Destaque no São Paulo, Igor Gomes projeta estreia no Pré-Olímpico

Birmingham start in a jam, Lancashire end in one

Liam Livingstone’s penultimate ball heave for six leaving Lancashire requiring three from the final delivery but he was run out off the last delivery

It was the sort of night where it paid to take it slowly. After an accident on M6 stretched Birmingham’s journey time above six hours – this game started half-an-hour late as a result – the teams found themselves playing this match on a dry, used pitch that rewarded spinners, cutters and bowlers who take pace off the ball.Perhaps it rewarded patience, too. A game that, by T20 standards, dragged for long portions – Birmingham hit only five fours after the first 37 balls of their innings – eventually rose to an exciting conclusion with Liam Livingstone’s penultimate ball heave for six leaving Lancashire requiring three from the final delivery. A mis-hit drive straight to mid-off resulted in a run-out as the batsmen attempted an almost impossible second to secure the tie.Victory, their 12th in 14 completed T20 games, takes Birmingham top of the table, though only three points separate the top four. Lancashire have now lost five of their nine T20 games this season. Only Middlesex and Derbyshire have lost more. But it seems a shame that a high-profile game – these sides were last year’s finalists and this game was televised – should be played on a pitch that did so little to encourage attacking strokeplay. Not that there is not a certain value – and charm – to these low-scoring contests. There will be times, in Asia in particular, when England teams play on such surfaces and the next World T20 is in India. Perhaps such matches offer perfect preparation. But was it the sort of surface to attract new spectators to the game? And isn’t that the point of T20 cricket? After an ODI series drenched in boundaries appeared to have revived interest in the sport, it was hard to avoid the conclusion that this was another own-goal by domestic cricket. It is not necessarily the groundsman’s fault. The huge amount of cricket required from their squares renders it almost inevitable that pitches will be reused and reduces the amount of preparation time for each track. Television coverage might also have been relevant here: cameras set-up for the ODI – played on the same pitch – would not have to have been moved by using the same surface. Perhaps there is something to be said for playing more games at out grounds?Bearing in mind the surface, it was particularly impressive that a young fast bowler should scoop his second Man-of-the-Match award in succession. Like all fast bowlers, 23-year-old Recordo Gordon loves to bowl with pace. But here, realising that such a tactic would be self-defeating, he unveiled a range of cutters and slowers balls – including a particularly good slower ball bouncer – that left batsmen struggling to pick up his length or settle against him. A haul of 4 for 20 was reward for an admirably mature, calm and skilful performance.Gordon also hit the only six of the Birmingham innings. Bearing in mind the margin of victory, it proved an important contribution.Winning the toss helped Birmingham. By the time Lancashire realised what sort of surface they were playing on, Birmingham had plundered 49 from the Powerplay with Brendon McCullum, on debut, thumping three successive boundaries and helping contribute to the highest partnership of the match. Varun Chopra’s 40 and Willaim Porterfield’s 36 were the highest individual scores of the game. But once Lancashire’s three spinners came into play, run-scoring became far more difficult. They delivered 12 of the next 14 overs and Birmingham never again scored more than eight from an over and added only 50 in their final eight overs. Stephen Parry, England’s seemingly forgotten left-arm spinner, was particularly impressive in conceding just 19 from his four overs; reward for his control and his excellent variations. While the target appeared modest, Lancashire rarely looked as if they would overhaul it. Paul Horton was run out after a hesitation, Ashwell Prince carved straight to the fielder and Steven Croft slog-swept to deep backward square. Although James Faulkner, who added 39 with Jordan Clark, looked as if he might power Lancashire to victory, his drive to mid-off made life extremely tough.Birmingham, confidence soaring from their run of success, have become expert at applying pressure in the field, with the young legspinner, Josh Poysden, complementing the reliable Jeetan Patel.Lancashire might reflect that their fielding cost them, by comparison to Birmingham, half-a-dozen runs. It was a fault highlighted by their coach, Ashley Giles, early in the tournament and, while it has improved, it remains some way below the current T20 champions. In games decided by such small margins, it is a crucial factor.

Tamim, Imrul showed you can think big – Mushfiqur

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim said he was happy that Tamim Iqbal overtook his individual highest Test score but added that Imrul Kayes deserved more recognition because he did it under physical and circumstantial pressure

Every time Imrul Kayes returned to and headed out from the dressing-room during breaks on the fourth day of the first Test, his teammates reminded him how his idol Kumar Sangakkara used to balance the tough job of keeping wicket and batting in the top order. It was an unusually exasperating assignment for Kayes, one that he would almost certainly never have to repeat.Imrul kept wicket for 120 overs after Mushfiqur Rahim sprained his right ring finger while dropping Azhar Ali on the second day, before partnering with Tamim Iqbal for a record-breaking 312-run opening stand in the second innings. They became the first opening pair to add more than 300 in the second innings of a Test, and in the process saved the game for Bangladesh after they had conceded a first-innings lead of 296.Both Imrul and Tamim got to their highest Test scores, 150 and 206 respectively. Tamim now holds the highest score for Bangladesh in all three formats, and the double-hundred was a continuation of his heavy scoring against Pakistan, after two hundreds and a fifty in the ODI series.Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur said he was happy that Tamim overtook his individual highest Test score but added that Imrul deserved more recognition because he did it under physical and circumstantial pressure.”You have to give Imrul more credit,” Mushfiqur said. “He wasn’t playing in the ODIs and neither did he score in domestic cricket. He was under pressure and to play such an innings is an achievement. He had a lot of extra work as a keeper in this game. We gave them support during the break.”We tried to remind him that just like his idol Sangakkara keeps wicket and bats for 200 overs, you have to do it. They batted for so long in this heat. Hats off to them for their concentration. I hope we can remain like this consistently. We believed that we could bat four or five sessions if our ball selection was mostly correct. I didn’t think their partnership would be this big. It was outstanding.”Mushfiqur said that the pair’s mentality helped the team. Tamim and Imrul raced to their hundreds in the last session on day four. Typically Bangladesh batsmen are prone to be dismissed soon after a milestone or when approaching the end of a session or a day. But they kept going at the same tempo and hit Pakistan out of the game by the end of the fourth day, as admitted later by captain Misbah-ul-Haq.”You won’t give your best if you don’t want to win,” Mushfiqur said. “The draw mentality doesn’t give you a chance to improve. Tamim and Imrul showed that you can think big. They could have stopped it at a 100-run stand but they just kept pushing themselves. They played for the team.”Tamim echoed Mushfiqur’s words later, saying that they had to bat longer to make sure the Pakistan bowlers had less time to bowl them out and chase a target.”Our own job was over after we made hundreds,” Tamim said. “We went to bat thinking now we have to do the team’s job. We have to kill time despite remaining positive.”Imrul’s batting was unbelievable. I am lucky that we bat well together. The manner in which he is batting, anyone would enjoy batting with Imrul. Getting to the record is unbelievable. We are both very happy.Tamim said that he was thinking about the double hundred when he was 30-odd runs away from the mark. On 182, he struck two sixes off Yasir Shah over long-on and on 195, his straight blast over bowler Junaid Khan got him to 201.”I have never been able to reach the standards I have set. I am happy that I have been able to fulfill a dream of making a double hundred. I started thinking about the double hundred when I was on 169. Then a few sixes happened. I knew he would bowl at that spot when I was on 195. It was always going to be good for me if I made it out quickly.”I think Mushfiqur has the best chance to surpass this record within the next year. I am sure Mushfiqur is very happy; he has been helping me a lot in my bad times.”This is now the mother of all opening partnerships for Bangladesh, and also a milestone for second-innings rearguard action in Tests. Coach Chandika Hathurusingha was moved to say that he had not seen anything like this before.”I have never seen a fightback like that,” Hathurusingha said. “Pakistan’s bowling attack is arguably the best on this type of wicket at the moment. Under pressure of 300 runs behind, (it) is a hell of an achievement.”

Pakistan target runs, de Villiers

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq has admitted that his team will need to get rid of AB de Villiers early if they are to triumph against South Africa in Auckland

Firdose Moonda06-Mar-2015Distill cricket into its simplest part and it is a game about runs. Not Powerplays or fielding restrictions or the size of the field, but runs. Plain and simple. So what do you do if you can’t get the runs you need?”If we have deficiencies in the batting line-up, we can cover it up with some really good fielding and support our bowling line-up that has been doing really well for us,” Misbah-ul-Haq, Pakistan’s captain said.Pakistan are not the only team who have chased unsuccessfully in the competition so far. Neither are they the only outfit without a centurion, but something about their line-up just isn’t clicking. The opening pair lacks gravitas, the middle-order is almost entirely dependent on Misbah, and the finishers don’t often have anything to finish off.Although they have managed three totals over 300 in their last 10 ODIs, the rest makes for grim reading. In the other seven innings, they have only got over 250 once. But Pakistan are coming off the back of their highest score in eight innings and have “gained some confidence,” and by implication “determination,” which Dale Steyn has taken note of.”They’ll come out guns blazing, I don’t mean guns blazing like swinging the bat, but they’ll come out looking to pull off a win,” Steyn said.If Pakistan have any hope of overcoming South Africa, getting past the 250 mark is their first challenge. If they can achieve it, Misbah believes they have the arsenal to finish the match off. “We know that we’ve got a bowling attack where if we cross 250, no team in the world could relax chasing that 250,” he said. What about a team that has managed two successive totals of 400? The consensus among most sides is that the only way to stop South Africa is to stop their leader, AB de Villiers. Misbah shares that sentiment.”AB, no doubt, at the moment you could he’s say the best batsman in the world in limited-over cricket. Obviously we’ve got some plans, and we have good bowlers who can really just put him under pressure but the only way of stopping AB is just try to get him out. If he’s there, it’s not easy to stop him. I think the only way is to get him out.”Steyn, though, has warned that will not be easy. “I’d trip him on his way out of the hotel tomorrow morning and hope that he breaks his ankle. I don’t know how you stop him,” Steyn joked. “He’s a serious player and seeing the ball like no other player is seeing a cricket ball before, and he’s playing shots that I don’t think most people have seen before. The only way you can get him is if he gets himself out.”Or if you’re able to produce something spectacular, which is what Pakistan have been working on, although the results have yet to show. They’ve put down catches including Virat Kohl in Adelaide, who was 76 at the time and went on to make 107, Marlon Samuels twice and Lendl Simmons in Christchurch although neither were too costly, and Craig Ervine and Elton Chigumbura in Brisbane. The fluffed chances have cancelled out the incisive bowling but if they take their chances, Misbah is hopeful they can make up for even a batting collapse.”We’ve got some weaknesses in the field. When it comes to Pakistan, we don’t have that sort of athleticism which South Africa, New Zealand or Australia do, but the guys are working hard and trying their best,” Misbah said.As the captain himself has implied, against top teams, only the best will do.

Lights go out on Somerset's hopes

ScorecardAneesh Kapil swings down the ground on his way to a half-century•PA Photos

Halfway through the second innings there was a power surge through SE11. It took the floodlights out for 20 minutes and knocked out Somerset too. Pursuing a revised 275 in 38.2 overs to be sure of going through, their spark faded.Somerset’s equation was dictated by events at Trent Bridge, where victory for Nottinghamshire would require Somerset to overhaul Durham’s net run-rate. The initial task to do so was 285 in 42.1 overs but the loss of four overs for a floodlight failure stiffened the requirement and on resumption they lost their way to lose a third straight game after qualification looked comfortably within reach. It appeared Somerset’s man-made power surge was leading them through. Marcus Trescothick’s renaissance in the County Championship has not extended to the one-day arena this season. His form slipped to such an extent that he was dropped from the T20 side. He chose an opportune moment to regain his touch and bludgeoned 80 from only 54 balls – just his second limited-overs half-century this season. He began with an edged cut over the slips before carving a more deliberate stroke wide of third man for another boundary. The first of his four sixes was a slap over Tim Linley’s head into the pavilion in the ninth over.Nineteen came from the next. He reached outside off stump to heave George Edwards for six over extra cover, took more runs to cow corner and through the off side yet again, before sending a length ball into the seats over deep midwicket. The innings looked to have set his side up for a dashing chase to pip Durham into fourth place in Group B but a jolt of electricity after 24.1 overs had an undesired effect. On resumption, 129 were needed in 14.1 to be sure of going through but as Nottinghamshire suffered a Powerplay disaster, suddenly any victory would send Somerset through. The tenth wicket did their best to at least win the game with a stand of 34 but Nottinghamshire’s eventual victory rendered the effort worthless. And a superb run-out by Aneesh Kapil saw Surrey win by seven runs anyway.Somerset struggled to regain momentum after Zafar Ansari won two lbws against Trescothick and Johann Myburgh in consecutive overs. The lights went on and off. Alex Barrow then swung wildly at Robin Peterson and was stumped. Lewis Gregory became the fifth lbw on the card. James Hildreth kept Somerset in the game with a half-century but when he slapped Ansari to extra-cover, Somerset were slipping out.Surrey could sit back and giggle at the events having not won a single match in the competition – in stark contrast to their T20 form. Jason Roy led their charge to NatWest Blast Finals Day but failed here, following a morning of much media attention. He struck the first ball of the match for four but, to the 11th, was pinned in the creased by Gregory and lbw for 10.Instead, Kapil took his chance to prove why Surrey have offered him a contract until the end of 2015. Released by Worcestershire at the end of last season, Kapil’s capable all-round ability has been recognised at The Oval and here he made a 52-ball fifty in just his sixth game for Surrey.Rory Burns made his way to a steady 40 in 48 balls before falling to a leading edge trying to work Jack Leach to leg – part of a tidy 2 for 55 for the slow left-armer. Gary Wilson was the fourth player to pass forty without making his tally innings-defining. He was smartly run out by Craig Overton from deep square leg.

BCB to investigate alleged altercation between Shakib, spectator

The BCB will investigate an alleged altercation between Shakib Al Hasan and a spectator during the first ODI against India in Mirpur

Shakib Al Hasan had been banned by the BCB for three matches due to an indiscretion earlier this year•AFP

The BCB will investigate an alleged altercation between Shakib Al Hasan and a spectator during the first ODI against India in Mirpur. Acting CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury has said that the board will hear all sides of the story before taking any decision.”We have heard of an incident which we will look into after the series,” Nizamuddin said. “Like you, we have heard of what happened but we haven’t seen. So we have to look at all sides before we can tell you anything more.”Later during the press conference, Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim said the team would have to bear the brunt of the situation, irrespective of whether a player was allegedly at fault.”It was not in my control, and I hadn’t heard it when the incident happened,” Mushfiqur said. “I was busy calculating what would have happened in case of a match taking place. It would be better to talk to the management. If I had known, I could have told you.”I didn’t see what happened. A lot can be said. Whatever the public says, we have to bow our heads to them. So I would say it is not just his fault, but the whole team’s fault. It can be anyone, so the team has to be the sufferer.”Earlier in the year, the BCB banned Shakib for three ODIs and fined him $3800 for making inappropriate gestures on a live television broadcast during an ODI against Sri Lanka.

Thomas, Walton tons thump Guyana

A round-up of the Regional four-day matches that ended on March 24, 2014

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Mar-2014Combined Campuses and Colleges rode on centuries from Shacaya Thomas and Chadwick Walton to roll Guyana over by seven wickets and record their first win of the season. Their efforts were crucial to securing a first-innings lead before spinners Ryan Austin and Akeem Dewar reinforced CCC’s dominance.Guyana’s batting this season has featured a father-son duo in Shivnarine and Tagenarine Chanderpaul but the sheen of the event was taken off slightly when both of them fell for single-figures. Opener Assad Fudadin (71) gave structure to the innings with a composed half-century. But he was left lacking for support, until No.8 Anthony Bramble hastened to a 68-ball 64. He spearheaded a ninth-wicket stand of 40 at better than run-a-ball to hike the total to 263. Austin was the best bowler with 5 for 71.Guyana would have counted on the momentum of that late surge to muzzle their opposition but Thomas plundered 176, with 14 fours and 4 sixes while Walton struck 107 off 193 balls to usher CCC to 391 before they declared. Spin held sway again with Veerasammy Permaul and Devendra Bishoo taking six of the nine wickets to fall. The most drastic impact of the slow bowlers was reserved for the third innings when Austin (4-22 in 26.5 overs) and Dewar (4-61) ran through Guyana. Tagenarine top-scored with 43, but his efforts were only good enough to post a highly gettable target of 46, albeit CCC lost three wickets in overhauling it.Four-wicket hauls by Sulieman Benn and Ashley Nurse helped Barbados to an innings win over Trinidad and Tobago at Kensington Oval with a day to spare. Nurse followed up his first-innings century with six wickets in the match, while Benn finished with a match haul of eight.Barbados opted to bat first and got off to a bad start, losing their captain Kraigg Brathwaite for a duck. Steady contributions by the middle order helped Barbados take control, thanks to Omar Phillips’ fifty and forties by Kirk Edwards and Jonathan Carter. The wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich and Carlos Brathwaite added a quick 82 for the sixth wicket before Dowrich fell for 53. Brathwaite and Nurse then added an unbeaten 190 for the eighth wicket, with Brathwaite scoring 109. Nurse blazed an unbeaten 130 off just 111 balls before the declaration at 479 for 8.Carlos Brathwaite struck early with his seamers and it paved the way for Benn to strike with his left-arm spin. Only Jason Mohammed resisted with 43 as the T&T collapsed to 120 in 37 overs. Benn was brought on to bowl immediately after T&T were asked to follow on.
