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Berhalter has been trying to sweep the issue under the carpet, with the United States coach telling reporters when inevitably asked about a supposed divide in the camp: “I know that's going to be on people's mind. What I'd say is that we're moving forward. [I don't] really want to talk too much about the past. I think it's about talking about the future.”

Lembra dele?

Ten times Mourinho slammed Man Utd players this season

The United boss' threat to make a string of changes against Bournemouth is just the latest public jab at his players. Here are 10 memorable examples

Getty Images"Oh my God! They should all explain the lack of attitude!"

After the 2-1 loss at Huddersfield which first cut them significantly adrift of Manchester City in October, Mourinho complained about his players' lack of attitude.

“[Huddersfield] played like I like, and how it has to be. They played with everything: aggression, desire, motivation, sacrifice. They played with everything, and we didn’t.

“They beat us on attitude. When I lose matches I like to lose matches because the opponent was better than us, and had more quality than us. When you lose a football match because of attitude, that’s really bad.

“I heard that Ander Herrera is in the flash interviews and he’s saying that the attitude and the desire was poor. Oh my God! When a player says that, and when a player feels that, I think they should all go to the press conference and explain why because I can’t explain.”

AdvertisementGetty/Goal"He was disappearing"

The writing was on the wall for Henrikh Mkhitaryan at Manchester United after he was left out of a string of fixtures in the autumn. When asked about the Armenian's absence, Mourinho didn't hold back with his assessment.

“I was not happy with his last performances and I am not speaking about one or two, I am speaking about three, four or five. He started the season very well and after that step by step he was disappearing.

"His performance levels in terms of goalscoring, assists, high pressing, recovery of the ball high up the pitch, bringing the team with him as a number 10, were decreasing step by step.

“There came a time when that was enough because the others work to have a chance, everybody works to have a chance, so it’s as simple as that.”Michael Regan"Some players will make childish decisions their whole careers"

United threw away two points in December with the late concession of a goal to Harry Maguire at Leicester City in a 2-2 draw despite having earlier dominated. Maguire's ability to capitalise on the space left by an injured Chris Smalling infuriated Mourinho, who blamed his "childish" players for not reacting.

“I had the chance to speak to Ashley Young and to tell him the way the team had to be in position because of Smalling’s difficulty. But I think [there was] a lack of maturity because I cannot stop the game and give a team talk for the last two minutes. The players have to immediately adapt and to read the game, which they didn’t.

“So we had childish decisions in front of goal, bad decisions. Not just goals we missed, but also easy decisions to make… Some players they have childish decisions and time helps them to have maturity. But some players stay with childish decisions until the end of their careers.”ENJOYED THIS STORY?

Getty Images"Four mistakes after 15 seconds"

It took Christian Eriksen less than 11 seconds to score the opening goal against United in January, and following the eventual 2-0 Tottenham win Mourinho spoke of his fury at the string of mistakes his players made in the build-up to the first goal.

“I don’t think it’s very normal to concede a goal after 15 seconds. After kick-off is ridiculous, especially ridiculous because the players watched it beforehand. We analyse opponents, we work on opponents’ dynamic and routines, the players knew the long ball, they knew Harry Kane, they knew everything.

“And then we don’t press the ball: one mistake. We don’t win the ball in the air: second mistake. We don’t win the second ball on the ground: third mistake. We don’t cover the full-back inside when Eriksen comes: four mistakes. Four mistakes after 15 seconds and you are losing 1-0 against a good team.”

Van Meekeren seals Netherlands sign-off victory

Paul van Meekeren took 4 for 11 as Netherlands ended their World T20 with victory over Ireland in a six-over match

The Report by David Hopps13-Mar-2016
Scorecards and ball-by-ball detailsPaul van Meekeren is ecstatic after dismissing Max Sorensen•ICC/Getty ImagesIreland’s faith in themselves as the leading nation among cricket’s cold-shouldered fraternity was dented when they lost to the Netherlands in Sylhet in the 2014 World Twenty20. Two years on, their sense of well-being has been further eroded in a six-over thrash on a cold and grouchy day in Dharamsala that fell Netherlands’ way by 12 runsThere was snow on the mountain tops in Himachal Pradesh, if the drizzle had cleared the temperatures were plunging and Ireland felt the chill as once they were again tormented by the side in orange.Sainsbury’s supermarket was once forced to ditch its orange branding when the elderly citizens of Frinton-on-Sea, England’s staidest seaside resort, complained it was too garish, and increasingly Ireland will look upon the Netherlands and know how they feel. The orange flash at deep midwicket that sparkled most brightly of all came 14 balls into Ireland’s pursuit of 60 and belonged to Pieter Seelaar as he sprinted along the midwicket boundary before clinging to a slick diving catch. There will be few better in the tournament proper. Paul van Meekeren banged the ball in back of a length, Kevin O’Brien’s pull was middled, but the shot that might have broken the run chase (had it gone for six Ireland would have been 34 for 1 after 14 balls) was instead the harbinger of Ireland’s growing despondency. As for van Meekeren, a return of 4 for 11 will awaken a little interest, one suspects, in English county cricket. By the time he began the final over, Ireland were still 20 short, and he demolished the stumps of Max Sorensen and George Dockrell to ensure there was no monkey business.Whatever occurred, both countries knew at the start of this match that they were already eliminated. There was no mountain left to climb – just the Himalayas to look at as they headed to the airport, but Netherlands headed there much the happier.Twas a game, of sorts, and there was a passion to win it. Only one Ireland player was allowed to bowl two overs and Dockrell’s left-arm spin proved to be a wise choice, registering 3 for 7, and producing catching opportunities from three of his first five balls, two of which were taken. Seven dot balls out of 12, including an over in the Powerplay, was an astounding effort that might have brought victory. The Dharamsala pitch offered up its usual plasticine consistency, but Dockrell found turn all the same as Netherlands’ batsmen floundered against him. Tom Cooper slogged his third ball to mid-on, affording the opportunity to prey upon Roelof van der Merwe who was promoted to No. 3.It did not work out for van der Merwe. Twice, he slogged Dockrell’s left-arm spin to the legside. Kevin O’Brien spilled the first – a slice to long-off and a grimace from O’Brien as he landed heavily, but van der Merwe’s next attempt was entirely bungled and he fell off the cue end at short third man.The coup de grace came in Dockrell’s second over when his turn outdid Wesley Barresi as he came down the pitch, leaving Niall O’Brien with a simple stumping.Memories of Sylhet in 2014 meant that Ireland were particularly wary of Stephan Myburgh. When Netherlands chased down 190 in 13.5 overs in the World T20 two years ago, the muscular Myburgh got 63 – his 50, in 17 balls standing as the equal third fastest in T20Is.On this occasion he was dropped on 9 by Paul Stirling at deep midwicket but was still restricted to 27 from 18 balls before he was run out against the penultimate ball. Dockrell bowled only one ball at him – the first ball of his spell – and got away with a leg bye off his waist.Stirling was quick to address Ireland’s chase. He twice walked across his stumps in Timm van der Gugten’s first over to flick him over fine leg for six. But Seelaar’s thrilling intervention changed the complexion of the game and Stirling fell to the next ball, his ramp shot collected at third man.At 28 for 3 off 2.3, Ireland had opportunity even in a six-over game for a settling period, but their plight worsened when Gary Wilson and Andrew Poynter departed against van der Merwe within three balls – Wilson falling to a reverse sweep, Poynter skying a rustic slog. With 25 needed from two, and only five wickets remaining, Netherlands were suddenly favourites. A fine penultimate over from Mudassar Bukhari meant 20 were needed off the last. They never got close. And that, for Ireland and Netherlands, was that. A dead rubber in a qualifying tournament disrupted by rain and in a state where most attention has been drawn by a grandstanding chief minister, was a cruel end for both sides to their stay in Himachal Pradesh. But they remained as driven as ever by the need to advertise their worth, propelled by an entrenched sense of anger towards a sport that limits their appearances to occasional token appearances and a lack of expansionist philosophy in the higher echelons of the ICC. Even in a match reduced to 72 balls, their passion insisted that they deserve better.
