West Brom misfit Charlie Austin could benefit most from Sam Allardyce appoinment

West Brom have swiftly appointed their new manager.

Sam Allardyce.

What’s the word?

The Baggies sacked Slaven Bilic on Wednesday morning, less than 24 hours after he steered his side to a 1-1 draw over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

And this evening, they confirmed the 66-year-old former Bolton, West Ham and England boss as their new manager. In an official statement on wba.co.uk, Albion revealed that Allardyce had signed an 18-month deal.

He will take training for the very first time on Thursday ahead of this weekend’s Midlands derby against Aston Villa.

Austin redemption?

Whilst the overall appointment of a forgotten manager like Big Sam is questionable, to say the least – there’s nothing to suggest that he will be well-backed by the board, unlike his predecessor.

In reality, it is the lack of relegations on his CV that makes him seem an ideal candidate on paper but it’s going to take an awful lot to turn around this sinking squad. It’s practically a Championship-level outfit with an owner unwilling to invest.

No one’s changing that around.

Although the change in manager could be of benefit to several players, most notably Charlie Austin, who was effectively finished under Bilic despite the Croatian dubbing him “magnificent.”

Last month, The Athletic’s Steve Madeley claimed the 31-year-old was unlikely to play for the club again, though he has come off the bench twice in as many outings recently.

He could well be in line for some redemption thanks to the likely appointment of Allardyce as there’s nobody better equipped in the Baggies side to play his direct and aggressive style.

Austin cost just £4m in Bilic’s first summer and went onto bag ten goals in 34 appearances (18 starts) on their way to promotion last term, whilst his record in the big time is pretty respectable – 34 goals and ten assists in 108 games, via Transfermarkt.

Evidently, the 66-year-old will know exactly what he’s getting with the former Saints and QPR talisman as he eyed a swoop for him in 2015 whilst in charge of Sunderland, as per ESPN.

Once dubbed “absolutely ruthless” by Sky Sports commentator Don Goodman, could Austin go from zero-to-hero under Allardyce? He may well make the Hawthorns erupt if he finds his tune again.

He ought to consider he’s earning a whopping £70k-per-week.

Exclusive: Marlon Harewood admits shock over Danny Rose situation at Spurs

As Spurs continue to stamp their mark on the Premier League this season, Danny Rose finds himself out in the cold more than ever before. Daniel Levy splashed the cash on new arrival Sergio Reguilon during the summer window and he has become Jose Mourinho’s first-choice left-back.

Ben Davies is still heavily involved in the squad as well, which leaves no room for Rose at present. The 30-year-old has recently returned from a loan spell with Newcastle and since then, he has been reduced to just one appearance for the club’s reserve team.

It’s extremely tough going for Rose, who has 29 England caps and has been with the club for 13 years. Marlon Harewood spoke exclusively to Football FanCast about the situation and admitted that he finds it baffling.

“He’s a top player,” the former striker said. “This is what I don’t understand about football. Obviously, everyone has their differences but despite to the dispute, you’ve got a top-class player there – a top-class left-back who can do a good job.”

Rose was an inconsistent starter last season under Mourinho, making just 12 appearances for Spurs before he was shipped off to Newcastle for the rest of the season (via Transfermarkt).

In their behind-the-scenes documentary All or Nothing, the left-back and his manager could be seen having a heated discussion over Mourinho’s decision to drop Rose after his performance against Liverpool. Since then, their relationship has been tarnished and it doesn’t look like there’s a way back.

“You don’t have to be friends,” Harewood expanded. “Just go out there, work hard then go into the changing rooms, get changed and go home.”

With just over six months left on his current contract, it looks like Levy and co aren’t even interested in making some money off the defender. With no senior minutes in the tank, it’s very unlikely that he will be given a new contract and will simply be forced to endure an agonising wait until at least January.

GSB acknowledge transfer failings with West Ham’s Craig Dawson loan move

David Gold, David Sullivan and Karren Brady appear to have acknowledged their failings in the summer transfer market through West Ham United’s rumoured defence of signing Craig Dawson on loan from Watford.

What’s the word?

According to Irons insider ExWHUemployee, while speaking on the West Ham Way Podcast, the Hammers ownership were reluctant to commit to Dawson long-term this summer as they do not consider the Watford defender to be a first-choice option in David Moyes’ plans.

The east London outfit acquired Dawson following the closure of the international transfer market on a season-long deal, which is rumoured to include an option to buy next summer for around £2million.

West Ham were linked with a myriad of defensive options this summer but saw their efforts fail to result in done deals, with Burnley opposed to accepting bids worth up to £30m for James Tarkowski as the Clarets valued the England international at £50m, while Bayer Leverkusen were approached too late in the market to sell Jonathan Tah and Olympique de Marseille ace Deja Caleta-Car did not wish to leave the Ligue 1 outfit.

Dawson is yet to feature for West Ham since joining the London Stadium natives on loan, but could make his debut against Manchester City on Saturday with the 30-year-old in contention for a place in Moyes’ matchday squad.

If Moyes does include the Hornets loanee, it will likely only be among the substitutes, and come as his first chance to change opinions in east London with ExWHUemployee noting that fan unrest also played a key part in GSB’s reluctance to sanction a long-term deal.

“We ended up signing Craig Dawson, he is a Will Salthouse player as I’ve clarified before,” ExWHUemployee noted. “We were going to sign him on a permanent deal for around £2m. But we were only going to offer him a one or two-year contract and I think he had a three-year contract at Watford.

“And it proved quite hard to get him to sign when he knew he wouldn’t get a contract the same length as the one he had. Also, because there was quite a lot of negativity from the West Ham fans, the club erred on the side of caution and thought: ‘right we’ll get him on loan, he’s probably only going to be a back-up anyway’.”

GSB acknowledged their failings

Having failed in so many attempted swoops this summer, Gold, Sullivan and Brady could easily have opted to award Dawson a contract matching the length of his Watford terms in order to add depth to Moyes’ backline.

However, they appear to have acknowledged their failings in securing a first-choice option and decided best to only acquire Dawson on a temporary deal as the move offers the east London outfit an easy out in 2021 should the Watford loanee fail to establish himself.

The decision also prevented GSB from facing greater fan unrest following the protests seen outside of the London Stadium on the opening day, as they did not commit to keeping a player supporters were opposed to signing but without leaving Moyes weak in defence.

Had Dawson been signed permanently, West Ham may have found themselves in a position next summer where they need to sell the 30-year-old in order to sign the first-choice option they hoped to land this year, as the Watford man would be taking up wages and a squad place he may not deserve – a situation which would surely have angered the Irons faithful.

AND in other news, West Ham risk a Jack Wilshere 2.0 scenario by signing a once-£42.4m-valued outcast backed by a club legend.

Burnley: Newcastle and Southampton join transfer race for Chris Wood

Burnley striker Chris Wood has reportedly had transfer interest from two other Premier League clubs.

The print edition of The Mirror claimed [via HITC] that Newcastle and Southampton are both interested in the 28-year-old, following reports from Corriere dello Sport [via Daily Mail] last week that he had been offered to Lazio.

According to The Mirror [via HITC], the New Zealand international is valued at £13m by the Clarets despite still having three years left on his current contract.

Wood enjoyed an excellent 2019/20 season for Burnley, netting 14 Premier League goals and finishing as their top scorer. That campaign wasn’t a freak occurrence for the 28-year-old, either, as he has hit double figures in the league of his three seasons at Turf Moor, as well as in the preceding two years at Leeds (as per TransferMarkt).

His importance to Sean Dyche’s attack is emphasised by the fact that his 2019/20 goal tally was almost twice as much as fellow centre-forwards Matej Vydra and Ashley Barnes combined, while Burnley’s midfielders managed a paltry six goals between them. [via TransferMarkt]

Wood cost the Clarets a reported £15m (as per BBC) when he joined from Leeds three years ago as a player who was virtually unproven in the Premier League. Having since hit 34 goals in the division, he has consistently shown that he belongs in the English top flight.

Indeed, the Yorkshire club had a £22m offer for Ben White rejected by Brighton recently, with the Seagulls apparently holding out for £35m for a defender who has only played twice for the Sussex club and has zero Premier League experience.

Taking all of that into consideration, it seems baffling that Burnley reportedly value Wood at just £13m, particularly when they signed him for £2m more than that when he wasn’t the proven Premier League scorer that he has since become.

He would leave a huge scoring chasm for the Clarets to fill irrespective of the price for which he is sold, and in a market where clubs can seemingly demand £35m for players with no top-flight experience, it would be kamikaze stuff from Burnley to sell the potent Wood for a mere £13m, especially to a Premier League rival like Newcastle or Southampton.

Bielsa’s usage of youth players at Leeds is over-rated

Marcelo Bielsa is undoubtedly a genius, and after guiding Leeds United back to the Premier League he’s now a certified legend at Elland Road.

Ever since the Argentine arrived in Leeds there’s been a media obsession around his character, philosophy and the inner-workings of his mind with incredible stories from his time in Argentina, testaments from former players and in-depth tactical analysis always making the headlines.

One thing that is often focused on is his ability to bring through young players, and while his track record throughout his career has been exceptional with the likes of Ander Herrera, Benjamin Mendy and Aymeric Laporte all coming on leaps and bounds under the Argentine, this hasn’t been the case at Leeds.

Watch Leeds United Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

Many United fans will have watched the ‘El Loco & Leeds’ Sky Sports special on the gaffer’s impact at Elland Road, and during that show there was a segment about how one of his main philosophies at United has been to give youngsters chances.

“At Leeds, Bielsa has shown great faith in the younger generation.” The narrator says as images of Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Tyler Roberts and Jack Clarke are shown (El Loco & Leeds Sky Sports 12:00).

Peacock-Farrell was replaced as number one by Kiko Casilla just a few months into his reign, and sold that summer, while Clarke didn’t start a single game for United after returning on loan this season.

Roberts has had a bit more of a chance, starting 12 games this term, but when you look at Bielsa’s treatment of youth, the idea of him showing great faith in the next generation has to be dispelled as a myth.

Bielsa has publicly admitted his guilt about not playing Robbie Gotts, he’s only given Mateusz Bogusz 17 minutes this season despite fans calling for him to get a chance time and time again, while Ryan Edmondson has been previously tipped to leave the club despite previously being hailed as a top talent.

The Argentine has done so many things right at Leeds, and to be honest, pointing the finger about him not giving youth enough of a chance is nit-picking, but the wider footballing world continues to claim that he’s handing out these chances when it simply isn’t true.

Bielsa’s handling of youth at Leeds simply isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be.

Who is Ollie Watkins? – Profile

Name: Ollie Watkins

Club: Brentford

Date of Birth: 30 December 1995

Position: Centre-forward

OLLIE WATKINS – HIS CAREER SO FAR

Ollie Watkins is a 25-year-old centre-forward currently playing his football over at Brentford in the Championship. He grew up in Newton Abbot and some of his first gigs in the sport that would later on become his life were at Exeter City. He finally joined their academy at U11 level, having previously been rejected when he was only nine years old in 2003. But that stay in the academy would indeed prove to be quite good and Watkins sore through the ranks to land into the first-team after only a year.

He signed his scholarship in 2012 and by 2014, he also penned his first professional contract, winning his first call-ups and appearances for Exeter in the 2013/14 season. And this was a start of something special for the youngster as he would remain at the club for the following couple of years, albeit with a short loan spell at Weston-super-Mare along the way.

The loan happened between 2014 and 2015 and Watkins would record 24 appearances for the Seagulls, scoring ten goals and actually developing quite a bit as well. This was essentially his first big shot at a regular role in a senior team and he embraced it with both hands. And upon return to Exeter, Watkins was adamant on succeeding there as well.

The now 25-year-old forward ended up playing a total of 78 games for them, scoring 26 goals and also adding 17 assists on the side as well. Needless to say, it was quite a return for such a young player and soon afterwards, Brentford came knocking on the door. In the summer of 2017, Watkins joined the Bees on a four-year contract, signing an extension soon after that, in 2019.

Since then, he has scored 49 goals and assisted 17 across 142 games for Brentford, surely cementing his spot as one of the most important players in the squad and one that has gone through tremendous development since his early years at Exeter and beyond that.

Now, it doesn’t really come as a surprise that he is a wanted man and could very well be on the move to greener pastures quite soon. He is surely ready for it.

TRANSFER LATEST

With his rise through the ranks, Watkins has become a prime target for many Premier League outfits as of late and many transfer rumours have indeed connected him with a switch to the English top-tier. Some of the latest transfer news, however, suggest the newly-promoted Leeds United might look to secure his signature in an attempt to boost their squad for the upcoming challenge.

The 25-year-old has been tipped to join the Whites in numerous Leeds United transfer news so far and it will be interesting to see how Brentford respond to the rumours.

As it currently stands, the Bees might indeed struggle to keep Watkins around for much longer.

PLAYER PROFILE

Even though he used to be a winger by trade, Watkins has successfully transitioned into the role of a centre-forward. All of his best traits that he possessed as a wide man, however, have been retained and combined with the new skill set he had to adopt with the switch, the 25-year-old comes with an impressive package, to say the least.

He is extremely athletic and can use his clever positioning and off-the-ball movement to confuse the markers and both create and exploit the space behind their backs brilliantly. When necessary, Watkins can also be used to pin back the centre-backs and give more freedom to his teammates that way. With good dribbling abilities as well as knowing when to drop, drift or move away from his position, courtesy of his winger days, the 25-year-old can cause chaos in the final third.

On top of that, he seems to give Brentford a decent aerial threat as well.

Manchester United: Red Devils missed out on RB Leizpig striker Timo Werner because of Paul Pogba

According to The Athletic, Manchester United missed out on RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner because of Paul Pogba.

After an initial meeting with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer earlier this year, Werner’s agent held talks with United and Chelsea when Liverpool pulled out of the race to sign the forward.

However, the Red Devils told Leipzig they would only be able to meet his £54m release clause if they managed to offload Pogba in the summer.

Chelsea have now made their move and have now agreed a deal in principle with Die Roten Bullen (Sky Sports).

As it stands, it seems Solskjaer will have to sell Pogba if he wants to splash the cash in the transfer market.

European giants Juventus and Real Madrid have been linked to the Frenchman in recent months but the club have been unable to find a suitor willing to meet their £150m valuation so far.

Although the board had been expected to sell the 27-year-old to fund moves for Jadon Sancho, Jack Grealish and Jude Bellingham, it is likely he will stay at Old Trafford for another season.

It is fair to say Werner would have been a huge upgrade on the attacking options available to Solskjaer at the moment.

Indeed, the 24-year-old has bagged 25 goals in 29 appearances in the Bundesliga this season, creating 7 assists and taking 3.8 shots per game.

In comparison, Anthony Martial has only managed 11 goals in 23 games in the Premier League at the time of writing, providing 3 assists and attempting 2.6 shots on average.

Furthermore, the German international has received a higher WhoScored rating than his French counterpart, as he has earned a statistical rating of 7.63 at the time of writing.

Sadly, it seems Ed Woodward has been usurped by Roman Abramovich, and fans will have to wait and see if the club will make any signings in the summer.

United fans, do you think the board will regret missing out on Timo Werner? Let us know down below!

Everton: Fans react to footage of James McFadden

Plenty of Everton fans have reacted to some recent footage of former striker James McFadden, who celebrated his 36th birthday on Tuesday.

Former Scotland international had two spells over his playing career at Goodison Park, but he is fondly remembered for his first period at the club during the years of 2003 and 2008.

Costing Everton £1.25m from Motherwell, McFadden immediately impressed on Merseyside, and he netted a total of 18 games during his initial five-year spell at the club.

Leaving the club in 2008, McFadden would then move on for a spell with Birmingham City, before returning to Everton for a short period which would see him make just eight league appearances over one season.

Now retired, McFadden ended his career with spells at boyhood club Motherwell, St Johnstone and Queen of the South.

Although McFadden’s goalscoring ratio with Everton was arguably not the best, fans of the club do remember his ability to score classy goals, including his strike against Charlton Athletic in 2007.

Reacting to McFadden’s birthday with footage of that goal via the club’s official Twitter account, and fans have responded with fond memories.

Below are just some of the responses from Everton fans to that memorable strike against Charlton…
