Man Utd could replace Varane with £44m "top talent" who’s like Pique

A return of just 22 goals from 20 Premier League games this season has unsurprisingly shone the spotlight on Manchester United's attacking ranks of late, yet it is fair to say that the defensive unit also appears in need of reinforcement in 2024.

In the Champions League, in particular, the Red Devils looked rather shaky after conceding 15 goals in their six group-stage games – the worst record of any English club in the competition's history.

One notable issue has been Erik ten Hag's inability to settle on a regular centre-back pairing due to injury, having even been forced to deploy veteran summer signing, Jonny Evans, far more frequently than was expected.

Not only have the likes of Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Raphael Varane been struck down by injury or illness on numerous occasions, but with the trio all in and around their thirties, a more long-term solution needs to be found as a priority.

While Lindelof has seen his deal extended at Old Trafford in recent days, Varane, meanwhile, is currently free to discuss a possible pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs, with his deal set to expire this summer.

That rather brutal move not to hand the World Cup winner an extension would suggest that United are already beginning to think about replacing him in the near future, with Italian starlet Giorgio Scalvini seemingly one of those being lined up at present.

Man Utd transfer news – Giorgio Scalvini

As per reports in Spain that emerged last week, the Red Devils are believed to be willing to fork out the €50m (£44m) fee that would be required to trigger the 20-year-old's release clause, with Ten Hag and co looking to beat Real Madrid to the youngster's signature.

The latest indication is that the Old Trafford side view Jean-Clair Todibo as their "main target" for the position – as per transfer expert Rudy Galetti – yet Scalvini could represent a worthy alternative, having emerged as a "top talent" of late, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

As per the Spanish sources, United could look to make their move for the Atalanta ace this month, rather than wait until the summer, with that likely to come as a timely boost at a time when the Premier League giants are floundering outside the top four.

Giogio Scalvini's style of play

Already capped seven times by his country at senior level despite his relative youth, the 6 foot 4 colossus has unsurprisingly caught the attention of those at the Theatre of Dreams, having established himself as a key figure in Bergamo of late.

With 76 first-team appearances under his belt to date – in which he has scored four goals and contributed three assists – the emerging gem has quickly caught the eye of his teammates, with ex-Arsenal man Sead Kolasinac only recently stating:

"I am struck by the maturity of his 19 years. He reads the game well, he knows what to do with the ball, defend one-on-one, how to use his body in marking: it's nice to have him alongside in defence.

"But first of all he is a good guy, even humble: if he doesn't lose this character, he will have a great career."

What's more, the towering asset is also believed to share a likeness to one former United man, in the form of Gerard Pique – according to talent scout Jacek Kulig – having been praised as a 'complete, elegant and dominant centre-back'.

Pique memorably began his senior career under Sir Alex Ferguson after arriving from Barcelona in 2004, before ultimately returning to Camp Nou four years later to establish himself as a key figure in a glittering period of success for the La Liga side.

While it didn't work out for the now-retired talent in Manchester, his heroics in Catalonia showcased the blunder that Ferguson and co had made by letting him slip from their grasp, as he became at one stage arguably the "best centre-back in the world" – as ex-teammate Carlos Puyol noted in 2018.

To think that United could be able to snap up the heir to the World Cup-winning rock is intriguing indeed, with Scalvini certainly a left-field option that United should well consider.

How Scalvini compares to Varane

Much like Pique – who Puyol described as being in "complete control" on the pitch – what sets Scalvini apart is his composure and quality in possession, showcased by the fact that he ranks in the top 14% among those in his position in Europe's top five leagues for progressive passes per 90.

Regularly seen driving out from the back with the ball at his feet, as part of Atalanta's preferred three-at-the-back system, the Chiari native also ranks in the top 13% for successful take-ons per 90, further proof of how comfortable he is at playing out from the back.

That is in stark contrast to the man he could replace – Varane – with the experienced defender arguably more of an old-school defender than an asset on the ball, the 30-year-old ranking in just the top 28% and the top 48% for those same two metrics, respectively.

Ten Hag can forget about Varane with Man Utd swoop for £78m titan

The Red Devils have been linked with an interest in the talented young defender.

ByDan Emery Jan 2, 2024

Such quality on the ball does not detract from Scalvini's ultimate goal of keeping the ball out of the net, however, as he also ranks in the top 1% for interceptions, the top 8% for tackles and the top 20% for aerial duels won per 90.

Varane, on the other hand, ranks in just the bottom 9% for interceptions and the bottom 14% for tackles made, as well as in just the top 41% for aerial duels won across the last 365 days, seemingly suggesting that the younger man is performing considerably better of late.

With the current United man also proving unreliable due to his regular spells on the sidelines – having started just 29 league games since the start of 2022/23 – the Italian, meanwhile, has been a far more regular pick under Gian Piero Gasperini, starting 44 times since the start of last term.

For as good as Varane can be, the inability to rely on him over a sustained period is a pressing issue, with the ruthless decision to move him on seemingly wise.

Whether Scalvini will be the man to replace him remains to be seen, yet the Pique-esque talent seemingly has the credentials to prove a more than adequate replacement, if not an upgrade.

India to keep Kedar Jadhav's World Cup spot safe

The shoulder injury is not as serious as earlier expected, and the middle-order batsman is likely to be fully fit in time for the team’s departure

Nagraj Gollapudi08-May-2019Kedar Jadhav’s IPL may have come to a premature end because of a shoulder injury, but his World Cup spot is likely to remain intact. ESPNcricinfo understands that the Indian selection committee, led by MSK Prasad, has been told that Jadhav’s injury might not be as serious as was earlier feared. With the ICC’s playing conditions for the World Cup allowing teams to make changes to their preliminary squads of 15 until May 23, it is believed that Prasad’s panel will wait till as close as possible to the Indian team’s departure before naming a replacement for Jadhav, if they are forced to.Last Sunday, playing in Chennai Super Kings’ final league match in the IPL, against Kings XI Punjab in Mohali, Jadhav hurt his left shoulder while fielding in the deep. He left the field immediately and did not return. It was understood at the time that Jadhav’s IPL was likely over, and on Tuesday evening, Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming confirmed the news to the host broadcaster on the sidelines of his team’s Qualifier 1 face-off against Mumbai Indians, which they lost.”Well, he is out for us, and then it is just about being accurate with that assessment,” Fleming said. “He was going through the scans and working with Patrick Farhart (the Indian team physiotherapist), so there’s obviously one eye now on the World Cup and getting him fit.”But from our point of view, he is certainly out of the tournament.”The selection panel is understood to have received an update from Farhart, which indicates that Jadhav is likely to be fully fit before the Indian squad departs for the World Cup on May 22. India play their first match at the World Cup on June 5, against South Africa. In case Jadhav can’t make the trip, the selectors will pick a replacement from the standby list of five players: Rishabh Pant, Ambati Rayudu, Axar Patel, Navdeep Saini and Ishant Sharma. Incidentally, Saini is also part of the quartet of fast bowlers who will travel with the squad to the World Cup to function as net bowlers, the other three being Deepak Chahar, Khaleel Ahmed and Avesh Khan.

Man Utd could land Nunez 2.0 in £26m-rated target who "couldn’t buy a goal"

After winning the Carabao Cup and earning a third-place Premier League finish last season, Manchester United were expected to progress further this campaign.

Instead, they have been woeful and sit eighth in the table, with Erik ten Hag struggling to inspire his squad.

With that in mind, the Red Devils will look to strengthen their squad in January with the hopes of fixing their attacking issue, which has seen only two teams score fewer in the top flight – Burnley and Sheffield United.

Man Utd transfers latest – Timo Werner

According to a report from the Mirror earlier this week, Man United have set their sights on Timo Werner this January, with the German recognised as a key target.

RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner celebrates scoring a goal.

Despite only being worth €30m (£26m), according to CIES Football Observatory, the move would be a loan deal, with Werner viewed as a temporary fix to a long-term issue.

RB Leipzig will allow the German to leave this winter, as he has failed to secure a spot in the starting XI so far this season.

Timo Werner’s style of play

Ex-Chelsea forward Werner has endured a tough spell this season, highlighted by the fact he’s started just two Bundesliga games all season and has been an unused substitute in Leipzig's last three league games. The signings of Lois Openda, Benjamin Sesko, and Xavi Simons have pushed the German further down the pecking order this campaign.

RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.

If United were to sign the Bundesliga striker, they could be getting their own version of Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez, as according to Tony Cascarino of talkSPORT, the Uruguayan reminds him of Werner, who apparently "couldn't buy a goal" during his time at Stamford Bridge.

Nonetheless, the few statistics below from the last year do suggest that Cascarino's judgement may have been accurate.

Both players aren’t exactly the most composed finishers, as shown by the stats above, but they have elite movement to get into goal-scoring positions. That is also highlighted by the underperformance of xG, it proves that the German and Nunez are both wasteful in front of goal. Given that United have the joint third-worst attack in the Premier League, they could do with a striker who is clinical, not someone who could squander the only opportunity they get each game.

With Nunez – who has netted just five league goals this season – hardly setting the world alight at Anfield, for United to sign their own version of the former Benfica man would be a headscratcher, particularly with Werner scoring just ten league goals during his spell with the Blues.

Furthermore, the Champions League winner is rather injury-prone and has already suffered two separate setbacks this season, ultimately making him miss seven matches. It would take a while for him to get up to speed due to his time out, and Ten Hag needs reliability after an injury-disrupted few months.

Overall, Werner’s time at Chelsea came to an end with a lack of playing time being one of the reasons for his departure, and he will leave Leipzig once again in search of game time.

However, even though United have been poor in attack, it is difficult to see Werner taking on a constant starting XI role with the talent in Ten Hag’s side. The move for the German is simply the best that United can get, rather than what they need.

Arsenal could sign Saka 2.0 with move for "elite" £60m PL star

Since the start of the 2023/24 season, Arsenal have been nothing short of dominant, with the side leading the way in the Premier League and UEFA Champions League Group B.

On Wednesday night in Europe, the Gunners raced out the blocks to secure a 5-0 lead by half-time versus Lens, with the tie concluding 6-0, a much more convincing victory than the 1-0 away win against Brentford.

Mikel Arteta took the opportunity to rotate some of his key men in the second half in order to protect them from injury, with one of those being Bukayo Saka, who has suffered a couple of knocks this season already.

Because of this, the boss may look to reinforce the right-wing position in his side this transfer window.

Arsenal transfer news – Neto

As per TEAMtalk last week, Arteta is interested in signing the “elite” Pedro Neto, but it is rumoured that only a fee upwards of £60m will be considered by Wolves.

Wolves winger Pedro Neto.

Manchester United and teams from Saudi Arabia also recognise Neto as a target, but the Portuguese winger’s agent, Jorge Mendes, has been in contact with the club from north London.

Despite the 23-year-old currently nursing an injury himself, Arteta is still a huge admirer of his talent, and Arsenal are the club who are most likely to acquire his services, with Neto wanting to remain in Europe.

How Pedro Neto compares to Bukayo Saka

The winger who can operate on either flank has plenty of similarities to Saka, who will inevitably be above him in the pecking order.

Much like the England international, Neto is “incredibly talented and physically gifted”, according to Wolves boss Gary O’Neil. Physicality and the ability to bounce off players to create or retain the ball, is one of Saka’s most important traits, therefore Neto would be like-for-like competition.

Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Pedro Neto.

Both attackers are left-footed right-wingers which ensures build-up and attacking structure remains the same, with the wingers thriving in 1v1 scenarios where they can chop back onto their strong foot or go to the byline for a cutback.

Creativity is an attribute that both individuals possess, with Saka excelling at shot-creating actions per game (5.14), key passes (2.79) and assists (0.44), via FBref.

Also, bearing in mind that Neto plays in a far less dominant side, he produces almost identical numbers, 4.37 shot-creating actions per 90 minutes, 2.54 key passes, and 0.71 assists. Each statistic above puts the two players in the top 90 percentile in the Premier League for those actions.

The only aspect of Neto’s game that doesn’t compare to Saka’s right now is his output in front of goal, only netting one goal this season, with the England international scoring four. However, Neto has proven he can still tear Premier League defences to shreds.

Indeed, he is more of a creator this campaign and has registered the most assists in the top flight, 7, which is two more than Arsenal’s star boy.

It is quite clear why Mikel Arteta views Pedro Neto as the perfect Saka back-up.

PIF eyeing Newcastle move to sign "quality" £40m+ new star for Eddie Howe

As solid as Newcastle United have been this season, with their latest victory over Manchester United in the Premier League another highlight, they have been caught out at times for their lack of squad depth. The injuries have continued to pile up, including Nick Pope's most recent long-term blow to hand Eddie Howe yet another headache in an attempt to balance both domestic and European action.

As things stand, the Magpies are on course to finish outside of the top four in what could reflect badly on their summer transfer window. Keen to avoid a similar mistake next season, PIF are reportedly already eyeing up reinforcements, including one particular star defender.

Newcastle transfer news

At the time, the Magpies' summer business seemed good enough to get the job done. Ever since, however, that has not proved to be the case. Sandro Tonali is at the beginning of a 10-month ban for breaching betting rules, whilst Harvey Barnes has struggled with injuries, leaving Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento to carry the torch for summer arrivals who are impressing. Having suffered several injuries to force Dan Burn out of position and into centre-back, before he was sidelined, it's clear that the Magpies need defensive reinforcements. And they could get exactly that in the form of one star player next summer.

According to Sport via Sport Witness, Newcastle are eyeing a move for Jean-Clair Todibo next summer alongside Premier League rivals Chelsea. The deal will not be cheap, however, with Nice reportedly starting their price at €50m (£42m) and demanding more from there.

Jean-Clair Todibo

It doesn't seem as though the hefty fee will put the English clubs off, with both Newcastle and Chelsea reportedly ready to meet Nice's demands if Todibo is still at the club in the summer transfer window.

Todibo has the "quality" that Newcastle need

A former Barcelona defender who is now impressing in Ligue 1, Todibo is the type of player that Newcastle should be targeting if they want to qualify for the Champions League for a second time under Howe. Todibo's stats show that he is more than capable of going stride for stride with the current backline at St James' Park too.

Given the numbers, it's clear that Tobido may not just come in as cover at Newcastle, but he'd be entering with a challenge for either Botman or Schar when it comes to keeping their place. It's no surprise that Nice manager Francesco Farioli was keen to sing the defender's praises amid links with a move away in the summer, saying:

“These rumours have existed since the start, so we’ve developed antibodies against them – be it the team or myself. There are a few days left – we’ll see. There is a chance that he stays, and I would be happy because he’s a quality player and he would be very hard to replace. I hope the rumours stay rumours."

Grade cricket gives David Warner 'perspective' outside Australia 'bubble'

The banned Australia batsman came up against his former captain Steven Smith in a club match in Sydney

David Warner has not contemplated the prospect of his year-long ban from international cricket for ball-tampering being reduced, as he continues his time in grade cricket, which he said had brought him “perspective” after living in a “bubble”.Warner took the field alongside Steven Smith for the first time since the ball-tampering scandal at Newlands in March, as their respective grade teams Randwick Petersham and Sutherland, faced off in a 50-over match at Coogee Oval in Sydney. The pair chatted regularly during the game and shared what appeared as a warm handshake after the match. Warner insisted that talk of the pair having fallen out over what happened, and claims that he had thrown Smith under a bus by not accepting enough blame, was “comedy.”The last couple of weeks have brought more significant changes in Australian cricket in the wake of events in South Africa following the cultural reviews. The Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) has made a submission to Cricket Australia that the bans handed to Warner, Smith and Cameron Bancroft should be rescinded in light of the findings, which painted the entire Australian cricket set-up in a dim light.”I’m sitting here with 12 months on the sidelines, that’s the way I look at it,” Warner said as he spoke for the first time in Australia since his emotional press conference on returning from South Africa. “That’s why I want everyone to keep being positive about the guys who are playing [for Australia]. We can’t just sit here and keep saying ‘are they are going to be in or not’.”There’s going to be some negative impact with what happened, but we have to put our best foot forward to make sure Australians are enjoying cricket. We put our hands up, we were ashamed of what happened, but we are here to try and promote cricket. We are trying to get Australians back loving it.”Warner’s time in grade cricket has not been without controversy, however, when he made headlines for briefly walking off the pitch during a match against Western Suburbs, having taken offence to a sledge from Jason Hughes, the brother of Phillip. He later resumed his innings, going on to make a hundred, but it put Warner firmly back in the spotlight.Of the experience of dropping down to a lower level, Warner said it had been a reality check playing alongside people with weekday jobs who have to fit their twice-weekly training around earning a living and then commit their weekends to playing.”You pinch yourself a little when you walk in the changing room and the guys are talking about the working week,” Warner said. “It puts it in perspective, we have been living in a bubble for a long time.”Of what there is little doubt is that plenty of people still want to watch Warner and Smith, who both spent considerable timing mingling with fans. The match drew a crowd well in excess of 2000 by the time Smith emerged to bat in the run chase, with every possible vantage point taken around the picturesque ground. Multiple trips were required to the local supermarket to replenish the barbecue while the bar needed plenty of extra crates – a large number donated by Warner.Neither player managed to cut loose with the bat: Warner was caught at backward point for 13 and Smith was stumped for 48, having struggled to find his timing. But the crowd was treated to some thunderous hitting from Shane Watson, a century by Kent’s Daniel Bell-Drummond and a match-winning hand from Austin Waugh, the son of Steve. Waugh had earlier been the man to dismiss Warner, as Smith’s Sutherland team came out the winners with two balls remaining. When they are back together for Australia still remains to be seen.

Billy Godleman's determination holds Derbyshire together

In more bowler-friendly conditions than Derbyshire’s last home match, the captain stood firm for four-and-a-half hours

ECB Reporters Network04-Sep-2018
ScorecardDerbyshire captain Billy Godleman continued his recent impressive run of form with 95 to steer his side to respectability on the opening day of the Division Two match against Glamorgan at Derby.Godleman, who had scored a century and 71 in his previous four innings, passed 4000 first-class runs for the county as Derbyshire made 251 with their former seamer Graham Wagg taking three wickets.Timm van der Gugten also claimed three wickets and in reply, Glamorgan were 20 without loss when bad light ended play early.Derbyshire’s previous home game had been a batting feast with more than 1300 runs scored but conditions here provided help for the bowlers throughout with the floodlights on from ball one.Given the overcast skies and a green tinged pitch, it was no surprise the toss was uncontested and Tom Lace had already been dropped in the slips before he shouldered arms and lost his off stump to one that came back a long way from van der Gugten.van der Gugten also saw Wayne Madsen put down at point before he had scored in the same over but he clipped Michael Hogan tamely to mid-wicket and when Alex Hughes was caught behind trying to withdraw his bat, Derbyshire were wobbling at 50 for 3.Godleman was beaten several times but showed typical determination along with an awareness of any movement in the media centre to ensure his team posted what looks a competitive total.Gary Wilson shared a stand of 52 but was lbw playing no shot to the last ball of the morning to give David Lloyd his 50th first-class wicket and Matt Critchley batted positively until he played across the line at Hogan.Kieran Bull, in his first game for three years, was rewarded for an impressive spell of controlled offspin when Harvey Hussein was lured down the pitch and after tea was taken early because of rain, former Derbyshire allrounder Wagg had Martin Andersson lbw on his Championship debut following his loan move from Middlesex.Godleman had been in for 270 minutes but with a century beckoning, he dabbed at a wide ball from Wagg and was caught behind.Wagg quickly pinned Lockie Ferguson lbw but Tony Palladino and Ravi Rampaul guided Derbyshire to an unlikely second batting point before Glamorgan were left with 13 overs to negotiate. It was always likely to be an awkward period for the openers but they survived six overs before bad light ended play with Glamorgan 231 runs behind.
