Man Utd targeting move to sign 22-y/o goalkeeper who could replace Onana

Following an initial solid start to the campaign on a personal note, Andre Onana has endured a turbulent couple of weeks to ignite reports that Manchester United could yet look to sign a replacement.

Man Utd transfer news

If the Red Devils were hoping to benefit from a new manager bounce under Ruben Amorim, they’ve been handed a rude awakening.

With Marcus Rashford cast aside and the former Sporting CP boss sticking to his guns on the tactical front, Manchester United have managed just two wins in their last five games and welcome Newcastle United on Monday off the back of defeats against struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers and an impressive Bournemouth side.

Like the rest of Old Trafford, Amorim will be desperately waiting for the January transfer window to swing open. The new manager is currently stuck using square pegs in round holes in a system that his squad simply aren’t capable of playing as of yet. Not for the first time at Manchester United, reinforcements are a must in the new year.

With that said, according to The Telegraph, Manchester United are now targeting a move to sign Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp in 2025 as a “long-term” option.

The 22-year-old would likely replace Altay Bayindir immediately if he decides to depart next year, whilst also putting Onana under pressure and perhaps even eventually taking the shot-stopper’s No 1 spot, with United clearly looking to the future.

Onana is already under pressure after conceding straight from Matheus Cunha’s corner last time out as well as making a mistake when attempting to play out from the back in the Europa League against Viktoria Plzen earlier this season.

If Lammens did arrive, it would certainly be interesting to see who Amorim prefers.

Lammens is one to watch

As Manchester United continue to struggle, welcoming a younger goalkeeper to build alongside Amorim’s project could quickly prove to be key.

At 28 years old, question marks remain over Onana’s ability to take the Red Devils forward in the No 1 role, especially when it comes to executing Amorim’s risky demands when playing out from the back as we saw against Plzen not so long ago – and that should open the door for Lammens.

Lammens’ stats highlight just how excellent he has been for Royal Antwerp so far this season. Not many goalkeepers in European football can boast such a save percentage whilst maintaining over four saves per 90. The young shot-stopper looks destined for the top.

And while Onana has improved, he remains replaceable. The Red Devils may well have other priorities in a squad full of issues, but that does not mean that Onana is not on the list of players who could find themselves watching on from the reserves in the near future.

West Ham ace who was "nowhere near PL quality" has now saved Lopetegui

Julen Lopetegui and his West Ham side managed to record their fifth win of the campaign on Monday, beating Wolves 2-1, climbing to 18 points in the Premier League, just one point behind Manchester United in 13th.

West Ham held more of the ball against Wolves, with 54% possession, as both teams took 19 shots in the game, the Hammers creating one big chance and Wolves creating two.

Goals from Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen secured the points for the Hammers, and these two goals could prove to be vital for the future of Lopetegui, whose future seems to be riding on each game.

Why the pressure is on Julen Lopetegui at West Ham

The 58-year-old Spaniard has struggled in his first months at the club, aiming to completely change the identity of the Hammers from a counter-attacking outfit under David Moyes to a more control-based side.

West Ham are averaging 46.9% possession (ranking 13th in this metric in the division), taking 15 shots per game (6th most in the league) and scoring 20 goals in 14 games so far. In comparison to last season under Moyes, the Hammers averaged 40.5% possession (4th lowest), taking 11.8 shots per game (5th fewest) and scoring 60 goals in 38 games.

Despite improvements in key metrics, this has left West Ham defensively open, with their press often being pierced open far too easily. This sees the Hammers 14th in the Premier League after 14 games played, conceding 16 shots per game – the fourth-highest total across the top-flight – and conceding 28 goals.

A loss against Wolves could well have been the end for Lopetegui, but a big performance from a defender Lopetegui continues to show faith in may be the one that saved his job.

The West Ham star who just saved Lopetegui

After a performance back in September by Konstantinos Mavropanos, Tom Rennie claimed the defender was “nowhere near Premier League quality”. However, his most recent performance was key to West Ham beating Wolves 2-1, and Lopetegui’s faith in the 27-year-old has paid off.

First Impressions

What did pundits and fans alike think about their new star signing when they arrived? Football FanCast's 'First Impressions' series has everything you need.

Mavropanos has made 13 appearances for the Hammers this season, contributing to three cleans, and totaling 908 minutes played. Perhaps fortuitous not to give away a penalty late on, he arguably saved one of his best displays in an Irons shirt for ‘El Sackico’ on Monday night.

The 27-year-old won 100% of his ground duels, making three interceptions and two tackles. Mavropanos was key to stopping in-form Matheus Cunha, working in tandem with Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the right side of defence in order to nullify the threat of the Brazilian Wolves forward.

Konstantinos Mavropanos and West Ham teammates

But the passing quality was also important in order for the Hammers to control the game (averaging 54% possession as stated above), taking 67 touches, making 45/50 accurate passes, whilst also completing six out of seven long balls attempted.

The recent performances of Mavropanos have kept new signing, Jean-Clair Todibo out of the side, as he partners another new signing Max Kilman in central defence. But Lopetegui will need to see more of the same from the defender if they want to continue to gain points and climb their way up the table.

Leeds could land "ridiculous" £5m star who’d be a dream signing for Tanaka

Leeds United were left frustrated at the weekend after their 1-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park pushed out them outside of the automatic promotion places.

The Whites went into the gameweek in first place but Sheffield United’s 1-0 win over Sunderland on Friday meant that they travelled to Lancashire in second.

A win would have moved them back to the top of the table but, instead, a penalty from Todd Cantwell was enough to seal all three points for the home side.

Burnley’s win later that day then meant that the West Yorkshire outfit ended the weekend in third place, outside of the top two and back inside the play-off places.

Daniel Farke will be hoping that his side can avoid the play-offs this time around, after losing to Southampton in the final last season, and the German head coach could use the January transfer window next month to bolster his squad.

Adding an attacking threat from a midfield position could be one of the items on his agenda, as the Whites have struggled to provide much in the way of quality from that area of the pitch.

Leeds United's attacking contributions from midfield

In the 2024/25 campaign, Ao Tanaka, Joe Rothwell, Ethan Ampadu, and Ilia Gruev have combined for zero goals and one assist in the Championship, with Rothwell providing it.

This shows that Farke does not have a regular source of goals or creativity from his options in the middle of the park, which has hindered the team when the attacking players have not been at their best.

That was also an issue for the German boss during the 2023/24 season, as the likes of Ampadu, Gruev, Archie Gray, despite playing at right-back as well, and Glen Kamara all failed to offer much in the final third.

As you can see in the table above, those four players combined for just one league goal in the entire campaign, which was Gruev’s free-kick against Norwich in the second-leg of the play-off semi-finals.

In his two title-winning seasons with Norwich in the Championship, Farke had central midfield players with the quality to provide goals and assists to help out the attack.

Kenny McLean and Mario Vrancic combined for five goals and 11 assists in the 2020/21 campaign. Vrancic, McLean, Tom Trybull, and Moritz Leitner also combined for 16 goals and 14 assists in the 2018/19 season.

These statistics show that the German tactician always had midfield players who could step up with goals and assists to help his team to promotion in both of those seasons, whilst he – simply – does not have that level of attacking quality in that area of the pitch at Elland Road.

However, Farke could bring in a player with the potential to improve that side of the team’s performance during the January transfer window.

Leeds United's interest in Scottish starlet

The Boot Room recently reported that Leeds United are one of a number of clubs interested in signing Motherwell central midfielder Lennon Miller ahead of the second half of the season.

It was claimed that the Whites have sent scouts to watch the Scotland U21 international in action in the Scottish Premiership, but they are far from alone in that respect.

A host of Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Brighton, have also been sending scouts to keep tabs on his performances north of the border.

The Boot Room added that Rangers and Celtic are also interested in keeping him in Scotland, whilst Atalanta and Bologna pose a threat from the Serie A.

This shows that Leeds face plenty of competition from some huge clubs across the United Kingdom and Europe, which means that it could be a difficult deal to get over the line in January.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

It was also claimed that Motherwell are set to demand a fee of around £5m for their impressive academy graduate, who the Whites must now push to win the race for as he could be a dream signing for Tanaka and Farke.

Why Lennon Miller would be a dream signing for Ao Tanaka

The Scottish sensation has been in impressive form for Motherwell in the Premiership this season and his performances suggest that the potential is there for him to come in and offer the Whites what they currently lack in the middle of the park.

Tanaka has been a fantastic performer in midfield since his move from Fortuna Dusseldorf, with a 92% pass completion rate and 3.5 tackles and interceptions per game across 15 outings in the Championship.

He has provided a metronomic and combative presence for the West Yorkshire outfit, with his ability to retain possession at an impressive rate, whilst also being able to consistently make defensive interventions to win the ball back for his side and cut out attacks for the opposition.

However, Tanaka has yet to score his first goal for Leeds and has not provided any assists from midfield, which suggests that he could thrive alongside a midfielder who can offer more quality at the top end of the pitch.

As you can see in the table above, Miller has provided regular quality from a midfield position for Motherwell, with eight goals and ‘big chances’ combined in 13 games.

The 18-year-old star, who was described as a “ridiculous” talent by pundit James McFadden, still has plenty of years left ahead of him to take his game to another level and offer even more in the final third.

Therefore, Miller could come in as a dream midfield partner for Tanaka, as the Japanese maestro can provide defensive strength and passing quality, whilst the Scottish ace can offer a big threat as a scorer and a creator to add another side to the team’s attacking play.

West Ham must unleash "world-class" Kudus replacement who Newcastle wanted

West Ham United and Julen Lopetegui could be heading into a must-win game against Newcastle on Monday evening, with the 58-year-old Spaniard’s job on the line, as pressure continues to mount.

The Hammers sit 14th in the Premier League on 12 points, whilst the Magpies sit ninth with 18 points. A win for West Ham wouldn’t immediately affect their league position, but it would take them six points away from the dreaded relegation zone.

Lopetegui’s side haven’t beaten Newcastle at St James’ Park since 2021, when they won 4-2 under David Moyes. Since then, the Irons have drawn three and lost two in their Premier League fixtures against the Magpies both home and away.

But who is available for West Ham in this clash, and who will be absent?

The latest West Ham team news

West Ham will remain without their summer signing, Niclas Füllkrug, who is out with “achilles tendon irritation”. The 31-year-old has only managed four appearances since joining the club, and is yet to provide either a goal or an assist in his 137 minutes played.

However, the biggest omission for the Hammers is, of course, Mohammed Kudus, who is still suspended after his red card against Tottenham.

Kudus was a key figure last season, scoring 14 goals and assisting six, but Lopetegui could have the exact man for the job to replace him, with summer signing, Crysencio Summerville.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

West Ham's best Kudus replacement

Back in June 2024, Newcastle were reportedly interested in Leeds winger, Summerville, when highly-rated Yankuba Minteh was set to join Brighton.

One month later, however, it was West Ham who had signed Summerville from Leeds, for a fee of around £25m plus add-ons.

Summerville has previously been labelled as “world-class” by journalist Jake Winderman, and has gone on to win the Championship POTY last season, making 43 appearances, scoring 19 goals and providing nine assists in 3,525 minutes played.

He’s evidently a great player but it just hasn’t clicked for him during the infancy of his Irons career.

Whilst the metrics above show Kudus provides a slightly more direct approach, driving at players more frequently (3.78 successful take-ons), getting a high shot volume off in each game, and providing real direct goal threat, Summerville brings a different, more intricate style.

The Dutchman is a bit more elegant with his movement, looking to find clever passes, be creative with his angles and put others in positions to succeed. His key passes per 90 (1.84) and shot-creating actions (3.68) both show this, alongside his 0.16 xAG per 90 (expected assisted goals).

Crysencio Summerville for West Ham

Lopetegui could look to have Jarrod Bowen – another Irons player previously liked with Newcastle – playing more directly in the absence of Kudus, whilst Summerville becomes that slightly deeper creator on the left side, providing the team with balance and looking to exploit the Newcastle high press.

The former Leeds star could be the one who comes back to haunt Newcastle, having been linked with a move there in the summer, before making a move to the Hammers instead, which would make it very poetic if he seals the winner against the Magpies.

Lopetegui could save his job by unleashing West Ham's £35m "animal"

West Ham must unleash this “animal” in order to stop Alexander Isak on Monday.

Man Utd make contact to sign £64m PSG ace who Amorim thinks is interesting

In what could be the first signing of the Ruben Amorim era, INEOS have reportedly now made contact to sign a Champions League forward for Manchester United in 2025.

Man Utd transfer news

There’s work to be done at Old Trafford. The final few months of the Erik ten Hag era only set the Red Devils back – arguably to square one – to give Amorim the ultimate task of turning things around. The former Sporting Club boss officially arrives this week and will square off against Ipswich Town in his first game after the forthcoming international break.

Amorim wants to sign "important" ex-Man City star in first Man Utd arrival

This would be a controversial move…

1 ByTom Cunningham Nov 9, 2024

With a new manager appointed and one they’ll be hoping finally solves their problems for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United look set to get ruthless, showing the door to a number of players. Among those looks likely to be Victor Lindelof, who is on course to leave as a free agent upon the expiry of his current contract at the end of the campaign.

Given recent reports linking Lindelof to AC Milan, the Swede seems almost certain to be among the departures. As he and others potentially leave, however, the Red Devils could welcome a Champions League forward.

According to reports in Spain, INEOS have made contact to sign Randal Kolo Muani for Manchester United and Amorim. The Frenchman has struggled at Paris Saint-Germain and now looks destined to leave the Ligue 1 champions just two years after arriving from Eintracht Frankfurt. In need of a revival, Manchester United could step in, with Amorim seeing the player as an interesting option.

It must be said though, that the 25-year-old could cost a hefty fee if PSG are looking to regain as much of the initial £64m that they splashed out in 2023, which would give United plenty to think about. The Red Devils have made several transfer mistakes in the past and do not need to add the £203,000-a-week forward to that list.

"Superb" Kolo Muani would be a risk

Whilst he showed potential at Nantes before truly bursting into life at Frankfurt – scoring 23 goals and assisting a further 17 in the 2022/23 campaign – Kolo Muani has simply struggled on the big stage. Even in the absence of Kylian Mbappe, he has failed to establish himself as the main man at PSG, culminating in just two Ligue 1 starts so far this season.

The 25-year-old was once described as a “superb player” by Football Talent Scout’s Jacek Kulig, but is not currently operating at that level. There is, of course, plenty of time to turn things around but Old Trafford is not the place to do that. In a transitional period of struggle themselves, Manchester United are in no position to help players back to their best form.

As Manchester United and Kolo Muani look to rebuild, it’d arguably be best to take a separate path.

Virat Kohli: 'I will be batting at three'

“Things were different before IPL started and now KL Rahul is playing the way he is, so it’s very hard to look past him at top of the order.”

Virat Kohli has indicated that he will bat at No. 3 during the T20 World Cup, reversing his desire to open with Rohit Sharma, which he expressed during the home T20 series against England in March. Speaking on Monday at the toss ahead of India’s first warm-up match against England, Kohli said KL Rahul’s commanding form in the IPL was so compelling that he was the best choice to be Rohit’s opening partner.”Things were different before IPL started and now KL Rahul is playing the way he is, so it’s very hard to look past him at top of the order,” Kohli said. “Rohit is a no-brainer. He has been a world-class player right at the top of the order for us. I will be batting at three.”In the 16 matches he has played at the previous three T20 World Cups, Kohli has always batted at No. 3. Kohli was the highest run-getter in the 2014 edition of the tournament, and the second-highest in 2016.But in March, after India’s emphatic win in the fifth T20I against England, Kohli said he would “like to partner” with Rohit because of the potential “damage” each batter was capable of causing once set.The 94-run opening partnership between Rohit and Kohli was the scaffolding on which India built the win, with the captain batting through the innings and scoring an unbeaten 52-ball 80. Rahul was dropped for the final T20I after scoring just 15 runs in the first four games, including two ducks.KL Rahul is set to reclaim his opening slot after finishing the IPL as its third-highest run-getter•Cricket Australia via Getty Images

That was only the seventh occasion on which Kohli opened for India in T20Is, but he said he would open for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL to prepare for the World Cup. Kohli finished this IPL with 405 runs at a strike rate of 119.46 and an average of 28.92.In 16 T20 games this year, including 15 in the IPL, Kohli has opened the batting and managed strike rates of 129.00 in the powerplay and 112.57 in the middle overs. The middle-overs strike rate is the lowest among Indian batters who have batted five or more times this year.In contrast Rahul, leading Punjab Kings, once again finished among the IPL’s most prolific batters, finishing as the third-highest runmaker with 626 runs. Although the Kings failed to make the play-offs, Rahul ended the tournament with a spectacular, unbeaten 42-ball 98 against eventual champions Chennai Super Kings, one of the innings of the tournament.Since 2018, Rahul has been the highest run-getter in the IPL with 2548 runs, winning the Orange Cap (most runs) in the 2020 edition. While announcing the India 15 for the World Cup, Chetan Sharma, India’s chief selector, had nominated Rohit and Rahul as the first-choice openers with Ishan Kishan as the back-up, without naming Kohli. Against England in the warm-up game, both Rahul and Kishan were part of the playing XI with Rohit resting. This World Cup is Kohli’s final assignment as India’s T20I captain after he announced recently that he would step down from the leadership position in the shortest format. Kohl said India were “pretty sorted” about their planning ahead of the first match in the tournament, on October 24 in Dubai against Pakistan.

Mitchell Marsh's No. 3 success could force Steven Smith into middle order

The allrounder’s form over the last few months will make it hard to move him

Andrew McGlashan11-Oct-2021Mitchell Marsh appears set to retain the No. 3 spot in Australia’s XI for the T20 World Cup after his success on the tours of West Indies and Bangladesh which will have a knock-on impact on where Steven Smith returns to the side.Marsh was Australia’s standout batting star on the recent tours, scoring 375 runs across 10 matches, with the series in the Caribbean being the first time at batted at No. 3. They were missing a host of first-choice players for those trips with Smith, David Warner, Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis now all available again.Maxwell’s outstanding returns in the IPL for Royal Challengers Bangalore make a strong case for him batting as high as possible to maximise the time he has at the crease with No. 4 seeming the logical place. However, that would mean Smith, who has missed Australia’s last three T20I series, moving down to the middle order and since 2011 he has only twice batted lower than No. 4 in T20Is.Related

Mitchell Marsh's simple plan: 'I have just practised hitting sixes'

“I dare say that if I play in this tournament, I’ll be listed at No. 3,” Marsh said. “But I think the beauty of our squad is that from three to six or even seven, all of us can float. It will just be a matter of game situation and who we think is best to go in next. So, I think I’ll be at the top, but it’s about being adaptable and being able to float with the guys that we’ve got coming after me.”Marsh picked up the form he had shown overseas in his one domestic innings before leaving for the World Cup when he hit 111 off 124 for Western Australia in the Marsh Cup. As he enters his fourth global limited-overs event, on the back of a seven-week period at home where he also got engaged, he feels well placed.Mitchell Marsh took his chance up the order•Getty Images

“I probably feel more confident just in my preparation and that often allows me to go out there and just play the game and try and perform for the team,” he said. “I know that when I’ve prepared really well I go out there full of confidence and that’s certainly been the case for the last few months. I’ll continue to do that.”On the evidence of some of the IPL, Marsh’s success on slow pitches in West Indies and Bangladesh could stand him in good stead. Playing spin was an area of his game he put particular focus in, picking the brains of Adam Zampa to find out how he would bowl to him and then working out ways to counter that.”I just asked him where he where he would bowl to me, to try and stop me from scoring. I think if I can try and nullifying bowlers from and doing that, and get the game a bit more on my terms when playing against spin, it becomes a little bit easier and you can you get more boundary options.”I’ve watched guys like Marcus Stoinis who use the crease unbelievably well. Getting back and hitting guys over deep midwicket off the back foot for six and I think when you start playing shots like that, then you get more balls in your area to look down the ground. In these conditions we know we’re going to get a lot of spin.”

Officials dispatched as Real Madrid consider signing £100m Arsenal star

Real Madrid have sent employees to run the rule over an Arsenal star who they are considering a deal for, as Carlo Ancelotti's side cast their eye to the Premier League in search of proven talent.

Arsenal preparing for all-important north London derby against Tottenham

The north Londoners have an all-important derby clash against Tottenham awaiting them after the international break, and Mikel Arteta will be desperate to return to winning ways after being held by Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend.

Kai Havertz's expertly taken chip over Bart Verbruggen in the Brighton net was later cancelled out by Joao Pedro's second-half strike in the second half, with the game finishing 1-1 and ending Arsenal's winning start to the new Premier League season.

"It was a very emotional afternoon, for sure," said Arteta on Arsenal's 1-1 draw with Brighton.

"We started the game really well, created three or four chances that we didn’t convert. After that we had a period with some issues, particularly with the ball and we lacked some dominance in that period. We then score a really good goal in a moment when we take advantage of the opponent. Then we go in at half-time, come back and we were really strong. Then the referee makes a decision that changes the course of the game. With 10 men, the team reacted unbelievably well, the stadium reacts unbelievably well and we should have won the game."

To make matters more complicated for Arteta and his coaching staff, star midfielder Declan Rice was controversially sent off for two bookable offences on the day, so he is set to miss Arsenal's trip to Spurs next weekend.

Arsenal will also be without summer signing Mikel Merino for nearly two months, following the Spaniard's shoulder injury. Merino fractured his deltoid in a collision with Gabriel Magalhaes during the Spaniard's first ever training session at London Colney, so it looks like Arteta will be pretty short in midfield.

There are even suggestions that Arteta could hand youngster Salah-Eddine Oulad M'hand his senior Arsenal debut against Tottenham as a result, while other reports state Havertz could be dropped into midfield so Raheem Sterling can play a false-nine role.

Real Madrid consider signing William Saliba from Arsenal

Whatever tactical tweaks Arteta is planning, one of the few certainties next weekend is that William Saliba will be playing a crucial role at the heart of his defence.

The Frenchman has starred since coming into the team on a regular basis at the beginning of 2022/2023, so much so that Real Madrid have been regularly linked with a move for Saliba.

Arsenal centre-back William Saliba

The Boot Room and journalist Graeme Bailey have an update on this, and they write that Real are indeed considering a move for Saliba, sending their club scouts to watch over him during Arsenal's 2-0 win over Aston Villa – where the 23-year-old put in an excellent display.

The centre-back, who Bailey claims could fetch around £100 million in this current market, is firmly on Ancelotti's radar as they carry on keeping close tabs.
