Neil McGarrell, 41, has been named USA’s captain in a 15-man squad for the 2013 World Twenty20 Qualifier next month in the UAE. McGarrell, who played four Tests and 17 ODIs for West Indies between 1998 and 2001, made his debut for USA in 2012 against Canada, and takes over from Steve Massiah, who had been captain for seven years. Massiah was retained in the squad along with Orlando Baker, who captained USA to an 8-0 record in a stand-in capacity at the 2013 ICC Americas Division One Twenty20 tournament in March.Adam Sanford, 38, and Imran Awan are also making their way into the squad as fast bowlers. Sanford, who played 11 Tests for the West Indies from 2002 to 2004, played for USA in a series of trial matches against Bermuda this past weekend, and is set to make his official debut for USA in their opening match against Canada in Abu Dhabi on November 15. Awan, once considered one of the fastest bowlers in the Associate world, hasn’t played for USA since 2010 after struggling with his accuracy.USA’s lack of experienced pace bowlers was apparent earlier this year during the ICC World Cricket League Division Three competition, where they finished third. Timroy Allen has decided to return for USA after announcing his retirement following the end of WCL Division Three in May to focus on work and family commitments. That summer began with his axing outright from the Test side as part of a revamp of the red-ball side following a 4-1 tour of India, in which Bairstow earned his 100th cap in the fifth and final Test at Dharamshala.Since then, England have overlooked Bairstow when opportunities have arisen for a wicketkeeper-batter.While Jamie Smith started the 2024 Test season with the gloves, his absence from the New Zealand tour for the birth of his first child saw Essex’s Jordan Cox brought into the squad. When Cox broke his thumb ahead of the first Test, Durham’s Ollie Robinson was drafted in as a replacement, with Ollie Pope keeping for the series.Smith was also installed behind the stumps for the Champions Trophy, replacing Phil Salt across the limited-overs formats. Salt himself had taken on the role when former white-ball captain Jos Buttler opted to give up keeping.Bairstow’s situation is especially complicated because he remains on an ECB central contract, which is only set to expire this October. Jonny Bairstow has been handed his first Test call up after injury ruled Ravi Bopara out of the opening match against West Indies at Lord’s starting on Thursday. Bopara picked up a thigh injury during Essex’s Championship clash with Kent and has suffered another setback in trying to relaunch his Test career.Bairstow, who is a wicketkeeper-batsman but will not be required to have the gloves in the Test side, had gathered momentum in recent weeks after scoring two hundreds for Yorkshire this season and he struck a confident half-century for England Lions against the West Indians in Northampton. Over a 50-match first-class career he averages 46.37 with a highest score of 205.He has had a taste of international cricket with six ODIs and six Twenty20 internationals, playing a match-winning innings in each format when he hit an unbeaten 41 against India on his ODI debut and then struck 60 during the Twenty20 series against Pakistan in the UAE.Geoff Miller, the national selector, said: “Jonny Bairstow has put in a number of impressive performances both for England Lions and Yorkshire and has been working hard on the England Performance Programme over the last couple of years. He is an exciting young player who now has an opportunity to experience the Test environment.”Bopara will be left to rue the second untimely injury that has stalled his prospects of adding to 12 Test caps. He’s got to be fully fit to do himself justice and do a job for the side. On this occasion, this is not the case. Enquanto não define seu novo técnico, o Santos terá no banco de reservas a presença de Serginho Chulapa. Membro da comissão técnica fixa do Alvinegro, o auxiliar será o treinador interino nesta quarta-feira, em jogo contra o Flamengo, às 21h45, na Vila Belmiro. E tentará fazer valer seus números para começar bem a sequência de três jogos do Peixe em casa – além do Flamengo, América-MG, no domingo, e Cruzeiro, na quarta, pela Copa do Brasil, serão os próximos adversários.

Em resultados divididos em seis anos diferentes, Chulapa tem 70 jogos como comandante do Santos – a maioria deles como interino – e 33 vitórias, 20 empates e apenas 17 derrotas. Se em 1994 era, de fato, o técnico do clube, em 2001, 2005, 2007, 2009 e 2015 foi usado como interino.

Chulapa, desde que retornou ao clube, passou a ser usado como “bombeiro”, acionado em momentos específicos para dar soluções rápidas, enquanto a solução definitiva não chega. Na carreira, porém, o treinador vitorioso como santista, coleciona polêmicas.

Em 1994, Chulapa era auxiliar de Pepe, demitido após campanha ruim. O hoje interino assumiu a função de maneira definitiva e fazia bom trabalho. Em novembro daquele ano, porém, acabou demitido do cargo após agredir um repórter que o ironizou após a derrota para o Corinthians, no Pacaembu.

Em 2001, primeira vez a voltar a ser treinador do Peixe, assumiu como interino após a demissão de Geninho, para ficar até o fim do Campeonato Brasileiro daquele ano. A última vez que atuou como interino do Santos foi em junho de 2015, quando venceu Tite na Vila Belmiro, em partida diante do Corinthians.

Sequência dará o tom do futuro
A sequência que o Santos inicia nesta quarta-feira é crucial para seu futuro na temporada. Os dois primeiros jogos serão importantes para afastar o time da parte de baixo da tabela do Campeonato Brasileiro – atualmente é o 15º colocado. Depois, contra o Cruzeiro, a partida é válida pelas oitavas de final da Copa do Brasil. Sair na frente no jogo de ida pode fazer toda a diferença na busca pela classificação.

No cenário ideal projetado pela diretoria, Chulapa será o treinador do Peixe apenas neste primeiro confronto, já que a ideia é oficializar o novo técnico a tempo do jogo contra o América-MG, marcado para domingo, às 19h. Assim, o novo comandante teria menos de uma semana para pensar a equipe para o jogo contra a Raposa.

Neste momento, Zé Ricardo é o mais cotado. Jair Ventura foi demitido do cargo na última segunda-feira, com um retrospecto de 39 jogos, 14 vitórias, 10 empates e 15 derrotas, pouco mais de 40% de aproveitamento.
