Man Utd have an amazing teen who could be more exciting than Toby Collyer

Manchester United fans would have hoped that Erik ten Hag's men would put up more of a valiant effort in attempting to topple Arne Slot's Liverpool after the Red Devils fell to a late Premier League defeat on the road at Brighton and Hove Albion the match before.

Instead, the visiting Reds made Old Trafford their playground once more as the likes of Mohammed Salah and Luis Diaz ran rings around the hapless Man United defence, with Casemiro notably a below-par performer in the sobering 3-0 loss.

Ten Hag hauled off the former Real Madrid defensive midfielder at half-time, after a whole catalogue of errors from the Brazilian allowed Diaz to score a first-half brace, with Man United youngster Toby Collyer then thrown in at the deep-end in his place.

The homegrown United number 43 impressed on the big stage, as the door now opens for more first-team opportunities moving forward for the promising 20-year-old.

Collyer's performance in numbers

Making his senior debut earlier this campaign in the Community Shield versus Manchester City, Collyer certainly stood out more in this defeat at the Theatre of Dreams, as a ray of sunshine on an otherwise gloomy afternoon.

On the contrary, Casemiro was wobbly throughout a horror-show first-half display, with possession squandered 14 times to the detriment of his side on top of other worrying numbers from the South American, as Liverpool showed no mercy in attack.

The bright 20-year-old – on the other hand – would impress by winning 100% of the ground duels that came his way in the contest, as Liverpool gradually sat back more and more to protect their big lead in the second half, with Collyer also only misplacing four of his 19 passes when the ball came to his feet.

It was a brave display from the Red Devils gem, who will be hoping more opportunities in the senior mix come off the back of this promising 45-minute showing, as Casemiro slides down the pecking order at the Premier League giants.

Collyer might not be the only academy product who gets thrust into the spotlight across this long season to come, as Harry Amass continues to be held in high regard by the expectant Man United masses, as a potential starting left-back for the future when Luke Shaw is finally ditched.

Luke Shaw

Man Utd's next best academy sensation

Taken on Man United's pre-season tour of America before the 24/25 season got underway, Amass – alongside the likes of Collyer and another one tipped for bigger things for the future in the form of Ethan Wheatley – were given significant time to shine, with a start handed to him against Arsenal when the two Premier League powerhouses met in Los Angeles.

The raw 17-year-old was further present against Real Betis and Liverpool, but really shone when the Red Devils faced off against Rangers in Scotland before making the lengthy journey out to the States, with four successful dribbles managed against the Glasgow giants in an exciting second-half cameo.

Yet, he hasn't quite been given the same luxury as Collyer when it comes to first-team minutes as the wide-eyed teenager awaits his first senior appearance still.

He will continue banging down the door for those opportunities, however, with two assists managed from his three U21 appearances this season to date, as Ten Hag assesses what next batch of youngsters are deserving of senior chances.

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro

If the likes of Casemiro and other fixed first-teamers at the Theatre of Dreams continue to drastically underperform, Amass and other young diamonds could be chucked into the main team sooner rather than later.

Marnus Labuschagne's one-man show falls short as Gloucestershire hold their nerve

Gloucestershire 179 for 6 (Phillips 44, Douthwaite 3-28) beat Glamorgan 175 for 9 (Labuschagne 93*) by four runsMarnus Labuschagne’s superb unbeaten 93 off 56 balls couldn’t stop Gloucestershire from starting their Vitality Blast campaign with a four-run win over GlamorganGlenn Phillips’ 44 and 30 from Benny Howell off 15 balls saw Gloucestershire post 179 for 6 in Cardiff which always looked like being a challenging total. And despite Labuschagne’s fine innings on his Blast debut, Glamorgan fell just short against some tidy Gloucestershire bowling.Glamorgan weren’t helped by batting second and the fact there were no floodlights available at Sophia Gardens as the skies darkened.Gloucestershire won the toss and chose to bat, and Glamorgan opened with spin at both ends. Andrew Salter cleaned up Miles Hammond in his first over. Ian Cockbain then skied to Timm van der Gugten at mid-on off the bowling of Ruaidhri Smith for 16 as Gloucestershire reached 34 for 2 from their first six overs.Gloucestershire struggled in the first powerplay, but Phillips got the scoreboard moving with consecutive sixes and then a four off Salter. But just when Gloucestershire looked like they were getting going, Chris Dent was caught superbly by Kiran Carlson on the cover boundary for 20 from the bowling of Dan Douthwaite.Phillips was the mainstay of the Gloucestershire innings as they went past 100 in the 13th over. But he fell short of 50 to the part-time spin of Labuschagne when Nick Selman took a fine catch on the mid-wicket boundary.Labuschagne followed in Selman’s path with another boundary catch to dismiss Jack Taylor, but Gloucestershire finished with a flourish as Smith’s 18th over went for 16.David Lloyd’s fine form continued as he started Glamorgan’s reply with a quickfire 28 which included two sixes before he was clean bowled by Josh Shaw. Selman soon followed Lloyd back to the pavilion and when Colin Ingram was clean bowled by Shaw for just a single Glamorgan were 46 for 3 from the first powerplay.Labuschagne and Chris Cooke rebuilt the innings to take Glamorgan to 80 for 3 at the halfway stage and Cooke was dropped on the midwicket boundary in the 11th over. But he wasn’t so lucky when he was caught by Hammond from the bowling off Tom Smith for 26, leaving Glamorgan’s chase in the hands of Labuschagne. He did go to the game’s first half-century from 36 balls, but Carlson fell for 14, Douthwaite was lbw first ball and Salter was run out for a duck trying to keep Labuschagne on strike.Labuschagne gave it everything, but he needed 19 from the last over and couldn’t find the boundary enough despite a six from the last ball as Ryan Higgins held his nerve.

Leeds make £13m offer to sign "unbelievable" star; 49ers have had a reply

Leeds United have submitted a late £13m offer to sign a Championship star, with the 49ers Enterprises already receiving a reply.

Leeds win race to sign Solomon and want more

The Whites have so far brought in five new players, with Largie Ramazani being the latest from Almeria last week. Daniel Farke’s side won 2-0 at Sheffield Wednesday on Friday evening, with Ramazani in attendance, and the boss said after the game that a few more will need to join the Belgian before the deadline.

"I don't want to speak too much about the players not involved with us today and who will come in the next days, obviously from tomorrow he [Ramazani] will train with us.

"I want to spotlight a bit more the players who were involved and perhaps in the next weeks are not that much in the spotlight, like young players like Sam Chambers, or Alex Cairns.

“Obviously it's good we have Largie signed and [I] have made it clear we definitely need a few more if we want to be ambitious. Just with a squad of 12, 13 senior players, for this emotional and ambitious club to be successful it's not possible.

“We have a good group to build on, we showed this today but we will also need a few additions and then we speak about them when they have trained with us. At the moment all the players deserve to be in the spotlight that were involved tonight."

One of those to link up with the Leeds squad is Tottenham winger Manor Solomon, with the Israel international set to join on a season-long loan without the option to buy.

However, a midfielder and full-back are also wanted at Elland Road, according to The Yorkshire Evening Post’s Graham Smyth, and it looks as if a bid has been made for a midfield target.

Leeds make £13m offer for Sheffield United star Hamer

According to The Star, Leeds have made a bid worth £13m for Sheffield United midfielder Gus Hamer, one which has been rejected by their Yorkshire rivals. This comes after Blades boss Chris Wilder said the club have had a bid “a million miles off” for one player, which could be Hamer.

“There have been a couple of bids for players; one was pretty close and another was a million miles off. If and when decisions on players get made by the board then I'll get notified and we have to have a plan and be ready. It's a bit of me looking into the future and trying to see who potentially might go.”

Hamer did have a release clause after Sheffield United were relegated but that has expired, with Adam Pope claiming that it is unlikely Leeds go back in with an improved offer.

"I’m told Leeds United unlikely to go back with an improved offer for Sheffield United midfielder Gus Hamer after initial bid for him rejected by Blades."

The 27-year-old, called "unbelievable" by former teammate Oli McBurnie, can play as a holding, central or attacking midfielder, but as things stand, he won’t be signing for the Whites before Friday.

Postecoglou driving Tottenham move for "dream" Richarlison replacement

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou is personally driving his club's pursuit to sign a "dream" replacement for Richarlison before summer deadline day.

Spurs aim to sell Richarlison and replace him with new striker

Multiple reports from the last week have indicated that Richarlison may not be a Spurs player beyond August 30, which is when the English transfer window will officially close.

Tottenham consider swap move for £162k-a-week forward with Ange "obsessed"

The Australian is desperate for a new attacker.

According to reliable GiveMeSport reporter Ben Jacobs, Tottenham are determined to sell Richarlison, amid interest from the Saudi Pro League, with fellow respected journalist Fabrizio Romano claiming Spurs are actively looking for a new striker.

After a regrettable debut campaign in north London under ex-boss Antonio Conte, Richarlison bagged 12 goals in all competitions last season, finishing 2023/2024 as their second top scorer behind superstar Son Heung-min.

The 27-year-old, signed from Everton for around £60 million in the summer of 2022, enjoyed a very impressive mid-season purple patch which hugely contributed to his end-of-season haul.

Richarlison racked up nine goals in eight Premier League games from December last year through to February, but despite his flashes of brilliance, Spurs are prepared to offload the South American and bring in a successor.

leroy-sane-richarlison-spurs

As the ex-Watford ace's future hangs in the balance, reports have centered around which names could come to Spurs in his stead. These targets would also have the task of replacing Harry Kane, who departed Tottenham for Bayern Munich in a multi-million pound deal last year.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney has been described as keen on a move to Spurs, according to media outlets like talkSPORT, but it is Bournemouth forward Dominic Solanke making more headlines right now.

The former Liverpool striker, who scored 21 goals in 42 appearances across all competitions for Bournemouth last season, is a star player for the Cherries, and it would be a big blow for Andoni Iraola to lose him.

Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke.

Bournemouth may well be powerless if Spurs or any other club decide to trigger the £65 million release clause in his contract, but some media sources like TEAMtalk believe Tottenham chiefs think that they can do a deal for Solanke at around £60 million.

Postecoglou driving Tottenham move for Solanke

GiveMeSport have an update on the situation this week, and they claim Postecoglou is personally driving Tottenham's move for Solanke, who is believed to be open to this potential transfer.

GMS have different information to previous reports about his price tag, though, as Spurs apparently value Solanke at around £50 million – despite the player hitting double figures last season and still having three more years left on his contract.

The Lilywhites may well find themselves paying a higher fee than £50 million because of this, we believe, but it's clear as day why Tottenham are now very keen on the 26-year-old.

“He’s a dream," said ex-Bournemouth boss Gary O'Neil. "As a center forward, I think sometimes his work can go unnoticed because it's difficult to score goals at this level.

“But I'm so pleased he get his goal because you ask him to press, he presses, you ask him to do stuff in possession. He does it, he literally does everything he can. Probably the hardest working centre-forward I've ever seen."

Sky Sports: West Ham now in advanced talks to sign forward who Crouch loves

West Ham United have now opened talks to sign their latest attacking target, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

West Ham transfer rumours

The Irons have had a frustrating few weeks in the transfer window since making Max Kilman their third signing of the summer, with a number of potential deals falling through. Technical director Tim Steidten has been looking to grant Julen Lopetegui’s wish of bringing in a new right-back, a centre-back and a centre-forward before the deadline next month.

As we know, teenage winger Luis Guilherme, experienced goalkeeper Wes Foderingham and centre-back Kilman have all arrived, however, moves to sign Southampton right-back Kyle Walker-Peters and AC Milan centre-back Fikayo Tomori are thought to be off.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich right-back Noussair Mazraoui also doesn’t want to join the Hammers as well as Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo.

In attack, West Ham are yet to strike a deal for Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran, which led them to exploring a possible move for Borussia Dortmund forward Niclas Fullkrug, who has spent his entire playing career turning out for clubs in Germany. There has now been a new development regarding West Ham and Fullkrug after he emerged as a target.

West Ham open Niclas Fullkrug talks

According to Sheth, who took to X, West Ham have opened talks over a move to sign Fullkrug, who appears to be keen on moving to the Premier League, with those discussions now advancing.

Recently, the 31-year-old represented Germany at Euro 2024 and scored two goals in the competition as the hosts made the quarter-finals.

Prior to the tournament, he came in for plenty of praise from former striker Peter Crouch, who admitted he loves the Dortmund man after he enjoyed a brilliant debut campaign in 2023/24, scoring 12 goals and providing eight assists in 29 Bundesliga appearances in the 2023/24 campaign.

“I would have an outside bet at Fullkrug at Germany [for golden boot],” Crouch said. “I feel like he could be one of the players like Miroslav Klose where he just gets goals in major tournaments.

“I love him. He’s had a good season… He’ll go into it full of confidence. Germany are kind of going underneath the radar. They’re the host nation and I think he could be the main man. He’s maybe not as sexy a name as the [Kylian] Mbappes, Crisitiano Ronaldos and Harry Kanes, but I think he could go under the radar and get a good few goals.”

Meanwhile, Ally McCoist added: “I’m a fan of Niclas Fullkrug. Nothing wrong with an old-fashioned centre forward that can play. Every time I’ve seen Fullkrug, he’s impressed me. His game knowledge is good, his touch is excellent, he can finish, he’s aggressive… I think he’s a good player.”

Man Utd make contact to sign £600k-p/w midfielder; INEOS happy to pay £40m

Manchester United have made an approach to sign a £600,000-a-week midfielder, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe reportedly happy to pay up to £40m to complete a deal.

In regards to incomings, centre-back Leny Yoro and centre-forward Joshua Zirkzee have been the marquee arrivals, but more is still wanted at Old Trafford to bolster Erik ten Hag's squad.

For example, a double deal for Bayern Munich duo Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt is being worked on, and alongside the right-back and centre-back, a midfielder is also on the Old Trafford wishlist.

There have been plenty of rumours as to who that midfield addition could be, with Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte the most heavily linked target. There are also alternatives to Ugarte, with contact being made to Burnley’s Sander Berge, whereas talks have also been held for AS Monaco’s Youssouf Fofana.

Now, attention has turned back to a long-term target that United supporters will know all about.

Man Utd make Frenkie De Jong approach

According to Manchester World, Man Utd have made an approach to Barcelona over a deal for Frenkie de Jong. The Dutch midfielder was heavily linked with a move to work with Ten Hag during the 2022 transfer market, but as we know, a move never materialised.

Now, it looks as if the Red Devils could try again, with the report stating that ‘United have made a tentative approach to Barcelona in recent days to ascertain De Jong’s availability, with the Premier League side open to completing a deal if a fee around the £30m-£40m mark can be agreed’.

Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong

De Jong, on a whopping £600,000-a-week with the Catalan giants, has been with Barcelona since 2019 and has made more than 200 appearances for the club. Prior to that, De Jog was at Ajax, where he worked under Ten Hag, turning out 59 times under the current United boss. Ten Hag is a big fan of the current Barcelona star, saying last year:

"Frenkie is an incredible player and for every club in the whole world he will strengthen the squad because he has a unique quality. If you can get him in the squad your team will be stronger. In Spain he became even better. He's a fantastic player, plays out from the back, he always has time and it was a pleasure to work with him."

Who knows, a move this summer could finally come off, but for now, a tentative approach has been made, making this one to watch.

Usman Khawaja breaks century drought but pressure grows on Joe Burns

A batsman who looks increasingly under pressure for his Test place made a low score, one who is among the most prolific players in the world bagged a duck and two former Test batsmen filled their boots on the opening day at Glenelg.Usman Khawaja probably won’t come into consideration for Australia’s Test squad, and Matt Renshaw certainly won’t, but the former made his first century since February 2019 and the latter closed within touching distance of his first for two-and-a-half years.Joe Burns’ hold on the Test opening berth appears more tenuous by the day – across town Will Pucovski piled up another big hundred – as he fell for 10 in the sixth over, given caught behind via an inside edge although he did not seem thrilled by the decision.Marnus Labuschagne then bagged his second consecutive duck, walking into a wide delivery and edging to slip, to leave Queensland 2 for 11. Khawaja and Bryce Street added 128 for the third wicket followed by a 103-run partnership between Khawaja and Renshaw, before the day was capped by a boundary-studded half-century from Jimmy Peirson.Khawaja was the aggressor in Queensland’s early recovery as Street took 107 balls to reach double figures. Street had started to make progress when he fell to a stunning short leg catch by Henry Hunt who parried the ball up then held the rebound. That gave Lloyd Pope his lone success of the day but it was another tough outing for the legspinner who conceded a run-a-ball. Khawaja, especially, enjoyed his regular loose offerings while Renshaw did not miss out on many.Khawaja’s previous century had been his Test hundred against Sri Lanka in Canberra and he reached three figures off 149 balls against the first delivery of the evening session. He eventually fell to the deserving Wes Agar, edging to Callum Ferguson at first slip in his last first-class match, but Queensland rattled along in the final session which brought 159 runs in 38 overs.Peirson was largely responsible for that, hitting 48 off his 60 runs in boundaries, and the stand with Renshaw was unbroken on 89 on another tough day for the South Australia attack.

Hat-trick of wins puts Kings XI Punjab in front in clash of equals with Sunrisers Hyderabad

There’s little to separate the two teams on the points table, with their NRR putting SRH slightly ahead

Hemant Brar23-Oct-20207:44

Are Sunrisers missing a strike bowler?

Big pictureThe first half of IPL 2020 might not have been as closely fought as in some of the previous editions, but with no team completely out of the playoffs race yet, it has become competitive in the last few days. The Kings XI Punjab, who were languishing at the bottom of the points table much of the way, have beaten the top three teams in their last three outings. They will look to improve their playoff chances further on Sunday evening in Dubai, as will their opponents, the Sunrisers Hyderabad, who are coming off a confidence-boosting win over the Rajasthan Royals. Both sides would have been pleased at cantering to victories in their last games despite their big guns not performing. Nicholas Pooran helped the Kings XI chase down the Delhi Capitals’ 164 after they had lost KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal and Chris Gayle inside the powerplay. Then, on Thursday, Manish Pandey’s counter-attacking 83 not out took the Sunrisers home against the Royals after Jofra Archer had removed David Warner and Jonny Bairstow cheaply. The two sides are currently on eight points each after four wins from ten matches, but the winner of Saturday’s match can break into the top four, provided the Capitals beat the Kolkata Knight Riders in the earlier game on the same day.In the newsAn adductor (thigh) injury kept Kane Williamson out against the Royals. There has been no official word on his fitness, but even if he is fit, the Sunrisers might be tempted to stick with Jason Holder, who not only guarantees four overs with the ball but also strengthens their lower-middle order batting.Previous meetingBairstow smashed a 55-ball 97 at this very venue to take the Sunrisers to 201 for 6. In response, Pooran fought a lone battle, scoring 77 off 37 balls, with the next highest score being just 11. Rashid Khan picked up 3 for 12 as the Kings XI – bowled out for 132 in 16.5 overs – went on to lose by 69 runs.Manish Pandey punches gloves with Vijay Shankar•BCCILikely XIsKings XI Punjab: 1 KL Rahul (capt, wk), 2 Mayank Agarwal, 3 Chris Gayle, 4 Nicholas Pooran, 5 Glenn Maxwell, 6 Deepak Hooda, 7 James Neesham, 8 M Ashwin, 9 Ravi Bishnoi, 10 Mohammed Shami, 11 Arshdeep SinghSunrisers Hyderabad: 1 David Warner (capt), 2 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 3 Manish Pandey, 4 Vijay Shankar, 5 Priyam Garg, 6 Abdul Samad, 7 Jason Holder, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Shahbaz Nadeem, 10 Sandeep Sharma, 11 T NatarajanStrategy punts Khan has been the most successful bowler for the Sunrisers but the Kings XI have a counter for him in Gayle. Since 2018, Gayle averages 57.7 at a strike rate of 201 against legspin in the IPL. Against Khan, he has scored 79 runs in 45 balls in all T20s while being dismissed thrice. The only time Khan conceded over 50 in an IPL match was against the Kings XI in Mohali in 2018 when Gayle took him apart en route an unbeaten 104 off 63 balls. Meanwhile, Sandeep Sharma has got Gayle out four times in nine innings while conceding only 64 off 59 balls. It may be worth bringing on Sharma for an over when Gayle comes to the crease. Rahul has scored lots of runs this IPL but has managed only 115 from 117 balls against spinners while getting out thrice. The Sunrisers can employ Khan against him as the legspinner has got him out twice in four T20 innings while giving away only 16 runs off 24 balls.Stats that matter The Sunrisers dominate the head-to-head numbers with 11 wins from 15 matches. Teams batting first have won 12 out of the 18 games in Dubai this IPL. Khan’s best numbers are against the Kings XI: 14 wickets in seven innings at a strike rate of 12. Pooran’s 22 sixes are the most by a batsman so far in IPL 2020. In fact, he has more sixes to his name than fours (21). Overall also he has 198 fours and as many sixes in T20 cricket.
