Andhra slipped in pursuit of maiden semi-final berth; Saurashtra bowed down in innings defeat
Shashank Kishore26-Feb-2024 • Updated on 27-Feb-2024Vidarbha progressed to the Ranji Trophy semi-final with a resounding 127-run win over Karnataka in Nagpur, where they will meet Madhya Pradesh.Victory was achieved courtesy an outstanding spell of left-arm spin bowling early on the final day by Aditya Sarwate. The two-time Ranji winner picked up the key wickets of Mayank Agarwal and Manish Pandey early to hasten Karnataka’s meltdown. He ended with figures of 4 for 78 to take his match haul to seven wickets.Karnataka began the day with dreams of a heist. At 103 for 1, they needed a further 268 runs. There was hope because Agarwal had battled superbly late on the fourth day during his 101-run opening stand with R Samarth, but he fell for 70, tamely chipping one to mid-on after being deceived in flight.Nikin Jose, who top scored with 83 in the first innings, fell two balls later for a duck, and Pandey was out lbw by an arm-ball that skidded through to crash into the pad. From 127 for 1, Karnataka slipped quickly to 131 for 4.Seeing the amount of turn on offer on a final-day surface, Vidarbha then turned to Harsh Dubey’s left-arm spin, and he removed Hardik Raj after a brief 40-run partnership with KV Aneesh. Replays however seemed to suggest the ball may have missed leg.The lower-order collapsed without a fight, with two run-outs further rubbing salt into Karnataka’s wounds. Right towards the end, Vyshak Vijaykumar and Vidwath Kaverappa swung their way to cameos that only reduced to margin of defeat.Karnataka were always up against it right from when they were bowled out for 286 to concede a 174-run lead. The cushion meant Vidarbha had the edge even though they collapsed to 196 all out in their second innings, with Kaverappa triggering the slide with an inspired spell with the old ball on either side of tea on the third day. He took 6 for 61.Dhruv Shorey, Vidarbha’s Delhi import, top scored with 57 in the second innings, while their first-innings effort was headlined by Atharva Taide’s 107 and Karun Nair’s 90. Taide’s runs will be all the more pleasing for the management considering they will need to find a strong opening combination following Faiz Fazal’s retirement after a two-decade-long first-class career.Vidarbha will now run into MP, a familiar opponent with a familiar coach – Chandrakant Pandit – who guided them to back-to-back titles in 2017-18 and 2018-19.

Madhya Pradesh knock Andhra out in thrillerThe Madhya Pradesh player break into wild celebrations after their thrilling win•MPCAIn a game that wildly swung both ways in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, champions of 2021-22, held their nerve to inflict heartbreak on Andhra to enter the Ranji Trophy semi-finals. Playing a key role in their defence of 170 was fast bowler Anubhav Agarwal, who picked up career-best figures of 6 for 52 as Andhra were bowled out for 165 while chasing 170.Andhra’s dreams of a maiden semi-final berth looked possible at 112 for 4, before Agarwal cracked opened the game with wickets in consecutive overs. He first had Karan Shinde lbw and then dismissed Hanuma Vihari, the captain, caught behind. Until then, Vihari had looked assured in defence to make a stonewalling 55 off 136 balls. When Agarwal dismissed Shoaib Khan for a first-ball duck, Andhra were 118 for 7, still 52 away.Ashwin Hebbar, the allrounder, kept fighting and added 32 for the ninth wicket with fast bowler Girinath Reddy. The pair batted out 13 overs to frustrate MP before Agarwal returned to dismiss Girinath. The final wicket was picked up by their new import, Kulwant Khejroliya, the left-arm fast bowler, when he dismissed Hebbar for 22 as MP pulled off a heist that looked a tad difficult when they were shot out for 107 in the second innings. That total, as modest as it may seem, was only possible because Himanshu Mantri, the wicketkeeper, batted with tremendous grit to score 43. In the overall context, his scores of 49 and 43 in the match were massively significant, even though Agarwal was named Player of the Match for his haul of 9 for 85.Andhra would reflect upon several moments where they seemed to have the upper hand, only to let it slip. In the first innings, they bundled out MP for 234, but couldn’t capitalise with the bat as they fell behind by 62 runs. Then they came storming back through Nitish Reddy and KV Sasikanth, who picked up seven wickets between them, as MP were skittled for 107, before they collapsed in the second innings again.

Sai Kishore spins Tamil Nadu to semiR Sai Kishore took nine wickets and made 60 runs in the game•PTI R Sai Kishore picked up a match haul of 9 for 93 along with a combative half-century in the first innings to help Tamil Nadu trounce defending champions Saurashtra, the defending champions, by an innings and 33 runs. Their quarter-final win in Coimbatore now gives TN their first semi-final entry since 2016-17.Sai Kishore, with impressive numbers of 47 wickets at an average of 18.78, rose to the top of the wickets tally for the season. He has also managed two half-centuries with the bat.It was his exploits with the ball that made a massive difference in the semi-final though. He picked up 5 got 66 to restrict Saurashtra to 183 in the first innings, 83 of those by Harvik Desai.TN were wobbling at 134 for 4 when Sai Kishore was dismissed. However, Baba Indrajith and Boopathi Kumar, in only his maiden first-class season, hit half-centuries during a 119-run stand and powered TN into the lead. Key contributions from the lower order then gave them a 155-run cushion.Saurashtra’s second innings started poorly as they were reduced to 20 for 2 courtesy fast bowler Sandeep Warrier. Cheteshwar Pujara held the innings together briefly to top score with 46, but Sai Kishore ran rampant again, and when Pujara became the eighth batter to be dismissed, an innings defeat was inevitable.

Deshpande, Kotian tons deflate BarodaTushar Deshpande and Tanush Kotian, batting at Nos. 11 and 10 for Mumbai, scored centuries•PTI Mumbai marched into the Ranji semi-finals after Baroda fell apart in the third innings of a game that was on an even keel for three days. For the record, the game ended in a draw with Mumbai progressing on the basis of a first-innings lead. Up next in their path is Tamil Nadu, who’ve made their first semi-final since 2016-17.Having made 384, Mumbai saw Baroda mount a serious challenge as they serenely progressed to 239 for 2, as captain Vishnu Solanki and Shashwat Rawat hit hundreds. But just with a first-innings lead looming, they collapsed as Mumbai’s spinners took control.Shams Mulani, Tanush Kotian and Musheer Khan, who struck an unbeaten double century in the first innings, picked up seven wickets between them as Baroda were bowled out for 348.Having pocketed a 36-run lead, Mumbai were in trouble at different stages. At 214 for 5, with the lead still within grasp, Baroda sniffed a slim chance of a win. And then they blew it.From 339 for 9, they saw Tushar Deshpande and Kotian add 232 for the tenth wicket, the second-highest for the 10th wicket in Ranji Trophy history behind Ajay Sharma and Maninder Singh’s 233-run partnership vs Bombay in 1991-92 semi-final.Deshpande made 123, the highest by an Indian No. 11 in first-class cricket, surpassing Shute Banerjee’s 121 against Surrey in 1946. During the course of their record stand, Kotian and Deshpande became only the second Nos. 10 and 11 to score 100s in the same first-class innings, after Chandu Sarwate 124* and Banerjee 121 for Indians vs Surrey in 1946.All this allowed Mumbai to ransack 569 before they were bowled out on the fifth morning, which reduced the result to a mere formality. The captains shook hands after tea with Baroda on 121 for 3.

Amol Muzumdar, the former Mumbai batter, has been named head coach of the India women’s national team.”This is a huge responsibility and I look forward to working closely with talented players and providing them with the right preparation and guidance to excel,” Muzumdar said in a BCCI statement. “The next two years are extremely important as two World Cups are scheduled in the period. Together with the coaching and support staff, we will look to tick every box and give ourselves the best chance to succeed.”The statement added that the three-member cricket advisory committee of the BCCI had interviewed the shortlisted applicants for the position and unanimously recommended Muzumdar for the role. The position had been vacant since December 2022, when Ramesh Powar was abruptly removed as part of BCCI’s “restructuring module” two months ahead of the T20 World Cup in South Africa. Since then, Hrishikesh Kanitkar has been in the top job in an interim capacity, overseeing the team for the home T20I series against Australia in December last year, the tri-series in South Africa, the T20 World Cup earlier this year as well as the Asian Games, in which India won the gold medal, in September. Former India bowler Nooshin Al Khadeer was the interim head coach during the white-ball tour of Bangladesh in July.Muzumdar has been an active coach since he called time on a 21-year first-class career during which he became one of the highest run-getters in the Ranji Trophy. He went on to win eight Ranji Trophy titles with Mumbai. After his retirement, he has coached age-group sides at the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy, has been at the helm for Mumbai, and has been part of the coaching staff at Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, and with South Africa during their tour of India in 2019.
Wharton fifty drives hosts but low-key feel to contest after ECB points deduction
ECB Reporters Network03-Sep-2023Derbyshire all-rounder Anuj Dal impressed with five for 72 during a hard-fought opening day of their LV= Insurance County Championship clash with Yorkshire at Scarborough.Dal’s 20 overs of medium pace limited Yorkshire to 297 after they had been inserted in a low-key Division Two affair. While Yorkshire are bottom of Division Two and definitely out of the promotion race, Derbyshire are just about still alive. But it would take something remarkable to secure a top-two finish given they are 52 points adrift with four games remaining.Dal’s third career five-wicket haul – his second in the Championship this season – stood out during a day which saw a number of Yorkshire batters fail to make the most of encouraging starts on a pitch not as pacy as is usual at North Marine Road.James Wharton top-scored with a middle-order 58, but Fin Bean and Jonny Tattersall both fell in the forties. Derbyshire then reached close at 47 for one from 17 overs. For large parts, the cricket meandered in front of a subdued crowd in the Scarborough sunshine, interspersed by regular wickets for 27-year-old Dal.Yorkshire’s openers Bean and Adam Lyth confidently shared 59 inside 20 overs. But both left-handers were lbw stuck on the crease to Dal either side of lunch. Lyth fell for 32 and then Bean for 41.When the latter fell six balls into the afternoon, Yorkshire were 98 for three after 30 overs. Home captain, and last year’s prolific Derbyshire overseas player, Shan Masood had also been caught behind cutting at Sam Conners for eight just before lunch. After an opening half-century stand, Derbyshire did well to limit Yorkshire.Their fourth success came when the battle of the Georges was won by tall quick Scrimshaw, getting Hill feathering behind for 11 at 129 for four in the 41st over. For Yorkshire, this final month was always going to be about signs of progress ahead of next year’s promotion push after July’s 48-point deduction sunk them to the bottom of Division Two. So for someone such as 22-year-old Wharton to contribute will encourage significantly. He has reached fifty in all formats this year – his breakthrough campaign – including a blistering Vitality Blast 111 against Worcestershire in June. The pace of this innings was vastly different, but there were signs of dominance as he and Tattersall shared 71 for the fifth wicket through the afternoon.Wharton hammered a pull through midwicket off Conners and shimmied down the pitch to work off-spinner Alex Thomson wide of mid-on for four more. The latter took him to his second Championship fifty, off 102 balls. By that time, Yorkshire were closing in on 200. But when they reached that mark, Wharton fell as he edged a drive at Dal behind in the 61st.That was the first of two identical dismissals in successive Dal overs. When Matthew Revis was caught behind aiming an expansive drive like Wharton had, Yorkshire were 204 for six in the 63rd. Dal’s fifth wicket came in the first over of the evening having earlier removed Bean in the opening over of the afternoon. This time, Tattersall fell caught behind driving for 45, leaving Yorkshire 213 for seven in the 65th.Mitch Wagstaff took a stunner of a gully catch head high to help Scrimshaw remove Dom Bess shortly afterwards before Jordan Thompson and Matthew Fisher both hit sixes over long-on off Thomson’s spin to push Yorkshire up towards 300.The hosts narrowly missed out on that, but Fisher hit six leg-side fours in eight balls he faced from Scrimshaw, including four in an over, en-route to 37 not out off 22 balls.Thompson made 32 before miscuing a catch off Thomson. Scrimshaw then wrapped up the innings by getting Ben Coad caught behind.Coad then struck early in Derbyshire’s reply, but the departure of Harry Came was due to Tattersall’s brilliance behind the stumps as he completed a one-handed diving catch down leg – nought for one in the third over.Left-handed Wagstaff then confidently ensured there were no further dramas, closing with an unbeaten 32.
Celtic have never been a club to shy away from cashing in on their best players and attempting to replace them in the transfer market over the years.
The Hoops have an excellent track record of selling stars for big-money and being able to find excellent replacements for them with bargain deals for young talent.

As you can see in the table above, Celtic have made some significant sales, particularly in recent years with Jota and Matt O’Riley, but they have always managed to find the next star to step up.
Last summer, Brendan Rodgers had to watch on as Brighton & Hove Albion secured a deal to sign O’Riley for more than £25m, but that money allowed the club to go and splash the cash on his replacement.
The Scottish Premiership giants reportedly smashed their club-record transfer fee to sign Belgium international Arne Engels from Augsburg for a fee of £11m.
Celtic have hit the jackpot with Arne Engels
It was a big gamble to spend that kind of money on a player who had yet to enjoy a proper breakthrough season at senior level as a consistent starter.
During his time with Augsburg, Engels never started more than 18 games in a single league season and only started 13 of his 32 appearances in the Bundesliga during the 2023/24 campaign.
This meant that Celtic were gambling on him being able to hit the ground running with the drop from one of Europe’s major leagues to the Premiership, and that gamble has paid off.
Engels has racked up ten goals and 12 assists in 43 appearances for the Scottish giants in all competitions, establishing himself as a regular starter in the middle of the park.

As you can see in the table above, playing in the Premiership has allowed Engels to showcase the best of his qualities in possession, providing a far greater threat at the top end of the pitch from a central midfield position.
This shows that the Hoops hit the jackpot by signing the Belgium international for £11m last summer, because their gamble has paid off and they now have a terrific, young, midfield player for years to come.
Celtic could, now, repeat the masterclass they have played with the 21-year-old maestro by swooping to sign one of his former teammates, Elvis Rexhbecaj.
Celtic make contact to sign Bundesliga ace
According to Fussball Transfers, the Scottish Premiership leaders are one of a number of clubs eyeing up a deal to sign the Augsburg central midfielder at the end of the season.
The summer transfer window is only a few months away from officially opening for business and the Hoops have seemingly already put plans in motion to bolster their squad ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
Fussball Transfers claims that Rexhbecaj is contemplating his options ahead of the summer transfer window, as he is torn between staying at Augsburg and trying a new adventure abroad.
The report states that Celtic, Parma, and Besiktas have all made enquiries about a potential deal to sign the Kosovo international this year, and that they are all ‘knocking on the door’ to land his signature.
Transfer Focus
Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.
It also reveals that Augsburg have been trying to extend his contract, which is due to expire in the summer of 2026, but have not been able to reach an agreement with the 27-year-old star.
Valued at £3m by Transfermarkt, Celtic must now continue to pursue a deal for the experienced midfield ace to bolster their squad, as he could be a repeat of Arne Engels at Parkhead.
Why Elvis Rexhbecaj could be Arne Engels 2.0
The Kosovo international could come in and be a quality addition to the group because his performance levels could increase as a result of the drop down to the Premiership from the Bundesliga, as was the case with his former teammate.
He is already, as aforementioned, an international player and Rexhbecaj showcased his tenacity out of possession and his composure and quality on the ball in the space of a few seconds when he scored his first goal for Kosovo against Iceland last week, as shown in the clip below.
The box-to-box midfield star, who has racked up 179 appearances in the Bundesliga throughout his career, is not known for his goalscoring, though, as he is more of a combative operator in the middle of the park.
Unlike Engels last season, the experienced ace has also been a regular starter for Augsburg in the Bundesliga this term – starting all 20 of his appearances in the division.

As you can see in the table above, they offered a fairly similar threat at the top end of the pitch but the Kosovan maestro was significantly more impressive out of possession.
The Celtic transfer target, who has made 2.0 tackles and interceptions and 3.8 ball recoveries per game in the current Bundesliga campaign, is a midfielder who can offer defensive security whilst also chipping in with the odd goal contribution.
If Engels’ attacking contributions can soar the way they did after his move to Parkhead, Rexhbecaj could enjoy a similar jump in his performances to deliver brilliant box-to-box midfield displays.

Therefore, the Kosovo international could be Engels 2.0 as another Augsburg central midfielder to come over from the Bundesliga to strut their stuff in Glasgow.
Like coach Sammy, captain Shai Hope was also scathing in his assessment of West Indies’ fielding against Zimbabwe
Deivarayan Muthu24-Jun-2023West Indies’ head coach Daren Sammy has pulled up his fielders for their sloppy effort that let Zimbabwe off the hook and set their side up for a heartbreaking defeat in Harare.West Indies dropped Sikandar Raza twice, first on 1 and then on 7, with the batter taking advantage of those reprieves to become the top scorer in the game with 68 off 58 balls. In all, West Indies shelled four catches; Alzarri Joseph was responsible for creating three of those chances.”Extremely disappointed. At the toss, we got to do what we wanted to do, which is to bowl first,” Sammy said at his post-match press conference. “Look, if we continue to display this type of fielding – we’ve spoken about it for the last few games – and if you keep giving the opposition’s best batters chances, eventually the cricket gods will catch up with you.Related

“And it did with us today, but [a target of] 269 on that surface… Again, these are the things we’re trying to change. We’ve seen it happen in the past before and the direction that I want this team to move forward…Today was really poor and it’s about taking responsibility and we didn’t do that today. And hence we didn’t deserve to win at all today.”Captain Shai Hope was also quite scathing in his assessment of West Indies’ fielding after they crashed to a 35-run defeat.”To be honest, too much is on my mind right now,” Hope said at the post-match presentation. “I don’t know if I can explain it but [there is] certainly a lot of hurt and disappointment. But the tournament is not over as yet. Catches: plain and simple. We created chances. We always ask the bowlers to create chances and they’re just doing that but we’re not supporting them in the field like we should and then with the bat again. Like I said, if we had 260 to chase before the day’s start, we would’ve been happy with that.”
“I tell them, who wants to get a ticket has to come and buy that ticket at the ticket office. At the moment, some of us are not buying that ticket for that train to move on.”Coach Daren Sammy wants more from his side
West Indies were among the pre-tournament favourites to qualify for the World Cup in India along with Sri Lanka, but their defeat to Zimbabwe has now jeopardised their chances of progressing to the main event later this year. West Indies dropped two points, which they could’ve carried forward to the Super Sixes (two points are carried forward for each win against other teams that qualify from your group – Zimbabwe and Netherlands in West Indies’ case), but Sammy insisted that it wasn’t the end of the road yet.”I wouldn’t say it hampers [our qualification] but it makes it more difficult,” Sammy said. “You’d love to go into the Super Six with four points. We knew from the time we left home that this game would’ve been very important to us. And again, like I said, the way we’ve played… I kept telling the guys that we kept on winning games [by] not playing our best cricket. Today again, we asked so much of ourselves. When you put on a display of fielding like this and then you get yourself in a good position and take the game for granted, the cricket gods will make you pay and that’s exactly what I’m going to tell them in the dressing room. We did not deserve to win, and we did not play to win today and now we have a lot of work to do – firstly to get to the Super Six and take on the other teams that we face.”We’ve made our road to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 a bit more difficult, but I don’t give up on anything. I’ll keep encouraging the boys and challenging them to be better because the trend I’ve started here is going to be moving. And I tell them, who wants to get a ticket has to come and buy that ticket at the ticket office. At the moment, some of us are not buying that ticket for that train to move on.”Daren Sammy: ‘No time to cry and think about loss to Zimbabwe too much’So, how can West Indies move on from this chastening defeat and prepare for the vital clash against Netherlands, who have also made it to the Super Sixes, on Monday?”Probably best to have the day off tomorrow, to be honest, to throw everything out and we need to get it out of our systems,” Hope said. “And then come hard again come Monday because we know we have our work cut out for ourselves now and know exactly what is required.”Sammy also backed West Indies to get their mission back on track against Netherlands. “We have to be in that game as quickly as possible. I’m thinking about how I’m going to approach the guys in the dressing room,” he said. “But look, there’s no time to cry and think about it too much. We got to get our positive mindset and game face on and do it again on Monday.”Monday becomes very important for us and we will look at the squad and combination and we will come up with the best one to go out and win the game. We will not take this [Zimbabwe] victory as the end of the road. I have a strong feeling that this West Indies team will bounce back. Sometimes, you just need a good wake-up call to make you understand and appreciate the opportunity we have here.”
Liverpool are now keen on signing an “incredible” forward, who has been identified as the ideal replacement for Luis Diaz, and they could hold a major advantage over Barcelona in the race for his signature, according to a report.
Diaz's Liverpool future in doubt
Diaz has been a regular starter for the Reds this season, and the winger has been impressive in front of goal, scoring 13 goals in 39 games in all competitions. However, his future is in doubt beyond the end of the campaign.
The 28-year-old is out of contract in 2027, and he has now started to attract interest from Chelsea and Barcelona, but the Merseyside club are not willing to let him go on the cheap, and would be looking to receive a fee of at least £67m.
Slot has told Liverpool he wants £50m target to replace "fantastic" player
Arne Slot isn’t messing about when it comes to Liverpool’s transfer priorities.
BySean Markus Clifford Mar 6, 2025
Arne Slot’s side have now started to look at potential replacements for the former FC Porto man, and a report from Spain has revealed AC Milan’s Rafael Leao has emerged as a target, with the winger viewed as the ideal Diaz heir.
Leao’s versatility, in being able to play on both wings and through the middle, makes him an attractive option for the Reds, and he has regularly provided goals and assists for Milan this season.
AC Milan's RafaelLeaobefore the match
As such, Liverpool believe the Portugal international could fit perfectly into Slot’s system, but there may be stiff competition for his signature, given that Barcelona are also known to be interested.
However, the Premier League leaders are in a far stronger position than Barca financially, which will give them an advantage in the transfer battle.
"Incredible" Leao could be the perfect Diaz replacement
Of course, Slot will be hoping Diaz opts to remain at Anfield in the summer, given the major role the forward has played in the Premier League title push, and the impact he’s made ever since arriving from Porto.

The Colombia international’s attacking output indicates he is developing year-on-year, but if he decides to move on this summer, Leao could be an excellent replacement.
Lauded as “incredible” by Fabrizio Romano, the Milan star has been his side’s most consistent performer in the Serie A this term, picking up six goals and six assists, with four goal contributions in his last five games.
With Darwin Núñez’s future in doubt, Slot may also want to bring in a forward capable of playing at striker, and the former Lille man fits the bill in that regard, amassing 23 goals and seven assists when fielded at centre-forward.
The only potential stumbling block could be the huge price tag, with recent reports revealing Milan could look to hold out for £83m, and his stock will only continue to rise if his performances stay at their current level.

Trailing after a north London defeat last month, Arne Slot knew that his side had to impress themselves on the shaky Spurs backline from the offing, and were duly rewarded for their pressure when Cody Gakpo broke the stubborn resistance after the half-hour mark.
Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah celebrate for Liverpool
Mohamed Salah added to his greedy haul with another goal and another assist, but Liverpool’s high-flying Dutchman is really shaping into some player.
Cody Gakpo's performance vs Spurs
Gakpo started the Slot era on the bench, entering the fray in the Premier League off the bench for the first six outings of the campaign.
Cody Gakpo in action for Liverpool
He’s now bagged in seven successive Anfield appearances across all competitions and has been Liverpool’s main man in the Carabao Cup for the second successive season. The 25-year-old’s cool strike to open the scoring took his tally to 16 this season.
Slot has got the best out of Gakpo, recognising his countryman’s flair and keen-edged ability when playing off the left flank, thus keeping him there and reaping the rewards.
Gakpo has faced his detractors since leaving PSV Eindhoven and moving to Merseyside in January 2023, with Jamie Carragher even taking to X (formerly Twitter) last season to comment that he “plays like the game is in slow motion.”
Gakpo is not the speediest runner and at times looked disjointed under Jurgen Klopp as his dynamism saw him shoehorned in various positions across the field, but it’s clear to see that now, with a recognised and thriving role, he’s become one of the finest forwards across the continent.
However, Gakpo’s not the only recent recruit to have proved the Sky Sports pundit wrong, with Dominik Szoboszlai impeccable as the midfield engine.
Dominik Szoboszlai has proved Carragher wrong
Szoboszlai is just completely indefatigable. He overwhelmed a struggling Tottenham side with his energy and exuberance behind Darwin Nunez, chipping in defensively and putting in the perfect all-encompassing effort.

It was only a matter of days ago that Carragher remarked that he’s “not Szoboszlai’s biggest fan,” acknowledging his athleticism but criticising his lack of potency in front of goal.
There’s some degree of truth to this argument. Since Szoboszlai joined from RB Leipzig in July 2023 for a £60m fee, he’s posted 12 goals and nine assists across 76 matches, a contribution rate of 0.28 per game.
But he’s an unsung hero of sorts, supercharging this unstoppable Liverpool force and giving rise to Salah and Gakpo’s terrific goalscoring ability.
The Liverpool Echo’s Ian Doyle awarded the Hungary skipper – who notably won seven duels on the night – with an 8/10 match rating and hailed him for his energy, leading the press.
Performance in Numbers
An integral part of the team, Szoboszlai is silencing his critics, Carragher among them.
Worth more than Salah: Liverpool must rue offloading their own Kvara for £0
Had things been different, Liverpool might not have needed to register an interest in PSG’s prized recruit.
