Leeds fans react positively to Hadi Sacko’s farewell message

[ad_pod ]

On Wednesday night, Hadi Sacko posted a message on social media confirming that he would be leaving Leeds United in this summer’s transfer window.

The 25-year-old joined Leeds on a permanent deal from Sporting Lisbon in 2017 and he has actually made 60 appearances for the Whites in all competitions.

The winger has not turned out for the club since March 2018, though, and has seemingly now joined Denizlispor on a permanent deal.

However, judging by the reaction on social media, Sacko remains a popular player with the Leeds fans despite falling seriously out of favour when it comes to team selection.

Indeed, the majority of the messages to Sacko’s post were extremely positive, with many taking the opportunity to wish him luck in his next move.

Trezeguet can help to give Aston Villa a brand new goal threat if he signs

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Aston Villa’s summer has got off to a pretty convincing start. Having signed Wesley from Club Brugge for a fee of £22m they’ve shown they’re not afraid to spend big this summer.

The Brazilian is still largely an unknown quantity at the highest level having played the majority of his career in Belgium to date, scoring 17 times in all competitions last season.

Having added Anwar El Ghazi to their ranks on a permanent basis and also bringing Jota to the club, improving in attacking areas seems to be a huge priority.

And with the club also pursuing Egyptian winger, Trezeguet, there is yet more evidence.

Last week, The Sun reported that they were ready to pay £8m for the 24-year-old but the BBC have since claimed that’s risen to £10m.

They reported that Dean Smith and Jesus Garcia Pitarch have been in Cairo to see him during the Africa Cup of Nations as they eye up a deal.

In the Turkish Super Lig last term, he was in phenomenal form, scoring nine times whilst also picking up the same number of assists.

Trezeguet is a potent goal threat and regularly finds himself in positions from which to shoot from, averaging four shots a game for Kasimpasa in 2018/19.

It’s an area, therefore, that he could prove devastating in if the club sign him this summer.

Of course the Turkish league is far below the standard of the Premier League but it’s still a particularly impressive return.

In one game last season, he had an incredible ten shots per game whilst he had a further seven in two matches.

Considering the number of shots he does have per game he ought to be scoring more goals but the positives are that he’s getting into shooting positions in the first place.

His tally of four per game amounts to more than anyone in the Villa side last season from their promotion-winning Championship campaign.

Tammy Abraham had 2.9 per outing whilst John McGinn sat second on 2.5. Therefore, there is a considerable difference between Trezeguet and those who were playing for the Midlands outfit last season.

The Egyptian played on the left flank for his club last term, an area where Anwar El Ghazi averaged just 1.9 shots per game in comparison.

If he arrives this summer, the Dutchman could well find him a direct competitor for a place in the side.

Manchester United fans left in awe over Mason Greenwood

[ad_pod ]

Manchester United have a history of producing fabulous youth products. All you need to do is look at the Class of ’92 to understand the reputation that comes with young players coming through the ranks at Old Trafford.

A number of years ago Marcus Rashford burst onto the scene but they’ve now got a new prodigy to get excited about in Mason Greenwood.

The 17-year-old was afforded a chance off the bench in United’s 1-0 win over Inter Milan last Saturday and even scored the winning goal. He cut inside and unleashed a curling effort on his left foot which found the corner.

It was a fabulous finish and his performance sparked quite the reaction from United fans on Twitter.

The teenager drew comparisons to a certain Robin van Persie as two supporters claimed the goal was like one scored by the Dutchman.

A further fan said he could bring the glory back to the number 7 shirt whilst another commented that they loved seeing the academy kids step up.

Greenwood played three times in the Premier League last term, as well as making one appearance in the Champions League.

In all competitions in 2018/19, he scored 26 goals in 30 outings.

Here’s what United fans have been saying about him.

Expensive crock: Leeds fans don’t want Andy Carroll

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter are absolutely certain that they don’t want Andy Carroll to sign for the club.

It was recently announced that the England international wouldn’t be signing a new deal with West Ham and would be free to leave this summer. The question was put to Whites supporters on social media and the response was resounding.

There’s no doubting Carroll’s quality, but many members of the fanbase had concerns about his injury record.

The striker has played just 102 league games in his past six years as a Hammer, and with reported wages being £90,000-a-week he clearly doesn’t justify his pay packet.

Carroll may have to drop into the Championship for his next move as he has been less than impressive over the past few years, but if he came to Yorkshire to play under Marcelo Bielsa he certainly wouldn’t get a warm welcome.

Here’s what the Elland Road faithful have been saying on Twitter…

Liverpool fans take to Twitter in hysterics as Carragher trolls Neville

[ad_pod ]

Over the last few years, we’ve all come to love the relationship that’s developed between Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville. Both Liverpool and Manchester United fans love seeing the pair take turns to troll each other, and in the aftermath of Liverpool’s sixth Champions League crown, Carragher has produced a gem at the expense of the former Old Trafford skipper.

As one Liverpool supporter decided to take it upon himself to aim a dig at Neville, producing a ‘missing person’ mock poster of the Manchester United supporting pundit, Carragher added to it in brilliant style.

As you can imagine, this has gone down very well with the Anfield faithful, and as if seeing their side lift the Champions League trophy wasn’t enough for them, watching a former Manchester United captain squirm as Carragher no doubt lauds his side’s brilliance makes amazing viewing.

This will no doubt continue into next season when Monday Night Football returns, giving the Reds just another reason to be excited about the 2019/20 campaign.

Between the Lines: Gerrard instilling perfect attitude in Rangers squad

[ad_pod ]

Rangers overcame Aberdeen in the season’s final clash between the two sides, and Steven Gerrard said all the right things after the match.

After winning just one of the previous six meetings between the two sides, it was pretty clear Rangers had a point to prove on Sunday.

Aberdeen arrived at Ibrox knowing they have flustered and infuriated the Gers in every clash this season, but an utterly dominant performance from Gerrard’s side resulted in a 2-0 win for the hosts.

James Tavernier scored both goals from the spot after fouls on Nikola Katic on both occasions, but they could well have scored four or five if not for Joe Lewis.

One surprise of the match was Lee Wallace returning to the pitch, and Gerrard gave the absolute perfect response when asked about the 31 year-old’s return.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

What did he say?

“It’s a nice moment, but Lee deserves that,” he told the Gers’ official site.

“He has had a very good week in training, trained really well, really strong and he had 45 minutes against Liverpool’s under 23s and was outstanding.

“He was in the 18 on merit today and I just thought with the scoreline how it was right to go to a five and go a little bit more solid.

“He deserved his appearance, it was nothing to do with sentiment.”

Verdict

When the title is slipping further out of grasp with each passing week, it would be all too easy for the Rangers players to down tools and start plotting for next season.

They put in an excellent performance against the Dons though, and it’s not hard to see why when you read Gerrard’s comments.

The gaffer has shown his squad that hard work and doing the right things in training is far more important than age, individual talent or sentiment.

The fact that Wallace, a player who is seemingly destined to leave once his contract ends this summer, was able to force his way back into the squad will keep every player on their toes, continually striving for greatness with the threat of being replaced looming large.

Gerrard has managed to strike the perfect balance of giving his players confidence but letting them know he will take no prisoners, and this is exactly the type of mentality required to really challenge for number 55 next season.

Man Utd missed out on Liverpool star in most embarrassing way possible

[ad_pod ]

Manchester United missed out on the signing of Liverpool’s imperious centre-back Virgil van Dijk in 2017, per The Times.

What’s the word?

United attempted to secure Van Dijk’s signature prior to his move to Anfield from Southampton, which ultimately cost the Reds £75million, a world-record fee for a defender.

The Times claim that United made a phone call to Southampton to enquire about the Netherlands international’s availability.

He had already completed his medical at Liverpool, however, and ultimately signed on the dotted line at Anfield.

Van Dijk has enjoyed a world-class season at Anfield with the Reds still fighting to win their very first Premier League title of the modern era.

It is said that a number of clubs explored the possibility of signing the Dutchman, but only United’s attempt was quite so bungled.

Arsenal considered a move, per The Times, but pulled out when the bidding reached £50m, while then-Chelsea manager Antonio Conte wanted the club to pursue a move, though the Blues board would not sanction such an outlay. City, meanwhile, signed Aymeric Laporte instead.

More embarrassment for Woodward

Ed Woodward is very good at securing commercial deals for Manchester United. The executive vice-chairman of the club, he has secured an official tyre partner, an official wine partner and an official global mattress and pillow partner, among many others.

He is not so good at securing footballers.

Van Dijk is a colossus of a centre-half and has enjoyed a breathtaking emergence at Liverpool. He has yet to even be dribbled past by an attacking player this season, though that may change when he faces Lionel Messi this week.

United, meanwhile, have Chris Smalling and Phil Jones continuing to outdo each other in the farcical performances stakes.

Had Van Dijk ended up at Old Trafford instead of Anfield, perhaps United would be involved in this title race. That, of course, is a stretch but it speaks to his impact on the club.

That Woodward made a phone call while Van Dijk was going through his paces with Liverpool is a joke and speaks to the dysfunction currently gripping the club.

United are continuing to search for a technical director – reports claim that Mike Phelan could be offered the role – and that appointment cannot come around soon enough.

This case study alone should be enough for Woodward to receive his P45.

Transfer Flashback: Liverpool sell Martin Skrtel

On the 14th July 2016, Liverpool announced that defender Martin Skrtel had moved to Turkish side Fenerbahce for a reported fee of £5 million.

The Slovenian international was one of Liverpool’s longest-serving players of the Premier League era, playing for the Reds for eight years and making 320 appearances in all competitions for the Merseyside club.

Signed by Rafa Benitez in the winter of 2008 for a reported fee of £6.5 million after beating out the likes of Valencia, Tottenham Hotspur, Everton for his signature, Skrtel quickly established himself as a first-team defender, making 20 appearances in his first five months at the club.

After the appointment of Jurgen Klopp in the 2015/16 season, Skrtel, who had largely been a first-team player for the past seven seasons, found himself out of the squad regularly under the German, leading to the then 31-year-old defender leaving Anfield for Turkey.

In eight years in England, Skrtel only managed one trophy for the Reds, the 2011/12 League Cup, scoring in the final against Cardiff City as Liverpool went on to win the game on penalties against the Bluebirds.

Skrtel was also named Liverpool Player of the Year in 2012 in a year where the defender started two cup finals, the aforementioned League Cup final and the FA Cup final against Chelsea where the Reds fell to a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea.

Here is how Liverpool fans reacted to the news…

Since his move to Turkey, Skrtel has found his form again for the Istanbul giants, playing 31 games in his first full season with the club and quickly being rumoured with a move back to England, with Stoke City, Swansea and Newcastle United all reportedly interested in bringing the intimidating defender back to the country where he made his name.

Now 34 and retired from the Slovenia national team, Skrtel is in the twilight years and still going strong with Fenerbahce, making 26 appearances in all competitions for the Turkish side this season.
