It was a good evening at the office for West Ham at St. Mary’s Stadium against Southampton.

The Hammers won 1-0 against Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team thanks to a goal from Sebastien Haller. It ends an eight-game goal drought in the Premier League for the former Eintracht Frankfurt man, and it was a well-taken strike as well. Manuel Pellegrini will be delighted with his performance, and he will be happy that his side won, although it was just their second victory in their last 12 matches.

The club’s supporters were delighted with the 25-year-old’s display, and they took to Twitter to share their thoughts.

Indeed, it was a brilliant display. He managed a SofaScore rating of 8.2, and won 10 of the 19 aerial battles he took part in against Southampton, whilst he also completed all three dribbles.

Many supporters were sure that was down to one reason – him playing up front alongside Michail Antonio.

It certainly did look like a good partnership – Antonio himself won the Man of the Match award – and it could be the start of something special. As long as Pellegrini chooses to go with this partnership, of course.

It remains to be seen whether the Hammers can now build on this display.

Former Sunderland player Stephen Elliott has discussed the club’s current predicament and has pointed the finger of blame at one individual.

What did he say?

Given the Black Cats’ current plight it would be fair to examine the several areas of the club that are failing, from the players to the manager to the board.

Elliott, however, seems to think Stewart Donald is mostly responsible for the current situation, and given he only recently decided to change the manager, that is a fair assessment.

The former striker suggested the owner has made numerous risks which haven’t paid off, and now the club is struggling as a result on and off the field, with negative results and declining attendances – just 26,358 watched the defeat to Burton on Tuesday.

Chance to reconcile mistakes?

Donald’s popularity with fans seems to be on a permanent decline and despite getting rid of the much-maligned Jack Ross things still haven’t taken a turn for the better.

On paper, the experience and know-how of Phil Parkinson seemed like it would be a good fit to rally the club and get everyone looking upwards, but his tenure simply hasn’t worked out.

He is on a six-match winless run with his only wins coming against Tranmere and Southend, teams which lie 20th and 23rd in the table respectively.

Sacking Parkinson would appease fans and giving a new boss, such as the popular Kevin Phillips, money for transfers, could see fan opinion sway back in the owner’s favour.

Whether he has the financial power to make that happen is another question, but one thing is for certain, and that is that he faces the prospect of things getting worse if the current situation prevails.

More fans could be turned away and the appeal for players to join could decrease significantly – making the prospect of getting out of League One all the more difficult.

Wolverhampton Wanderers may be on track to find the next Morgan Gibbs-White as one of their promising young midfielders has been impressing out on loan this season.

Club owners Fosun would be delighted if such a statement could become a reality as they have heavily invested in the academy set up in pursuit of achieving their long-term ambition to build from within.

Gibbs-White is the only player amongst the first-team fold to fully come from Wolves’ youth system, having made 64 appearances since his debut in January 2017.

But that could change in the near future.

Ryan Giles has been at League One outfit Shrewsbury Town this season, gaining valuable experience and learning the trade under former Wolves captain Sam Ricketts – who better?

The 19-year-old actually made his debut against the Salop when the two teams met in the FA Cup in January this year, and his performances at New Meadow have earned him recent call-ups to the England U20 squad.

The fact he’s managed that achievement despite playing at a lower level tells you all you need to know about his glowing abilities.

Often loan players are handed a ridiculous squad number at their temporary club as if it were a sign that they weren’t actually one of their own, but that’s different to Giles as he’s clinched the number 11 shirt at Shrewsbury.

Comparisons can be made to Gibbs-White despite playing relatively different roles as Giles is described as a ‘lightning-quick’ orthodox winger, which is similar to the man he’s only one day older than as the Wolves first-teamer has a ‘good turn of pace and balance.’

Primarily a central midfielder, Gibbs-White has sometimes been called upon to play in a front-three out wide when Nuno Santo elects for a 3-4-3 system, so the two are more comparable than you may think.

Giles is only going from strength to strength on loan, so he seems the most viable option to make a transition into the senior setup ahead of next season, especially as he has been named in such squads in the past.

He is also benefitting from Shrewsbury’s system being ever so similar to Wolves’, he said: “Shrewsbury play the exact same formation as Wolves, it’s mirrored. It’s good because I’m not going away, playing a different position, and coming back to Wolves, having not played the role for a year.”

While Ricketts is clearly proving to be a significant influence on his early career, which will only bear fruit for the Premier League club in the future. On the ex-Wolves man’s impact, Giles added: “He’s brilliant. He’s a fantastic football coach and a role model off the pitch. He’s had a lot of experience throughout his career and can give advice.”

If Fosun want that goal of theirs put in motion, then starting off with this 19-year-old can do no harm, especially as he carries much of the early career prospects that Gibbs-White once had.

QPR missed out on the chance to jump into 2nd place in the Championship table on Monday evening, as they suffered a 3-1 defeat to west London rivals Brentford at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium.

Mark Warburton’s men conceded their 24th, 25th and 26th goals of the league campaign after succumbing to the brilliance of Ollie Watkins and Said Benrahma – only Barnsley, sat at the bottom of the Championship, have conceded more goals than the R’s with 27 concessions.

Before the match, we outlined how QPR must focus their defensive efforts on the aforementioned duo of Watkins and Benrahma, and it’s safe to say that the R’s simply couldn’t cope with the pair.

How did they perform?

In a word, fantastically.

From the first whistle, the pair set the intensity of the game with attacking directness and inventiveness.

Both forwards had four shots each – more than any other player on the pitch managed – with Watkins getting all of his attempts on target whilst Benrahma had three of his four do the same.

23-year-old Watkins scored twice, firstly opening the scoring with a diving header before putting the icing on the cake with a tap in, whereas Benrahma netted a penalty in between Watkins’ two strikes.

Additionally, the pair of them had 85 touches of the ball on an evening where everything Brentford did going forward went through them.

Simply couldn’t cope

It seemed as if Warburton did actually try to nullify Benrahma’s threat but putting Eberechi Eze on the right flank for only the second time this season, with the QPR boss seemingly wanting some physicality out there to help 37-year-old Angel Rangel deal with the Algerian.

Despite that tactical move, Benrahma still had a fun evening, as did Watkins with two goals to his name. Benrahma showed good feet in the first half to help contribute to the opening goal, while one moment in which he nut-megged Toni Leistner summed up just how much QPR were struggling to deal with him.

In total, Benrahma was fouled three times and also made a key pass to go with his four shots, whereas Watkins also made a key pass to go with his two goals – the pair were inexplicably allowed to run riot by QPR, and Warburton’s side paid the price.

Jose Mourinho has reportedly been contacted by Tottenham over the possibility of him replacing Mauricio Pochettino if the Argentine leaves, and it has generated quite a mixed reaction from Spurs fans on Twitter.

Many don’t believe the report from Soccerlink, but it has sparked discussion nonetheless, with some members of the fanbase having polar opposite viewpoints.

Some of those who are opposed to the idea of him taking over from the Argentine point to his failure at Manchester United, where he not only underachieved but played largely negative football and created a negative atmosphere.

With Spurs in a similar position of unrest, with several players allegedly unhappy with the situation they find themselves in, appointing Mourinho may not be the best option.

The 56-year-old famously fell out with those above him at Real Madrid and twice at Chelsea, but some Tottenham supporters are choosing to look past that because of the success he brings, and the trophies he wins.

Despite the joy Pochettino has had in north London he has still failed to pick up a piece of silverware, and some fans are keen to see that change, believing the arrival of Mourinho would help.

Here are some of the varying responses to the prospect of the Portuguese boss becoming manager at the Tottenham Stadium.

And just like that, Real Madrid are seemingly out of their early crisis and heading towards the top.

In fact, at this particular point in time, Los Blancos are finally first in the La Liga table, leaving the likes of Barcelona and Atletico Madrid behind them in the dust.

Of course, these are still early days and the table is bound to go through various changes before the end of the campaign. But it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Zinedine Zidane is finally getting his whole squad on the same page.

The latest clash with Osasuna, which ended in a 2-0 victory for the Galacticos, proved as much.

But it proved one other thing as well – the future looks bright and a touvh Brazilian.

Both Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo found their names on the scoresheet on Wednesday night at the Santiago Bernabeu as the Whites cruised to a rather comfortable and impressive victory over Osasuna.

Seeing how both players are still very young, Vinicius being 19 and Rodrygo 18 years of age respectively, this was definitely a great sign for all Madridistas.

Two of their young talents stepped up in the absence of the more experienced veterans who were being rested, with the likes of Gareth Bale out of the squad and Karim Benzema on the bench, and completely stole the show in front of the home crowd.

Needless to say, that’s exactly what every manager wants to see.

Of course, it has to be noted, however, that this was indeed Rodrygo’s debut in the 2019/20 La Liga campaign and he only got to play for 20 minutes, coming off the bench in the 70th minute.

Vinicius, on the other hand, has been struggling to regain his best form ever since his injury last season. Since then, he’s been in and out of the team and delivering on a very inconsistent basis.

Both players will, therefore, need some time to get back into the groove and find their footing but there’s still no escaping the feeling that their potential, should it be reached here at the Spanish capital, is enormous.

Zidane has two extraordinary talents in his squad and even though they may not be among the best at this very moment, the early signs are pointing towards that happening in the not so distant future.

And that is a beautiful thing for Real Madrid and the revolution the media has been calling for throughout the whole summer.

Following Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp had some positive words for Magpies forward Joelinton.

Indeed, in quotes carried by The Chronicle, Klopp said that the striker was “outstanding” at Anfield and is “100% made for the Premier League”.

The 23-year-old has scored once in five Premier League appearances for Steve Bruce’s side in the early stages of the 2019/20 campaign.

And a number of Newcastle fans have been on social media discussing the Brazilian.

There are those who feel that Joelinton will prove a success at the club – ultimately scoring the goals to keep the team in the Premier League.

That said, there are also plenty of Newcastle supporters who feel that the South American is not the answer to the club’s goalscoring problems.

It will certainly be interesting to see how many times Joelinton manages to find the net between now and the end of the campaign.
