Lights go out on Somerset's hopes

Halfway through the second innings there was a power surge through SE11. It took the floodlights out for 20 minutes and knocked out Somerset too. Pursuing a revised 275 in 38.2 overs to be sure of going through, their spark faded.Somerset’s equation was dictated by events at Trent Bridge, where victory for Nottinghamshire would require Somerset to overhaul Durham’s net run-rate. The initial task to do so was 285 in 42.1 overs but the loss of four overs for a floodlight failure stiffened the requirement and on resumption they lost their way to lose a third straight game after qualification looked comfortably within reach. It appeared Somerset’s man-made power surge was leading them through. Marcus Trescothick’s renaissance in the County Championship has not extended to the one-day arena this season. His form slipped to such an extent that he was dropped from the T20 side. He chose an opportune moment to regain his touch and bludgeoned 80 from only 54 balls – just his second limited-overs half-century this season. He began with an edged cut over the slips before carving a more deliberate stroke wide of third man for another boundary. The first of his four sixes was a slap over Tim Linley’s head into the pavilion in the ninth over.Nineteen came from the next. He reached outside off stump to heave George Edwards for six over extra cover, took more runs to cow corner and through the off side yet again, before sending a length ball into the seats over deep midwicket. The innings looked to have set his side up for a dashing chase to pip Durham into fourth place in Group B but a jolt of electricity after 24.1 overs had an undesired effect. On resumption, 129 were needed in 14.1 to be sure of going through but as Nottinghamshire suffered a Powerplay disaster, suddenly any victory would send Somerset through. The tenth wicket did their best to at least win the game with a stand of 34 but Nottinghamshire’s eventual victory rendered the effort worthless. And a superb run-out by Aneesh Kapil saw Surrey win by seven runs anyway.Somerset struggled to regain momentum after Zafar Ansari won two lbws against Trescothick and Johann Myburgh in consecutive overs. The lights went on and off. Alex Barrow then swung wildly at Robin Peterson and was stumped. Lewis Gregory became the fifth lbw on the card. James Hildreth kept Somerset in the game with a half-century but when he slapped Ansari to extra-cover, Somerset were slipping out.Surrey could sit back and giggle at the events having not won a single match in the competition – in stark contrast to their T20 form. Jason Roy led their charge to NatWest Blast Finals Day but failed here, following a morning of much media attention. He struck the first ball of the match for four but, to the 11th, was pinned in the creased by Gregory and lbw for 10.Instead, Kapil took his chance to prove why Surrey have offered him a contract until the end of 2015. Released by Worcestershire at the end of last season, Kapil’s capable all-round ability has been recognised at The Oval and here he made a 52-ball fifty in just his sixth game for Surrey.Rory Burns made his way to a steady 40 in 48 balls before falling to a leading edge trying to work Jack Leach to leg – part of a tidy 2 for 55 for the slow left-armer. Gary Wilson was the fourth player to pass forty without making his tally innings-defining. He was smartly run out by Craig Overton from deep square leg.

BCB to investigate alleged altercation between Shakib, spectator

The BCB will investigate an alleged altercation between Shakib Al Hasan and a spectator during the first ODI against India in Mirpur. Acting CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury has said that the board will hear all sides of the story before taking any decision.”We have heard of an incident which we will look into after the series,” Nizamuddin said. “Like you, we have heard of what happened but we haven’t seen. So we have to look at all sides before we can tell you anything more.”Later during the press conference, Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim said the team would have to bear the brunt of the situation, irrespective of whether a player was allegedly at fault.”It was not in my control, and I hadn’t heard it when the incident happened,” Mushfiqur said. “I was busy calculating what would have happened in case of a match taking place. It would be better to talk to the management. If I had known, I could have told you.”I didn’t see what happened. A lot can be said. Whatever the public says, we have to bow our heads to them. So I would say it is not just his fault, but the whole team’s fault. It can be anyone, so the team has to be the sufferer.”Earlier in the year, the BCB banned Shakib for three ODIs and fined him $3800 for making inappropriate gestures on a live television broadcast during an ODI against Sri Lanka.

Thomas, Walton tons thump Guyana

A round-up of the Regional four-day matches that ended on March 24, 2014

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Mar-2014Combined Campuses and Colleges rode on centuries from Shacaya Thomas and Chadwick Walton to roll Guyana over by seven wickets and record their first win of the season. Their efforts were crucial to securing a first-innings lead before spinners Ryan Austin and Akeem Dewar reinforced CCC’s dominance.Guyana’s batting this season has featured a father-son duo in Shivnarine and Tagenarine Chanderpaul but the sheen of the event was taken off slightly when both of them fell for single-figures. Opener Assad Fudadin (71) gave structure to the innings with a composed half-century. But he was left lacking for support, until No.8 Anthony Bramble hastened to a 68-ball 64. He spearheaded a ninth-wicket stand of 40 at better than run-a-ball to hike the total to 263. Austin was the best bowler with 5 for 71.Guyana would have counted on the momentum of that late surge to muzzle their opposition but Thomas plundered 176, with 14 fours and 4 sixes while Walton struck 107 off 193 balls to usher CCC to 391 before they declared. Spin held sway again with Veerasammy Permaul and Devendra Bishoo taking six of the nine wickets to fall. The most drastic impact of the slow bowlers was reserved for the third innings when Austin (4-22 in 26.5 overs) and Dewar (4-61) ran through Guyana. Tagenarine top-scored with 43, but his efforts were only good enough to post a highly gettable target of 46, albeit CCC lost three wickets in overhauling it.Four-wicket hauls by Sulieman Benn and Ashley Nurse helped Barbados to an innings win over Trinidad and Tobago at Kensington Oval with a day to spare. Nurse followed up his first-innings century with six wickets in the match, while Benn finished with a match haul of eight.Barbados opted to bat first and got off to a bad start, losing their captain Kraigg Brathwaite for a duck. Steady contributions by the middle order helped Barbados take control, thanks to Omar Phillips’ fifty and forties by Kirk Edwards and Jonathan Carter. The wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich and Carlos Brathwaite added a quick 82 for the sixth wicket before Dowrich fell for 53. Brathwaite and Nurse then added an unbeaten 190 for the eighth wicket, with Brathwaite scoring 109. Nurse blazed an unbeaten 130 off just 111 balls before the declaration at 479 for 8.Carlos Brathwaite struck early with his seamers and it paved the way for Benn to strike with his left-arm spin. Only Jason Mohammed resisted with 43 as the T&T collapsed to 120 in 37 overs. Benn was brought on to bowl immediately after T&T were asked to follow on. The openers Adrian Barath and Evin Lewis added 68 before Benn struck, removing Lewis for 61. Darren Bravo then cut Jason Holder to backward point before Barath was caught behind off Benn. When Mohammed was caught at leg slip off Nurse, T&T had lost three wickets for just ten runs.T&T went into lunch at 138 for 4, but lost wickets in a hurry and were bowled out for 199.

Amir could be allowed PCB training facilities

A five-member ICC sub-committee will look into relaxing certain conditions of the five-year ban imposed on Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir after the spot-fixing scandal of 2010

Umar Farooq01-Jul-2013A five-member ICC sub-committee, which was set up after the 2013 annual conference to review the anti-corruption code, will also look into relaxing certain conditions of the five-year ban imposed on Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir after the spot-fixing scandal of 2010. While the most stringent stipulations of the ban will still remain, the PCB has requested the ICC to consider a few concessions, especially with regard to Amir using the board’s facilities for training.A PCB spokesman told ESPNcricinfo: “The ICC, during the annual conference week, constituted a five-member committee that will review and recommend amendments to the ICC Anti-Corruption Code, and on recommendation from the PCB, will also provide its suggestions to the ICC board on the ban related to Mohammad Amir.” The ICC was unwilling to the reveal who would comprise the sub-committee.Regardless of the recommendation from the committee, Amir will not be able to play any kind of club, domestic, or international cricket and will not train with the national team. The only significant allowance that could be made is that he regain access to the training facilities offered by the PCB.ESPNcricinfo understands that the PCB made the request to the ICC only because Amir had complied with conditions of the ban: not committing any further breach of the anti-corruption code and undergoing the ICC’s educational and rehabilitation programme. Amir will be available for national selection from September 3, 2015, and the PCB sought the relaxation of some terms so that he could be ready to play as soon as his ban ends, rather than spend more months in training.Amir had not been aware of the PCB’s request but seemed content with anything that would help him return to cricket. He hasn’t been doing full-fledged training but has kept himself in good shape. By the time he completes his ban he will be 23. “I will come hard despite the five-year in-activeness,” Amir had told ESPNcricinfo last year. “I want to come back with my head held high, with a new spirit and as a role model.”Salman Butt, the Pakistan captain who was banned for ten years by the ICC on charges of spot-fixing during the Lord’s Test in 2010, had made a similar request in a personal capacity two days before the ICC’s annual conference. His case, however, was not accepted as it was believed that Butt had not fully complied with the ICC’s conditions.Butt had recently taken the first step in his rehabilitation by publicly admitting to and apologising for his part in the spot-fixing scandal. He also indicated his willingness to participate in the PCB and ICC’s rehabilitation programmes. Five out of Butt’s ten-year ban from any cricketing activities were to be a suspended sentence on condition that he would commit no further breach of the anti-corruption code and participate in a PCB-controlled anti-corruption education programme.Of the three players banned by the ICC before the criminal trial began in London – fast bowler Mohammad Asif being the third – only Amir had pleaded guilty to the charges at the Southwark Crown Court. Both Butt and Asif had pleaded not guilty and appealed their bans at the Court of Arbitration in Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Star-studded teams step into fray

Preview of the second game of IPL 2013, between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians

The Preview by Siddhartha Talya03-Apr-2013Match factsThursday, April 4, 2013
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)Lasith Malinga will miss the opening game for Mumbai Indians•AFP

Big PictureHow loyalties and allegiances change in the IPL. Anil Kumble’s association with Royal Challengers Bangalore was long and high-profile, as a player, captain, and mentor. He is known to have played a critical role in team strategy, selections, auction picks, all for a team representing his hometown. He is in the opposing camp now, hired by Mumbai Indians as their team mentor, and will have to plot against a side he helped strengthen over five seasons on his home ground. An immediate problem to address for Kumble’s team is the absence of Lasith Malinga from the opening game due to injury. A prized asset of the Mumbai side, Malinga is still recovering from a sore back he suffered during the home series against Bangladesh. His replacement apart, Mumbai can compensate for that loss with runs from a power-packed batting line-up, though it’ll be interesting to see if Sachin Tendulkar and his opening partner [there were as many as eight last season] are able to retain their combination for a good part of the season. The Royal Challengers are among the most passionately followed teams in the IPL and, for a tournament centred on the concept of city loyalties, Bangalore has lapped up its team like no other. But the title has proved elusive, despite twice having made the final. Led by Virat Kohli this season, Royal Challengers have as many as 15 seamers in their squad – though one of them, Zaheer Khan, is ruled out of the opening match with a side strain. It could be said that Kumble’s inputs may have made their job easier had he not switched over, but how they manage their personnel is one of several potential challenges this season could throw up.Players to watchIs Glenn Maxwell worth a million dollars? He was the only million-dollar buy at the 2013 auction, then had a lacklustre Test series in India, and didn’t have a great World Twenty20 before he was bought. His purchase is a gamble, and it remains to be seen to what extent his all-round skills are able to justify, or undermine, the team’s decision. From doing the moonwalk to gangnam style, classy celebrations to banter with opposition players, Chris Gayle has loosened up significantly since we first saw him in 1999 when he took on India in Toronto. His demeanour on the field aside, he has been a pivotal player for Royal Challengers with his explosive batting at the top, and has endeared himself to his fans, not just by treating them to airshows at the Chinnaswamy Stadium but winning their admiration despite giving them a bloody nose, literally, and landing them in hospital.2012 head-to-headGayle was the architect of a big win over Mumbai last season at the Wankhede Stadium, as Royal Challengers eased home by nine wickets. Mumbai then won a close game at the Chinnaswamy Stadium less than a week later, with Ambati Rayudu and Kieron Pollard guiding them to victory in a tight chase.Stats and trivia Malinga is among the few bowlers to have kept Gayle quiet in the IPL. R Ashwin is another. Malinga has bowled 39 balls to Gayle in the IPL, conceding 36 runs that included five fours. Against Ashwin, Gayle has scored at a run a ball in the IPL – 33 off 33. At the very least, Gayle could become the second-highest run-getter in all T20 cricket. He is currently on 4804 runs, just 17 behind David Hussey. Brad Hodge leads the list with 5274. Quotes”We do have a lot of options to pick from, with as many as 11 specialist pacers and four seaming all-rounders. Of course there are a few players who are coming off injuries, like Daniel Vettori (ankle injury).”

“We are all friends for the next few months. That’s one thing I have made very clear to the guys already. We are one. The Mumbai Indians are one.”

Thirimanne shows the future is not bleak

Not many of the 26,000 at the SCG knew Lahiru Thirimanne upon his arrival at the crease, yet they rose to give him a warm ovation when he departed short of the three-figure score

Andrew Fernando at the SCG03-Jan-2013From all the innings, shots, wickets and catches Mahela Jayawardene oversawas captain of Sri Lanka in 2012, his favourite moment was an instance ofexceptional gall from Lahiru Thirimanne. Sri Lanka were five runs short of victory in Pallekele in their first Super Eights match of the World Twenty20, but they only had two balls remaining, with Tim Southee at thebowling crease, delivering one of the spells of the tournament. Thirimanne, fresh from the dugout, had not managed a convincing stroke from either ofthe balls he had faced, yet on the penultimate delivery of Sri Lanka’sinnings, he knelt and played a scoop he had never tried before ininternational cricket, sending Southee’s yorker over short fine leg forfour, and the stadium into raptures.”For Lahiru to have the courage to do that and back himself was fantastic,”Jayawardene said months later, while reflecting on the year’s events. “Ithink among the young group, he has that mindset to handle those reallytough situations.” Courage, self-belief, fortitude. They are the samevirtues that fashioned Thirimanne’s 91 in Sydney, and provided the backboneof Sri Lanka’s first innings after the team had shown little of the abovewith the bat in their last Test. Not many of the 26,000 at the SCG knew Thirimanne upon his arrival at thecrease, and until five days before the match, he had no idea he would beplaying a New Year Test either. Yet, when he departed short of thethree-figure score he deserved, the stadium rose to give him a warmovation. They only need to think back to last year’s Test to recall knocksthat dwarf Thirimanne’s 91 in heft, skill and allure, but there was much toenjoy about the steel in his defense and the defiance in his strokes, andthey did not withhold their appreciation. Perhaps the crowd had also heardon their earpiece radios by then, that Thirimanne had stepped off a planeonly 36 hours before his innings began. If Thirimanne was not nervous when he arrived at the crease, the lbw shoutand referral off his first ball certainly would have put him on edge. “Ithought that was out,” he said at the end of the day, but he did not allowthat rattling introduction detract from focus or technique. He leftpositively and even early in his innings, his scoring strokes were assured. As he grew more accustomed to the pace of the pitch, he drove the quicks onthe front foot with the same comfort with which he dispatched Nathan Lyonthrough the offside, leaning back. Australia cannot have had long toanalyse footage of Thirimanne to deduct a plan of attack, but if there areglaring vulnerabilities in his game, he did well to hide them. Few SriLankan batsmen graduate from the domestic system without a major weaknessthat must be ironed out at the top level.Thirimanne had replaced Kumar Sangakkara, and the bent-knee cover drive he wielded with increasing command throughout the day bore strong parallels to Sangakkara’s signature stroke, only it was less clean. Like Thirimanne, Sangakkara had a limited range of strokes once, but a strong mind andtireless work ethic transformed him into one of the greats of the moderngame. It is encouraging that Thirimanne already seems to possess an irontemperament, but he would do well to emulate the hunger and commitmentSangakkara has ridden to acclaim, if he is to make good on the potentialhis innings made plain. Before receiving the call from Sri Lanka’s selectors, Thirimanne’s lastmatch was at the Nondescripts Cricket Club in Colombo, where even the likesof Mitchell Johnson might find getting the ball above chest height afruitless pursuit. The SCG may be the least daunting Australian venue forSri Lanka, but the bounce and carry in the pitch on day one is a worldremoved from the featherbed on which he scratched out a limited overshalf-century a week ago, and he has had just one training session toadjust to batting in conditions that have not flattered his teammates inthe first two Tests. Uncluttered by the baggage of the Melbourne massacreperhaps, Thirimanne relied on resilience to compensate for unfamiliarity.”It was a bit difficult to adjust, but it’s all about mindset,” he said.”You have to adapt to any conditions quickly if you want to playinternational cricket. Whether we are playing ODIs or Test we have to getour mindset right. I adapted really well today. I am disappointed to havemissed a hundred, but I’m happy with my performance.”Just as Rangana Herath has shown Sri Lanka there is life after MuttiahMuralitharan, there are signs from the likes of Thirimanne and DineshChandimal that Sri Lanka can be hopeful about their batting beyond thecareers of the four ageing men who have begun winding down their careers. On day one in Sydney, a 23-year-old propelled Sri Lanka towardsrespectability with spunk and composure. The visitors may still be placedpoorly in the match, with a second-string pace attack now tasked withreining Australia in, but fans at home will take even more pleasure inThirimanne’s innings than the SCG crowd that witnessed it, becausesuddenly, the future does not look so bleak.
