Compton looks a million dollars

ScorecardNick Compton gave a timely reminder of his ability•Getty Images

There was no England selector at Taunton yesterday so in the spirit of co-operation, here is a summary for the next meeting of the top table. NRD Compton v Surrey, Taunton, September 12: Runs 66. Balls: 88. Dollars (looking like): A million. A few facts to gather dust ahead of the announcement of the Ashes squad on September 23.Observing Compton in this form begs the question why England seemingly drew such a heavy line under his Test career. Opting to open with Joe Root in the Ashes was one thing; allowing Compton’s exclusion to be seen as perpetual banishment was quite another.England, it seemed, observed a couple of tortuous innings against New Zealand and took a view, but watching his clear-headed strokeplay at Taunton begged the question of exactly which opener would offer more reliable opening cover for the tour of Australia? Compton remains short of 1,000 first-class runs this season – so does every Somerset batsman – but he averages 48 which is respectable enough. Michael Carberry, incidentally averages 40 for Hampshire in Division Two. To opt for Varun Chopra would be a gamble on an untried player at international level. There was a time just before lunch when it was possible to imagine that this was a top-of-the table encounter, not a match between two candidates for relegation. Compton, in league with Craig Kieswetter, was central to that, counterpunching with style against a highly-regarded Surrey pace attack. The quality of the strokeplay was as good as you could wish to witness. Taunton was a good place to be.In this troubled Somerset season, home supporters drank it in like they might soak up the last sunshine of summer, regarding it as all the sweeter because they knew how ephemeral it would be.Kieswetter fell softly on the stroke of lunch, driving loosely to cover; and soon after the resumption, Compton became one of two wickets in an over for Jade Dernbach as he tried to guide behind square on the off side and played on. It was a frustrating end, but he was the only Somerset batsman to give the impression of permanence. At 133 for 6, the Somerset scoreboard had a familiar ring to it, but they found something within themselves to reach 260, securing two priceless batting bonus points and a first-innings lead of 65. Surrey’s second innings began briefly, but bad light stole 20 overs from the day.If enterprise was the impression as Compton and Kieswetter added 62 for the fourth wicket, the stand of 68 between Peter Trego and Craig Meschede for the seventh wicket was a judicious one. A brilliant catch by the 18-year-old debutant, Dom Sibley, at deep cover silenced Trego. Piyush Chawla also dug in for 32 at No. 10; a late overseas acquisition respecting the opportunity he has been given. But all that felt like struggle; it was the hour up to lunch that raised the spirits. Compton drove vigorously and Kieswetter’s dash was backed up by rapid running between the wickets. Compton was dropped off Dernbach on 42, a challenging low catch to Vikram Solanki at second slip, diving across Gareth Batty at first, and Meaker was ill-served by several thick edges to third man (fashionably unguarded), but the overriding mood of a stand of 62 in 12 overs was one of optimism.Somerset had begun the day with a little victory, denying Surrey a batting bonus point as Alfonso Thomas snaffled the last two wickets without a run added. But Surrey struck back immediately when Somerset lost both openers for nought, with Marcus Trescothick dragging on third ball – a reward for Dernbach’s insistent line.Trescothick’s immediate desire to retain the Somerset captaincy had been reasserted in timely fashion in his column in the . “What I can say is I love captaining Somerset as much as I love the club itself and at this point I have no intention of handing over the reins,” he said. “I know there are people who have looked at my shortage of runs this season and linked it to the added pressure of being skipper – but I have been doing the job for four seasons and I don’t believe it has any adverse effect on my form. I enjoy the challenge and it remains my dream to lead the team to the success we all crave.”Success was not the word that sprung immediately to mind. Survival will do for a start.

England’s seam stocks took a significant blow on Tuesday with the news that Gus Atkinson is a major doubt for the first Test, which starts on June 20 at Headingley, after straining his hamstring against Zimbabwe. Mark Wood (knee) has already been ruled out of the series, while Jofra Archer (thumb) will not be match fit until the second Test at the absolute earliest.Woakes and Tongue will be competing for spots in the seam attack with Brydon Carse, Matthew Potts and Sam Cook, with Shoaib Bashir set to continue as the frontline spinner and Ben Stokes contributing as an allrounder. Stokes previously floated the prospect of playing for the Lions at Northampton if required, but did not feature in the 13-man squad named on Wednesday. The Lions are missing Sonny Baker (ankle) and Josh Hull (bruised heel) from their initial squad, while Zaman Akhter, Henry Crocombe and Dan Mousley have been released to play for their counties in the T20 Blast. Jordan Cox has been added to the squad as he continues his recovery from a side strain, while Rehan Ahmed has linked up with England’s T20I squad.Karun Nair pushed his case for selection with his first-innings 204 in the first tour match at Canterbury, which fizzled out into a high-scoring draw. KL Rahul and Akash Deep are both expected to feature for them in Northampton, though Sai Sudharsan and new Test captain Shubman Gill are now due to travel with the main squad on Friday.England Lions squad: James Rew (capt & wk), Farhan Ahmed, Jordan Cox, Rocky Flintoff, Emilio Gay, Tom Haines, George Hill, Max Holden, Ben McKinney, Eddie Jack, Ajeet Singh Dale, Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes.

Asif, Butt set to contest ban at CAS

Mohammad Asif and Salman Butt are set to appear before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, Switzerland, to appeal against the ICC’s ban for spot-fixing. Asif* will have his case presented by his lawyer Ravi Sukul through teleconference today and tomorrow, but he will appear before the court on February 7. Butt will be accompanied by his solicitor Yasin Patel when he appears before the court on February 8.Both Asif and Butt have served approximately two-and-a-half years of their seven and ten-years bans respectively (with the possibility of a suspended sentence after five years).Mohammad Amir, the third player to be sanctioned, has decided not to appeal against the five-year ban against him. The ban doesn’t permit the players to take part in any official match, international, domestic or club, until at least September 2015.Apart from being sanctioned by the ICC, the trio was also found guilty by Southwark Crown Court in November 2011, on charges of conspiracy to cheat and accept corrupt payments over deliberate no-balls. After being implicated, Butt served seven months of his 30-month jail sentence, Asif six months of a year-long term, while Amir spent three months in a young offenders’ institute.Asif was released from Canterbury Prison in south-east England after completing half of his one-year sentence in May 2012 while in June, Butt was released from prison seven months into his 30 month sentence.Butt since his release has been pressing for his innocence and asserted that he didn’t fix or influence any of the bowlers to bowl a no-ball. “I have no links with spot-fixing nor I have ever entertained any offer, nothing ever practically happened in a match that was linked to any offer,” he told reporters on his return to Pakistan last year. “Of spot-fixing or any fixing, I never asked anyone to do anything or bowl any no-balls, I am not associated with it.Butt, 28, had also hinted to lodge an appeal with the International Criminal Court, but decided against it due to the expense involved and the lengthy duration of the proceedings.* February 5, 2013 11.30am This story incorrectly said that Mohammad Asif was already in Switzerland. He is set to reach there on February 6. The length of the players’ bans has also been corrected.

Cook hails 'great' England performance

Alastair Cook has praised the work of his bowling attack after England went 2-1 up in the series with a seven-wicket victory against India on the final morning in Kolkata.Having been made to wait by R Ashwin’s impressive batting on the fourth evening, England wrapped up back-to-back wins less than an hour into Sunday’s action although they did slip to 8 for 3 as they chased down 41.But from the moment England hustled through India’s brittle batting order between lunch and tea yesterday the result was never in doubt. Unlike in Mumbai, where’s England’s 10-wicket win was the product of four outstanding contributions – Cook, Kevin Pietersen, Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar – this victory was more of a collective.Cook again led the way with his 190 but this time there were important batting contributions from Nick Compton and Jonathan Trott, plus cameos from Samit Patel and Matt Prior, while the quick bowlers had a major impact on the match. James Anderson, finding substantial reverse swing, took six wickets and Steven Finn produced some outstanding spells, especially on the fourth day, during his return to the side.”It was a great performance level for four and a half days,” Cook said. “Everyone performed from one to 11 and that’s what you need in these conditions. Our bowlers, on the first day, to keep India to 300 on that wicket was a fantastic effort.”And after the start they got to get six wickets in that session yesterday really won us the game. It was a credit to the hard work they’ve put in that they can perform in these conditions.”Cook took the Man-of-the-Match award for his third hundred of the series, making it five tons in five matches as Test captain, as he became England’s leading century maker and the youngest batsman to pass 7,000 Test runs. Yet he remained modest about his achievement and focused on the final Test in Nagpur which starts Thursday.”I’ve been hitting the ball all right on this tour,” he said. “It’s nice to contribute to the team’s success. To score runs here you’ve got to bat a long period of time. I had a bit of luck on and I managed to cash in.””We’ll never be complacent,” he added. “We’re not going to Nagpur to make up the numbers – we’re going to try and win a Test match, which we know we can do.”

Kohli, Raina save India the blushes

Led by a Virat Kohli classic, India are now within 82 runs of the New Zealand first innings total

The Report by Sharda Ugra01-Sep-2012
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsSuresh Raina’s fifty had aggression mixed in with an urgency to find security around his No. 6 spot•Associated PressLed by a Virat Kohli classic, after staggering somewhat at two points of their innings, India find themselves within 82 runs of the New Zealand first innings total of 365. Plus a healthy chance in this Test match. At stumps on day two, India were 283 for 5 with Kohli seven short of his century and MS Dhoni four short of his fifty.Kohli formed the core of two middle-order partnerships that ensured that the Indians kept moving ahead. Just after lunch, India had wobbled at 80 for 4, before Kohli became the fulcrum of the Indian resistance even as New Zealand’s impressive seam bowlers threatened to get their teeth into the Indian lower order.A fifth wicket stand of 99 with Suresh Raina took control of the Indian innings after the loss of the top four. A sixth-wicket unbeaten 104-run partnership with Dhoni had made the most of the softer old ball. New Zealand’s triumvirate of leading quick bowlers, Tim Southee, Doug Bracewell and Trent Boult had an outstanding day of purpose, energy, swing bowling and wickets, more than ably aided by their fielders. In the final count, though, New Zealand were held off by these two partnerships. At stumps, the Indian response was centered around Kohli’s most intelligently compilied knock. He came in at 67 for 3, at the fall of Virender Sehwag’s wicket. In the early part of innings, he gave the bowling due respect and with two aggressive partners at the other end, Kohli played at his own pace. He was neither over-defensive or overdosing on the aggro. His strokemaking was of the highest calibre, his first boundary only off the 21st ball. He stepped out confidently to hoist Jeetan Patel over midwicket for six and hitting Boult, Bracewell and James Franklin down the ground for straight boundaries. A controlled pull off his face to Bracewell was sufficient proof of his calibre.Raina’s 55 was a different kind of fifty. It had aggression mixed in with an urgency to find security around his No. 6 spot. He was the prime mover in the partnership with Kohli, given enough opportunity to go onto his front foot. His three boundaries in the second over he faced from Bracewell, however, included a cracking pull shot. When Patel tossed one up, Raina struck a sweet six over extra cover. He was given a reprieve on 48, stumped off a no ball off Patel. His innings came to an end quickly after tea. Like Hyderabad, he was caught trying to tickle one down the leg side, this time to Southee.Much like Raina had done on his arrival during a crisis, Dhoni led his innings with big-hitting strokeplay. He took maximum benefit of the fact that his counterpart had offered him Patel’s off spin at one end for as many as eight overs. Dhoni charged down the wicket against Patel, taking on the fielder at long-on and belted two sixes over his head. That kicked off his innings and got the partnership with Kohli going at a good clip.Smart stats

Pragyan Ojha’s five-for is the third of his career and his first against New Zealand. The previous two came against West Indies.

With Ojha’s five-wicket haul, the number of five-fors for India in the series went up to three. It is only the fourth time that India have had three five-fors in a series of two Tests.

The opening stand between Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir yielded just five runs. In the last ten innings, the pair has not been involved in a single fifty-plus stand.

The 104-run stand between MS Dhoni and Kohli is the sixth century stand for the sixth wicket for India against New Zealand. Dhoni has been involved in four of them.

The fifth-wicket stand between Suresh Raina and Kohli is only the fifth 99-run partnership for India (broken stands only). The last such stand was between Syed Kirmani and Sunil Gavaskar in Chennai in 1979.

Sachin Tendulkar was bowled for the second consecutive innings in this series. He became the third batsman after Rahul Dravid and Allan Border to be bowled on fifty or more occasions.

Regardless of what was happening to Patel, Boult, Bracewell and Southee got the ball to move at good pace, even if they were a bit lenient by not putting enough short ball queries to Raina. Like he had done in Hyderabad, Ross Taylor overbowled Patel at a time when his three seamers were – between them – asking constant questions of the batsmen. Rather than use Franklin’s very medium pace to wobble the ball around, Taylor chose to fall back on Patel.Until then, New Zealand had given themselves the best chance in this Test, Southee instantly justifying his selection over Chris Martin, not only because he’d hit a six during his brief time at the crease. Within ten overs of the Indian innings, Southee had the wickets of Gautam Gambhir, shouldering arms and having his bail disturbed, and Cheteshwara Pujara, mistiming a hook leaving the hosts at 2 for 27.At the other end, after a watchful start, Sehwag lashed at the bowling. At the lunch break he was on 39, with seven boundaries, an surviving an appeal for leg before and two nicks through the slips. His partner Sachin Tendulkar played at a subdued pace, searching for touch and timing. In his first over after lunch, Bracewell’s leg stump line to Sehwag was meant to eliminate the width and room he gobbled up on his way to 43. The third ball was whipped to the square leg boundary. The fourth ball, slightly straighter, was hit uppishly and ended up in the hands of the flying Flynn at short midwicket. When Tendulkar hit a classic straight drive off Bracewell, it offered the clue that he may finally have settled in. One ball later, came the bowler’s denouement: Tendulkar played all over a straight one and was bowled through his defence. It is the second time that Tendulkar was bowled through the gate in this series. Within eleven balls after lunch, India were tottering at 80 for 4 before Raina and Kohli got together.Play had started half an hour early and New Zealand lost their last four wickets for 20 runs, within 45 minutes. The two overnight batsmen, Kruger van Wyk and Bracewell who added 99 for the seventh wicket, met with contrasting ends. van Wyk fell to a sustained spell of inquiry from Zaheer Khan, trying to guide one through to third man, Gambhir-style, but instead edged it to a diving Raina at second slip. Bracewell was unlucky to be the non-striker who ended up backing Southee too far. Ojha finished with 5 for 99, when he had Southee leg before for a lusty 14.Overall, it was a tight day’s Test cricket; New Zealand have kept throwing the challenges, Southee finishing with 3 for 35 and Bracewell 2 for 66; the control of the game will, however, depend on what India’s last batting pair do on Sunday morning.
