"World-class" Liverpool hero now linked with shock move to European giants

A "world-class" Liverpool superstar has been linked with a shock move away from Anfield in the near future, with a fresh claim suggesting as much.

Big Liverpool players could leave

The Reds have gone into the final international break full of confidence, with Sunday's 3-0 win at home to Brentford seeing them jump into second place in the Premier League table. There is only one point separating Jurgen Klopp's side and leaders Manchester City, ahead of what is a monumental clash at the Etihad on November 25th, with an exciting title race in prospect.

So far this season, many of Liverpool's most high-profile players have stood tall and performed superbly, whether it be Alisson in goal, captain Virgil van Dijk at the back, or Mohamed Salah further forward. Salah has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, however, after a £150m bid from Al-Ittihad was rejected in the summer transfer window, while Thiago is another big name who could leave the Reds, with Inter Milan keen on signing him in 2024.

Now, a new transfer report suggests that another of Liverpool's star figures could be of interest, in what represents a concerning update.

Trent Alexander-Arnold transfer update

According to a report from Spain, Real Madrid are eyeing a big-money move for Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold, seeing him as a great option to bring in as Dani Carvajal's successor at right-back.

ryan-kent-trent-alexander-arnold-liverpool-opinion

The La Liga giants are willing to pay more than €80m (£70m) for the services of the 25-year-old, and while manager Carlo Ancelotti could leave at the end of the season, he would still help get a deal over the line for the Reds ace.

Madrid appear to be building another special team of world-renowned players, with Jude Bellingham coming in and Kylian Mbappe potentially arriving next year, and it looks as though Alexander-Arnold is the player they have earmarked for that right-back spot.

While clearly a worrying update from a Liverpool perspective, their brilliant homegrown star may not want to leave his boyhood club at this point, and the Reds should be demanding far more for his services than £70m. Alexander-Arnold is one of the most gifted players to have ever emerged from the Merseysiders' academy, and he has grown into a genuinely elite player, producing levels of creativity from right-back that few have produced from that position in history.

In fact, Alexander-Arnold's numbers throughout his career sum up just how special he is, not to mention winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and EFL Cup, among other trophies.

Former Reds midfielder Lucas Leiva has described him as "world-class", such is his ability, and the fact that he is still only 25 years of age means that he has a big chunk of his career ahead of him. Alexander-Arnold is simply too special a talent to let go at the peak of his powers, and while some of his defensive work could possibly still be improved, this is someone who may well be a key man for another decade, quite possibly taking over the captaincy from Van Dijk one day.

As bad as Vicario: Spurs dud who lost the ball 23 times must be dropped

Tottenham Hotspur’s inconsistent form came back to bite them on Sunday afternoon.

Despite going into their Premier League game away to Nottingham Forest off the back of a draw away to Newcastle United and a win at home to Brentford, Thomas Frank’s side looked second-best from the first minute to the last.

The North Londoners were unable to keep the hosts at bay, unable to create decent chances for themselves and generally looked bereft of ideas.

There were poor performers wherever you looked for Spurs, but two really stood out, one of which was Guglielmo Vicario.

Vicario's poor performance vs Forest

Vicario is a particularly frustrating goalkeeper: in one game, he can look like one of the best in the league, pulling off sensational saves, and the next game, he can look like one of the worst.

Unfortunately for Frank and Co, Sunday’s match against Forest most certainly fell into the latter category.

For example, while he is not entirely blameless for the first goal, most of the blame for the hosts’ second should fall at his feet.

If the Italian were better positioned for Callum Hudson-Odoi’s audacious effort, then it would have been a relatively straightforward stop, and the Lilywhites would’ve still been in the game.

Unfortunately, the former Empoli man got it all wrong, and while he made some saves after the fact, it was too little too late.

It wasn’t just his shot-stopping that was poor either, as in 96 minutes of action, the 29-year-old completed just 21 of 31 passes, was accurate in just three of his 12 attempted long balls and managed to lose the ball ten times despite taking just 39 touches.

In all, it was a truly terrible showing from Vicario, but while the media are mainly focusing on him, one of his teammates was arguably just as bad.

The Spurs dud who was as bad as Vicario

The bad news for Frank and Spurs fans is that you could realistically make the case for any number of players being the worst on Sunday, from Richalison to Mohammed Kudus and even Micky Van de Ven.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, when it comes to the outfield player who was as disappointing and as detrimental to the side as Vicario, it is impossible to look past Pedro Porro.

The Spanish full-back is enormously talented, and at his best can be far more of an attacking outlet than most others in his position.

Unfortunately, he’s not been anywhere near his best for some time, and was arguably at his worst on Sunday.

The former Sporting CP was entirely ineffective in attack, a massive liability in defence and, unsurprisingly, the watching press were not impressed with what they saw.

For example, the Standard’s Matt Verri awarded the full-back a 2/10 match rating, writing that he was ‘shocking defensively’ and that he ‘frustrated throughout.’

This may all sound a little hypobolic, or unfair, but the 26-year-old’s statistics prove otherwise.

In his 96 minutes on the pitch, the Spaniard produced an expected assists figure of just 0.04, lost four of his six ground duels, committed two fouls, failed to play a key pass, failed in 100% of his dribbles and took 81 touches, but lost the ball 23 times.

Ultimately, Sunday was a terrible day at the office for the entire Spurs’ squad, but Vicario and Porro were particularly poor, and Frank should really be looking to drop them.

New CEO must improve CA-ACA relationship – Mark Taylor

Change in leadership an opportunity for Australian cricket to refresh, says former captain

Improving relationships between Cricket Australia (CA) and the Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) should be a priority for the governing body’s next chief executive, according to the former captain and CA Board director Mark Taylor.Speaking for the first time since James Sutherland’s resignation as CEO after a tenure of more than 17 years, Taylor said that the leadership change was an opportunity for CA to refresh, and pointed to a better and more productive relationship with the players and their association as critical to the future.Last year’s pay dispute between the ACA and CA, as it sought to end the fixed revenue percentage model at the core of all collective agreements between the parties since 1998, created distance between CA and the national team that proved unhelpful when the behaviour of Steven Smith’s team deteriorated on the tour of South Africa, culminating in the Newlands ball tampering scandal. That event took place a matter of weeks after Sutherland and CA had warned the team that higher standards of behaviour were expected than those seen in the first Test of the series at Durban.’Sutherland harshly judged’

Mark Taylor believes Australia’s Newlands ball tampering disgrace and last year’s pay dispute were two issues that should not be allowed to cloud the achievements of the the chief executive James Sutherland’s long stint at the top. “I think James’ tenure has been outstanding to be totally honest,” Taylor said. “Seventeen years as CEO and you think back to 2001 where cricket was then to where it is today, and people generally try to harp on negatives, but you look at the growth in the game both in numbers and where the game is at, the profile of the game I think James has done a great job.
“The disappointing thing is that James standing down is something that’s been in the pipeline for those of us within Cricket Australia for quite a while, over a year now. It’s very hard to get that timing absolutely right because issues come up all the time and often you get judged on the issue of the day, which is obviously what happened in Cape Town and reviews and all these sorts of things.
“That’s one incident that unfortunately mars what’s been a great era of Australian cricket and James has been at the helm of that. I look back at all the things he’s brought to cricket, the amount of people playing, women’s cricket, day/night cricket, Big Bash Leagues, a lot of things in the game have gone forward over 17 years of James’ tenure. Unfortunately a lot of people focus on a couple of issues that I don’t think James had a lot of say over in recent times.”

“I think that’s a fair comment,” Taylor told ESPNcricinfo when asked whether CA and the national team needed to form a stronger relationship. “I think you’ve only got to see the MoU stuff last year, which in the end I think has worked out well for both sides. But we got there with too much head-banging.”I think if there was a better relationship, full stop, we could have got to the same conclusion without a lot of angst. That’s one area that both sides can improve, Cricket Australia and the players and the Australian Cricketers Association. I think if we get that better, that’ll be good for cricket right throughout Australia.”Taylor’s words will provide food for thought to many, given that CA’s lead MoU negotiator Kevin Roberts is widely favoured to assume Sutherland’s post. Roberts was unsuccessful in pushing a hard line with the ACA, allowing the nation’s best players to fall out of contract and ultimately be sidelined from negotiations as Sutherland entered the fray to broker a compromise a matter of weeks before a Test tour of Bangladesh was threatened. At the same, time the chairman David Peever, who with Roberts was seen as a major driver of the Board’s adversarial industrial relations strategy, was endorsed to serve another three-year term, something Taylor said had been unavoidable due to the fact that Sutherland’s departure called for some measure of stability at the top.”David’s got the unanimous support of the Board, he had that when we made the decision a few months ago and he still has it today,” Taylor said. “There is a lot going on in the game of cricket at the moment, we’ve lost three players through an incident in Cape Town, they’ve lost a coach, we’re now losing a CEO, John Warn leaving Cricket NSW [chairmanship], there is a lot of change going on.”So it’s good to have some stability at the same time. I think David will bring that to CA and sometimes a change is as good as a holiday. There’ll be new people coming in, as we’ve seen with Justin Langer as coach, we’ll have a new CEO at some stage over the next year to bring in some different ideas, thinking and processes, and I think it’ll be a good refresh for the game.”That’ll be all post the reviews that are coming out in a couple of months’ time. So it is a turbulent time – an interesting time for the game but a refreshing time for the game. Sutherland standing down was something [that] those of us in the inner sanctum knew was going to happen last year, so we knew there was change afoot. But when you have an incident like we did in Cape Town, you can’t just say ‘oh well things will change in the future’, because people don’t believe you.”The dual reviews currently being undertaken – one into the whole of Cricket Australia, another more specifically the men’s national team – are set to provide the incoming chief executive with a roadmap for how to take the organisation forward. “We knew there was going to be a refresh of Australian cricket and I think in a way these reviews will certainly help us do that, focus our minds on how we refresh Australian cricket,” Taylor said. “I know there’s been a desire from some people to try to link James’ exit with what has gone on in the last three months, and really they’re not related.”A lot of the big deals have been done, and now I think whoever does come in, be it he or she, will also have an independent document or documents to help them work out where we need to improve. Cricket Australia have had their hand up for a while to say ‘let’s get a body in to work out where we can improve, what areas we need to work on’ and I think these will be great documents for he or she to have to start a new era of Australian cricket.”After the Nine Network lost the rights to broadcast cricket in Australia for the first time in 40 years, Taylor has re-signed for another three years with the broadcaster to continue working as a commentator and digital contributor. Nine retain the rights to next year’s Ashes tour and also ICC global tournaments, including the 2019 World Cup and the World Twenty20, hosted by Australia in 2020. On Saturday night, Taylor will sit alongside the banished David Warner in the studio for the second ODI between Australia and England.”As soon as we unfortunately lost the rights, they were very keen to grab hold of me and keep me because they want to keep some teeth in the game I think – contact with the game they’ve broadcast for 40 years,” he said. “I’m delighted they’ve offered me the job and I was more than happy to stay – I’ve been there for 20-odd years now and looking forward to the next three.”I’m sure David will have his opinions on how the team is going to go and what have you, but how much he talks about yesteryear and a few months ago will be up to David. I suspect it’ll be more looking forward to how the side’s going now and how David’s going to approach trying to get back into the side in a year’s time.”I’ve had lunch with Smithy [Steve Smith] in recent times as I’ve done for a few years. If I know David, he’ll obviously still be disappointed, saddened by what happened but he rebounds pretty quick, David, and I think he’ll be very much looking forward to next year. If I know David at all I’m sure he’ll be pretty perky and more so looking forward than looking back.”

Chelsea outcast has uncertain future at Stamford Bridge after recent talks

Chelsea are in a difficult moment on the pitch and could now be set to offload one of their players in January after he held discussions with the club over his future, according to reports.

What's the latest news involving Chelsea?

Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino has urged his players to mature following their difficult start to the 2023/24, which took another negative turn on Sunday against Aston Villa as Ollie Watkins condemned Chelsea to another defeat following Malo Gusto's red card at Stamford Bridge. Nicolas Jackson will also serve a suspension after picking up five yellow cards for dissent.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Pochettino stated: "We need to grow up as a team, not only in an individual way. A player like Nicolas is so young and is feeling his way into the Premier League and learning. He needs time, and in this type of game we are competing and want to win. But the players, when they are young, need to learn with experience and when they make a mistake."

Football Insider report that despite Chelsea taking just five points from their opening six matches, Argentinian boss Pochettino is under no pressure from the club hierarchy and will be given time to turn their fortunes around. Chelsea see Pochettino as someone who can restore the club back near the top of the pile in English football. However, there is an awareness from all sides that results must improve in the coming weeks.

Next up for Chelsea is a home clash against Brighton & Hove Albion in the third round of the Carabao Cup and they will be hoping to arrest their slump in form that has yielded no victories since their 2-1 triumph over AFC Wimbledon in the second round of the competition.

Nevertheless, the Blues continue to have a long injury list and will be without Reece James, Carney Chukwuemeka, Noni Madueke, Benoit Badiashile, Marcus Bettinelli, Christopher Nkunku, Trevoh Chalobah, Romeo Lavia and Wesley Fofana for the tie.

Who could leave Chelsea?

Marc Cucurella is believed to have held talks with Chelsea boss Pochettino about his future at the club and is now eyeing a January exit from Stamford Bridge, according to The Sun.

Manchester United were keen to take the Spain international on loan during the summer, though the deal fell through and they instead brought in Sergio Reguilon from Tottenham Hotspur. Cucurella is now weighing up his options and is keen to leave unless his minutes improve in the Premier League.

Since completing a money-spinning £63 million move to Chelsea last summer, Cucurella has struggled to make an impact at Stamford Bridge, making 34 appearances in total for the Blues, registering two assists in the process, as per Transfermarkt.

Compared to his positional peers across Europe's top five leagues across the last 365 days, Cucurella has excelled in the art of successful challenges, making around 3.83 per 90 minutes, putting him in the 99th percentile for this metric, as per FBRef.

Chelsea may need to grant the full-back more license to show his capabilities in SW6 or they run the risk of losing his services when the January window opens.

Southampton transfer news: £30k-p/w player set to leave St Mary’s this week

Southampton are expected to sanction the exit of another senior squad member, and a fresh report has revealed how quickly the departure is likely to take place.

Who is leaving Southampton?

On the south coast, Sport Republic have already completed the permanent sales of James Ward-Prowse, Romeo Lavia, Tino Livramento, Nathan Tella, Mohammed Salisu, Moussa Djenepo and Mislav Orsic over the summer, whilst also giving the green light for both Armel Bella-Kotchap and Duje Caleta-Car to go out on loan, as per Transfermarkt.

Russell Martin's side have made a promising start to life in the Championship having won three, drawn one and lost just one of their opening five games, but one of the players who is yet to make his mark in the second tier and therefore could be the next on his way out is Paul Onuachu.

This season, Nigeria's international is yet to make a single appearance in the league, so whilst he still has another three years remaining on his contract, his lack of game time shows just how out of favour he is and he will know that the only way he can increase the minutes he's getting under his belt is by sealing a departure.

The St. Mary’s outfit also already have Che Adams, Adam Armstrong, Sekou Mara and the recently signed Ross Stewart from Sunderland in the building, so the chance of the attacker getting a look in over the remainder of the campaign seems highly unlikely.

Is Paul Onuachu leaving Southampton?

According to Turkish outlet Fanatik (via Sport Witness), Trabzonspor have made contact with Southampton to enquire about a deal to sign Onuachu, with the Turkish window open until next weekend.

The Super Lig outfit are “looking for a striker” and have turned their attention towards the Saints star having previously failed to reach an agreement for Fulham’s Carlos Vinicius.

Championship chiefs paid €18m (£15.4m) for their prized asset so the chances of him being permanently sold are “slim to none”, but the option of sending him out on loan is definitely on the table.

Martin’s attacker “wants to play” on a more regular basis so he would be “happy to go” overseas, and it’s stated that the deal is “expected to be finalised this week”.

Southampton striker Paul Onuachu.

How good is Paul Onuachu?

When Nathan Jones recruited Onuachu, Southampton’s former manager dubbed him a “significant signing” considering the money he cost, but having failed to live up to expectations, Sport Republic and Martin sanctioning his departure would be completely the right decision, regardless of if it was permanently or a loan.

The Owerri native has recorded zero goals or assists since putting pen to paper and ranked as the club’s 19th best-performing player out of 36 squad members last season, via WhoScored, so he isn't really bringing anything positive to the side when given the opportunity to play and showcase what potential he has to offer.

Furthermore, Onuachu is currently pocketing £30k-per-week which is a lot for a second tier team to be cashing out on a fringe player, so the clu need to get him off the books as soon as possible and put his salary towards generating funds for fresh faces in January.

Wagner, Boult seal 2-0 sweep

Trent Boult and Tim Southee shot out the top order, Neil Wagner bruised the batsmen in the middle, and Mitchell Santner cleaned up the tail, as New Zealand cruised to a 240-run victory at Seddon Park

The Report by Andrew Fidel Fernando12-Dec-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsTrent Boult and Tim Southee shot out the top order, Neil Wagner bruised the batsmen in the middle, and Mitchell Santner cleaned up the tail, as New Zealand cruised to a 240-run victory at Seddon Park. West Indies’ second innings featured only one brave stand – a 78-run association for the sixth wicket between Roston Chase and Raymon Riefer. Only on the first day of this Test can the visitors be said to have been in the hunt for victory. Avoiding defeat was always going to be difficult after giving up a first-innings lead of 152, but West Indies would perhaps be disappointed with the speed of their demise.New Zealand, meanwhile, made a strong start to their home summer, as their quicks bowled themselves into a rhythm, and key batsmen ran into form. The only downside for the hosts is that having played no Tests since March, they now have no long-format matches scheduled until March next year.Getty Images

It was Wagner and his hostility that made the greatest impression on the final day, and set New Zealand on track for a day-four finish. Combative and intense as ever, and aided by a Seddon Park track receptive to his mode of operation, he sent a torrent of deliveries at the batsmen’s ribs, and regularly threatened their throats, clearly taking pleasure in their discomfort. The bodyline barrage began in his first over of the day. Immediately after being cover-driven for four by Shai Hope, he struck the batsman flush on an unprotected forearm. The follow up: another bouncer – up near the neck this time. Hope could not control his hook, which finished up in the hands of long leg.In his next two overs, Wagner claimed two more victims. He got a ball to rear up off a back-of-a-length and struck Sunil Ambris painfully on the forearm – a blow that required the attention of a physiotherapist, and would turn out to have caused a fracture. Ambris initially stayed in the middle after receiving the blow, but one more ball from Wagner in the following over – this one at the ribs – was enough to convince him to head for the safety of the dressing room. He did not return to bat.West Indies fined for slow over rate

The West Indies players were fined 20% of their match fee, and stand-in captain Kraigg Brathwaite 40% of his, after the team was deemed to be two overs short its target in Hamilton. As per ICC regulations, the team is fined 10% of their match fee for each over they fall short, and the captain is fined twice that.
Brathwaite was already standing in as captain due to Jason Holder being suspended for previous over-rate offences – two minor over-rate offences in a Test within 12 months results in the captain being suspended.

Shane Dowrich, the man who replaced Ambris at the crease, was one of the few West Indies batsmen to avoid being struck by Wagner, but that is because he only lasted two balls. In fending off a another uncomfortable rib-high delivery, Dowrich sent a sharp catch to short leg, who claimed the chance to his right. Having also struck Chase on the upper body, Wagner would be the man to break that sixth-wicket partnership, prompting another mis-hit hook, which was again gobbled up by an advancing long leg. While Wagner had his victims caught on the legside, Boult and Southee went the more conventional route: having them caught behind the wicket on the offside. Kraigg Brathwaite was the first batsman to be dismissed on Tuesday, slapping a Boult delivery to Williamson, who took the sharp chance at head height. Williamson would see more action in that position later on. Riefer, who ground his way to a 109-ball 29 – sent a low catch in that direction, and Williamson made an incredibly difficult chance seem simple, taking the catch at shin height with his left hand.Chase was positive through the course of his 64 off 98 balls, but it was his ability to resist hooking Wagner that allowed him to survive so long. He scored his runs through the offside instead – particularly backward of point. When he was dismissed, New Zealand were on the home stretch. Kemar Roach opened his shoulders during a 44-ball 32, but Santner struck in successive deliveries to end that salvo, and the match.

Sussex tempt back Gillespie for coach's role

Sussex have announced Jason Gillespie as their new head coach. The decision ends a period of increasingly feverish speculation in which Matt Prior, the former England wicketkeeper, lobbied publicly for a role in a club that he believes has “gone soft”.Gillespie’s move to Hove, following a brief spell working with Papua New Guinea, represents an about-turn on a decision to commit his future primarily to Australia. When he stood down as Yorkshire head coach last year, having led them to successive Championship titles, he said that the move of his family back to Australia had made it impractical for him to serve as a full-time coach in English county cricket. He was linked with the England role before Trevor Bayliss took charge in 2015 and also had a brief spell as Kent bowling coach earlier this year where the pull of the county circuit remained strong.Further reflection has caused a change of mind as Gillespie takes on the talk of reinvigorating a county that dominated English cricket under the tenure of Peter Moores in the first decade of the century. He will find a club with exciting bowling stocks – Jofra Archer and George Garton are arguably the two most exhilarating young quicks in the country – but with vulnerabilities in their top-order batting, made worse by the premature retirement through injury of Matt Machan and the departure of their experienced opener, Chris Nash, to Nottinghamshire.A Sussex statement said: “We are thrilled that Jason has agreed to join us on an initial three-year contract. He will take up his post in the New Year, in time for our pre-season preparations and tour.”Gillespie, who will spend the rest of the year in Adelaide, where he coaches Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash, said: “I am thrilled to be given the opportunity of taking the reins at such a proud and traditional club like Sussex. I know that there is some excitement around the capabilities of the current playing group.”I look forward to getting over there and playing my role in helping Sussex achieve its on and off-field goals for 2018 and beyond.”It remains to be seen whether Gillespie will take up Prior’s lobbying for a role within the county where he spent his entire first-class career. But Prior has already tweeted his enthusiasm for a “fantastic” appointment, adding: “It’s a very good start to the club moving forward.”Rob Andrew, Sussex’s chief executive, said: “Jason is exactly the experienced head coach we had hoped we would attract to the role. He has enormous experience of the English county game after his very successful spell with Yorkshire.”We believe we have a very talented young squad and we need a bit a bit of stability and a coach of Jason’s experience to help mould a successful team over the next few years.”
