Gareth Bale not planning Spurs return

Tottenham Hotspur were made aware ‘weeks ago’ that Gareth Bale was not planning to extend his loan spell for a second season, a report from The Athletic has revealed.

The lowdown

The Welshman temporarily returned to north London for the 2020/21 season, seven years on from his then-world record £85m move to Real Madrid.

Bale scored 11 goals and added another two assists in just 10 Premier League starts (via WhoScored). He netted a further five times in the cup competitions, finishing as Tottenham’s third highest-scorer behind Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

There have been changes in management at both clubs involved in the loan deal, however. Spurs sacked Jose Mourinho in April, while Real Madrid have brought back Carlo Ancelotti after the departure of Zinedine Zidane.

The latest

Bale was left frustrated by the lack of starting opportunities afforded to him at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Sources close to the player feel he was ‘badly mismanaged’, in particular during Mourinho’s tenure. [The Athletic]

He doesn’t intend to come back to Spurs for the 2021/22 season and is said to have ruled out another loan move away from Madrid. MLS clubs are apparently ‘investigating their prospects’ of a blockbuster transfer. [The Athletic]

The verdict

The £16.2m-rated Bale scored or assisted every 87 minutes for Spurs last season, which does suggest that he was under-utilised by Mourinho.

He once again underlined his class at the Euros, with a pair of assists in Wales’ vital 2-0 win over Turkey which effectively put them into the last 16.

The 31-year-old certainly seems to still have plenty to offer in European football and he may harbour hopes of resurrecting his Real Madrid career, but remaining at Spurs could have been an attractive and mutually beneficial option had he been given the game-time he felt he deserved.

Melhorou no segundo e fez boa jogada no terceiro gol.

5,0 -Maicon

É o cérebro do time.

Grande jogada e assistência no quarto gol. Bateu o escanteio do quinto.

8,0 -Gilberto

Defesa ainda deixou a desejar.

Stewart given England captaincy for Second Test

Alec Stewart has been appointed England captain for the second and final npower Test Match against Pakistan at Old Trafford which starts on Thursday week. Stewart took over the captaincy midway through the First Test at Lord’s, when Nasser Hussain sustained a thumb injury which has ruled him out of cricket for the next three to four weeks.Stewart said: “I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to captain England on a temporary basis at Old Trafford. It’s a great honour to lead your country, and I much look forward to the game”.Stewart is unworried by the prospect of adding the responsibilities of captaincy to his existing dual role of England batsman and wicketkeeper. “I had no problem with that when I was England skipper for the first time. I did all three jobs during the 1998 Test series against South Africa, which England won. And when you’re put in charge of a good side that’s been winning, it obviously makes captaincy that much easier.”No decision has yet been made on who will captain England in the NatWest Triangular one-day series between England, Pakistan and Australia in June.

Crystal Palace linked to Patrick Vieira

Crystal Palace look set to miss out on managerial target Patrick Vieira as they continue to search for Roy Hodgson’s successor.

What’s the story?

Vieira’s agent had told Italian outlet Il Secolo XIX that his client is in contention to takeover Serie A outfit Sampdoria.

Claudio Ranieri is set to walk away from the Stadio Luigi Ferraris following a successful two-year stint at the club, leaving the door open for Vieira to return to the dugout.

Fans will be gutted

The news that the former Arsenal star is likely to no longer be an option will surely leave Steve Parish gutted as it reduces the number of candidates that he can choose from.

After an impressive stint in charge of MLS side New York City, the 44-year-old Frenchman took control of Nice in his homeland.

Things started well for the World Cup winner with Les Aiglons, recording respectable seventh and sixth-place finishes in Ligue 1 in his first two campaigns at the club.

However, the wheels started to fall off last season, and Vieira was sacked after overseeing five consecutive defeats. The final straw coming via a 3-2 defeat by Bayer Leverkusen that confirmed their exit from the Europa League.

Nice were sitting in 11th position in the top-flight table at the time of his dismissal, and a win rate of 45% throughout his managerial career shows that the young tactician has the potential to have a successful career in the hot seat.

Palace, though, appear to be prioritising a move for former Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo. While that may seem a sensible and popular decision, competition from Premier League rivals Everton means that Eagles chairman Steve Parish needs to keep his options wide open.

With several top teams across the continent competing for the top managers, the capital club’s hierarchy need to move quickly in order to secure their top target.

Vieira would have been a strong candidate for the role, given his familiarity with English football and his strong showing at NYCFC and Nice, but Parish will have to move on with his search with another potential candidate now off the table.

Spurs talks with Rangnick held

According to a report by the Guardian, Tottenham Hotspur have held a conversation with former FC Schalke boss Ralf Rangnick – but it’s ‘unclear’ whether talks were regarding the manager’s job or a director’s position.

The Lowdown: Rangnick on the candidate list

The 62-year-old has been loosely touted as an option over this last month, with the Athletic reporting back in late April that Spurs could indeed turn to Rangnick as credible candidate.

Reliable reporter Christian Falk (via Sport Witness) even claimed that Rangnick was offered the Spurs manager’s job and has held talks with both Manchester United and Everton in past seasons – so he’s no stranger to Premier League discussions.

The Latest: Tottenham hold Rangnick talks

Bringing the latest, the Guardian state there has been a conversation between Spurs and Rangnick – but it remains unclear whether the talks were regarding the managerial vacancy or a director’s position.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-gossip/” title=”Spurs gossip” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

They relay that the search for a new manager rumbles on but insist Rangnick has indeed been contacted.

As well as Rangnick, they believe Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick has also had talks with Tottenham.

The Verdict: Credible option for Spurs

While it is unclear whether this conversation was over the managerial vacancy, we believe that he more than stands out as a very credible candidate to become the next Lilywhites boss.

Having won two Austrian league titles with Red Bull Salzburg and three major trophies at Schlake (Transfermarkt), Rangnick isn’t exactly short of experience when it comes to winning silverware.

Lauded as a ‘perfectionist’ by former RB Leipzig striker Yussuf Poulsen (ESPN), the Independent claimed back in 2019 that Rangnick was interested in succeeding Mauricio Pochettino at Spurs.

He has been credited as a huge influence on some of the biggest managerial names in football, including Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel (ESPN).

Dubbed the godfather of gegenpressing, we believe Rangnick and Tottenham are a match made in heaven.

Exclusive: Marcus Bent says Ancelotti won’t be tempted by Tottenham job

Former Everton striker Marcus Bent has exclusively told Football FanCast that he’s been reliably informed that Carlo Ancelotti won’t be tempted by the Tottenham job.

Spurs remain in search for someone to replace Jose Mourinho following his departure last month, and the Italian’s name has been ambitiously thrown into the ring.

Reports earlier this year suggested that Ancelotti has admirers at Tottenham but Bent squashed any rumours of the former Chelsea manager taking over in north London.

The 61-year-old has only been in the Goodison Park hot seat for around 18 months, and has improved the squad quite considerably, although Everton’s dreadful home form is likely to cost them a place in Europe next season.

The Toffees have produced some excellent results on the road at Arsenal and West Ham, but their struggles at Goodison Park, most notably the defeat to Sheffield United, have left their destiny out of their own hands heading into the final few fixtures.

But regardless of whether Everton qualify for Europe, Bent told Football FanCast that he’s confident that Ancelotti will be sticking around:

“I spoke to my contacts at Everton, and they said he doesn’t seem the type to walk away from a contract.

“The money he is going to get to spend and the new stadium… I don’t think he will be going to Tottenham.”
