Warne's assault blows apart the record book

Lynn McConnell22-Oct-2002Australia’s leg-spinning maestro Shane Warne has sent out a huge warning to England as they prepare for the Ashes series, smashing more Test records in what has become a rejuvenation of his career against Pakistan.Pakistan were 47 runs behind Australia’s first-innings score of 444 with only two of their second innings wickets remaining in the third Test. Warne has three for 56 in the innings and Glenn McGrath three for 18.Playing in Sharjah, where the black gold of oil has created great wealth, Warne has bowled into a rich vein of his own and has smashed the Australian record for most wickets in a three-Test series. He has taken 27 wickets so far to move past Dennis Lillee, who took 23 in the 1979/80 series against England. Warne’s wickets have come at an incredible average of 12.66 runs per wicket.Warne has given himself every chance of becoming only the second player to take 500 wickets during the Ashes series, as he has now taken 477 wickets in his 104 Tests at an average of 25.73. Only West Indian Courtney Walsh has taken more Test wickets – 519.Warne has also moved into equal seventh place on the list of wickets taken in three-Test-match series, a position he shares with Pakistan’s Waqar Younis.Warne’s best figures in any series are the 34 he took on his first tour of England in 1993.If getting some respite from Warne is not enough, pace-man Glenn McGrath moved past the 400-mark in the same innings, only the second Australian to take that many wickets.McGrath, in his 87th Test, has now taken 403 wickets at 21.52.Those ahead of him are: Walsh, Warne, Kapil Dev (434), Richard Hadlee (431), Muttiah Muralitharan (430), Wasim Akram (414) and Curtly Ambrose (405).Most wickets for Australia in a three-Test series:

West Ham make Traore enquiry

As per Football Insider, West Ham United have now made an enquiry to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Adama Traore – and manager David Moyes already has plans in mind for his possible role.

The Lowdown: West Ham in hunt for attackers…

Moyes and co are on the lookout for any meaningful forward additions who can help to gift them much-needed strength in depth.

West Ham have arguably needed to complete the signing of a new attacker for some time, especially given Michail Antonio’s concerning injury record, with the Irons boss even confirming himself that offers had been lodged in January (BBC).

The search for forward men continues long into the summer window as Football Insider provide an update.

The Latest: Irons make Traore enquiry…

Indeed, the outlet say that West Ham have now made an enquiry to sign Traore, with manager Moyes already planning out a new role for him.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-updates/” title=”West Ham updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It is claimed the Scotsman believes Traore can spearhead West Ham’s attack next season despite being a natural winger.

Moyes thinks the 25-year-old could thrive as a centre-forward as well as operating out wide, a similar trajectory he has overseen for Antonio at the London Stadium.

While Traore is not West Ham’s number one priority, Moyes has him on the list, but Wolves are said to value him at a steep £50 million.

The Verdict: Quite a claim…

This is quite the claim to emerge given Traore’s lofty price tag.

If West Ham were to get a deal done hypothetically, there’s little doubting he would be an exciting addition – but not as a striker.

Former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo knew too well of the Spaniard’s quality during his time at Molineux, with the Portuguese calling him ‘amazing’, ‘unique’ and ‘so talented’ (The Athletic).

Meanwhile, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp called Traore ‘undefendable’ after the Reds’ 1-0 win at Wolves in March (Liverpool Echo).

In terms of a winger signing, there are arguably few better than him, especially considering he completed the most dribbles per 90 on average (4.1) out of any player in the Premier League over 2020/2021 (WhoScored).

However, given he bagged just two goals in that time, perhaps converting him to an out-and-out striker wouldn’t be the best move by Moyes.

Phillips backs Sunderland to sign Pigott

Sunderland have been offered advice by Kevin Phillips regarding their pursuit of Wimbledon striker Joe Pigott.

What’s the talk?

Sunderland legend Kevin Phillips has backed the club to swoop for Wimbledon centre-forward Joe Pigott to replace the outgoing Charlie Wyke this summer.

Celtic are reportedly closing in on a deal for Wyke and the Black Cats are said to be eyeing up the attacker from their League One rivals as a potential replacement.

Phillips has said that his statistics are impressive and that he will be a hero at the Stadium of Light if he can replicate his form on Wearside. He told Football Insider:

“His stats speak for themselves. A record of nearly one in two is a great strike rate.

“My only worry is, coming from Wimbledon, can he handle the pressure of playing for Sunderland? No disrespect to Wimbledon but Sunderland is a big step up.

“I haven’t seen too much of Pigott but the lad can score goals, that is clear. He could be the man to replace Charlie Wyke next season because it looks as if he will be moving on.

“If Lee can get Pigott in and he scores a lot of goals for Sunderland, he will be a hero straight away.”

Bye-bye Wyke

Wyke is out of contract this week and is said to be keen on a transfer to Scotland, which means that the time is right to say bye-bye to last season’s top scorer.

The club should not be trying to keep players who do not want to be in the building and the 26-goal forward seemingly falls into that category. This does, however, leave a major hole to fill in Lee Johnson’s squad and Kristjaan Speakman needs to act swiftly to fill it.

The Sunderland chief now needs to spring into action to seal a deal for the Wimbledon hitman. Pigott is an excellent attacker at League One level and enjoyed a fantastic season last term, scoring 20 times and assisting five goals for his teammates.

Former Wimbledon manager Wally Downes once praised the target man as being “magnificent” and said that he was being rewarded for his hard work, highlighting the quality he possesses at this level.

He told Echo News:

“Joe has been magnificent in the last six or seven weeks and he got his rewards for battling.

“He’s led the line really well lately and got another win.”

The 6ft 1 beast could, therefore, be exactly what Johnson needs in the transfer window. With his top scorer set to depart this week, the former Bristol City coach is in desperate need of a prolific attacker who can find the back of the net and that is what Pigott has been for Wimbledon.

The 27-year-old scored 20 times in League One for The Dons and that is why the Black Cats must sanction a deal to snap him up this summer to make sure that they do not end up missing Wyke’s influence on the team.

Celtic: KV Mechelen hope to sign Marian Shved again

KV Mechelen are hopeful of signing Celtic winger Marian Shved once more and the 23-year-old is reportedly keen on that happening, according to Belgian outlet HLN.

The Lowdown: Celtic gear up for 2021/22 campaign

Moving into 2021/22, it will be fascinating to see how new Hoops manager Ange Postecoglou reshuffles the pack as he looks to cultivate a squad capable of challenging for domestic silverware.

As a new era dawns at Celtic Park, much mystery still surrounds the remnants of the previous regime. One of those uncertain of his future at the club in recent times has been Shved, who spent the 2020/21 season on loan at Mechelen.

Could he be set to extend his stay in Belgium following recent developments?

The Latest: Shved keen on returning to Mechelen

The Daily Record reported last month that the Belgian Pro League outfit are set to approach the Glasgow giants over prolonging Shved’s loan spell as manager Wouter Vrancken went on record stating his desire to re-sign the Ukrainian, stating: “We have two loan players – Marian Shved and Ferdy Druijf – who have told us that they want to stay here next season too. So we have to see what Celtic and AZ say about it and try to come to an agreement with them.

On Monday, HLN reported that Vrancken hopes to have the aforementioned duo back at Mechelen next term. The manager commented: “They are eager to come back to play for us, but we are waiting for an agreement at club level. If they come in, then we are in very good shape for this season.”

The Verdict: Shved should extend his loan stint at Mechelen

Intriguingly, Celtic could use a player of the 23-year-old’s profile heading into a fresh campaign at Parkhead.

Excelling in Belgium circa 2020/21, Shved has managed to make 24 appearances for the AFAS Stadium inhabitants registering eight goal contributions; five goals and three assists [Transfermarkt].

Demonstrating his fearlessness in front of target, he had an average of 1.8 shots per 90 minutes across the calendar year [WhoScored]

Despite these promising signs, the former Sevilla winger needs to be partaking in regular football in what is a crucial stage of his career whether in Scotland or further afield. During his time with the Celts, Shved has only made featured three times scoring once [Transfermarkt].

If they can attract the ideal architype of positional replacement for Shved, Celtic should sanction another season-long loan deal to KV Mechelen to continue his footballing development.

In other news, Celtic are interested in an ambitious swoop for a Serie A midfielder.

Aston Villa: Fans react to club tweet about Grealish and Mings

Many Aston Villa fans have been venting on Twitter following a post from the club detailing the disappointment suffered by Villa duo Jack Grealish and Tyrone Mings after England’s crushing Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy.

Plenty of discourse centred around the lack of utilisation in relation to Grealish, who registered 19 goal contributions in 26 appearances for the club in 2020/21 [Transfermarkt].

In the 172 minutes that he played at the Euros, the 25-year-old contributed with two assists in five outings [UEFA.com] and played a cameo yet important role in England’s run to the final.

Meanwhile, Mings started the first two group games at the finals but played just 11 minutes thereafter and was not utilised at all in the knockout stages [Transfermarkt].

The comparative lack of involvement for the Villa duo at Euro 2020 duly had many of the club’s supporters venting at England manager Gareth Southgate.

Aston Villa fans react:

Replying to Villa’s official Twitter account, here is what some Villa fans had to say about the lack of minutes for Grealish and Mings at Euro 2020:

“Don’t worry lads, Southgate will be gone soon enough and then you won’t have to put up with his pathological picking of his favourites. How Mount got more minutes than Jack is utterly beyond belief, last night was embarrassing and showed us just how inept Southgate is”

Lymington to put pressure on leaders Easton

Easton & Martyr Worthy are currently 12 points clear of United Services at the top of the Southern Electric Premier League Division 2 – but their lofty status could be put under pressure at Lymington, 1pm

Mike Vimpany (as published in Daily Echo)28-Jun-2002Easton & Martyr Worthy are currently 12 points clear of United Services at the top of the Southern Electric Premier League Division 2 – but their lofty status could be put under pressure at Lymington, 1pm.The villagers have lost their West Indian all-rounder Keith Brewster, who has received an army posting to Scotland, and play on Lymington’s flat batting strip without effective opening bowler Trevor Yates, who picked up a leg injury last week.Lymington, in a mid-table fifth spot, are an unpredictable side, packed with batting and three spin bowling options.Lower-order performer Mike West underlined his pedigree with a sparkling century for Lymington in midweek – but whether it gets him a higher slot in the batting order remains to be seen.Lymington name a squad of 13, as teenage middle-order batsman Matt Malloy damaged a finger dropping a catch in midweek and may be ruled out.United Services go to Sparsholt, whose ranks are weakened by the absence of bowlers Mike Ball (groin) and Carl Nicols (broken toe), who both pulled up lame in last week’s 345-run mauling by Old Tauntonians & Romsey.Key all-rounder Ian Tulk is unavailable for OTs derby at Winchester, while Hampshire 2nd XI coach Tony Middleton plans to delay selection for the Academy’s home match against relegation troubled Trojans on the Rose Bowl Nursery ground.Middleton, who helped engineer a dramatic one-wicket win at US last week, has several of his more experienced teenagers back from university and may give James Schofield a break from league action.South African medium-pace bowler David Pryke has been re-registered by Hungerford and may play against bottom side Rowledge.Alton, who climbed to the Premier Division 3 summit by beating St Cross Symondians last week, expect off-spinner Matt Ireson back against Leckford, who ran up 334 last week. Spinner Chris White misses Leckford’s visit to the Jubilee Ground.Purbrook, beaten by both Bashley II and Paultons in the past fortnight, aim to halt a hat-trick of defeats at Hartley Wintney, who are scoring plenty of runs – but regularly concede 200-plus totals themselves.Hampshire’s Jimmy Adams expects to get the St Cross call at Hambledon, while in-form Bournemouth University graduate Paul Batchelor takes over from Saints skipper Jason Dodd as third-placed Flamingo bid to make it five wins in a rowagainst Waterlooville.New Milton’s Division 3 bid was knocked off course by Bashley (Rydal) II last week, so victory at Paultons tomorrow is essential if a promotion challenge is to be sustained. But Paultons are unpredictable. Struggling for runs all season, they posted 275 to knock Purbrook off the top of the table last week.Shock side Bashley II, who have gunned down both Purbrook and New Milton in the past fortnight, go to Hursley Park, with bottom side Redlynch & Hale preparing to go to Ventnor without several first choice players.
