Bowling might takes Mumbai to No. 1

Mumbai have all but sealed a place in the top two after maintaining a clean sheet at home

The Report by Sidharth Monga15-May-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
On a slightly surreal night, Rahul Dravid lost his cool and shouted at the umpire, Kieron Pollard mocked Shane Watson so much he made him leave the dugout and go into the dressing room, Pollard was run out for the first time in the IPL, Mumbai Indians scored just 34 in the last five overs, but their bowling might won them the match comfortably and all but sealed a place in the top two. Mumbai and Chennai Super Kings now have one more win than Rajasthan Royals, and also a higher net run rate accumulated over 15 matches, which will take some doing to overcome.Mumbai might not have finished their innings well despite 59 off 37 balls from Aditya Tare, who had replaced the injured Sachin Tendulkar, but it was their start with the ball that eventually sealed the game. Two wickets each from Mitchell Johnson and Dhawal Kulkarni reduced Royals to their worst Powerplay score of all time: 29 for 4. Watson wasn’t one of those wickets, but he top-edged a Pragyan Ojha long hop before he could cause much damage.Royals were 58 for 5 in the 10th over when Watson fell but Brad Hodge, held back to No. 8, and Stuart Binny tried to put the chase on track, and even brought the equation down to 38 off three overs. However, Lasith Malinga bowled two of those overs and he went for five and eight in them.Royals could claim similar success with their bowling towards the end of the first innings, but the start wasn’t that good. Mumbai opened with the new pair of Tare and Glenn Maxwell, who weren’t pretty but were effective. After Maxwell for 23 off 17, Tare took over and went after all Royals bowlers without discrimination. However, he was only 24 off 15 when Dravid dropped a catch at short midwicket. He rubbed it in by pulling Binny over Dravid’s head next ball. When he finally fell, at 108 for 3 in the 13th over, Tare had set Mumbai up for possibly a score of 200. Some superb fielding and canny bowling from Royals, including Pollard’s run-out by Kevon Cooper and James Faulkner’s last two overs for just 11 runs, kept Mumbai down, but not for long.Having recovered from his poor game against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Johnson was creating breakthroughs at the top. In the first over, he might have got Dravid caught at the wicket without the edge, but it was a sharp bouncer nonetheless. Royals continued holding Watson back, and Mumbai kept running through the rest. When Watson finally arrived, Pollard started talking to him immediately. While Watson seemed furious, Pollard seemed to be laughing almost mockingly. Watson hadn’t even faced a ball. The umpires had to tell Pollard off, but he eventually had the final mock when Watson – under the pressure of falling wickets and rising asking rate – mis-hit Ojha to Pollard. After celebrating wildly, Pollard went to his boundary post and seemed to have another conversation with Watson, who sat in the dugout behind him.Eventually, Watson left the place in disgust, and finally Hodge got to bat when Royals lost another wicket. Royals needed 79 from 43 when he came in, but he and Binny brought the target down with sensible hitting. Hodge hit Ojha for four fours in the 16th over, which included a drop by Ambati Rayudu, but Malinga ensured Mumbai’s clean sheet at home.

Hopes sweeps away Western Australia

ScorecardQueensland swept to victory over Western Australia on the final day at the WACA ground to clinch a place in the Sheffield Shield final, where they have the chance to defend last year’s title.James Hopes, Ryan Harris and Nathan Hauritz were the chief wicket-takers for the Bulls as WA never threatened their fourth innings target of 273. Both sides needed an outright win to clamber across a tightly packed Shield table and reach the final, and it was the visitors who were rewarded for fighting hard and well after a poor start to the match.Still catching up from their first innings dismissal for 164, the Bulls began the day with a narrow lead and only four wickets in hand, but half centuries from Michael Neser and Ryan Harris stretched the advantage so effectively that Hopes was granted the luxury of declaring at lunch. The Warriors quickly slipped to 5 for 71 and this time there were to be no late order heroics from the hosts, who had pushed themselves into contention for a spot in the final with a trio of remarkable comeback wins in the three rounds prior to this one.

'I know where I stand' – Haddin

Daniel Brettig02-Feb-2012Brad Haddin, the Australia Test wicketkeeper, has said he knows exactly where he stands with the national selectors and is not feeling under undue pressure to perform when he leads the Prime Minister’s XI against the Sri Lankans in Canberra on Friday.Having retired from international Twenty20 matches, Haddin was available to play in the tour match at the ground where he began his senior cricket career. He had been stood down from the first three ODIs of the triangular series against Sri Lanka and India, and was initially keen to play for New South Wales during his time away from the national team, before being ordered to rest. However, he said he was “very comfortable” with where he stood.”I’m very comfortable where everything’s at, at the moment,” Haddin said in Canberra. “I know exactly where I stand and I know exactly what’s going on over the next couple of weeks. So from where I stand, it’s been a very exciting summer to win 4-0 against India. I think we showed as a team a lot of improvement in our game, and where we want to take the Australian cricket team, so I think it’s a very exciting time. I’m pretty relaxed with where my game’s at to be honest. This is not a do-or-die game [for me].”In commuting from Sydney to Canberra, Haddin missed the first Twenty20 match between Australia and India, in which his understudy Matthew Wade put his name squarely in front of the selectors for a longer-term role by cracking 72 and claiming the Man of the Match award. “By the sounds of it,” Haddin said, “it was a pretty impressive game from all the Australians. It was good to keep the momentum we gathered from the Test series [going] and for the guys to perform the way they did was an outstanding result.”On the topic of his resting, Haddin declined to comment on whether he had wanted to play for the NSW Blues, and said the matter of choosing when to give players a breather had to be taken on a case by case basis. “I think we need to work on that on an individual basis,” he said. “We have a lot of staff now that work through all those different processes and these decisions aren’t made lightly, there’s a whole lot of data that goes into these decisions.”Opposing Haddin’s XI will be A Sri Lankan side led by Mahela Jayawardene for the first time since he regained the captaincy. Weeks of upheaval in the nation’s cricket boardroom has seen a new coach, Graham Ford, also installed.”Within the space of one week a lot of things happened, so we have to try to settle things down,” Jayawardene said. “Yes, we have a new coach, I’ve come back [as captain], we’ve wanted to do a few things differently obviously, try to rebuild. We still have the senior guys behind us and some youngsters coming through to find the right combination in the future.”We’ve played some really good cricket in the last six months but we have not been able to string games together and win tournaments or series … we’ve lost 2-1, 3-2, 4-2, margins like that. We chased 300 twice in South Africa and that showed the character of the team, but we lost the series, so we just need to work hard at executing our plans more consistently.”The matter of player payments continues to fester, but Jayawardene refused to countenance it as an obstacle for the tourists over the next two months. “Not really, those are things we can’t control too much,” he said. “A new cricket board has been appointed a few weeks ago, so they’re trying to get everything sorted out. We’ll wait and see. We’ve waited for this long, we want to play cricket, that’s why we’re here right now, and it won’t affect us.”

Rodrigo Moledo recebe sondagem do futebol grego

Dilshan demands batting improvement

Sri Lanka’s captain Tillakaratne Dilshan has demanded more from his batsmen following their first-innings surrender for 174 in the second Test against Australia in Pallekele

Daniel Brettig in Pallekele08-Sep-2011Sri Lanka’s captain Tillakaratne Dilshan has demanded more from his batsmen following their first-innings surrender for 174 in the second Test against Australia in Pallekele. He threatened numerous changes to the team if performances did not improve.Dilshan was one of a series of batsmen dismissed cheaply as Sri Lanka lurched to 76 for 5 at lunch on the first day, a position from which they never recovered despite an excellent batting pitch. The start seemed to reflect the chaotic nature of the hosts’ lead-in to the Test, with Rangana Herath (finger) and Ajantha Mendis (back) ruled out on the morning of the match due to injuries.”Definitely there is something wrong in the batting,” Dilshan said. “We are talking, discussing, we are doing a lot of hard work in the training and we are discussing a lot of things, but now is the time to deliver.”We can’t say the wicket is bad. They’ve bowled really well but we’ve played the last series in England, where there was a better attack, and on a difficult wicket we batted really well. Now the players should put their hands up and deliver, they have to deliver, now is the time, we can’t wait anymore.”This is the third time we’ve got out cheaply [including 82 on the final day against England in Cardiff]. They bowled really well in the start but our batsmen didn’t bat well, that is why we got out. It is a good wicket, we are playing seven batsmen, we can’t expect 174 all out.”Several ideas have been tossed about in Sri Lanka’s dressing room, including the employment of the sports psychologist Rudi Webster at the conclusion of the series. Dilshan also said the older batsmen, including himself and Thilan Samaraweera, had to take more responsibility or risk being dropped. Their struggles contrasted with the success of Angelo Mathews, who followed a second-innings 95 in Galle with 58 here.”He’s batted really well in the No. 7 position,” Dilshan said. “We have problems with the middle order and the top order. We don’t want to change someone batting really well at No. 7, but we have to think about the second innings. Maybe change the batting line-up and send someone in top.”Dilshan described the changes to the side minutes before play as “unfortunate”. They necessitated the inclusion of the offspinner Suraj Randiv, who was going to be dropped, and the legspinner Seekkuge Prasanna, making his debut.Herath was struck on the finger during a fielding drill on the eve of the Test, while Mendis had a back problem that worsened in the lead-up to the game. “We thought he [Herath] would be okay but today he tried to grip the ball and he couldn’t, his finger was very sore,” Dilshan said. “Ajantha had a back injury in last one-dayer but he managed to play, but today morning he talked to the physio, he was worse than the last few weeks. I don’t want to take a chance and play him, so that is why we gave a youngster a chance. Unfortunately we had to make two changes in the morning.”

There will be a preliminary hearing in July in the Crown Prosecution Services’ case against the three Pakistan players banned for spot-fixing – Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Asif and Salman Butt, and player-agent Mazhar Majeed. During a hearing on May 20, which none of the four attended, the Southwark Crown Court in London decided the trial would be held from October 4. But the judge in the case, James Sanders, has ruled that all four will have to appear for a preliminary hearing in July in person or via video conferencing. The players and the agent are facing charges of conspiracy to cheat, and conspiracy to obtain and accept corrupt payments, following the Lord’s Test last August in which they allegedly conspired to bowl pre-determined no-balls. The four appeared at a hearing on March 17 – at the City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court, which set the date and jurisdiction for the May 20 hearing – and were granted unconditional bail at the time; Majeed, who is a citizen of the UK, was told to surrender his passport. The three players have already been found guilty of spot-fixing by the ICC. Butt was banned for 10 years, Asif for seven and Amir for five. They are now facing criminal charges under Britain’s Prevention of Corruption Act 1906, which has a penalty of up to seven years imprisonment for accepting corrupt payments. They also face charges of cheating under the Gambling Act 2005, which has a penalty of up to two years imprisonment. The foursome was charged after being questioned by Scotland Yard detectives over the alleged scandal in the Test at Lord’s last August, following accusations by the tabloid newspaper.
