Sanchez says play-offs could decide Cooper future

Saturday’s play-off final was the biggest of Steve Cooper’s managerial career, but the defeat for Swansea City could prove to be defining for his future, according to Lawrie Sanchez.

Having fallen at the semi-final stage 12 months ago, the former England youth manager, who famously led the U17s to World Cup glory back 2017, will be hoping to go two better this time and guide the Swans back into the Premier League.

Cooper, who according to fresh reports from Football Insider has held two rounds of talks with the south London outfit, has impressed during his two years at the Liberty Stadium, securing consecutive top-six finishes. His fine work has caught the eye of the Palace hierarchy, confirmed by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano earlier this month.

But whilst Cooper is preparing for the most expensive game in club football, worth more than £130m at present, manging in the Premier League could be on the cards whatever the result against Brentford.

But he has just two years of club management on his CV, which is stark contrast from Palace’s previous boss Roy Hodgson, who’s taken charge of more than 350 Premier League matches.

When asked whether Cooper would be a suitable replacement, Sanchez exclusively told Football FanCast:

“Steve Cooper is up and coming. Had a good season with Swansea, came from nowhere, and was in the play-off final.

“His career will be determined by that.”

Tendulkar waltzes away to his 25th Test hundred

India were 480/9 at the end of the third day’s play in the third and final Test match against Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, on Tuesday

Santhosh S20-Mar-2001India were 480/9 at the end of the third day’s play in the third and final Test match against Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, on Tuesday. They lead by 89 runs going into the fourth day tomorrow. India scored 269 runs, losing eight wickets in the 90 overs bowled today.India resumed at a commanding score of 211/1. But Glenn McGrath drew first blood for Australia with the very first ball of the day; SS Das trapped in front of the wicket on his overnight score of 84. In the seventh over of the day, McGrath went on to dismiss VVS Laxman (65), caught by Mark Waugh at second slip.Sourav Ganguly who had a tense stay at the crease before lunch, troubled by Gillespie’s pace and bounce, was the next man to be dismissed. He made 22 runs off 76 balls and never looked convincing today, before playing a flashy shot outside the off stump to give Gilchrist a simple catch off the bowling of McGrath.Meanwhile, Sachin Tendulkar was cruising along watchfully, punishing the loose balls to the fence. Rahul Dravid who joined him in the middle was in attacking mood as the two batsmen went on reaping runs off some listless Aussie bowling in the post lunch session. Dravid’s good form was evident in his stroke play and in the assurance he has shown in the middle as he smashed Gillespie for a straight six.Soon after tea, Tendulkar lofted Colin Miller to the mid-wicket fence; the mistimed stroke went up in the air straight to Michael Slater. But Slater misjudged the flight of the ball completely and over ran forward to miss out an opportunity to dismiss the most sought after wicket in international cricket. Slater’s misery in the field on this tour was truly compounded.Aussies were losing their way as Gilchrist failed to latch on to a leg side catch offered by Dravid off the bowling of Gillespie. Tendulkar reached his 25th Test hundred in grand style, lofting Miller for a straight six. The crowd got to their feet to applaud the little master.Jason Gillespie was bowling with a big heart and rewards were due to him. Gilchrist and Gillespie got together to dismiss Dravid and Tendulkar in the space of 26 balls. Dravid made 81 attractive runs off 140 balls with the help of six and a dozen boundaries. He and Tendulkar added 169 runs for the fifth wicket in 42.2 overs.Tendulkar waltzed his way to 126, punctuating his knock with two sixes and 15 boundaries before being dismissed. The highlight of his innings were the three fours he scored off an over from Shane Warne. There were two little gems to the fine leg fence off Warne who was bowling around the wicket. This prompted Warne to bowl a bouncer and Tendulkar dispatched it to the third man fence with a stylish upper-cut.Gillespie’s telling spell of 7-4-15-2 made a difference to the outcome of the day’s play, enabling a late order collapse of the Indian innings. Warne who bowled well all through the day was at last rewarded with the wicket of Sameer Dighe (4), trapped in front of the wicket.Colin Miller who had trundled all along, being whacked to the fence by Tendulkar and Dravid, managed to get amongst wickets. In fact he claimed two, Zaheer Khan (4) caught and bowled and Harbhajan Singh (2) caught by Mark Waugh at slip. At close of play, Sairaj Bahatule was unbeaten on four with Nilesh Kulkarni who is yet to open his account.

Warriors concede points as Dawes and Bulls run riot

A career-best haul from Bulls quick bowler Joe Dawes has helped Queensland secure first innings points on a remarkable day one of its Pura Cup match againstWestern Australia. Dawes claimed a sensational 6/19 as the Warriors were humbled for a miserable total of 78.But it wasn’t all smooth sailing for the Queenslanders either. Around fine innings from the ever-reliable Martin Love (62*) and an intelligently aggressive Andy Bichel(38), they lost seven wickets of their own when it quickly came their turn to bat. They finished a rain-shortened first day at 7/178 and clutching a one hundred runlead. With an eye to a ‘Gabba strip that looked in good order and gave no indication of the batting calamities which were to follow, Warriors captain Tom Moody electedthat his team would bat first after he had called correctly at the toss. It was a decision that he must now wish that he had never made. After a cautious start, the Warriors lost their first wicket when Mike Hussey (7) attempted a pull shot off Bichel (2/38), only to succeed in skying the ball straightback up the pitch and offering a simple caught and bowled. In the next over, Marcus North (9) was dropped by Jimmy Maher at third slip in the only blot on the Bulls’ copybook for the morning. However, it barely cost thehome team anything – an lbw appeal from Adam Dale (2/19) meeting the requirements of Umpire Peter Parker shortly afterward. The form of Murray Goodwin (0) at one-day level has been wonderful in recent times. But that stands in contrast to his Pura Cup form. And the gap between thetwo was not closed at all today, the former Zimbabwean international the victim of a magnificent catch from wicketkeeper Wade Seccombe, who was forced to hurlhimself in front of first slip to intercept a thick outside edge. For Western Australia, things had become grisly enough at 3/21 but matters continued to tumble from bad to worse. This was particularly true once Dawes enteredthe attack. The redoubtable right arm fast bowler enjoyed immediate success when he dismissed Brad Hogg (0) and Moody (5) in successive overs to leave theWarriors in dreadful trouble at 5/33.Brendon Julian (22) and Simon Katich (14) halted the flow of wickets for a time but the trend was largely irresistible.Dawes used to his advantage a helpful bowling track which contained both bounce and pace, catching the Warriors completely off guard after they had elected tobat after winning the toss. He claimed the wickets of Katich, Moody, Hogg, Julian, Matthew Nicholson (16) and Jo Angel (0) in a stint that was never short onaction. For the Western Australians, it was simply an horrific start to a match which they really need to win in order to galvanise their Pura Cup hopes. Against the backdropof the sustained pressure that was applied by the pace trio, some poor batting also predominated. All but two of the ten players to fall lost their wickets to catches, many of them succumbing to over-aggressive strokes. In their turn at the crease – and with only a mere seventy-nine runs needed for the acquisition of first innings points – Queensland openers Maher (16) and JerryCassell (6) looked for early runs, finding the boundary on two occasions before Maher was dismissed by former Test quick Nicholson. The diminutive left handerwas caught at backward square leg as he attempted to powerfully pull away a short delivery.Cassell was then joined by Love, a centurion in Friday night’s Mercantile Mutual Cup encounter and the scorer of more than seven hundred first-class runs for theseason. The elegant right hander wasted no time in displaying the form that could gain him selection for the upcoming Ashes tour, stroking his first delivery past midon for a boundary. But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Cassell was defeated by Moody’s very first ball and then an early tea was taken when Bulls captain Stuart Law (2) mistimed an ondrive at Julian and was caught at mid on.It was when Andrew Symonds joined Love at the crease (with only forty runs needed by the Bulls to achieve first innings points) that the Bulls’ batting moved intotop gear. The one-day international star relished the situation, compiling a very well made 26 before falling to a dubious lbw decision at the hands of Moody. Bichelthen joined Love and, before falling late in the day, swelled the Bulls’ lead to close to the century mark. By this stage, noticeable frustration was setting in for thevisitors.Moody’s spell of bowling could not be underplayed, however. It was first class medium pace bowling at a difficult time for the Warriors and his return of 4/38 told itsown tale about his effectiveness. He might even have secured a fifth wicket if he had been able to hold a hot caught and bowled chance offered early in Bichel’sinnings.Like so many others during the day, though, it was an opportunity squandered by the Warriors.

Newsome claims Barry Bannan could leave

Prior to Sheffield Wednesday’ relegation, Barry Bannan said there was no relegation release clause in his contract and Jon Newsome, who enjoyed two separate spells with the Owls, exclusively told The Transfer Tavern, that it will require a large offer to tempt the club to sell Bannan.

On the final day of the season, Sheffield Wednesday had to beat Derby County to have a chance of staying up and despite going 1-0 ahead, they ended up drawing 3-3 at Pride Park which saw them finish at the foot of the table.

Bannan has been at the club since 2015 and earlier in the season he admitted that he would like to honour his contract with Sheffield Wednesday no matter what league they are in.

The Owls will now be preparing for life in League One under Darren Moore and it would require a mammoth offer for them to sell Bannan. That is according to Newsome, who spoke exclusively to The Transfer Tavern:

“Barry Bannan signed a new contract last year and he’s said that there’s no relegation release clause, but if a big offer comes in for him the policy at the club could be to generate funds to help run the club because he will be on a big wage.

“I suppose it’s down to Darren Moore to decide who he sees fit and what players he wants at the club to help them make the leap straight out of League One.”

Sheffield Wednesday were slapped with a 12-point deduction before the season began which left them playing catch up from the first day of the season and despite it being reduced to six points, it always appeared to be an uphill battle.

League One is now home to several big clubs within English football as the likes of Sunderland, Portsmouth, Charlton Athletic and Wigan Athletic are all currently in that division.

West Ham fans erupt over Rice news

According to a report by club insider Claret & Hugh, via West Ham Central, there is a concern among Manchester United scouts that Declan Rice is too ‘slow’ with a belief emerging that he is in fact no better than Nemanja Matic.

The Red Devils have been heavily linked with a move for the Irons’ star asset in midfield, even prompting GSB to value him at around £100 million.

However, as per this C&H update, United scouts are starting to have major concerns over a swoop for Rice who they believe isn’t pacy enough to be worth acquiring for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The 22-year-old, starting 29 Premier League games for West Ham this season, has managed the most interceptions out of any Irons player this season and has been key for boss David Moyes (WhoScored).

As a result, this strange alleged stance on a move for Rice comes as music to the ears of many Hammers fans on social media – with one calling it the ‘best news’ he’s heard in a while.

Celtic: Eddie Howe move put in doubt

The Celtic managerial pendulum is swinging once again. A few weeks ago it looked as though the Bhoys would appoint Roy Keane but then it was Eddie Howe in their crosshairs.

However, they may now have to turn their attentions elsewhere after a major update emerged on Howe’s future.

What’s the word?

The former Bournemouth boss has been touted as Neil Lennon’s successor for over a week now but an immediate move for the 43-year-old has now been put in doubt.

News from Sky Sports late on Wednesday evening revealed word coming from Howe’s camp that he wouldn’t be arriving at Parkhead until at least the summer.

The manager’s rep said: “Talks of any deal being close are extremely premature.”

They added: “His plan remains to not return to management until the summer at the earliest.”

Howe left the Cherries by mutual consent last August after they were relegated from the Premier League but he is yet to find a new job.

Desmond seething

This is news that will have rocked Celtic considerably. They evidently had ideas of replacing John Kennedy as interim boss in the immediate future with talks taking place with both Keane and Howe over the last month.

However, the idea that they may have to soldier on with Kennedy at the helm until the summer is unlikely to be greeted too kindly by supporters and majority shareholder Dermot Desmond.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-roy-keane-nicky-butt-jesse-marsch-scott-brown” title=”Latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

The businessman seemingly has his work cut out when it comes to finding a new manager for the playing squad and he may now have to look elsewhere again if Howe wants to wait until the summer before making an executive decision.

Last week it looked as though Howe was all but through the door after advanced talks had taken place.

There is nothing to play for in the league right now but finding a new manager to guide their Scottish Cup run could have been game-changing in providing them with some light relief after a difficult campaign.

This is their last remaining chance of winning a trophy this term but with Kennedy at the helm and Rangers to come in the next round, the opportunity of lifting silverware feels slim.

Though, with fresh ideas and a new manager like Howe arriving, it may have given the club some added impetus.

The fact that the Englishman won’t want to arrive until the summer at the earliest should leave Desmond particularly annoyed and frustrated.
