Stead gets two-year extension as New Zealand head coach

His extended period will include the 2024 T20 World Cup, the 2025 Champions Trophy and the 2025 WTC final, if they qualify

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Jul-2023Gary Stead is going to continue as the head coach of New Zealand men’s team until June 2025 after getting a two-year extension. First appointed in late 2018 for two years, Stead’s contract was renewed in 2020 until the end of the upcoming ODI World Cup in India, and his latest extension will run until the conclusion of the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, in June 2025.After the World Cup this year, Stead’s extended period will include the T20 World Cup next summer, the Champions Trophy in early 2025, and the WTC final in 2025 if New Zealand qualify. An NZC release stated the decision was taken after “a long and thorough consultative process” in which Stead received “unanimous support” for an extension.”The support for Gary was overwhelmingly positive – from the players, the BLACKCAPS support staff, Major Association coaches and support staff, as well as the New Zealand Cricket Players Association and NZC High Performance Unit staff,” NZC’s GM high performance Bryan Stronach said. “Gary’s results have been very impressive and we’re confident that he still has a lot to offer the team.”Of course, a big part of this decision came down to whether Gary wanted to continue and he made it clear his appetite to take this team forward was as keen as ever.”Stronach further said a split-coaching set-up was considered for the role and rejected.”A split-coaching role was discussed in depth but, with most of our leading BLACKCAPS playing across all three formats, and the culture of the group so strong and positive, we saw clear benefits in supporting the status quo.”Of all the different potential scenarios, we considered this the best option available to us.”Stronach also spoke about a “fourth coach” concept, in which the New Zealand touring teams will be supported by coaches with specialist skillsets or “knowledge of specific overseas environments or formats”. Recent examples of this were the appointments of Stephen Fleming, Shane Bond, Saqlain Mushtaq, Luke Wright and Thilan Samaraweera.”Several months of discussions and consultation preceded this decision and, as CEO, I’m very satisfied all options were well considered,” NZC chief executive David White said. “I’m very pleased for Gary. He’s a quality person, he has the support and trust of the players, and he’s very good at his job.Test captain Tim Southee said the role of the head coach was also about managing people along with the technical aspects that came along with the role.”Gary’s had great success leading us into finals in all three formats and, of course, that World Test Championship win It’s been great the way that he’s come in and built on what was previously achieved.”The sheer amount of time players and support staff spend away from family and loved ones makes for a challenging environment. With so much cricket being played these days, being able to effectively manage people and their workloads is a huge part of the job.”

Middlesex lead queue to sign Derbyshire's Leus du Plooy

Head coach Mickey Arthur hopes Derbyshire captain can be persuaded to stay

Leus du Plooy is considering an offer from Middlesex as he weighs up his future as a Derbyshire player.Derbyshire gave du Plooy his first opportunity in county cricket in 2019 and he has become one of their senior players during his five seasons at the club. He was appointed captain earlier this year but his contract expires at the end of the season, meaning other counties have been allowed to approach him for the last three weeks.ESPNcricinfo understands that several counties have been in contact with du Plooy but Middlesex have emerged as frontrunners. He would be a vital player for them in both the County Championship and the T20 Blast, and is understood to be keen to test himself in Division One.Related

Durham confirm signings of Ackermann, Parkinson

Mickey Arthur, Derbyshire’s head of cricket, has been trying to convince du Plooy to sign an extension with the club and he is expected to make a decision in the next few days. If he chose to leave, he would be the second consecutive captain of Derbyshire’s T20 side to leave the county after a single season in charge, following Shan Masood.Du Plooy is not a household name but has an excellent record as a middle-order batter across formats and his stock is on the rise in franchise cricket. He played for Joburg Super Kings in the inaugural SA20 earlier this year and impressed coach Stephen Fleming so much that Fleming signed him for Southern Brave at the top salary of £125,000 in March’s Hundred draft. He qualifies as a local player in county cricket thanks to a Hungarian passport and pre-settled status in the UK, and at 28, he retains ambitions to play international cricket. He is expected to qualify for England next year, telling the magazine earlier this year: “I’d love to play for South Africa if I could, and I’d love to play for England if I could.”Elsewhere, Durham are close to confirming the signing of Callum Parkinson, the left-arm spinner, who is out of contract at the end of the season. They have also approached his Leicestershire team-mate Colin Ackermann, who captains their T20 side.As reported at the start of this month, a number of Worcestershire players are out of contract this year and have received approaches from other counties. Foremost among them is recent England debutant Josh Tongue, whose potential suitors are believed to include Lancashire and Nottinghamshire.Worcestershire recently confirmed the appointment of Ashley Giles as their chief executive, and convincing some of the county’s best young players to extend their contracts appears to be his most pressing task.

Henry Brookes six-for on Derbyshire debut helps blow Leicestershire away

A career-best performance by Henry Brookes brought Leicestershire back down to earth as Derbyshire dominated the opening day of the LV= Insurance County Championship match at Derby. The 23-year-old Warwickshire fast bowler marked the first game of a short loan spell by taking 6 for 20 in 12 overs, five of them maidens, to send Leicestershire tumbling from 45 without loss to 122 all out. On his first appearance of the season, Brookes showed impressive control to record the second best figures on debut for Derbyshire who rammed home their advantage by closing on 144 for 3, a lead of 22.Harry Came and Haider Ali shared a century opening stand and although Wiaan Mulder struck twice in an over, it was very much Derbyshire’s day.Leicestershire’s batsmen came into the game in good form and looked set for another productive day until Brookes was brought into the attack at the City End. Sol Budinger’s innings was bright and breezy like the weather until he launched an extravagant slash in Brookes’ second over and was caught at second slip.It was not a distinguished shot and triggered an astonishing collapse in which five wickets fell for four runs in five overs. Brookes and Luis Reece bowled a consistent line and length which proved too much for a team which had passed 400 on three occasions, one of them against Derbyshire at Leicester, this season.Lewis Hill played across the second ball he faced and Rishi Patel, who had scored two centuries in his previous five innings, was bowled by one that Reece swung back in just enough. What followed for the Foxes revived uncomfortable memories of recent summers as the innings crumbled with little resistance.Brookes tempted Colin Ackermann into a loose drive before finding the outside edge of Mulder’s bat with a fine delivery. And any hopes of a recovery were dashed when Reece beat Peter Handscomb with another swinging delivery to fully justify Derbyshire’s decision to bowl first.Leicestershire’s thoughts over lunch might have turned to last September when Rehan Ahmed scored a brilliant century on this ground to save the game but the England allrounder could not mount another rescue act this time.Derbyshire’s bowlers renewed their intensity with Sam Conners striking in the fourth over of the afternoon session when Tom Scriven edged a firm-footed drive and Rehan departed in the next over when he tried to glance Brookes and was caught down the leg side. That gave the seamer his first five-wicket haul in first-class cricket and he claimed a sixth by having Michael Finan caught at short leg before Conners finished off the innings.Brookes led Derbyshire off the field with his figures second only to Doug Gregory who took 6 for 9 on debut for the county at Old Trafford in May 1871.Leicestershire’s bowlers could not match his accuracy and leaked runs from the start by bowling too short and wide. Came and Ali tucked in and by tea were only 23 runs behind, but the visitors regrouped during the break and bowled much better in the final session.Mulder made the breakthrough when he trapped Haider lbw trying to pull a ball that kept low and three balls later, straightened one to knock back Brooke Guest’s off stump.Came, making his first appearance of the season in place of Billy Godleman, who was dropped after a pair in the previous game, was lbw to a full length ball from Finan for 49 before the umpires took the players off shortly before 6pm.

Celtic star who played 0 minutes was shown why he must be given the axe

Celtic’s dream of winning another domestic treble took another step closer to becoming a reality when they beat Hibernian 2-0 at Parkhead in the SFA Cup on Sunday.

The Hoops are 16 points clear in the Scottish Premiership table, and they beat Rangers to win the League Cup earlier this season, which means that winning the SFA Cup will likely clinch a treble.

Brendan Rodgers’ side secured the win over Hibs thanks to a first-half strike from Daizen Maeda and a stoppage-time finish by substitute Adam Idah, but they were not the only strong performers on the day.

January signing Jeffrey Schlupp, who is on loan from Premier League side Crystal Palace, put in an impressive performance at left-back for the Scottish giants.

Jeffrey Schlupp's strong Celtic impression

The Ghana international caught the eye with a strong showing on the left flank against Hibs, earning a player rating of 8/10 from 67HailHail and an 8/10 rating from GlasgowWorld, who wrote that he was a ‘real threat’ with his attacking play.

Chalkboard

Schlupp started for the third match in succession in all competitions and has continued to catch the eye with his fantastic performances for his temporary club.

Jeffrey Schlupp

The Eagles loanee had just come off the back of a sensational showing against St Mirren in Celtic’s last Premiership match, as he produced a goal and an assist in the 5-2 win, and this latest masterclass may have just sealed Greg Taylor’s fate.

Why Greg Taylor's fate may be sealed

The Scotland international was an unused substitute and played zero minutes in the quarter-final win over Hibernian, with Rodgers opting for Schlupp ahead of him for the entire 90 minutes.

That came off the back of him being an unused substitute in two of the previous three games, making it three of the last four, and he was hauled off at half-time against Hibs in the league in the match he did play.

Celtic defender Greg Taylor

This suggests that Schlupp is firmly ahead of him in the pecking order, given that the 32-year-old star has been keeping him on the bench, and that spells bad news for his long-term future at Parkhead.

Taylor’s current contract is due to expire at the end of this season and his place in the starting line-up being taken by a new signing does not suggest that he is likely to earn a new one before the summer.

As you can see in the table above, the former Kilmarnock man is among the highest earners at the club – earning even more than exciting forward Nicolas Kuhn, on £12k-per-week.

When you consider that Kuhn has racked up 18 goals and 13 assists this season, the Hoops are not getting much value for their money if Taylor is an unused substitute more often than not.

Celtic may not want to keep a player who is now deemed a back-up option by Rodgers on an extended deal when his wages do not reflect his current status at the club.

Therefore, Schlupp’s impressive performances and his grasp on the starting jersey suggest that Taylor’s time at Glasgow may well be coming to an end later this year, unless there is a dramatic twist in the final weeks of the campaign.

Arsenal hold big interest in "lethal" £50m striker who may replace Havertz

Arsenal now hold a strong interest in a “lethal” £50m striker, who is seen as an ideal solution to their attacking issues, according to a report.

Doubt over Havertz's Arsenal future

Although the Gunners are still in the Premier League title race, currently sitting six points behind Liverpool, there is a feeling they could have done with bringing in some extra attacking firepower during the January transfer window.

In a recent interview with Football Insider, former scout Mick Brown revealed Mikel Arteta is set to pursue a new striker in the summer, casting doubt over Havertz’s long-term future at the Emirates Stadium.

“I don’t think their position has changed since they first started looking at options. Arteta wasn’t happy that they didn’t strengthen in January, because they needed to.

“So if Arsenal can get a top-quality replacement, I expect them to do that in the summer.”

Arsenal keen on "special" £25m ace who's now available to sign this summer

The Gunners have set their sights on a hot prospect, who is being targeted by some of Europe’s top clubs.

ByDominic Lund Feb 9, 2025

Alexander Isak and Benjamin Sesko are among the main strikers to be linked with a move to north London in the summer, but reports from Spain have now revealed there is another name on the list of targets.

Arsenal are said to hold a strong interest in Atalanta’s Mateo Retegui, having been impressed by his performances this season, which has attracted the attention of a number of big clubs.

Atalanta's MateoReteguicelebrates with the match ball

Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain are also ‘bidding strongly’ for Retegui, so there may be stiff competition for his signature, with Atalanta set to try and hold out for up to €60m (£50m).

With the Gunners still lacking a reliable striker, the Atalanta star is viewed as an ideal solution, but they are yet to make any concrete moves towards getting a deal done.

Retegui on fire in the Serie A

It is no surprise the Italian has attracted Arsenal’s attention, as he has been prolific in the Serie A this season, scoring 20 goals in 22 games, most recently bagging four in his side’s 5-0 victory against Hellas Verona.

Italy manager Luciano Spalletti was full of praise for the 25-year-old earlier this season, saying: “Inside the box, he is lethal. And now he has learned how to connect with the team better. He’s going to become a top player.”

If the Gunners are keen on an out-and-out striker, Retegui could be their man, given that he ranks in the 96th percentile for non-penalty goals per 90 over the past year, when compared to his positional peers.

As you’d expect, Havertz outperforms the Atalanta forward on a number of key defensive metrics, while he has also provided far more assists during the same timeframe.

However, the most important thing for any striker is to find the back of the net, and the Argentina-born marksman certainly knows how to do that, so it is promising news the Gunners are considering a summer move.

West Brom now looking to strike loan deal for "phenomenal" 19 y/o ace

A new transfer update suggests that West Brom are eyeing a loan move for a “phenomenal” Premier League youngster in the January transfer window.

Latest West Brom news

The Baggies return to Championship action on Saturday lunchtime, making the trip to struggling Plymouth Argyle, looking to kick on under Tony Mowbray after the excellent 5-1 win at home to Portsmouth last time around.

The new boss would love new signings to arrive in the remaining days of the window, in order to give side the best possible chance of promotion this season, and they have been linked with a move for Chelsea striker Marc Guiu. A loan switch for the 19-year-old has been mooted.

Marc Guiu

Meanwhile, the Baggies have reportedly been pushing to complete the signing of Stuart Armstrong from Vancouver Whitecaps, but the 32-year-old now looks set to join Sheffield Wednesday instead, acting as a blow.

St. Gallen striker Willem Geubbels has also emerged as a rumoured transfer target for West Brom, but rivals Sunderland are also believed to be in the race to snap up the Frenchman.

West Brom eyeing "phenomenal" ace on loan

West Brom are also interested in signing Tottenham youngster Will Lankshear on loan before the end of the current window. The 19-year-old is “set to head out on loan now” and the Baggies are right in the mix to sign a new target for them, along with Championship rivals Burnley, Middlesbrough, Cardiff City and Luton Town. Foreign clubs are keen, too, but a move to an English team is seen as more preferable by Spurs.

Signing a Premier League player always has an element of excitement about it for any Championship club, so Lankshear could be an intriguing temporary addition to Mowbray’s squad.

The Englishman has scored once in the Europa League this season, coming in a 3-2 defeat away to Galatasaray that also saw him receive a red card, and Spurs pundit John Wenham has lauded his ability.

“If in time we can see him improve his passing levels then maybe we can look at him as a Harry Kane-lite or something like that. At the moment though, he looks like a complete out-and-out finisher and he had made a phenomenal start to his life at Tottenham.”

That is high praise for Lankshear, outlining why West Brom signing him on loan could be a masterstroke for the second half of the season.

The next Lukaku: West Brom targeting move for "exquisite" PL talent

West Bromwich Albion could soon welcome this promising youngster through the door.

The Spurs youngster has been capped for both England’s Under-19s and Under-20s, and the fact that his current club may like the idea of giving him more minutes elsewhere makes it an ideal situation for all parties.
