Tottenham identify "interesting" Romero replacement as Levy acts "quickly"

Tottenham Hotspur face the very real possibility of losing star defender Cristian Romero this summer, amid interest from La Liga, with chairman Daniel Levy and co already identifying an “interesting” replacement for the World Cup winner.

Cristian Romero's strong links to Atlético Madrid

Romero is almost certainly a target for Atlético Madrid and Diego Simeone this summer, going by the plethora of reports linking Spurs’ defender with a switch to the Wanda Metropolitano.

Broadcast giant Sky Sports have backed Atletico’s serious interest in Romero, while some reports even claim that Simeone has personally reached out to the 26-year-old in an effort to present him with the Spanish side’s project.

Tottenham were hoping to agree a new contract with Romero, but it is now believed that the South American is “pushing” to leave N17 amid interest from Atlético, prompting Levy to postpone all new contract talks (Graeme Bailey).

While the former Atalanta star is apparently keen to embark on a new chapter away from the north London side, Spurs won’t be selling him to Atlético or any other interested party on the cheap.

It is believed by some that Tottenham want around £60 million to sell Romero, so Atlético would need to fork out a hefty sum as Levy eyes a profit off his exit. Simeone may also face competition from his cross-town rivals, as it has also been reported that Real Madrid are considering Romero as an option to reinforce their own backline.

The centre-back was a sore miss for Ange Postecoglou before he finally came back from injury, and he’d be a sore miss next season unless Levy can find an adept replacement.

Tottenham identify "interesting" target to replace Cristian Romero

According to reports in Spain, Spurs could actually raid Atalanta again for Romero’s heir. Indeed, it is believed Tottenham have identified Isak Hien as a potentially “interesting” option, and the club are acting “quickly” to draw up their ideal transfer targets for the centre-back position ahead of next season.

Hien, who’s started 22 Serie A matches under Gian Piero Gasperini this season, has averaged an impressive 90% passing accuracy out of the back and Atalanta’s joint-highest number of blocks on average (WhoScored).

The Sweden international would also cost around £26 million for any club interested in his signing this summer, just over a year and a half after Atalanta signed him from Hellas Verona for just £8 million.

Hien’s value has more than tripled in just a season, highlighting how much he’s impressed, and perhaps why Tottenham are thinking of him to fill the potential Romero void.

Bangladesh could have done without constantly shuffling batting order, admits Shanto

Regular captain Shakib Al Hasan and the team management had defended the decision on previous occasions

Mohammad Isam11-Nov-2023Bangladesh stand-in captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has said the team would have been better without the constant rejigging of the batting order in the World Cup. This admission from a Bangladesh team member has come at the end of Bangladesh’s dim campaign, after regular captain Shakib Al Hasan and the management had defended the decision on previous occasions.Bangladesh changed their line-up for almost every game in the tournament. Past the two openers, Litton Das and Tanzid Hasan, it was too fluid. “To be honest, it is better if we don’t (shuffle the batting order) anymore,” Shanto said after the loss against Australia. “Sometimes you have to do (shuffle) against certain teams, according to their strengths. But I think the less we do it, (the better). There was a lot of (shuffling) in the World Cup but it was done with a positive intent. If we don’t do it at all, even better.”Related

The Bangladesh management had put a lot of faith in someone like Mehidy Hasan Miraz, whose surprising batting form led to his being shuttled up and down the order. While there was merit in using him to disrupt the opposition’s plans, it led to other more established players batting out of position. The move did not always pay off either, especially against better bowling attacks. He played at No. 3 against Afghanistan, New Zealand and Netherlands, displacing Shanto, whose success with the bat in all formats in the 12 months leading into the World Cup was all at No. 3.The likes of Towhid Hridoy and Shakib too didn’t have fixed batting positions. Hridoy was groomed as an ODI No. 5 and had been playing in the position since his debut earlier this year, but he mostly batted at No. 7 in this World Cup. His best innings came against Australia, when he was sent in at No. 4.Earlier in the tournament, Shanto himself had defended the tactics, saying the players were “comfortable with it”Assistant coach Nic Pothas, too, had explained that such changes were part of “modern cricket”. After Bangladesh went down to Netherlands in Kolkata, Shakib offered very little when asked why the in-form Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim were still batting down the order. Only after that loss did Bangladesh choose stability over experimentation, a move which is understood to have come about because the BCB president Nazmul Hasan had sent instruction to stop the shuffling.Even so, head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe said before the Sri Lanka game that batting in ODIs wasn’t dependent on batters’ positions but the time they came in to bat.The likes of Mahmudullah and Towhid Hridoy also played out of position in the World Cup•ICC via Getty ImagesThe batting order shuffle was not the only reason for Bangladesh’s underwhelming World Cup campaign. Shanto pointed out their inability to convert starts into big scores, and their struggles adapting from the slow and low pitches back home to the ones in India where the pace and bounce was a little truer. In the Pune match against Australia, Hridoy top-scored with 74, while rest of the other six specialist batters could not convert their starts. Shanto said that when the top-order doesn’t fire, it puts the rest of the batters under more pressure.”I don’t want to talk about individual players,” Shanto said. “We didn’t do well as a team. The top-order batters had more opportunities. If we had big scores from the top, we could have been in better positions. We are hopeful they will get big scores in the future.”Litton (Das) , (Tanzid Hasan) Tamim and myself all got starts. We couldn’t capitalise on most of them. Our target in the future is to make use of these starts. We are saying it again and again, but we have to do it. We need to practice accordingly. Play on certain types of wickets. I am hopeful that this World Cup will help us in the future.”Shanto himself has not had a great World Cup, especially compared to his pre-tournament form. He made 222 runs at 27.75 with just two fifties and bagged two first-ball ducks. However, in not sugarcoating either his own or his team’s performances, Shanto has shown the kind of straight talk that a good leader is known for. The BCB high-ups are considering him for Test captaincy later this month.”We couldn’t win either of the matches that I captained,” he said. “There was pressure to handle against two big teams. I think there was a lot to learn, which will help me in the future. I have been leading teams for a while now. I think personally I am ready (for captaincy). If the opportunity presents itself, I will try to do it well.”

India avoid an encore of the bad old days

This was an important day for India even though it won’t have much say on this Test

Sidharth Monga26-Aug-20213:10

Maninder Singh: Ishant Sharma seemed to be lacking in confidence

This day of cricket was supposed to be a rude reality check for the utterly pampered and spoiled followers of Indian cricket who started post 2015. They had been bowled out for 78, the pitch had flattened out, the opposition had got off to a start and there was a long day staring them in the face. They knew they couldn’t bowl as full as England did because any assistance from the pitch had vanished. They knew the batters were under no scoreboard pressure. This was the kind of day that had become commonplace watching India’s rag-tag bowling attack in 2011 and 2011-12. It was as though India were providing writing and meme material to Sacred Games: “utho, nahao, pito, so jao (wake up, take a bath, get hit, go back to sleep).” Such a day was feared in Australia earlier this year when almost all of India’s first-choice bowling unit was out with injury. It didn’t materialise. For patches on day two, especially when Ishant Sharma was having his rare bad Test, it seemed finally the sufferers of 2011 and 2011-12 might be able to tell younger followers, this is what it feels like. And still, India came out with 303 for 8, which, in isolation, is not a bad effort at all in the best batting conditions of the series and in a match situation where there is no pressure on the batters. Five wickets in the final session is something they can even be proud of.Related

These days are a lose-lose day. If you bowl a side out on such a day, it is probably worse news for your team because that means batting in the second innings is not going to be easy. So all you hope for is to stick to restrictive plans and slowly work towards the odd wicket.Only problem is, Ishant was truly off colour. Ishant was having perhaps his first ordinary Test in seven years. He was cut away for three boundaries in his first four overs. The last time he conceded more than three boundaries in a whole Test – to the cut shot – was in December 2017*. It doesn’t need GPS trackers to know he was slower in his run-up than he probably has ever been. The speeds were down too. He bowled 22 overs without a maiden, the longest an opening bowler has gone without one in England since 2002.All bar four of Ishant’s dearer spells than this came before 2015. That he has had to be so drastically off rhythm to be reminded of those bad old days is testament to his turnaround. Those bad old days were when often he would be the only bowler fit enough to toil for long spells. Here he had Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah to pick up the slack. In an innings that Ishant and Mohammed Siraj drew a mistake once every 10 balls or slower, Bumrah and Shami kept doing so once an over.Mohammed Shami celebrates a wicket with team-mates•Getty ImagesShami of late has become a bowler whom you can wake up in the middle of the night and he will run up and start bowling with an upright seam on the shorter part of the good-length band. If Shami doesn’t draw any movement from a pitch, you can call an excavation party, you won’t find it. The only drawback with Shami on days like this one is that he is an aggressive bowler and keeps attacking the stumps. Over time, though, he has eliminated some of the deliveries that used to end up on leg.The Rory Burns wicket he took was a perfect illustration: hitting top of off after seaming the ball in. Jonny Bairstow went fishing outside off, and Jos Buttler fell to the leg trap. If Shami brought the run rate down through wickets, Bumrah was more methodical. He just bowled lengths that were hard to hit, resulting in 10 maidens out of 27 and an economy rate of 2.14 in an innings that went at 3.27 an over.Joe Root has been batting like a dream, averaging 126.75 in the series, but Bumrah has dismissed him three times for an average of 33. All three have been great deliveries, making him play without being full, moving the ball each way. Twice coming into this Test, it had been outside edges; at Leeds he managed to go past the inside edge from a similar pitching point. This was an important day for India even though it won’t have much say on this Test. Any salvaging process will have to start with the bat. But this is the start of three back-to-back Tests, and India would have hated to be kept in the field for two days. It is hard to make a comeback in a series after successive bad days in the field; imagine if England had made it three in a row.Shami said it was a day when it is the bowler’s responsibility to not let their heads go down, but to keep finding a way to make it difficult for the batters. While Ishant’s fitness and form will be a matter of concern, the two big fast bowlers managed to achieve that fairly well given the conditions and match situation. In the process they avoided an encore of the bad old days.

Chelsea bid £62m to sign Nico Williams amid update on Athletic Club future

Chelsea have now submitted an opening bid for Athletic Club forward Nico Williams, amid a new update on his future at the La Liga club.

The Blues already have a plethora of attacking options, having invested heavily during the summer transfer window, with Jamie Gittens grabbing his first Premier League assist of the season in the 2-0 victory against Burnley on Saturday afternoon.

Gittens set up fellow winger Pedro Neto with a perfectly weighted ball from the left, before Enzo Fernandez sealed all three points with just minutes left to play, moving the Blues up to second in the Premier League in the process.

After the disappointing 2-1 defeat against Sunderland at the end of October, Enzo Maresca’s side look like they are starting to click, and there may be an outside chance they could even compete for the title, although BlueCo may need to strengthen the squad in January to make that dream a reality.

Chelsea submit opening offer for Nico Williams

According to a report from Spain, Chelsea have now submitted an opening offer of €70m (£62m) for Athletic Club star Williams, and they are willing to triple the winger’s salary in order to tempt him into a January move to Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have been working on a deal for weeks, and they are now confident they will be able to get it over the line soon, with the 23-year-old being identified as a key target, although there is set to be competition for his signature.

Tottenham Hotspur have now matched the west Londoners’ offer for the Spain international, with it being revealed his future at Athletic Club is ‘more open than ever’, amid interest from two of the Premier League’s top sides.

There are question marks over whether the Athletic Club star would be a necessary signing, given that Maresca already has a wide array of attacking options, as Chelsea have been obsessed with signing young forwards with high potential.

However, the Pamplona-born forward has certainly impressed in both Spain and Europe over the past three seasons, indicating he could be capable of displacing Gittens in the starting XI at left-wing.

The Spaniard was also one of the stars of Euro 2024, scoring two goals and picking up one assist as his side went on to defeat England 2-1 in the final, while Statman Dave was left particularly impressed by his performance against Georgia in the round of 16.

As such, Williams, who is regarded as one of the best wingers in the world, could be a solid signing for Chelsea, as they look to mount an outside push for the Premier League title.

Cubs Ace Justin Steele to Have Elbow Surgery, Miss Rest of 2025 Season

The Chicago Cubs just took a body blow.

According to ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan, Cubs lefty Justin Steele will miss the remainder of the 2025 season as he is set to undergo reconstructive elbow surgery. It is unclear whether Steele will have a full Tommy John surgery or a more minor repair surgery.

Steele was an All-Star in 2023 and finished fifth in Cy Young Award voting. He finished the year 16–5 in 30 starts, with a 3.06 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and 176 strikeouts against 36 walks in 173 1/3 innings. He was solid again in 2024, as he went 5–5 with a 3.07 ERA, and a 1.10 WHIP in 134 2/3 innings over 24 starts.

Early this season, Steele is 3–1 with a 4.76 ERA in four starts.

The 29-year-old had Tommy John surgery in 2017 as a minor leaguer, so this will be his second major elbow injury.

Steele was expected to combine with Shota Imanaga to lead Chicago's pitching staff this season. His absence will leave a massive hole at the top of the team's rotation.

Ratcliffe readying drastic Sancho action to save £10m+ for Man Utd

Manchester United and Sir Jim Ratcliffe are now ready to take drastic action to move Jadon Sancho on from the club in 2026.

Sancho struggling on loan at Aston Villa

The Red Devils winger is under contract until the end of the season, although there is an option to extend that by a further 12 months to protect his value after joining for £70m.

Sancho has not played in the Premier League for Man Utd since 2023 and has had loan spells at Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea and now Aston Villa, where he is for the 2025/26 season.

However, the 25-year-old has struggled to make an impact at Villa Park, playing just 69 minutes of top flight football in the current campaign.

Sancho did come on for Villa in the first half in the recent 1-0 win against Man City, although he was then substituted in the closing stages by Unai Emery, who said it was “embarrassing” for the attacker.

Yet to start for Villa in the Premier League, Man Utd will soon have a decision to make, extend Sancho’s contract until 2027 or allow him to leave for free.

Man Utd ready to let Sancho leave for £0

As reported by talkSPORT, Man Utd and Ratcliffe are resigned to losing Sancho for free in 2026 instead of triggering the clause in his contract to protect his transfer value.

The Red Devils are willing to cut their losses on Sancho one year ahead of schedule, saving £200,000-a-week in wages which works out at more than £10m for the 2026/27 season.

Of course, that means United won’t receive a transfer fee next year for the “crazy talent”, bringing to an end what has been a woeful Old Trafford stint.

Sancho has scored 12 goals in 83 appearances for Man Utd, registering six assists and playing just over 5,000 minutes in a Red Devils shirt.

Earlier in 2025, Ratcliffe called Sancho a “thing from the past” alongside the likes of Antony, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund, players who INEOS were still “buying” after their transfers under the Glazers.

“If you look at the players we are buying this summer, that we didn’t buy, we’re buying Antony, we’re buying Casemiro, we’re buying Onana, we’re buying Hojlund, we’re buying Sancho. These are all things from the past, whether we like it or not, we’ve inherited those things and have to sort that out.

“For Sancho, who now plays for Chelsea and we pay half his wages, we’re paying £17m to buy him in the summer. It takes time for us to move away from the past into a new place in the future.”

Fergie said Man Utd flop would reach Neville's level but he left for £2.5m
