Toby Alderweireld leaving could solve Spurs’ biggest problem

[ad_pod ]

Toby Alderweireld’s departure from Tottenham Hotspur may well fix one of Mauricio Pochettino’s biggest problems at a stroke.

The Belgium international has a £25million release clause in his contract and doubts persist over  whether the defender will remain north London beyond the summer.

Indeed, Alderweireld has spent a total of four years in the capital and has emerged as a genuinely world-class centre-back.

But this season he has been at the centre of one of Pochettino’s biggest problems.

The Argentine has continually rotated between a back three and a back four throughout the campaign.

When playing the former, he has partnered Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez with Alderweireld. When using the latter, he has cycled through the three and has occasionally used Juan Foyth too.

It should be no surprise, then, that the uncertainty surrounding the defence has adversely affected the club.

This season, Spurs have conceded 34 goals in the Premier League in 31 games. In 2017-18, Spurs conceded 36 in 38 games. Indeed, they have not kept a clean sheet domestically since February in a 1-0 win over Newcastle.

Since then, Spurs have let in one against Leicester City and Arsenal, as well as two versus Burnley, Chelsea, Southampton and Liverpool.

Across the club’s last five games, they have played a back three, three times – in the 2-1 losses to Liverpool and Burnley and the 1-1 draw with Arsenal. In those games, Alderweireld, Vertonghen and Sanchez played together twice, but Alderweireld was not involved versus Burnley.

In the two games in which they used a back four, Alderweireld and Sanchez played together against Chelsea but the Belgian was replaced by Vertonghen against Southampton. Alderweireld was not even in the squad that day.

Last season, Spurs utilised a centre-back pairing of Sanchez and Vertonghen because of Alderweireld’s injury-riddled campaign.

The defender missed 23 Premier League games in a row through injury. In that time, Spurs lost just four times.

They beat the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea in that time period, and also recorded Champions League wins over Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund without Alderweireld on the pitch. Indeed, he sustained his injury against the Spanish giants and lasted a mere 24 minutes. When he was substituted, the two sides were level at 0-0. Spurs won 3-1.

Football FanCast quizzed Football.London’s Tottenham correspondent, Alasdair Gold, on this very issue.

He said: “Last year, Pochettino may have been weirdly helped, if that’s such a way of describing Toby Alderweireld’s injury, but Alderweireld’s injury meant he had to play Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez. They formed a very solid partnership and they knew what each other were doing and when it went to a back three, it was purely Eric Dier coming back into that back three. It was very settled.

“This year, he looks like a man who is thinking ‘I have to play Alderweireld, because he’s class’ but it’s now giving him an issue with Sanchez, who Pochettino absolutely adores, so he’s now got a thing of ‘I really want to play a back three but I can’t do it every match’ and it’s messy. You can see it in the goals conceded tally.”

Of course, much of the furore surrounding his future revolves around the asking price. Alderweireld is not a £25m defender; he is worth at least double that in the current transfer market.

And many believe that whichever club triggers the clause and acquires his signature will receive a genuine bargain. That may be true.

But, by the same token, Alderweireld departing will allow Pochettino to properly bed in a central defensive partnership that has already proved its worth in north London.

It is that rarest of things: A win-win situation.

Former hero: Liverpool fans reveal their respect for John Toshack

[ad_pod ]

John Toshack turned out for Liverpool between 1970 and 1978, finding the back of the net on 96 occasions in 247 appearances for the Reds in all competitions.

The former striker actually started his professional career with Cardiff City, turning out for the Welsh side for five years before the move to Liverpool.

Toshack’s playing career then finished at Swansea City, who he represented between 1978 and 1984.

The Welshman has since gone on to coach a number of sides at club and indeed international level, including Real Madrid and Wales.

Toshack last managed Iranian club Tractor Sazi in 2018, but is currently without a job.

Pl>ymaker FC’s Matchday with Max caught up with Jamaica’s women’s team. See what happened when he met the history makers in the video below…

It was actually the former forward’s birthday on Friday, and Liverpool’s official Twitter account was on hand with a special message for the now 70-year-old.

A expected, that led to a number of Liverpool fans revealing their respect for the Welshman, who had an excellent scoring record at all three of his professional clubs.

Crystal Palace fans crucify van Aanholt showing vs Brighton

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Crystal Palace fans have been running the rule over their defeat against Brighton, and they are not at all happy with former fan favourite Patrick van Aanholt.

As has so often been the case at Selhurst Park this season, Palace dominated Saturday’s match against the Seagulls but barely mustered a single clear-cut chance.

Roy Hodgson’s decision to start three workhorses in midfield backfired again, as superb goals from Glenn Murray and Anthony Knockaert gave the visitors all three points.

The gaffer is taking plenty of stick for his team selections at the moment, but one of the biggest problems has come in an area where he doesn’t really have other options to choose from – left-back.

Van Aanholt is a very popular figure in south London thanks to his passion for the club, ability to add goals and assists from defence, blistering speed and of course his entertaining social media presence.

However, the 28 year-old is enduring a horrific run of form, and scored just a 6.32 on Whoscored’s player rating system on Saturday.

He was way too relaxed in allowing Knockaert to cut inside onto his stronger foot and score the winner, and the Twitter reactions down below are well and truly fed up with the Dutchman…

Liverpool fans want to sign De Bruyne after Belgian’s comments

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans are calling for what would be the most audacious transfer move in recent history, after Kevin De Bruyne spoke highly of the Reds’ title charge.

Liverpool and Manchester City have formed a new rivalry over the last year or so, thanks partly to the their intense Champions League clash last campaign and of course even more so due to this year’s title race.

The two are locked in an epic battle that looks certain to go right to the end, and De Bruyne has now had his say on the showdown between the two clubs.

Roberto Firmino has thrown a party themed around the colour of his teeth! Watch the video below to find out what we’re talking about…

“Last year we were 12 points ahead, and now we are one behind,” De Bruyne said. “That shows Liverpool are doing well.

“If we keep winning and they keep winning it goes to the wire, but if we win every game until the end of the season and it’s not enough you just have to congratulate Liverpool, as they will win with 99 points.

“There are still 10 games in the Premier League – a long way to go – and Liverpool are still there, so we try to win game by game.”

De Bruyne has always been a classy contender, but Liverpool fans are reading more into the comments due to past admissions that the Belgian international grew up as a Liverpool fan.

The 27 year-old has quite literally said the words “I want to play for Liverpool” before, and even though Transfermarkt values him at a whopping £135m, fans are calling for a jaw-dropping summer move.

Higginbotham says Villa can thrive even if Birmingham target Grealish

[ad_pod ]

Speaking to Sky Sports’ Match Centre (11:25am on March 7 as per HITC), Danny Higginbotham expects Birmingham City to target Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish in the second city derby at St Andrew’s on Sunday, but believes they can benefit.

What’s the word, then?

The 23-year-old returned to action in the 4-0 win against Derby County last weekend following a three-month injury lay-off, and he made an instant impact with a dynamic display – as captain – that culminated in a stunning volley.

According to WhoScored, the Villa talisman is the most fouled player in the division averaging 4.8 every appearance, and it would be no surprise if the hosts look to take him out of the game at the weekend.

Well, speaking on Sky Sports’ Match Centre, per HITC, ahead of the huge clash between the Championship play-off hopefuls, the 40-year-old pundit said: “There will be no doubt about that [Birmingham targeting Grealish].

“The beauty of it is when you go to try and stop a player like that because there are three players around him. He has got the two central midfielders and the centre back comes out, so all of a sudden he creates space in behind him because you are fearful of a player like Grealish.”

What will happen?

The 23-year-old has got so used to being fouled by opposition players that he now knows how to get up, get on with it and still make a difference.

The great thing for Dean Smith is that if Higginbotham is correct with his predictions, it could give players like John McGinn and Conor Hourihane more space to make a difference in the final third at St Andrew’s.

The latter showed with a brace in the success against the Rams last time out that he has plenty of quality, and he could be given the opportunity to take advantage to ensure Villa take a crucial three points in their play-off bid.

Man Utd's great decline: A timeline of the Glazer family's disastrous Old Trafford tenure

GOAL charts the Americans' much-maligned ownership of the Red Devils, which has led to waves of fans protests over the years

When Avram and Joel Glazer announced in November 2022 that Manchester United were exploring "strategic alternatives" and were to begin a process to sell the club, fans were thrilled at the prospect that the family that has presided over a steady decline would soon be gone.

However, almost 10 months on, and the much-maligned American family remain at the helm of England's biggest and most successful club, barely seen or heard from. Protests are held at every United match but the family remain unmoved and unbothered by the dissent they are subjected to on a regular basis.

After months of speculation and reports about the intentions of INEOS and Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim to buy the club, there is now serious doubt over whether the Glazers are still interested in selling United. Meanwhile, the team have made a worrying start to the new season and the club is lurching from one off-field crisis to another, beset by a lack of leadership from their absentee owners.

GOAL charts the Glazer family's 18 years in control of United, which has witnessed mass protests, institutional crises, the doomed launch of the European Super League (ESL) and the biggest drop in the club's share price in more than a decade…

March 2003 – Glazer buys his first stake

On the same day that United are beaten 2-0 by Liverpool in the League Cup final in Cardiff, Malcolm Glazer, a Florida-based businessman who is also the owner of the recently crowned Super Bowl champions the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, spends £9m ($11m) to buy a 2.9 per cent stake in Manchester United. Glazer makes the purchase through a holding company called Red Football. By late November, he and his family has a 15% stake in the club.

May 2005 – Glazer closes in on ownership

On May 12, Glazer takes his stake in the club to almost 57% of total shares after buying out major shareholders J. P McManus and John Magnier. The Irish businessmen, major players in horse racing, were acquaintances of Sir Alex Ferguson but fell out with the Scot over a disagreement over studding rights of Rock of Gibraltar, a horse the United manager co-owned with Magnier's wife.

Four days later, Red Football increases its stake in United to 75%, allowing the Glazer family to end the club's status as a PLC and delist it from the London Stock Exchange. A number of United fans, who have been opposed to the takeover since February, wear black to the FA Cup final against Arsenal. United lose on penalties.

June 2005 – Takeover complete, fans intimidate new owners

The sale process is complete on June 29 after Red Football's shareholding reaches 98%, meaning it is allowed to squeeze out the remaining shareholders. The club is plunged into debt for the first time in over 70 years, taking on debt of £660m (£824m), incurring interest payments of £62m (£77m) per year.

The day after the sale is completed around 300 fans protest against the new owners outside Old Trafford and are pushed back by 100 police, leading to two arrests. United great Sir Bobby Charlton apologises to the new owners for the hostile reception they receive.

Malcolm Glazer's sons Avram, Joel and Bryan are appointed as non-executive directors. His other sons Kevin and Edward and daughter Darcie are appointed to the club's board in 2006.

Also in June, supporters distraught by the takeover launch a new club called FC United of Manchester, who are accepted into the non-league North West Counties Division Two.

January 2010 – Debt increases, unleashing more protests

United are in rude health on the pitch, having won three consecutive Premier League titles, the 2008 Champions League and reaching the 2009 Champions League final. Despite all the success and relatively frugal spending in the transfer market after selling Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid for a world-record £80m ($100m) fee, the club's debt increases from £660m (£824m) to £716m ($894m).

The announcement that United intend to refinance the debt unleashes a new wave of protests at matches. For the first time, fans start wearing green and gold, the colours of Newton Heath, instead of red to show their opposition to the owners.

Mass protests take place before United's final game of the 2009-10 season against Stoke, when there is still a chance they can win the title. They eventually surrender their crown to Chelsea.

Arsenal's transfer window: Mudryk, Felix and the players Arteta needs to sign in January

Arsenal may be top of the Premier League but it's clear that they will need reinforcements if they are to sustain their title challenge.

Arsenal’s strength in depth has been the topic of much discussion since Tuesday's 0-0 draw with Newcastle.

Mikel Arteta looked to try change the game as it wore on but his options were very limited, so much so that his only substitution saw him bring on Takehiro Tomiyasu for Ben White at right-back.

The Arsenal manager has stated that the club is active in the transfer market and their attempts to bring in winger Mykhailo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk are now common knowledge.

But just how shallow is Arsenal’s pool of players and where are reinforcements most required?

GOAL takes a look below and ranks each area in terms of importance…

  • Getty Images

    Full-back

This is an area where Arsenal are very well stocked. Indeed, that there is a chance that they could even let one full-back leave.

Cedric Soares is wanted by several clubs, including Fulham, and has made just two substitute appearances in the league this season due to the number of options Arteta has available to him.

White has made the right-back spot his own since the start of the campaign, while Takehiro Tomiyasu represents an excellent alternative.

Arsenal then have Oleksandr Zinchenko and Kieran Tierney competing for the left-back spot, with Tomiyasu also more than capable of filling in there as well if needed – as he has already demonstrated this season.

So, full-back is not a position that needs to be prioritised right now, even if Cedric is allowed to move on.

    Goalkeeper

Arsenal also have plenty of depth here, so there is no need for the club to go looking for a goalkeeper this month.

Aaron Ramsdale is the undoubted No.1 and is enjoying a fine season, while summer signing Matt Turney has proven himself to be a more than adequate understudy, both in terms of his performances in the Europa League and during the World Cup with the United States.

Third-choice Karl Hein is an impressive young shot-stopper, while talented 21-year-old Arthur Okonkwo is out on loan at Crewe Alexandra.

  • Getty

    Attacking midfield

Arsenal spent £34 million ($41m) on Fabio Vieira last summer, so they will not be investing in another attacking midfielder in January.

Vieira is still adapting to a new club and country, but has shown in flashes why Arsenal invested so heavily in the former Porto ace.

Captain Martin Odegaard, meanwhile, is having a superb campaign, while Granit Xhaka continues to write his own redemption story having been asked to play in a more advanced role by Mikel Arteta.

And with Emile Smith Rowe about to finally return after his long-term injury, there is no pressing need for Arsenal to bring in another attacking midfielder.

    Centre-back

Arsenal have an exceptional centre-back pairing in Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba.

Mikel Arteta also has Rob Holding to call upon if needed, with the former Bolton man still an integral part of the Spaniard’s squad.

And there is, of course, White, who it’s easy to forget is actually a centre-back by trade – despite his superb performances on the right side of the back four this season.

Looking to the long-term, Arteta will be hoping to add another left-sided centre-back option to his squad to provide natural cover for Gabriel, but it’s unlikely that Arsenal will try to do anything in that position before the close of the winter window.

Indeed, with those four strong centre-back options already at the club, and Tomiyasu capable of providing further cover if required, Edu will be prioritising other positions.

Shahadat Hossain's suspension from domestic cricket lifted

The BCB has lifted the temporary suspension of fast bowler Shahadat Hossain, imposed last year, on humanitarian grounds

ESPNcricinfo staff10-May-2016The BCB has lifted the temporary suspension on fast bowler Shahadat Hossain on “humanitarian grounds”. Shahadat will be eligible to play domestic cricket but not international cricket until his legal problems are resolved; he is likely to play in the ongoing Dhaka Premier League.”The BCB’s disciplinary committee has taken the decision to withdraw the playing ban on Shahadat from humanitarian considerations following an appeal by the player,” BCB chief executive Nizam Uddin Chowdhury said. “The ruling, effective from today, is applicable for participation in domestic cricket only. He will not be considered for national team selection until his legal issues are settled.”Shahadat expressed his gratitude to the board and said that he was “fully fit”, although he hasn’t played competitive cricket for over a year.”I felt really bad missing out on so much cricket, but I am thankful to the BCB for letting me play, and always helping me in my bad times,” Shahadat said. “I tried to work on my fitness even when I was in jail. Now I am fully fit and I can bowl at my full strength. It is still not confirmed for which club I will play. I have been training for a long time with Mohammedan Sporting Club, so I could play for them. Or it could be any other club too.”Shahadat had been suspended in September 2015 after a case was registered against him and his wife under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act on charges of assaulting their housemaid. They were arrested on October 5 and were granted bail in December.Shahadat had appealed to the BCB in April this year for permission to play in the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League, but the board’s disciplinary committee turned him down. AJM Nasir Uddin, the disciplinary committee chairman, had also said Shahadat would remain suspended unless the court dismissed the case. His name had been listed in the B+ category of the tournament roster subject to withdrawal of the suspension.Shahadat’s last appearance for Bangladesh was in May 2015, in the second Test against Pakistan in Mirpur. He bowled only two balls in the first innings before suffering a knee injury that ruled him out for six months, during which time he was charged for assault and suspended.
