Everton defender Djibril Sidibe has a golden opportunity amid Coleman suspension

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Seamus Coleman was sent off for a second yellow card on the 56th minute against Burnley last weekend, which forced Marco Silva to bring on back-up right-back Djibril Sidibe during the second half.

The Frenchman joined Everton this summer on a season-long loan from AS Monaco but has had to settle for a place on the bench so far, other than two Carabao Cup fixtures where he started.

Upon entering the fray for his first-ever Premier League outing, Sidibe was also booked towards the end of the match. However, with Coleman suspended, now is his time to show Silva that he is the main man for the Toffees at right-back.

In Ligue 1 last season, Sidibe provided two assists in 27 appearances – the same amount as the Irishman in the Premier League – and after averaging 3.3 tackles per game in the Champions League, the 27-year-old could prove to be a positive addition both defensively and creativity.

As Coleman’s dismissal came in the form of two yellow cards, the Everton regular will miss just the one game against West Ham United, which further justifies the importance for Sidibe in that game. It may be a one-shot take for the former Lille defender, and should he impress, a spot as the Toffees’ main right-back may well be on the cards.

This is because Coleman’s form has indeed been questionable so far, being part of a defence that has conceded 13 goals in eight games. However, the 30-year-old does have the one assist to his name and has averaged 3.3 dribbles each match thus far. Although, his topsy-turvy start may allow Sidibe to take his spot in the side should the Frenchman stand out against West Ham.

The last time the Monaco loanee started for his new team, he achieved a 7/10 rating for his display against Sheffield Wednesday, which may have already given Silva some food for thought in the full-back slot. With a solid performance against West Ham, Coleman may find himself missing even more action, and quite frankly, he couldn’t have chosen a much worse time to get himself a suspension as now Sidibe has a golden opportunity to snatch his place.

Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk shows an impeccable attitude on Instagram

The centre-back was very straightforward with the caption. He didn’t dwell on the Dutch team’s performance as he simply stated ‘Job done’ before moving on to talk about the upcoming games for Liverpool.

This is exactly the type of mindset Jurgen Klopp needs from his star man if Liverpool are to win the Premier League this year, and luckily, it seems as if van Dijk has the perfect attitude.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp must avoid temptation to experiment

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

As quoted by The Liverpool Echo, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted he got his team selection and tactics wrong for the win over Newcastle on Saturday.

What did he say?

The German sprung a surprise in his selection by choosing Divock Origi ahead of Roberto Firmino, and then using Sadio Mane as the central striker.

Origi’s injury forced him off before half-time, and Firmino’s introduction turned the game in the Reds’ favour. Speaking after the game, Klopp revealed the Brazilian’s “creative edge” made all the difference, and acknowledged his mistake.

Watch Liverpool Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

He said: “It is significant he (Firmino) provided a creative edge when he came on. It was my idea to start with Sadio in the centre. That didn’t work really well. It has done in the past but today against such a deep defending side, it was a bit different. That’s why we changed it already in the game (before Origi’s injury). Then Bobby came on in his natural position. Sadio really flexible in that space, Mo really strong in one-on-ones all day.

“When we use Mo more often for balls in his feet and one-twos in and around the box we were really in charge of the game. We won a lot of second balls and there weren’t as many counter-attacks. It was then a really good game.”

Unnecessary experimentation

Whilst winning the Champions League again would be a remarkable achievement, surely ending the club’s long wait for the Premier League title is the priority this season? It is that debate that makes the decision to drop Firmino to the bench all the more baffling. Surely the Reds would be better off picking their strongest line-up in the league, and then rotating for European games? Especially when outside of Napoli, one would expect them to coast through a relatively easy group.

If Klopp has any plans of overhauling Manchester City this year, they simply cannot afford any slip-ups. Origi may forever be etched into Anfield folklore for his exploits last season, but he is a serious downgrade on Firmino. The Reds looked a shadow of their real selves when the Belgian was playing against the Magpies, and so Liverpool must be far smarter in deciding which competitions they look to rotate for.

De Gea, Salah & De Bruyne in as five Man City players make PFA Premier League Team of the Year

The newly-crowned league champions are the main force in the best XI this season, with Tottenham Hotspur well represented as well

Few people will be surprised to see Manchester City dominate the PFA Premier League Team of the Year by having five players named.

Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva, Sergio Aguero, Nicolas Otamendi and Kyle Walker are the five newly-crowned English champions included in the XI due to their impressive performances for a side sitting 16 points clear at the top of the table with four games to go.

Despite Pep Guardiola's team's dominance of the league, there are more star-studded names throughout the squad.

Tottenham Hotspur are the next best represented side as star striker Harry Kane takes the centre-forward role, with Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen also included.

Although still sitting second and third in the league, Manchester United and Liverpool only have one star each in the squad, with David de Gea taking his place between the posts and 30-goal hero and PFA Player of the Year Mohamed Salah adding to a mouth-watering attack.

Amid their poor title defence, Chelsea also saw one player named in the side, with Marcos Alonso earning praise for his impressive work on the left side.

PCB introduces new domestic one-day competition

The PCB has introduced a revamped domestic one-day tournament, called the Pakistan Cup, to replace the existing Pentangular Cup. The tournament will be played between five provincial teams, starting April 19 in Faisalabad. The format will remain the same as the Pentangular Cup, but the process of picking players has been altered – the traditional selection process has been replaced with a draft system. It will allow a pre-announced captain and coaches to pick their 15-man squads from a list of 150 cricketers in 15 rounds. There was no reason given for the selection process being changed. The five teams from the five provinces – Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and a team from Federal Capital of Pakistan – will remain the same. The PCB announced Azhar Ali will lead Balochistan, Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq will lead Federal Capital, Younis Khan will take the reins of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Shoaib Malik will captain Punjab and Sarfraz Ahmed will lead Sindh. The draft took place in Lahore, where Punjab picked Salman Butt as their opening batsman while Sindh went for Mohammad Amir. Mohammad Asif, however, was not picked by any of the five teams. Mohammad Hafeez, who is suffering from a knee injury, remained unavailable for selection. In order to promote young cricketers, each team had to pick one regional Under-19 player in their 15-man squad. The Pakistan domestic structure has been inconsistent for decades with changes occurring every two years. Their domestic season starts in August with Grade-2 tournaments, and ends with the limited-overs tournaments by March. The PCB had introduced a completely new first-class system in 2015 and the announcement of the Pakistan Cup reflects the varying nature of planning in the domestic set up. It was understood that there were commercial reasons behind the timing of the event.”Our public loves cricket and we are trying to further elevate our product,” Najam Sethi, the chairman of the PCB executive committee, said. “There is greater involvement of senior cricketers with the draft process in place. Players will also receive a 100% increase in remuneration and the support staff is very experienced. We are celebrating unity in diversity and I urge the fans to come and watch these matches in the stadium.”Punjab: Salman Butt, Shan Masood, Asad Shafiq, Asif Ali, Akbar-ur-Rehman, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Saad Nasim, Amir Yameen, Shoaib Malik (capt), Ehsan Adil, Amad Butt, Adnan Ghaus, Zulfiqar Babar, Saif BadarSindh: Khurram Manzoor, Sami Aslam, Mohammad Waqas, Shoaib Maqsood, Khalid Latif, Fawad Alam, Saad Ali, Sarfraz Ahmed (capt), Imad Wasim, Anwar Ali, Bilal Asif, Mohammad Amir, Sohail Khan, Ruman Raeez, Hassan KhanBalochistan: Azhar Ali (capt), Owais Zia, Ramiz Raja (junior), Babar Azam, Umar Akmal, Shahid Yousaf, Mohammad Hasan, Mohammad Nawaz, Sohail Tanvir, Junaid Khan, Bilawal Bhatti, Umar Gul, Imran Khan, Osama Mir, Saeed AjmalFederal: Sharjeel Khan, Nasir Jamshed, Iftikhar Ahmed, Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), Asif Zakir, Hammad Azam, Sarmad Bhatti, Arsal Sheikh, Imran Khalid, Zafar Gohar, Mohammad Sami, Mohammad Irfan, Hasan Ali, Mohammad AbbasKPK: Ahmed Shahzad, Fakhar Zaman, Younis Khan (capt), Rameez Aziz, Naveed Yasin, Musadiq Ahmed, Bismillah Khan, Faheem Ashraf, Rahat Ali, Azarullah, Sadaif Mehdi, Yasir Shah, Mohammad Asghar, Zohaib Khan, Hayatullah

Tuskers, Eagles to clash in final

A round-up of the Pro50 Championship matches played on March 17, 2015

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Mar-2015Mid West Rhinos survived a middle-order stumble to beat Mountaineers by three wickets, denying the latter a spot in the final of the Pro50 Championship. Mountaineers, who were two points adrift of Mashonaland Eagles, needed a win over Rhinos and a Matabeleland Tuskers’ victory over Eagles to climb into second and a place in the final, but a loss ended their run. Tuskers and Eagles will now clash in the Pro50 final despite the latter’s 74-run loss on Tuesday.Rhinos had Mountaineers under pressure right from the start of the game as their pacers Michael Chinouya and Tendai Chisoro reduced Mountaineers to 83 for 7. From 102 for 8, Mountaineers managed to post 211 only through the 109-run partnership between Innocent Kaia and No. 10 batsman Tapiwa Mufudza. Kaia took on the scoring responsibilities, and brought up his maiden List A hundred, finishing with 101 off 144 deliveries with 12 fours and a six.The foundation for Rhinos’ 212-run chase was set up by the top order, with knocks from Bradley Wadlan (50) and Prince Masvaure leading the way. Three quick strikes by legspinner Natsai M’shangwe saw them stumble from 147 for 2 to 189 for 6 but Masvaure’s unbeaten 68 held the innings together and they achieved the target in the 36th over.Brian Chari’s 125-ball 115 and three wickets each from Brian Vitori and John Nyumbu were the stand-out performances in Tuskers’ 74-run win against Eagles.Chari’s 115, his maiden List A hundred, helped Tuskers post an imposing 279 for 5. Chari’s 137-run second-wicket stand with Nkosana Mpofu (50) set the base for Tuskers’ innings and they were given a boost by Luke Jongwe’s unbeaten 20-ball 37. In reply, Eagles kept losing wickets at regular intervals and had lost half their side by the 32nd over for 132 runs. Nyumbu and Vitori then ran through the rest of the line-up as Eagles’ innings folded for 205 in 43 overs.
