Australia eye World Cup return for Clarke

Australia have not given up hope of captain Michael Clarke leading them at the World Cup after positive reports from the surgeon who operated on his injured hamstring this week

‘Australia don’t miss Clarke in ODIs’

Australia have not given up hope of captain Michael Clarke leading them at the World Cup after positive reports from the surgeon who operated on his injured hamstring this week.Clarke suffered a serious injury to the tendon component of his right hamstring on the final day of the Adelaide Test and had surgery on Tuesday, and recovery from such an operation can take months. It is still possible that the Test tour of the West Indies in June might be Clarke’s next chance to play international cricket, but the World Cup has not been ruled out.”Our aim is for him to play in the World Cup,” team physio Alex Kountouris said. “That’ll be the goal. He’s had the surgery and he’s going to do the rehab with that intent but we’ll only know that in the coming weeks when we know how he’s recovering and progressing through the rehab.”The rehab is dependent on how he progresses from each stage. There’s different goals and one day post-injury there’s no magic number that ends the rehab. He’ll just have to progress through each stage. Initially it’s going to be nice and easy. Then he’ll start jogging and if he copes with that, he’ll be running faster and he’ll start doing strength work. We’ll know that in the weeks coming.”The reports from the surgeon who operated on Michael Clarke’s injured hamstring this week were positive•Getty Images

Clarke has had trouble with his left hamstring over the past few months but it was his right that forced him from the field in Adelaide. Kountouris said that surgery was decided upon in order to reduce the risk of the injury returning in the future.”Over the last 10 years it’s become apparent the tendons when they become injured, they don’t heal as well and are prone to reccurrence,” he said. “We explored with the surgeon and radiologist, and decided this was the best course of action.”Speaking to the surgeon, everything went really well. He found what he expected to find and there were no surprises. He managed to do a good repair and he’s confident Michael is going to make a good recovery. It’s going to heal and it’s going to minimise risk of reoccurrence, and that’s the goal.”In the immediate aftermath of suffering the injury, Clarke admitted that he might have played for Australia for the last time and he might need to consider his cricket future. However, deciding on surgery was a clear indication that he retained the desire to come back and play for Australia again.Clarke’s injury forced the selectors to consider who would captain the side in the Brisbane Test and they decided on Steven Smith, which indicated a forward-thinking approach. Smith’s official role is now as vice-captain to Clarke in the Test side, and if Clarke returns it will give Smith a chance to serve an apprenticeship before taking on the role full time. While Smith led Australia for the first time on day one against India at the Gabba on Wednesday, Clarke spent much of the day tweeting his thoughts on the match from his bed. “@stevesmith49 doing a very good job,” Clarke tweeted at one point.

Lions crush Express, move into main league

A comprehensive win over Southern Express and Northern Knights’ win over Mumbai Indians lifted Lahore Lions into the main draw of the Champions League T20

The Report by Rachna Shetty16-Sep-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsA comprehensive win over Southern Express and Northern Knights’ win over Mumbai Indians lifted Lahore Lions into the main draw of the Champions League T20. Lions had bettered their chances of qualifying after the big win in the first game of the day but their progress also depended on the result of the game between Knights and Mumbai and the New Zealand team’s six-wicket win smoothed the road for Lions. At the toss, Express captain Jehan Mubarak had said that he had chosen to bowl because he preferred chasing a target with the qualification at stake, and had aimed to restrict Lions to a total in the range of 130-140. Those goals, however, came undone in the last five overs of the Lions innings against an attacking innings from Mohammad Hafeez, who blasted 67 off 40 balls.Lions went into their last five overs on 89 for 3 before Hafeez changed gears. He blasted Seekkuge Prasanna for a four and three successive sixes off the first four balls of the 16th over, which went for 25. The Lions captain followed that up with a few more big hits and brought up the 150 for the side with a six and four off Charith Jayampathi in the 19th over. By the time the innings ended at 164 for 6, 75 had come off the last five overs.Express needed one of their top-order batsmen to replicate the kind of innings Hafeez had played but their challenge began withering away soon, as Aizaz Cheema reduced them to 36 for 3. An already weakened innings stumbled along to an early finish as Express lost four wickets for six runs, including Mubarak who had struck a brisk 35.Cheema, who missed out on a hat-trick for the third successive match in the tournament, finished with 3 for 15 and was well supported by Wahab Riaz and Adnan Rasool as Express folded for 109 in 18 overs.Lions dominated thoroughly with the ball but they lacked fluency in the first half of their batting innings. Until the 15th over, the Express bowlers had done a good job of restraining the batsmen, specially after Farveez Maharoof’s strikes in successive overs.Lions’ opening pair of Umar Siddiq, promoted up the order in place of Nasir Jamshed, and Ahmed Shehzad had made a confident start before Maharoof landed the first breakthrough, enticing a dab from Siddiq that was caught by wicketkeeper Kusal Perera. Maharoof’s next over turned out to be even better with the wickets of Shehzad and Jamshed, both batsmen out to poor shots. The next seven overs saw Lions score just 37 runs as Hafeez and Saad Nasim focused on rebuilding the innings and set up a flourish at the end.

England get their mind right

There was no ticket-tape parade, no open-air bus ride, no ICC mace or MBEs for the victory at the Ageas Bowl but, in years to come, we may just look back on it as the first step in a journey that led to a resurgence in England cricket

George Dobell01-Aug-2014There was no ticket-tape parade, no open-air bus ride, no ICC mace or MBEs for the victory at the Ageas Bowl but, in years to come, we may just look back on it as the first step in a journey that led to a resurgence in England cricket. There is, no doubt, a great deal of room for improvement in the England team. They need to find greater consistency, they need greater contributions from all areas of the side and they will know that, at the Ageas Bowl, had Alastair Cook, Ian Bell, Gary Ballance and Jos Buttler all been dismissed early in their innings – as they so nearly were – the result might well have been different. One good game does not end the legitimate concerns about Cook’s – or Bell’s – form and there will be times, as the likes of Buttler, Moeen Ali and Sam Robson learn their trade at the highest level, when patience is required. But it would be wrong to dismiss England’s success as simply a change of fortune. From the moment Cook won the toss and elected to bat – a weaker captain would have put off his moment of truth and chosen to bowl first – England played positive cricket, with Ballance, Bell and Buttler providing acceleration with the bat; James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes providing probing seam bowling and Moeen effective spin. They deserved their win.It was a change of mindset rather than a change of tactics that was behind this performance. There was a little more belief, a little more intent, a little more enjoyment apparent in this side. While the impact of an energetic new keeper should not be underestimated – however raw Buttler’s keeping, there is nothing more dispiriting for a side than seeing edges dropped and Buttler held on to those offered to him – the key change was instigated by the coach, Peter Moores.Moores is still getting his feet under the desk in his second term as coach. Taking charge of this England team was akin to trying to turn an oil tanker. Defeat and disappointment was becoming so ingrained, that it was always likely to take a while to rediscover the energy and optimism that are the characteristics of the better sides.Moores, recognising this in the run-up to the Test, made a point of talking to several of the senior players and encouraging them to put the pain of Australia behind them and “reconnect” with the methods that first rendered them successful international players.Moores confident over Broad

Moores on Cook:

“As a captain, he had a very good game but also as a player. Interestingly, before the Test match, the tougher it got, the steelier Alastair tends to get. That’s part of his nature. He has worked hard on his game. He said at Lord’s that he felt it was getting better. But to see results on the pitch is really important.”

Moores on Broad:

“We’ve seen through the Test that Stuart has managed it [his knee] really well. It doesn’t mean it has gone away – it hasn’t – but we’ll continue to tackle it. We expect him to be fit for Old Trafford but, like all players, we must see how he reacts to the workload. He had a smaller workload in the second innings here so hopefully that will help.”

Moores on DRS:

“We’ve made our feelings clear. We would like to have DRS. And I think the umpires would say the same. But the lads have just accepted it. Credit to the players who have had some tough decisions: Gary Ballance has scored 200 runs in the game, but had two tough decision. It will be interesting over time whether India start to move with DRS or if it is taken out of their hands.”

Moores on Buttler:

“He had a great start. I enjoyed seeing how relaxed he was out there. The quality of his keeping was high and he obviously fitted in really well. We’re not going to get carried away – we know we have a lot more work to do.”

“When you are with players for a certain period of time, you get to know them a bit better,” Moores said. “One of the things that we were trying to move away from was a mindset that was more defensive, where you are just trying to hold on to things. When you are under pressure, there is always a danger that you are looking to be careful.”We’re trying to look to play cricket where you are on the front foot and you are trying to put people under pressure.”I think Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad were fantastic in this Test. They have reconnected to what the game is about: it’s about getting out there and playing for their country. I think that’s made a big difference. It’s certainly made a big difference to the whole bowling unit. On the last day, it was great to see us come out with the same level of intensity and create some theatre.”We have to find out as a team how we can apply pressure, how we can keep each other going and what makes people tick. When somebody gets a little down, how are we going to make sure we can pick him up?”The dressing room has never been dispirited. And I never expected it to be easy. But provided we have everybody totally committed and driving it forward, we will get to where we want to be.”Whether that last comment was a veiled reference to the decision to “move on” from Kevin Pietersen is open to debate. But Moores did reiterate that the new-look team would take time to build and asked for patience from England supporters who are understandably frustrated at the decline over recent months.”It’s a case of growing and understanding each other as a team,” Moores said. “It doesn’t matter what you do: if you put ten people together, they have got to get to know each other. It is the same as with a cricket team.”We know, because of so much change and so many new players, that we have to work really hard. This series is brilliantly poised but the development of a Test team takes time.We are rebuilding, no doubt, and at times we will get things wrong.”But I’m hoping the public are getting excited about some new faces and the development of a new team. That might mean that results are a bit up and down but, providing they see the right level of commitment and the talent that is coming to fruition, that is where we will try to get to.”

Kamran Akmal, Malik omitted from training camp

Kamran Akmal and Shoaib Malik have been omitted from a pool of 36 probables who will take part in a month-long summer camp at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore starting on May 6. Pakistan’s new selection committee recalled Taufeeq Umar and Yasir Hameed for the camp and the focus is on preparing for upcoming tours and the 2015 World Cup.The camp will be supervised by the coaching staff of the National Cricket Academy, headed by Mohammad Akram, as the PCB is currently hunting for national coaches. Fast bowler Junaid Khan and offspinner Saeed Ajmal will not attend the camp due to their county commitments in England.Pakistan are set to play seven Tests, 13 ODIs and two T20s in the next 10 months. However, with the next international series three months away, the PCB was concerned about the long layoff. The gap was originally seven months, before the PCB managed to strike a deal for a short tour of Sri Lanka in August. Pakistan will then host Australia and New Zealand from October to December in the UAE.”We will have 36 players for the first phase of the training camp,” chief selector Moin Khan said at the National Stadium in Karachi. “The World Cup (2015) is the ultimate goal as we have to prepare for that on a day to day basis. We are planning for the whole year so we need players who can survive with their fitness, as it has been a concern. We have to keep a zero tolerance on fitness.”The notable omissions of wicketkeeper Kamran and allrounder Malik were not surprising, after their dismissal performances in the recent World T20 in Bangladesh. Both were selected for the tournament despite being in ordinary form. Kamran managed only 48 runs in four outings while Malik scored only 52 runs in four innings and wasn’t used as a bowler. Moin, however, said it wasn’t the end of the road for both players.”The recent performances by Shoaib and Kamran were not satisfactory but the doors aren’t shut on them. Given the age factor (as both are 32) we have older players who are fit and performing so there is always a chance for a comeback. They are still in contention and with the upcoming (domestic) season they have to perform well to win back the selectors’ faith.”Taufeeq, 32, had been out of contention since pulling out of the South Africa tour last year due to a leg injury. Among the current lot of Pakistan openers, he has the highest average (38.72) after Saeed Anwar (47.10) and has scored more runs than any other opener since 2001. Hameed, 36, made his debut in 2003 and was a regular member of the team for the next four years. He was dropped, then recalled for the tour of England in 2010 before being ignored again.Openers: Ahmed Shehzad, Nasir Jamshed, Shan Masood, Imran Farhat, Yasir Hameed, Khurram Manzoor, Taufeeq Umar, Sharjeel KhanMiddle order: Misbah-ul-Haq, Asad Shafiq, Younis Khan, Umar Akmal, Azhar Ali, Faisal Iqbal, Sohaib Maqsood, Haris Sohail, Fawad AlamAllrounders: Shahid Afridi, Mohammad Hafeez, Anwar Ali, Bilawal BhattiSpinners: Abdur Rehman, Zulfiqar Babar, Raza Hasan, Atif Maqbool, Yasir ShahFast bowlers: Umar Gul, Mohammad Talha, Ehsan Adil, Mohammad Irfan, Wahab Riaz, Rahat Ali, Sohail Tanvir, Mohammad SamiWicketkeepers: Adnan Akmal, Sarfaraz Ahmed

Cuca mudou no intervalo.

Left-arm pacer Usman Khan’s maiden five-wicket haul in Twenty20 matches, as well as a quickfire fifty from Haris Sohail, helped Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited thump Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited by 78 runs in Lahore and secure the Faysal Bank Department T20 Cup. Usman, who finished with match-winning figures of 5 for 9, also ended the tournament as the leading wicket-taker.Chasing a mammoth 185 in an electrifying atmosphere at the Gaddafi Stadium, SNGPL began their chase poorly, as Usman stunned them with a double strike in the opening over. Mohammad Rizwan was the first to depart after edging behind to the keeper Shakeel Ansar, and two deliveries later, Taufeeq Umar was bowled for a two-ball duck.Faysal Bank T20 Cup honours

Man of the Match – Usman Khan
Best Bowler – Usman Khan (11 wickets)
Best Batsman – Sarfraz Ahmed (250 runs)
Best Allrounder – Zohaib Ahmed (141 runs and 10 wickets)

With the pressure starting to mount on SNGPL, Usman struck again in his second over, dismissing Ali Waqas and Misbah-ul-Haq as the team slumped to 9 for 4- a point of no recovery. The pitch still looked good for runs, however, and Umar Akmal capitalized, smashing 16 runs off Mohammad Khalil in the fourth over, but his 19-run cameo ended when he carved a catch to Usman at third man.Bilalawal Bhatti, who made his Pakistan debut last month, was the only form of resistance for SNGPL. He made 38 off 20 balls with two sixes and five fours, but eventually slashed a top edge back to Ansar in the 12th over. Medium-pacer Imran Khan chipped in with three wickets, as SNGPL were bundled out for 106 in 16.1 overs.Earlier, ZTBL, put in to bat, made a flying start as Imran Nazir and Sharjeel Khan opened the inning with a blitzing 85-run stand, but they were both trapped lbw by Imran Ali in the 10th over. The team’s run rate began to fall as Yasir Hameed and Sohail took some time to settle, but once they found their feet, they anchored the innings with a 54-run third-wicket stand. Hameed was removed for 32, but Sohail added a late surge to the innings. His 32-ball 58 which included five fours and three sixes, eventually helped the team to 184 for 3.

A controlled chase, followed by a merciless onslaught from Andre Russell, helped Jamaica Tallawahs beat Barbados Tridents by seven wickets in the second semi-final of the Caribbean Premier League. They will now play Guyana Amazon Warriors in the final on Saturday.Kumar Sangakkara, playing his first game for Jamaica, anchored the 149-run chase with a measured 50 not out, after the side lost captain Chris Gayle in the fourth over with just 16 runs on the board. The Sri Lanka batsman was involved in two crucial partnerships – the first a 71-run, second-wicket stand with Chadwick Walton, followed by a 30-run stand with Danza Hyatt, where Sangakkara kept pace with the scoring rate, even as his partner struggled to an 18-ball 12.Hyatt brought his labored innings to an end with a heave to long on into the hands of Barbados captain, Kieron Pollard. That brought Andre Russell to the crease. Jamaica needed 32 from 20 and the bowling side had an even chance of winning the game. What followed, however, was pure mayhem from Barbados’ point of view.Sangakkara and Russell needed just 11 balls to race past the target. Russell faced six of those and, in a fearsome batting display, ended up scoring 4, 1, 6, 6, 6, 6 off the six deliveries.Earlier, Barbados, who were put in to bat, put together a challenging total in spite of an indifferent start. David Bernard had Dwayne Smith trapped leg before at the start of the second over and Vernon Philander dismissed Jason Holder, promoted to No. 3, in the next over.Raymon Reifer and Shoaib Malik then added 102 runs for the third wicket, the first hundred-run stand in the CPL. Malik used his feet to play Jamaica’s spinners, stepping down the track to hit two sixes off Muttiah Muralitharan and Nikita Miller early on. Reifer, who had a slow start, gained confidence gradually and began playing his shots. The pair, however, were out off successive deliveries in the 17th over, bowled by Chris Gayle.Kieron Pollard and Azhar Mahmood hit some quick runs towards the end to help Barbados post a challenging total of 148 for 6.

Ansiedade leva a empate
