Wins for Free State and North West in the Standard Bank Cup

The Standard Bank Cup, the premier South African Domestic limited overs competition, got off to a flyer with 975 runs being scored in the two opening matches played on 8 November

Keith Lane09-Nov-2002The Standard Bank Cup, the premier South African Domestic limited overs competition, got off to a flyer with 975 runs being scored in the two opening matches played on 8 November.Easterns, the recently crowned first class champions, were beaten by North West in Potchefstroom with Arno Jacobs walking away with the man of the match award after scoring 118. A 123 run partnership with Davey Jacobs set the Dragons up for a total of 259/8 in their allotted 45 overs. In reply the Easterns ended 22 runs short after starting off well. Two quick run outs, that of Zander de Bruyn and Derek Crookes, put a stop to the flow of runs with Easterns finishing on 237/9.In Bloemfontein the home team was set up for their 59 run win, and a bonus point, with Morne van Wyk becoming one of only a hand full of players to score 150 runs in a domestic limited overs match. A partnership of 146 with Jimmy Adams, ending on 64, allowed Free State Eagles to reach 249/4.A good start from Adam Bacher (54), Daryll Cullinan (30) and 28 from Warren Dugmore was all that Gauteng could offer in resistance eventually bowled out for 210.With a shortened season bonus points are going to play a major roll in finalising the semi-finalists come January 2003. Free State will be well pleased to have started on a good wicket.

Lymington to put pressure on leaders Easton

Easton & Martyr Worthy are currently 12 points clear of United Services at the top of the Southern Electric Premier League Division 2 – but their lofty status could be put under pressure at Lymington, 1pm

Mike Vimpany (as published in Daily Echo)28-Jun-2002Easton & Martyr Worthy are currently 12 points clear of United Services at the top of the Southern Electric Premier League Division 2 – but their lofty status could be put under pressure at Lymington, 1pm.The villagers have lost their West Indian all-rounder Keith Brewster, who has received an army posting to Scotland, and play on Lymington’s flat batting strip without effective opening bowler Trevor Yates, who picked up a leg injury last week.Lymington, in a mid-table fifth spot, are an unpredictable side, packed with batting and three spin bowling options.Lower-order performer Mike West underlined his pedigree with a sparkling century for Lymington in midweek – but whether it gets him a higher slot in the batting order remains to be seen.Lymington name a squad of 13, as teenage middle-order batsman Matt Malloy damaged a finger dropping a catch in midweek and may be ruled out.United Services go to Sparsholt, whose ranks are weakened by the absence of bowlers Mike Ball (groin) and Carl Nicols (broken toe), who both pulled up lame in last week’s 345-run mauling by Old Tauntonians & Romsey.Key all-rounder Ian Tulk is unavailable for OTs derby at Winchester, while Hampshire 2nd XI coach Tony Middleton plans to delay selection for the Academy’s home match against relegation troubled Trojans on the Rose Bowl Nursery ground.Middleton, who helped engineer a dramatic one-wicket win at US last week, has several of his more experienced teenagers back from university and may give James Schofield a break from league action.South African medium-pace bowler David Pryke has been re-registered by Hungerford and may play against bottom side Rowledge.Alton, who climbed to the Premier Division 3 summit by beating St Cross Symondians last week, expect off-spinner Matt Ireson back against Leckford, who ran up 334 last week. Spinner Chris White misses Leckford’s visit to the Jubilee Ground.Purbrook, beaten by both Bashley II and Paultons in the past fortnight, aim to halt a hat-trick of defeats at Hartley Wintney, who are scoring plenty of runs – but regularly concede 200-plus totals themselves.Hampshire’s Jimmy Adams expects to get the St Cross call at Hambledon, while in-form Bournemouth University graduate Paul Batchelor takes over from Saints skipper Jason Dodd as third-placed Flamingo bid to make it five wins in a rowagainst Waterlooville.New Milton’s Division 3 bid was knocked off course by Bashley (Rydal) II last week, so victory at Paultons tomorrow is essential if a promotion challenge is to be sustained. But Paultons are unpredictable. Struggling for runs all season, they posted 275 to knock Purbrook off the top of the table last week.Shock side Bashley II, who have gunned down both Purbrook and New Milton in the past fortnight, go to Hursley Park, with bottom side Redlynch & Hale preparing to go to Ventnor without several first choice players.

The long and short of it

Merv Dillon against VVS Laxman – India first innings at Jamaica
© CricInfoFor a bowler groomed to be the spearhead of the West Indian paceattack, Merv Dillon went an unusually long time without a fivewicket haul. After his 5-111 at Karachi in December 1997, Dillonsuffered such a drought that he must have felt considerableempathy with Ramnaresh Sarwan, a teammate who also had problemsin notching up a statistical milestone. But while Sarwan remainswithout a Test century to his credit, Dillon got his 5-71 in theIndian first innings at Jamaica.Dillon’s bowling in the two Indian innings presents aninteresting study in contrasts. When India got out for 212, hepicked wickets with extreme alacrity, at the top of the order aswell as the middle. In India’s second essay, however, with thepressure on the batting team, Dillon could only manage one wicketfor 77 runs in 22.3 overs – that too of Zaheer Khan on the finalday with the second new ball.To analytically compare the performances, take Dillon’s head-tohead against the best batsman in either innings. In India’s 212,VVS Laxman top-scored with an unbeaten 65 off 152 balls, withseven fours. Dillon, however, conceded only 18 of those runs;Laxman just managed to nudge the fast bowler around for paltryruns.
Merv Dillon against Sachin Tendulkar – India second innings at Jamaica
© CricInfoEight of Laxman’s runs against Dillon came in the third-man area, and that is telling. As was warranted on a fast, bouncy pitch,Dillon effectively dug the ball in just short of driving length, and Laxman could only score by gliding the ball twice to thethird-man boundary for four. For the rest of the 42 deliveries,Dillon was spot-on, and Laxman could just sneak singles and twos.Admittedly Laxman at the time was under more pressure than SachinTendulkar in the second innings, and admittedly Tendulkar is amore versatile player. But Dillon conceded 30 runs in 39 balls toTendulkar, 22 of them coming in front of square. Tendulkar droveDillon with ease, a direct result of the fast bowler pitchingfurther up when, on the pacy Sabina Park pitch, he should havedone exactly what he did in the first innings – jag it in shorterand let the track do the rest.If Dillon encountered some hitches with his length, ShivnarineChanderpaul showed Zen-like mastery over that very quality. NamedMan of the Series, Chanderpaul set a new record for the longestinterval between two dismissals. In racking up scores of 67 notout, 101 not out, 136 not out and 58, the Guyanese batsmantormented the Indians for 1,513 minutes in all before JavagalSrinath had him caught behind at Sabina Park. Perhapsunsurprisingly, India, along with Zimbabwe, bore the brunt of theprevious record as well when Jacques Kallis tallied 1,241 minutesearlier this year.

Hampshire Cricketers to wear numbered shirts in Championship

Hampshire Cricket will break with tradition once again this summer – by wearing football-style shirts in the Frizzell County Championship.

Simon Walters (Daily Echo)07-Apr-2002Hampshire Cricket will break with tradition once again this summer – by wearing football-style shirts in the Frizzell County Championship.Chairman Rod Bransgrove has already succeeded in turning Hampshire County Cricket Club into Hampshire Cricket, the cricketing arm of the county circuit’s first public limited company. And last month a public offering of shares was made in Rose Bowl plc with Bransgrove and chief executive Graham Walker hopeful of raising £5 million. But the decision to wear named and numbered shirts in the four-day game is not unprecedented.Lancashire had them on the back of special fleece shirts last year and pioneered the idea with safety pins more than 50 years ago.Now Robin Smith’s men will follow suit, although traditionalists will be pleased to know that the woollen jumpers will remain the same as the names would become unreadable once put through the wash!Chairman Rod Bransgrove first unveiled the plan at the AGM two months ago but Hampshire Cricket have now been given the go-ahead by the ECB and the players will wear the shirts for the first time when they begin the season at Kent in 13 days’ time.Director of cricket Tim Tremlett said: “Lancashire used numbered shirts in the championship last year where it went down particularly well with members and players.”I gather they are used a lot in South Africa as well and they have obviously been a success in the one day game.”Players are quite hard to distinguish from the stands and batsmen can be particularly hard to make out when they are wearing helmets so this should be a great help to spectators.”It also means that the players will have no excuse for picking up the wrong shirt in the dressing room!”

Walker looking to improve his performance by being himself

Recalled New Zealand leg-spinner Brooke Walker was put through the grinder at Sharjah last year and will be heading back into the cauldron after his selection in teams for Sharjah and both one-dayers and Tests in Pakistan today

Lynn McConnell01-Apr-2002Recalled New Zealand leg-spinner Brooke Walker was put through the grinder at Sharjah last year and will be heading back into the cauldron after his selection in teams for Sharjah and both one-dayers and Tests in Pakistan today.Walker, 25, has taken the place of Daniel Vettori, who has been ruled out of the tour on medical advice as part of a managed programme to assist his rehabilitation from a stress fracture to his back.Walker said today that his immediate goal was to improve on his last tour to Sharjah where he felt he was guilty of trying to mix his pace up in a bid to match the way Muttiah Muralitharan was able to turn the ball square on the flat pitches.”I will try to bowl the way I normally do,” he said.”I have to bowl more consistently, line and length, and more at the pace I regularly bowl at,” he said.Walker said he felt he had sorted out his bowling around the time the State Shield series finished in early February and that he had gone back a little since then. However, he will spend some time with his old club coach Rowan Armour who has helped him a lot in his career so far, before the team leaves for Sharjah on Saturday. It will be a tight time frame but Walker is confident that the adjustment he needs to make is a small one.International selection wasn’t on Walker’s mind in what had been a busy personal season, and something of a triumph. In his first year as Auckland captain, he led the side to victory in the first State Championship and took 28 wickets at an average of 24.75. His career figures now show him having 120 wickets at 30.70 in his 55 first-class matches. On the one-day scene the figures are not so impressive with only three wickets at 83 in his seven matches to date and at an economy rate of 5.79. His best One-Day International bowling was two for 43 off nine overs against South Africa at Cape Town.”It has been a rewarding experience as captain. It was quite hard and I was learning all the way through the series.”But as a captain I wanted to be positive and I had 11 other guys looking to me for leadership.”He said his team-mates had been supportive and with some talented young players coming into the side he had been conscious of helping them develop belief and confidence and to relax in the first-class environment. It was a struggle to bowl himself at times, but he said Matt Horne, who returned to the side from Otago this year and who had captaincy experience of his own, had been invaluable in letting him know that it was time he came on to bowl.Walker went into the season looking to work on some aspects of his bowling and he felt it had worked out well but he said he had “gone off the boil” after the one-day programme which had been disappointing.Selection has also meant he has had to put his career away from the cricket field on hold. He was looking to get involved in real estate marketing and was due to have some interviews but they would now have to wait until at least the end of the tour to Sharjah and the Test tour of Pakistan, and all going well, possibly the tour to the West Indies.Walker said it had been good to go away after his first taste of international play last summer and to learn about his art a little more and he thought that overall his leg-spin had advanced nicely.

Pakistan to name squad for England today

The Pakistan cricket team for next month’s tour to England will benamed on Tuesday evening, officials said, adding that the announcementof the coach will be announced later

24-Apr-2001The Pakistan cricket team for next month’s tour to England will benamed on Tuesday evening, officials said, adding that the announcementof the coach will be announced later. The chairman of selectors Wasim Bari said Monday that he was informedby the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) that all the players were declaredfit by the panel of doctors and were now available for selection.Bari, however, said the team would be finalized and handed over to thePCB on Tuesday. He said he would be submitting a 16-man squad for thetwo-Test series while team for the tri-nation oneday series would benamed later.Bari indicated there was a possibility that an additional player mightbe sent to England. As things continued to remain complex and intriguing, former captainsWasim Akram and Moin Khan were left facing the axe in the backdrop ofrecent happenings.Wasim Akram, after a dismal performance in the two Tests againstEngland at home, failed to take part in the three-Test series againstNew Zealand because of inter-coastal injury. Nevertheless, sources sayskipper Waqar Younis was strongly opposing the selection of Wasimthough the vote of the chief selector was in the left-armer’s favour.Rashid Latif is being favoured over Moin because of Waqar’s firmbelief in the talent of the former who first blew the whistle ofbetting and match-fixing in Pakistan cricket. Not surprisingly injury prone and joy-rider, Shoaib Akhtar has onceagain been assured of a place in the squad after returning unfit fromthe tour to New Zealand in February. Brig Rana admitted that Shoaibneither appeared before the panel of doctors nor played in the ongoing one-dayers on the pretext that he was suffering from stomachupset.Likely 16:Waqar Younis (captain), Inzamam-ul-Haq (vice-captain), Saeed Anwar,Yousuf Youhana, Abdur Razzaq, Azhar Mahmood, Mohammad Sami, FaisalIqbal, Younis Khan, Mohammad Wasim, Imran Farhat, Rashid Latif(wicketkeeper), Shoaib Akhtar, Fazle Akbar and Mushtaq Ahmad, SaqlainMushtaq.

Southampton will be happy with Hasenhuttl

Those in charge at Southampton will be pleased with the job Ralph Hasenhuttl is doing, claims former midfielder Carlton Palmer.

After a promising start to the season, which saw Southampton even go top of the table at one stage, the Saints really fell off in the second half of the campaign before finishing in 15th place.

Hasenhuttl looks set to continue in the St. Mary’s dugout, however, with talkSPORT’s Alex Crook (via This Is Futbol) recently claiming that the Austrian’s job is “very safe”.

And looking at the context of Southampton’s season, Palmer can understand why that is the case. Speaking on the matter, the former Saints player told FFC:

“I think they’re [the board] happy for them to be in the Premier League. I think they’ll be happy for them to be around, you know, halfway, just below halfway.

“He [Hasenhuttl] created the problem of the expectations because they were doing so well, at the top of the league, and people get carried away. So, for sure, I don’t see any reason why he should be leaving Southampton.”

Hasenhuttl did manage to take Southampton to an FA Cup semi-final this season, while his high-pressing football, the team’s ability to get the ball quickly back from the opposition, gets fans roaring.

The Saints have never really been in any serious relegation trouble either, so it really is not hard to see why Hasenhuttl’s job is so secure right now.

Pochettino deal still some way off for Spurs

Speaking to Sky Sports (via Football Daily), journalist Kaveh Solhekol has dropped an update on Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Mauricio Pochettino.

The Lowdown: Pochettino talks held by Spurs

On Thursday morning, the Athletic broke seismic news of Pochettino’s talks with Spurs whilst also lifting the lid on his desire to make a return to north London.

However, the BBC also report that no such contact has been made with his club, Paris-Saint Germain, with the general consensus being that they will fight tooth and nail to keep him in the French capital.

As such, chairman Daniel Levy may face a serious fight to appoint him.

The Latest: Reporter drops Pochettino update

Sharing an update, Sky Sports reporter Solhekol has claimed he has ‘some more information’ and confirms that ‘this is not a done deal’.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/all-things-spurry/” title=”Spurs news and gossip!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

“We’ve just been able to get some more information in the last ten minutes or so,” he explained to the broadcaster (via Football Daily).

“I’ll just run through it quickly for you.

“First of all Spurs would love to have Mauricio Pochettino back as their manager, but this is not a done deal.

“One source this morning was telling us it very close to being done, another source just now saying that it is still some way off at the moment.”

The Verdict: Managerial merry-go-round…

As reports emerged on Thursday morning of Pochettino’s interest in taking the Spurs job and vice versa, they were quickly followed by reports from France dismissing them entirely.

This latest claim from Solhekol, whilst offering no encouragement of Tottenham appointing Pochettino imminently, at least reiterates interest from the Lilywhites in his sensational return to north London.

Spurs have apparently been looking for a new boss in the image of Pochettino to put the Jose Mourinho era behind them, and they won’t hire a boss any closer to that mould than the former fan favourite himself.

However, PSG’s firm stance and the fact he still has one year left on his deal at the Parc des Princes mean this move could be difficult to pull off.

In other news: Spurs now want to sign this ‘nearly unplayable’ star, find out more here.

Pakistan will be aiming to bounce back

In his latest CricInfo Diary entry, Alec Stewart looks ahead to the prospect of captaining England in the second and final Test against Pakistan at Old Trafford, and in the triangular one-day series which follows

Alec Stewart30-May-2001In his latest CricInfo Diary entry, Alec Stewart looks ahead to the prospect of captaining England in the second and final Test against Pakistan at Old Trafford, and in the triangular one-day series which follows.I didn’t have any doubts about taking on the England captaincy for the NatWest One-Day Series against Pakistan and Australia. I’ve done it on a number of occasions – the fact that I turned it down in Sri Lanka at the end of the Test series was purely because of the heat, the humidity and the conditions. I just didn’t feel I’d be able to do all three jobs to the right standard. In this country and most parts of the world there’s no problem. As to leading the side in the Second Test against Pakistan at Old Trafford, we’ve come away from a good win at Lord’s – I also captained the side that won at Lord’s last year. I’m fully aware that it’s a one-off game for me, and I’ll be doing my best to perform well with the bat and the gloves, and anything I can add as captain.I didn’t have any say on team selection. Nick Knight’s started the season very, very well – I remember batting with him for a length of time when he scored a hundred against Pakistan at Headingley four or five years ago. That was his first Test hundred, and I know he’ll be looking to make full use of his opportunity. We know Nasser Hussain will be back soon, but if Knight can score heavily in this game and have a good one-day series, that’s obviously a good way to stake a claim for a place in the Ashes series. At this stage we expect to play seven batsmen, so he can expect to play.As to my own form, I copped a first ball in the B & H, which can happen, but obviously very happy to have scored a hundred in the CricInfo Championship game in between the Test Matches. It’s always nice to spend some time in the middle, and I feel I’ve been hitting the ball well all season. We can’t lose the series against Pakistan, but any games we go into we try to win. This one will be no different. We know that they’re a good side and will bounce back, and I suggest that if there’s one ground in England that they could choose to play us on it would be Old Trafford – there’s always been reverse swing there in the past, which they enjoy; the wicket can turn, and they’ve got quality spinners, and there’ll be strong Pakistani support in the area. It’s been a terrible start to the summer at Old Trafford – Lancashire have just had one one-day game there so far, against Glamorgan. But Pakistan will be looking to make it one all there. We’ll be going for two nil at best, or at worst draw the game and win the series.
