Oman miss out on direct qualification to T20 World Cup

Decisive three-wicket hauls from Dominic Blampied and Elliot Miles denied Oman their fifth win in six group games, a result that would have helped them top Group B and seal direct qualification to the T20 World Cup.Later in the day it was confirmed that Ireland topped Group B on net run rate – the only way they wouldn’t have finished No. 1 was if UAE beat Canada by a gargantuan margin, or vice versa, and that didn’t happen.* Oman will now face Namibia in a qualifier, the winner of which will go through to the T20 World Cup. The loser will get another opportunity, in a second qualifier against Hong Kong.Earlier, Papua New Guinea had become the first team to seal an automatic berth by topping Group A.After electing to bowl, Oman had to contend with a brisk opening stand of 60 between Nick Ferraby and Nick Greenwood. But a menacing spell from Mohammad Nadeem – the medium-pacer took four wickets for a career-best haul – soon reduced Jersey to 79 for 4 and then 96 for 5. Jersey’s lower-middle order strung together only 45 in the last seven overs to lift them to 141 for 7.While Nadeem’s wicket burst was damage control, Blampied did the damage early on. In the second over of the chase, he dismissed Khawar Ali, Aqib Ilyas, and Aamir Kaleem to leave Oman 6 for 3. A 76-run stand between Jatinder Singh and Zeeshan Maqsood kept Oman in the hunt, however. The partnership had left Oman needing 60 off 48 balls to top the group. But Miles would then come in the way – he dismissed both Jatinder and Maqsood, who made 56 – and accounted for wicketkeeper Suraj Kumar in the middle as well. From 82 for 3, Oman slipped to 103 for 6 in the 17th over. The remaining runs were too much for the lower order to chase down. They will now have to compete in the qualifier playoffs round to try and go through to the T20 World Cup.

Spurs star who was ‘destroyed’ by Maddison on debut has become ‘titanic’

Anyone doubting Ange Postecoglou's ability to turn Tottenham Hotspur into a machine to compete against the Premier League's heavy hitters would have to concede that the progress made thus far certainly points toward an upward trajectory.

Before the summer, there was scant evidence that Spurs were headed anywhere close to a direction of promise, languishing to an eighth-placed finish after sacking Antonio Conte – the fourth managerial dismissal in as many years – in a series of mishaps that all-but-confirmed Harry Kane's summer sale.

Ange Postecoglou.

But now, 24 matches into the 2023/24 campaign and reclaiming a spot in the top four with a last-gasp victory over Brighton & Hove Albion, Spurs' credentials against outfits more cemented and established in their development underpin Postecoglou's exemplary work so far.

The 58-year-old has combined with chairman Daniel Levy to make some impactful transfers in the market, James Maddison and Micky van de Ven the summer standouts, while reviving some of the club's most talented players who had unquestionably fallen by the wayside last term – Heung-min Son, Cristian Romero, Dejan Kulusevski, stand up.

Spurs may already have a bigger talent than Bergvall in Maddison regen

The frustrating thing for Tottenham fans before the summer was that the squad was brimming with quality, and while Conte's tenure spiralled, one of his last acts in signing Pedro Porro will go down as an unmitigated success, the Spaniard performing as one of the Premier League's finest players this season.

Why Spurs signed Pedro Porro

It was January 2023 and Chelsea were on a transfer rampage, with Todd Boehly's spending spree welcoming fresh faces at Stamford Bridge with unrelenting conviction.

One player who didn't wind up at the club was Porro, who was at the centre of a transfer battle between Spurs and their London rivals, who were believed to have the lead in the race initially.

Tottenham prevailed on deadline day, completing a loan move for the Sporting Lisbon right-back with an obligation to buy for €45m (£40m) in the summer, with underperforming Matt Doherty transferring to Atletico Madrid at the same time after the London club agreed to terminate his contract.

A dynamic and multi-faceted wide defender, Porro had been hailed for his "sensational" performances in Portugal by analyst Zach Lowy and clearly boasted natural ability to propel him to the front of the Premier League, but he didn't hit the ground running.

First impressions of Pedro Porro at Spurs

Porro arrived with a weight of expectation after posting three goals and 11 assists for Sporting over the first half of the 2022/23 season, and while he forged some promising displays, the 24-year-old's spatial awareness and defensive acumen were called into question several times.

Indeed, Porro endured a debut to forget at the start of February, just over one year ago, against imperilled Leicester City, suffering at the centre of a 4-1 defeat that sparked the beginning of the club's seasonal demise.

While ex-Spurs manager Tim Sherwood's comments (video above) were inordinately scathing, it is interesting to see how Porro has adapted and grown from that initial misfire, especially given the pundit's declaration that he was "destroyed" by James Maddison, who then played for the Foxes.

Branded with a 4/10 match rating by correspondent Alasdair Gold, Porro was left-red-faced indeed, the journalist writing: 'A tough, nervy start to life in the Premier League with a poor first touch and then he was sold a dummy by Barnes which led to Bentancur getting booked. Chances to get forward were rare and he looked shaky at the back. He will hopefully adapt but this was not a debut to remember fondly.'

Clinching three goals and three assists apiece throughout the latter half of the Premier League season, the £85k-per-week ace did manage to show his offensive abilities but was found out defensively all too often, with pundit Jamie Carragher remarking that he "can't defend" after a particularly damaging 6-1 defeat against Newcastle United.

Postecoglou's summer appointment marked a fresh start, a new beginning, and it's one that Porro has grasped with both hands, thriving as one of the division's superlative full-backs.

Pedro Porro's season in numbers

Porro has been absolutely brilliant under Postecoglou's leadership, flying in with tackles, chipping in with assists and providing his peers with a constant outlet down the right flank, heralded for his "titanic" efforts by The Athletic's Charlie Eccleshare.

As per Sofascore, he has racked up seven assists from 23 matches in the English top-flight this season, creating ten big chances and averaging 1.7 key passes, 2.9 tackles, 2.5 clearances, 5.7 ball recoveries and 5.1 successful duels per game.

Shaping into the kind of rounded player that thrives at the highest level, Porro would stake a claim for a spot in the Premier League's team of the season, and should he continue to put him such stellar showings, leading Spurs back into the Champions League, it will be hard to ignore such efforts.

He ranks among the top 2% of full-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 5% for shot-creating actions, the top 17% for passes attempted, the top 12% for tackles and the top 2% for blocks made per 90, as per FBref, and has attracted the interest of Manchester City, who was on the club's books as a youngster.

There is a real sense that Porro is starting to grow into the player that captured Levy's attention over one year ago, and given that Tottenham tagged the Spain international at £100m in January to dissuade Pep Guardiola's lucrative outfit from moving ahead to re-sign the player, it's clear that he is among the most coveted assets.

Too often throughout the recent past have Tottenham's travails been littered with missteps and wistful memories of near achievements. That's changing under Postecoglou.

The dawn has barely broken, the first step of sunlight painting N17 in a new, luminous glow, but the cogs appear to be meshing together and now there is belief from the Spurs support that this craggy-faced Australian can lead the club to new heights.

There is a way to go before such lofty ambitions become something tangible but with stars such as Porro gracing the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, this might just be the new era fans have dreamt of for many years.

Liverpool have emerged as one of the contenders to sign Valencia and Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili this summer.

Liverpool eye move for MamardashviliWill compete with Newcastle for goalkeeper's signatureStarring for Georgia at Euro 2024WHAT HAPPENED?

Marca reports that the Reds could consider placing a bid for the custodian amid rumours of receiving a massive offer from Saudi Arabian clubs for Alisson. They will, however, face competition from fellow Premier League side Newcastle United who are being considered the favourites to land Mamardashvili.

The Magpies reportedly saw their first bid worth €25m (£21m/$26) for the Georgian get rejected by Valencia. They, however, are expected to place a second offer as they look determined to sign a quality goalkeeper in the ongoing summer transfer window.

DID YOU KNOW?

After appearing in 37 La Liga games for Vanelcia last season, the 23-year-old is now starring for his national team at the Euros. He has conceded just four goals in the group stage and managed to keep a clean sheet in Georgia's historic win over Portugal in their last game.

Wrexham star James McClean aims fresh criticism at 'overrated' £100m man Declan Rice after dismal England held to draw by Denmark at Euro 2024

Wrexham star James McClean says Declan Rice needs to do more as a "£100 million player", as England limped to a 1-1 draw with Denmark.

England draw 1-1 with DenmarkRice puts in lacklustre displayCriticised by Wrexham's McCleanWHAT HAPPENED?

The Three Lions came away with a point from their clash with the Danes on Thursday to inch closer to the last 16 of the Euros, but were wholly unconvincing with their performance. During the interval, former Republic of Ireland winger McClean said the 25-year-old, who cost Arsenal £105 million ($133m) last summer, needs to do more than just "sideways and backwards passes".

AdvertisementWHAT JAMES MCCLEAN SAID

He said on RTE Sport: "Denmark has won the midfield battle in that half. I made a comment yesterday (Wednesday) about Declan Rice, which people have got their knickers in a twist about, but for a £100 million player I want to see more than five-yard sideways and backwards passes. He attempted one forward pass in the half and it went straight into the keeper's hands. I want to see him do more, break lines, but in the midfield battle in the first half, Denmark won that very comfortably."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

This comes a day after the former West Brom man said the ex-West Ham midfielder was "overrated" and not a world-class player. While this criticism may stick in Rice's craw, the manner of the performance against Denmark will be a cause for concern. However, England are still top of the group and in pole position to reach the knockout stages of the competition.

Crystal Palace leading race for Osayi-Samuel ahead of Premier League rivals

Sitting six points clear of the relegation zone as we approach the halfway mark in the Premier League, Crystal Palace's status in the top flight is on course to remain intact for another season. As the campaign progresses, however, those at Selhurst Park will be hoping to see their side not only stay up but add some excitement to things under Roy Hodgson. And the January transfer window could help do exactly that.

Reports suggest that the Eagles are leading the way ahead of Premier League rivals to land one particular talent, who could help Hodgson's side take a crucial step towards the Premier League's top half.

Crystal Palace transfer news

Speaking on the potential of January arrivals, Hodgson told the official Crystal Palace website:

“In the situation, we find ourselves in, in the wrong end of the table – we’re not in the top half, we are that in that bottom half of the table – I don’t think there’d be many teams who are not looking at the January transfer window and saying it would be good if we could bring in a couple of players who will strengthen us, either as a player to go directly in the team or as a player to help us in the squad.

“We’re in that group, but it is easier said than done. I think when you are assessing it, one does have to always bear in mind what bringing in a senior player in a certain position will do to one or two of the younger ones that you are actually now quite keen to see given a chance and weigh up how much these people are going to play a part and help you.”

That said, according to TeamTalk, Crystal Palace are leading the race to Fenerbahce right-back Bright Osayi-Samuel ahead of both Championship side Leeds United and Premier League relegation rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers. The full-back, who has impressed Selhurst Park chiefs, left Queens Park Rangers in 2021 and has improved more and more ever since to attract the interest of those in the Premier League. Palace chiefs reportedly hope to get him for a cut-price next year, given that his current contract expires in 2025.

"Outstanding" Osayi-Samuel could be ready for England return

After picking up experience on the European stage and in Turkey's top flight at Fenerbahce, Osayi-Samuel could be more than ready to step into a Premier League side. Osayi-Samuel's stats this season, compared to Nathaniel Clyne's, for example, show the upgrade that Palace could be getting.

Before Fenerbahce, however, the right-back earned plenty of praise at QPR, including from former manager Mark Warburton, who said:

"Bright came off because we've got to look after the young players. I've never been booed at 6-0 before I've got to say. These demands, you can't be playing 21st, 26th, 29th, 1st, 4th or 5th whatever it might be without injury and fatigue. If you lose those boys for four to six-week injuries, you can't afford to do that. Today he was outstanding and deserved the applause."

When the January transfer window opens, Palace could make their move and add a much-needed improvement to a side aiming to move away from the threat of relegation even further, making this one to keep an eye on.

Wolves eyeing move to sign "intelligent" Vimal Yoganathan ahead of rivals

Some may have worried for Wolverhampton Wanderers when Julen Lopetegui left at the end of pre-season, but the arrival of Gary O'Neil quickly put an end to any concerns. The former Bournemouth boss has eased any relegation fears so far this season and has the Midlands club sitting comfortably in mid-table.

Now, he could get the opportunity to welcome some January reinforcements, which could see his side take things up a level or two. Reports suggest that Wolves could also have an eye on the summer transfer window, however, with the chance to sign one particular League One gem who has attracted interest from a number of Premier League sides.

Wolves transfer news

Given how late O'Neil arrived, he didn't quite get the chance to make his mark on the Wolves squad during the summer transfer window, meaning that January and next summer could be crucial windows for his tenure. Whilst the manager's immediate attention could be on keeping the Midlands club in the Premier League, he may help them on their way to returning to the top half of England's top flight with the right additions, which could include one potential future star next summer.

According to Will Unwin of The Guardian, Wolves are monitoring Barnsley youngster Vimal Yoganathan ahead of a possible move, alongside Brentford, Bournemouth and Championship side Southampton. All four clubs have their eye on the 17-year-old, who also reportedly has a professional deal on the table at Barnsley.

If Yoganathan fails to sign a professional contract at the League One side, then he could leave on a cut-price deal upon the expiry of his current deal during the summer transfer window. That could then see the likes of Wolves swoop in and land the former Liverpool academy man ahead of Premier League rivals Brentford and Bournemouth.

Wolves would be wise to sign "intelligent" Yoganathan

If Wolves want to avoid future relegation battles, then ensuring that they've got young talent with the potential to step into O'Neil's side could be the key in the long run. Those at Molineux have seen the likes of Pedro Neto and Max Kilman grow into top Premier League options in the last few years and will now be looking to find their next star man. And that may well be Yoganathan.

Max Kilman

The central midfielder has already earned some minutes for Barnsley's first team this season, making appearances in the FA Cup and EFL Cup as well as playing in the EFL Trophy. At 17 years of age, the only way could be up for Yoganathan, whether that be at his current club or, indeed, Wolves or elsewhere in English football. Certainly rated highly by those at Barnsley, former player Bobby Hassell was full of praise for Yoganathan back in April, saying: “He’s had a really good season. He’s six foot three but needs to get stronger. He loves a tackle, is an intelligent player and can score goals.”

With that said, whilst Wolves' focus will be on the current task at hand – maintaining their Premier League status – those at the club could have one eye on Yoganathan's progress at Barnsley ahead of a potential move, making this one to watch.
