Pundit: Tottenham have a "really exciting" teenager about to replace Davies

Tottenham Hotspur have a “really exciting” teenager who could be about to replace long-serving defender Ben Davies, with the former Swansea City star potentially playing out his final season in north London.

Ben Davies nearing Spurs exit after 11-year stay

Next summer will mark 11 years at Spurs for Davies, following his move to N17 from Swansea in 2014.

Tottenham have "made a bid" to sign attacking gem who's "flying" right now

ByEmilio Galantini Oct 16, 2024

Since making the switch to London from Wales, the versatile defender has made an impressive 333 appearances in all competitions for Tottenham, playing in some huge games for the club and showcasing real reliability.

However, the 31-year-old is now reaching the twilight phase of his career and has barely been called upon by Ange Postecoglou so far this season. Davies captained Spurs to a dramatic 2-1 win over Coventry City in the EFL Cup, whilst also starting both of their Europa League games, but he hasn’t played a single minute of Premier League football.

Davies didn’t even make the matchday squad for Spurs’ most recent top-flight clashes against Brentford, Man United and Brighton, with the centre-back/left-back reduced to being a bit-part cup player.

It is believed that Davies earns more than both Destiny Udogie and Micky van de Ven at Tottenham, despite the latter pair’s status as mainstays in Postecoglou’s starting eleven, so chairman Daniel Levy and technical director Johan Lange may well opt to let go of him when his contract runs out in 2025.

Ben Davies among Tottenham teammates

Luckily, Postecoglou appears to have a ready-made replacement for the veteran in summer signing Archie Gray. The 18-year-old can play in a variety of positions, including at full-back, so Gray may well stand out as a very good option to take Postecoglou’s side forward in the coming seasons.

Gray is widely regarded as one of England’s most promising up-and-coming talents, with Spurs utilising his quality on a number of occasions already following his stellar campaign at Leeds United in the Championship last season.

Tottenham tipped to replace Ben Davies with Archie Gray

Speaking to Tottenham News this week, pundit John Wenham has tipped Spurs to replace Davies with Gray. The former could be about to pass the torch down to Levy’s summer signing, with Wenham also branding the teenager “really exciting”.

“Gray is doing really well,” Wenham said.

“I think, at a minimum, he is going to become the next Davies in the squad, in terms of his reliability in multiple positions. Davies is out of contract this summer and I can see Gray taking his role in the squad. Him being so young and counting as homegrown too, that is really exciting.”

Leeds were heartbroken to lose their Thorp Arch academy graduate in the summer, highlighting just how highly rated he is by those working in the beautiful game.

“Understanding the attraction of Premier League and European football, the club, with a heavy heart, agreed the transfer, but the move has strengthened the board’s resolve to ultimately return Leeds to a position where it can meet the footballing ambitions of even its brightest stars,” wrote Leeds in a candid statement (via Ben Jacobs).

“Whilst we understand that supporters will be hugely disappointed to lose such a home-grown talent, and a family name so synonymous with Leeds United, the move improves the club’s chance to compete for automatic promotion next season by increasing our ability to build a competitive squad within the league’s financial control regulations. Everyone at Leeds United is heartbroken to see one of our own depart and would like to thank Archie for all his efforts and professionalism.”

The left-footed strike from the right-hand side of the penalty area was the second time that Nwaneri has scored in the Premier League – that makes it two for Arsenal in the competition before the age of 18. He is the first to achieve that feat, going ahead of former teen prodigy Cesc Fabregas, who only scored one Premier League goal aged 17 or younger. The Spaniard got his second just days after his 18th birthday in 2005.

Nwaneri has been a permanent part of the Arsenal first-team this season, although until recently the majority of his appearances had been as a substitute or as a Carabao Cup starter. The Brighton game was his second successive Premier League start after also featuring in the XI against Brentford on New Year's Day.

Nwaneri previously broke another Fabregas record when he debuted at the age of 15 years and 181 days in 2022, becoming Arsenal's youngest ever player in the process. That also made him the Premier League era's youngest player, breaking the record set by Harvery Elliott, while he is the youngest debutant in the history of the English top flight – a record which had stood since 1964.

With Bukayo Saka currently injured and perhaps not back until March following hamstring surgery, Nwaneri is taking his chance and looks set for an extended run in the Arsenal team. The Gunners will face Newcastle in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final on Tuesday night, before hosting Manchester United in the FA Cup third round. The Champions League also returns later this month, with matchday seven and eight against Dinamo Zagreb and Girona respectively.

Plymouth's wretched away form was highlighted again when they lost 4-0 at Coventry on Thursday in the Championship. Despite the Pilgrims being bottom of the table, Sky Blues boss Lampard said he wished Rooney well going forward and that he had a "lot to give" the sport.

After his side rose to 15th in the table, he told talkSPORT: "I know the challenges of each job and you only know when you're in it. Wayne obviously has his career behind him and now his management career as well, which he's gone straight into. There will be challenges for him there. It's not for me to comment on that, I'm very happy with us today. I always wish Wayne well because he's a proper football person. Again, there's challenges so people have to understand he's working. I hope to see him do well because he's a young English manager with a lot to give and that continues to be the case."

Has asked the youngsters to keep learningFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti talked about the lack of opportunities for Endrick and Arda Guler, asserting that he isn't against handing minutes to the young duo. In spite of the mounting injury list in recent months, Ancelotti has used both Endrick and Guler sparingly over the course of the season.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Guler arrived at Real Madrid in 2023, but the first half of his debut season at his new club was marred by injuries. At the end of the season, he scored six goals in as many LaLiga appearances, before putting on sensational performances for Turkey at the EURO 2024. It was widely expected that the young Turk would get a more prominent role in his second season, but that has not been the case. On the other hand, Endrick announced his arrival from Brazil with a bang as he scored on both his LaLiga and Champions League debuts.

Despite their positive cameos off the bench, Ancelotti has been reluctant to use the teenage pair more often. Even if Guler has started a few games here and there, the amount of injuries Madrid have suffered in the first four months of the campaign should have opened up more minutes for Endrick and Guler.

WHAT CARLO ANCELOTTI SAID

"Endrick is staying here, as is Guler. They may need more minutes, but I'm not prejudiced against anyone," Ancelotti said at a press conference, addressing reports of potential loan moves for the duo.

"I just try to put the best players in every game. I don't care whether someone is 18 or 40. Sometimes it can be like that with Endrick, with Guler or without them. You have to be patient with the youngsters. They bring enthusiasm but, because they are young, they also have to learn certain things. I'm not prejudiced against youngsters: in my career I've put 17 or 18-year-olds in if I thought they were the right ones to play the games."

AFPWHAT NEXT FOR REAL MADRID?

With two wins and three losses from their opening give games in the Champions League group stage this season, Los Blancos unexpectedly face a challenge to finish in the top 24. Their next assignment is against one of the most in-form teams in Europe at the moment, Atalanta, who are also at the top of the Serie A table after 15 games. The match will take place on Tuesday, December 10, at Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo.

Formal talks held: Newcastle take first steps to sign £7,500-p/w defender

Newcastle United have reportedly opened talks over signing another defender this summer as Eddie Howe looks to bolster his backline ahead of the new Premier League season.

Business slow for Newcastle United

As it stands, Newcastle United will be heading into their Premier League opener against newly promoted Southampton with just four new faces in their ranks.

Two of those, goalkeeping pair John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos, are unlikely to see too much first team action barring an injury to no.1 Nick Pope, with the Greek shot-stopper having been signed as part of a deal to sell promising talent Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest.

Elsewhere, they have added free agent Lloyd Kelly from Bournemouth to bolster their backline, while William Osula has also arrived from Sheffield United in a deal worth £10m.

Though both deals may prove shrewd, they are far less than what was expected on Tyneside given the Saudi Arabian ownership of the club. They have, however, been boosted by the return of Sandro Tonali from a gambling ban, with the club's record signing available to return to action from the end of August in a move that will help ease midfield concerns for the Magpies.

The talent could be allowed to leave his current club this summer.

ByEthan Lamb Aug 15, 2024

Meanwhile, they are locked in talks over a deal to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, having had two bids turned down for his services so far. Earlier in the week, Palace chairman Steve Parish was bullish over his defender, who is refusing to sign a new contract at Selhurst Park.

"Nobody has got to the valuation yet. If you want a superstar player you need to pay superstar money," he explained. "It's not near the point where we have to make a decision. We love having him and would love to keep him. If someone else wants to have him they need to make it really difficult for us. He's a generational talent."

Newcastle continue to push for his signature, and have now kick started a move for another defensive target.

Magpies make contact over Ligue 1 centre-back

That comes in the 6 foot 3 shape of Toulouse centre-back Logan Costa, who Eddie Howe's side have been linked with several times this summer. The 23-year-old is down to the final two years of his £7,500 per week deal in the south of France, and has been linked with moves to West Ham, Bologna and the Magpies.

Valued at between €18m and €20m (£15.4m-£17.1m) by his club, Newcastle have now taken the first official step towards his potential arrival.

That comes as Bologna local media [via Sport Witness] claim that Howe's side have now made "first formal contact" over a deal for the defender as they pursue a deal – the Italian press are following the deal due to Bologna's own interest.

Any move for Costa alongside Guehi would be a strange one in the long term, with Fabian Schar, Sven Botman and Jamal Lascelles all already at the club as well as new signing Kelly, despite Botman and Lascelles currently recovering from injury and expected back later in the season.

As the Magpies head into the new campaign with no backup options to Kelly and Schar, though, it makes a lot of sense for their immediate results.

Derby hit gold on incredible gem who’s now worth more than the entire squad

Derby County will enter the Championship next season with a number of products from their academy present in and around the first-team, with the Rams youth set-up hailed as being a fertile place for stars to develop, before shining when making the leap up into the senior mix.

Eiran Cashin, unless he is snapped up between now and the opening day, is the most notable face who has managed to make a first-team spot his own since graduating from the Academy structure, whilst the likes of Max Bird and Jason Knight have got bumper moves away from Pride Park after cutting their teeth in Derbyshire.

Derby County defenderEiran Cashin.

Yet, even with plenty of examples of Derby's patience paying off with homegrown stars, there are other examples where the Rams have prematurely let a gem go who has then gone on to excel away from the Championship club.

That doesn't mean Derby won't still win in the long-term, however, with a former Academy starlet in Liam Delap having just completed a bumper move, which could see Paul Warne and Co gain some significant money to put towards their second-tier transfer kitty.

Liam Delap's start at Derby

Delap moving onto Ipswich could see Derby win a sweet cash bonus, with the Championship outfit cleverly inserting a sell-on clause when they allowed the 21-year-old to move on in 2019, in case something like this occurred down the line.

Delap spent ten years in and around the youth set-up at the Rams before moving to Manchester City, with the wide-eyed sensation benefitting from his early Pride Park education, which might well have helped him hone in on his vicious goalscoring skills that have been seen playing youth football for City.

The 6 foot 1 forward would go on to only make eight appearances for Derby U18s, scoring just once from those appearances, before being snapped by the reigning Premier League champions.

Warne's side never unfortunately got to witness Delap at his prolific best, therefore, with there being a theoretical world where the highly rated new Ipswich signing would have gone on to make many a senior appearance at Pride Park, instead of walking away from his boyhood club so early into his fledging career.

Instead, he turned into a notoriously ice-cold finisher of chances playing in the Premier League 2 and beyond for Pep Guardiola's titans, which has led him to making such an expensive switch to Suffolk.

How Delap developed at Man City

Man City didn't just take a risky gamble on Delap coming good, however, with the deadly youngster showing off his goalscoring prowess with the England U16s when still on the books at Derby.

The promising attacker would bag six goals from ten games on the International stage in this age bracket, before going on to be capped all the way up to the U21s, with the goals never drying up.

The ridiculous goal above is just one of many sublime strikes Delap has managed to put away playing for City, with a ridiculous 11 strikes and seven assists managed from 18 U18 appearances after he first waved Derby goodbye.

That fast-tracked the 21-year-old up to the U21 fold, where he became even more of a calm finisher under pressure, with a staggering 35 goals from just 36 games, as his former employers watched on in awe of what their youth player was now doing to defences regularly in the Premier League 2 and other competitions.

This composure in front of goal even saw Guardiola take notice and label Delap as an "incredible" finisher, with the Spaniard also allowing the 21-year-old to net a senior strike at the Etihad Stadium, by scoring against AFC Bournemouth in the EFL Cup in 2020.

Delap's value in 2024

Loan spells down in the Championship away from the luxuries of the Premier League giants have also seen him sharpen his skills in finding the back of net further, with eight strikes managed last season for Hull City as Ipswich now gain the services of the highly rated centre-forward for a reported fee of £20m.

Derby won't be mega-rich off the back of this development, but gaining a slim fraction of that £20m will still go a long way you imagine, especially when you consider that amount is more than what the entire Derby squad is currently worth, according to Transfermarkt.

Derby's entire squad, as per Transfermarkt's latest valuation, is currently worth around £12.6m, which is some way off Delap.

Ipswich will hope they aren't paying way over the odds for their new 6 foot 1 star, considering Man City managed to win his services from Derby for just £1m back in 2019.

Delap would even become Derby's record departure with that £20m price tag now next to his head, when glancing at the table above, with Warne and Co hopeful that some of this cash can go towards boosting and strengthening their squad ahead of their return to the Championship.

The Championship can be an unforgiving division, and with some additions already entering into the building bolstering the ranks, this new added injection of cash could go some way in further adding strength in depth.

It remains to be seen whether or not Delap becomes a success at Ipswich, after being protected by the youth pitches at City for some time.

But, Derby won't really be paying attention to that, as they focus on survival as a minimum this season to come.

Derby could soon move on promotion hero who earns more than Mendez-Laing

As Derby County continue to strengthen with incomings, a number of players could now be allowed to head for the exit door.

NOVAS CHANCES…

Dyche personally monitoring Everton move for £20m Branthwaite successor

Everton have identified a £20m rising star as a potential replacement for centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite, according to reports.

Everton face battle to keep Branthwaite

Everton's 2023/24 campaign was hampered by their points deductions – the Toffees ended the season sat 15th in the Premier League, but with the best defensive record in the divison outside of the top-three – conceding 51 goals in 38 outings.

A key reason for this was the displays of 21-year-old sensation Branthwaite, who made 35 league appearances and was handed a call-up to England's provisonal Euro 2024 squad before being cut.

After such a stellar season, however, the Merseyside outfit are facing a battle to keep hold of the Englishman, with Manchester United working hard to get a transfer completed this summer.

In a bid to solve their defensive issues, United are seemingly targeting the Everton and England centre-back as they aim to sure up their backline for the forthcoming campaign. Last week, it was claimed that Man Utd have agreed personal terms with Branthwaite over an Old Trafford transfer, with a contract worth between £150-160k per week on the table.

However, the two clubs are yet to come to terms of a transfer fee, with United having a £45m bid knocked back recently as the Toffees eye a figure closer to the £75m mark.

Sean Dyche and co. are now seemingly on the lookout for potential replacments for Branthwaite should a transfer to Old Trafford go through, with both Manchester United's Victor Lindelof and Hull City's Jacob Greaves named as potential targets.

Everton keeping tabs on "outstanding" Branthwaite replacement

Now, an update on Everton's pursuit of Greaves has been provided. Speaking about Greaves' transfer rumours last year, ex-Hull City head coach Liam Rosenior labelled the defender as "outstanding".

"It's wonderful that a player who has come through our academy has been spoken about in this way," he said. "I love it when my players are being linked with clubs higher up because it means they're doing a good job and it means the team is doing a good job.

"Jacob's an outstanding player. Would I rather have him here from a footballing point of view? One hundred percent, because he's got so much potential and so much to learn. Every single club has to make a decision based on their best interests. Sometimes that's keeping a player and sometimes that's selling a player and I'm sure we'll make that decision whenever that comes up."

Jacob Greaves in action for Hull City in the Championship.

But while Hull were able to fend off transfer interest in the centre-back last year, they face another tough battle to do so in the current window after missing out on promotion to the Premier League. This comes with Hull Live reporting Everton are considering a move for the 23-year-old this summer, with Dyche believing that the defender can fill the void in his team's backline should Branthwaite move on.

Hull do not want to lose Greaves, who has a reported price-tag of £20m, but the Yorkshire outfit will consider selling the stopper if he makes clear his desire to test himself in the Premier League. And speaking earlier this month, Hull owner Acun Ilicali stated that Greaves does indeed want to play in the English top-flight.

"Greaves wants to play in the Premier League. He's such a nice boy, he just said to me (his wish to play in the Premier League)," he said. "I love him as a character. He's a real captain."
