Everton: Fans react to injury update on duo

Richarlison is ahead of Dominic Calvert-Lewin on the injury comeback trail, Everton manager Rafael Benitez has said.

The England striker hasn’t featured for the Toffees since the 2-0 win at Brighton in August, having sustained a fractured toe (via Transfermarkt). He had scored in all three Premier League matches prior to that injury and bagged eight more than any of his team-mates last season.

Richarlison, meanwhile, has been missing since the 3-1 victory over Burnley on 13 September, when he was on the end of a brutal lunge from James Tarkowski.

How have Everton coped?

Salomon Rondon, a summer signing from Chinese Super League outfit Dalian Professional, has deputised in their absence but is yet to find the net for his new club.

Everton have won only one of their four matches without the duo, and that was against bottom side Norwich City at home. They have suffered defeats against Aston Villa and West Ham United and picked up a point against Manchester United.

As per Liverpool Echo, Benitez said: “I think Richarlison is closer, Dominic will take longer but Richarlison is getting closer.”

Everton fans fret over injury update

Twitter fan feed Toffee TV relayed the manager’s update on the injury-afflicted duo, and here’s what some Everton supporters made of it.

Exclusive: Ex-Leeds ace backs summer signing to become a star

Former Leeds United star David Norris believes that Junior Firpo can develop into a fine player at the club, having been criticised by some fans following his display against Newcastle United last weekend.

The Whites defender joined the club from Barcelona in the summer transfer window, with the club paying £13.5m to secure his signature from the Spanish club.

Firpo has gone on to make four appearances in the Premier League since his arrival from the Liga giants.

The 25-year-old has made three starts in the top-flight, against Everton, Liverpool and Newcastle, and came on as a substitute against Manchester United.

Leeds have yet to win this season, losing to United and Liverpool, and drawing with the Toffees, Burnley, and the Magpies.

Norris is consistent in his belief that Firpo will turn out to be a fine signing for the club, and thinks he has the ability required to become a real star in Yorkshire.

However, he believes that, at this point, he is still adapting to the system at the club.

He said: “From the bits I’ve seen from him, I think he’s capable. He looks like he could be a good player and turn out to be a good signing, obviously he’s not really got going yet.

“He’s not one I would write off yet, I like the little bits I have seen and I think he’s capable of being a good signing still. He just needs a little bit more game time.”

Liverpool linked with move for Pedri

The summer transfer window may only have closed just over a week ago, but Liverpool are already being linked with a host of exciting players.

What’s the story?

According to Spanish reporter Eduardo Inda (as relayed by the Anfield Edition), the Reds are keen to secure the 18-year-old wonderkid’s services after failing to replace Gini Wijnaldum.

They tweeted: “Liverpool are interested in signing Barcelona midfielder Pedri next summer, with Jurgen Klopp ‘in love’ with the 18-year-old. The club are willing to pay €100m (£86m) for his services, which would smash the club’s previous transfer record.”

Liverpool fans will be buzzing

The teenage prodigy joined Barca in an £18m move back in 2019 but stayed on at his boyhood club Las Palmas for another season.

After joining up with Ronaldo Koeman’s men 12 months ago, Pedri has instantly established himself as one of the club’s star performers.

Despite his tender years, the Spain international made an astonishing 52 appearances in all competitions for the Camp Nou outfit last season, bagging four goals and providing six assists along the way.

His impressive displays earned him a spot in Luis Enriques’s 24-man squad for Euro 2020, and his outstanding performances on the international stage draw praise from former Juventus, Real Madrid and England boss Fabio Capello.

“I am very happy for him (Enrique),” he told Spanish outlet Marca (as relayed by the Daily Mail). “Spain have played very, very well, and overall, he has realised the base for the next tournaments.””He has built a very young national team with a big future, where, for certain, includes the revelation of the tournament: Pedri. He is simply a spectacular footballer.”Therefore, Liverpool supporters will surely be buzzing to learn of their club’s reported interest in the technically gifted midfielder.

Klopp and his coaching staff are thought to be hopeful that the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and Harvey Elliott can step up this season in Wijnaldum’s absence, although only time will tell if they prove to be capable of doing just that.

Pedri, on the other hand, has showcased truly world-class potential in his short professional career, and the Liverpool manager and fans alike would undoubtedly welcome his arrival with open arms.

Pearce expects Phillips to leave Liverpool

Liverpool centre-back Nat Phillips is still expected to leave Anfield in the summer transfer window, according to The Athletic’s James Pearce.

The Lowdown: Phillips down the pecking order

Phillips did an admirable job at an extremely difficult time last season – Jamie Redknapp hailed him as ‘unbelievable’ following his performance against Burnley in May – filling in when the Reds were without the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip through long-term injuries.

They are all fit again, however, and Ibrahima Konate has joined from RB Leipzig, so the 24-year-old is now arguably fifth-choice centre-back at Anfield.

Phillips has been linked with a summer exit, with West Ham and Bayer Leverkusen reportedly among those keen on signing him.

The Latest: Pearce tips defender to leave

Speaking in a Q&A for The Athletic after Liverpool’s win at Norwich City on Saturday, Pearce gave his thoughts on Phillips’ Reds future.

He outlined: “Still no suitable offers on the table. I’m still expecting him to leave before the window shuts.”

The Verdict: No Liverpool future

It is hard to see Phillips enjoying much playing time for Liverpool this season, unless another injury crisis occurs at the back.

While he did excellently in 2020/21, making 15 Premier League starts, he has his limitations and probably isn’t good enough to be a long-term squad player at Anfield. On the ball, he doesn’t have the quality and vision of Van Dijk, Gomez and Matip, and his lack of pace means that Liverpool can’t play with their usual high line.

Therefore, it would come as no surprise if the club accept an offer for him this month, particularly with Klopp’s centre-back options now nicely replenished.

Pietersen leads the way in opening victory

Kevin Pietersen is having quite an impact as England captain. He did more than most to help his team take a series lead against South Africa with a 20-run victory at Headingley

Kevin Pietersen is having quite an impact as England captain. If it wasn’t enough winning his first Test and persuading Steve Harmison out of one-day retirement, he then did more than most to help his team take a series lead against South Africa with a 20-run victory at Headingley. He hit an unbeaten 90 off 82 balls, adding 158 in 21 overs with Andrew Flintoff, then claimed two crucial wickets as the visitors threatened to pull away in the run chase.England’s latest attempt to form a winning one-day unit comes with Pietersen’s stamp of aggression, hence the trend towards pace bowling and hard-hitting, free-scoring batsmen. For two thirds of their innings, though, little appeared to have changed as just five fours a six came in 34 overs – all from Matt Prior’s bat. However, England banked on having a middle-order filled with strikers and in Pietersen and Flintoff, they possess two of the most destructive one-day batsmen around. The pair crunched 94 off the last 10 overs, showing what can be achieved with wickets in hand, as South Africa’s bowling became ragged and the fielding was poor.In contrast to England’s sedate approach, South Africa went hard at the start of their chase and put themselves ahead of the rate, reaching 139 for 2 after 25 overs. However, everything changed when Pietersen surprisingly brought himself onto bowl. By the end of the innings he’d doubled his one-day wicket tally after getting AB de Villiers caught at midwicket and benefiting from a swift piece of glovework from Prior to stump Mark Boucher. It wasn’t just with the ball that Pietersen shone during the second innings, his captaincy had a touch of the magic about it, too. In the eighth over, Pietersen turned to Harmison and it took him less than an over to strike when he hit the perfect line to take Smith’s outside edge with his fourth delivery. Flintoff wasn’t quite the metronome he can be and was picked off by Jacques Kallis, but then Pietersen dipped into his captain’s handbook and pulled out another trick.Holding back the final Powerplay, he brought Samit Patel into the attack with his left-arm spin and it proved a master stroke. Patel’s fourth ball was quicker and flatter, beating Gibbs as he lent back to cut. Patel’s first ODI wicket was Neil McCallum, against Scotland last week, but with all due respect to the Scots this one will have meant a little more. However, Kallis and de Villiers moved along comfortably in their third-wicket stand of 49 in 11 overs. Then de Villiers flicked lazily to Ian Bell and, shortly after reaching fifty off 63 balls, Kallis, struggling with a leg problem, was run out by some quick thinking by Bell. Boucher showed in the Test series, at Edgbaston, that he is ideal in a run chase but his opposite number, Prior, was very alert to a raised foot.JP Duminy had the skill to guide South Africa home, but Harmison came back to find a thin outside and Johan Botha holed out at deep midwicket. The lower order, without the injured Albie Morkel, didn’t have the power to keep up and Flintoff just had time to remind everyone that he’s meant to be the main allrounder in the team.England’s success showed that there is more than one way to play one-day cricket, especially in their conditions, even though the new-look top three seemed to drift as more than half the innings came and went. Bell, after batting through 19 overs, and Prior after 42 off 52 balls both picked out backward point off Kallis and Owais Shah top-edged to deep square-leg.Flintoff ignited the innings when he found the boundary in the 35th over, the first man other than Prior to locate the rope, and initially Pietersen was happy to feed him the strike. The change of ball at the 34-over mark helped England, the harder one making it easier to use the pace of South Africa’s attack. Flintoff opened his front leg to hit strongly through the off side, and also rifled the ball with the straight power that typifies his batting when he’s at his best. He reached fifty off 52 deliveries, his first half-century since the unbeaten 72 he made against New Zealand, at Hobart, in January 2007 and, when he was bowled moving across his stumps to Dale Steyn, his 78 was his highest ODI innings since making 87 against Australia, at Lord’s, in 2005.Pietersen was fortunate to survive an lbw shout off Botha on 18, and was close to being run out on 22 when he dived for the crease, the third umpire ruling the bat had just been grounded before it then bounced up as the stumps were broken. He eventually earned his first boundary off his 52nd delivery, but had a clear mindset on what he wanted to achieve, and then began to invent as he went to a fifty from 55 balls. He timed his charge and took 10 off two balls from Steyn in the 46th over, including the second six of the innings over midwicket. What Pietersen is quickly realising is that his job now doesn’t stop with the bat and his role in the field is just as important. It’s a learning experience and he’s learning fast. At some point life will get tougher for him, but today wasn’t that moment.

High winds lead to farcical finish

ScorecardA full house at Canterbury was left far from impressed as cricket’s regulations once again contrived to scupper a well-balanced contest. High winds prevented the floodlights being raised which meant the match was abandoned six overs into Leicestershire’s run chase. The match was always likely to end this way as the winds were gusting well above the permitted 28mph limit from before the start of play. There was nothing in the playing conditions to allow for a shortened match so the umpires, Ian Gould and Richard Illingworth, had no option but to start a 40-over match at the scheduled time.Kent’s innings was completed without any problems, but already the light was fading. After a full-length interval the Leicestershire openers came out at dusk and were already having problems picking up the ball. The aim had been to try and reach the 10-over mark, where Duckworth-Lewis would have allowed a result. If Leicestershire had been no wickets down their target was 38, but they lost two scalps within six overs and would have needed to be 58 after 10 overs. Captain Paul Nixon came out at No. 4 and was quickly motioning that he couldn’t see. He was late on a slower-ball from Azhar Mahmood and the umpires came together. Nixon and Robert Key shared wry grins – both captains knew this had been coming for a long time.In the end one point each was a fair result for the teams, but it was a far from satisfactory evening for the game. Kent offered to refund spectators, while both sides were left calling for some reworking of the playing conditions to allow for common sense if such conditions occur again.

Tomiyasu talks ongoing with Spurs agreement reached

According to Calciomercato.it, Lilywhites target Takehiro Tomiyasu ‘wants’ to join Tottenham and an agreement has already been reached with Bologna for a ‘maximum of €20 million (£16.9m)’ – but there’s one last hurdle.

The Lowdown: Spurs in Tomiyasu talks…

Spurs managing director Fabio Paratici has had his eye on Tomiyasu for quite some time now with talks dating back to the beginning of last month.

Tottenham originally had a £12.9m (€15m) bid, plus an extra £2.6m (€3m) in add-ons, rejected by Bologna according to Sky Sports, but The Athletic then brought an update stating that a move was being finalised.

Updates went quiet on Tomiyasu just before and during the Olympic games, with reliable reporter Alasdair Gold revealing that sources on the player’s side were ‘confident’ a deal would still be done after he returned.

The Latest: Tomiyasu back on the cards?

Calciomercato.it have provided a fresh update on the saga from Italy, and they believe a Spurs agreement is already in place with Bologna to the tune of £16.9m.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-gossip/” title=”Tottenham latest gossip!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

They add that Tomiyasu ‘wants Tottenham’ and intermediaries are currently working to overcome the ‘latest obstacle’ preventing his arrival at N17.

This last hurdle in the deal, with talks having been ‘non-stop’ as they put it, concerns the ‘terms of payment’ – but intermediaries are apparently at work behind the scenes to resolve this issue.

The Verdict: Get it done…

For what should be one of their more fairly straightforward transfers of the window, Tottenham have certainly taken their sweet time in securing a deal for the Japan international.

As such, we believe he should still be brought to north London as a versatile ace who can solve two problems at once for new boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

The 22-year-old can be slotted in at both right-back and centre-back and finished the 2020/2021 Serie A campaign as one of Bologna’s most consistent defenders.

According to WhoScored, he averaged the joint-most clearances per 90 (3.3) out of the entire squad and joint-second most tackles in that time (1.5).

Still young and with plenty of years ahead of him, a £16.9m fee is totally worth it for a versatile and promising talent.

Pakistan fast bowler Sohail Tanvir was the Indian Premier League’s (IPL’s) most successful bowler but he has said that it is in the Test arena that he really wants to prove himself.”If you are ranked as a player, it is solely based on your performance in Tests,” Tanvir told . “The one-day and Twenty20 versions are meant to entertain the crowds who come to watch sixes, boundaries, catches and wickets. I am comfortable in all forms of the game, but it is Test cricket that I would love to prove myself now.”Tanvir has played only two Tests so far in his career, making his debut on Pakistan’s tour of India in 2007-08. He had tremendous success with the Rajasthan Royals, who bought him for $100,000, during the IPL. He took 22 wickets in 11 games at an average of 12.09 and economy-rate of 6.46 and held his nerve during the IPL final against Chennai Superkings to score the winning runs off the final ball.”I know I am worth much more,” he said. “And based on my performances, I think I can easily get a million dollars, if not more. I have two or three very lucrative offers from other IPL franchises, but there is time for me to make a decision for next year.”
