Somerset end the day at Scarborough in a strong position

Somerset ended in a strong position at the end of the first day of their championship match against bottom of the table Yorkshire at Scarborough

Richard Walsh10-Jul-2002Somerset ended in a strong position at the end of the first day of their championship match against bottom of the table Yorkshire at Scarborough. After batting successes against Surrey in the last match opener Matt Wood came back down to earth when he was out for 5 with the score on 17.His opening partner Piran Holloway was joined by acting skipper Mike Burns and together they moved the score on to 49 before Burns was caught by MatthewWood off left arm seamer Ryan Sidebottom for 21.Veteran batsman Peter Bowler joined Holloway and saw up the hundred and the hundred and fifty before being parted with the score on 161. Holloway continued his return to form scoring by 69 before he was bowled by England spinner Richard Dawson.Between them the pair had added 112 for the fourth wicket.Bowler and Keith Parsons then took Somerset onto 246 before Bowler was also bowled by Dawson for 84. Parsons remained at the wicket a little longer before he was bowled by Yorkshire skipper Darren Lehmann for 59.With the score on 294 for 5 after 100 overs the players left the field for a short while, but returned for a further 2 overs during which time the Cidermen had taken their score onto 299 without further loss, with Blackwell on 34 and Rob Turner 8 at the close. At the end of the day Somerset coach Kevin Shine told me: "It’s been a very good day for us, all of the batters have applied themselves well and we have got ourselves into a good position."He continued: "It’s not a true wicket, and it is already starting to turn a little bit, which both Piran Holloway and Peter Bowler found out. With both of our spinners, Ian Blackwell and Keith Dutch in the side that suits us."He concluded: "Tomorrow we will looking to get beyond 400 which is well within our sights, and that should be a good score."

Zimbabwe fighting for survival in Bulawayo Test

Pakistan moved closer towards a clean sweep in the two-match Test series against Zimbabwe on the third day at Queens Sports Club

John Ward18-Nov-2002Pakistan moved closer towards a clean sweep in the two-match Test series against Zimbabwe on the third day at Queens Sports Club. After gaining a lead of 225 on first innings, they reduced Zimbabwe to 171 for five wickets. There was a quiet start to the morning as the overnight batsmen, Youhana and Kamran Akmal, completed their century partnership and continued to accumulate at their leisure, knowing they had time on their side and the bowling was never threatening. Runs came at an increasing rate, without the batsmen ever looking as if they were forcing the pace; there were enough loose balls for them to cruise.Suddenly Mluleki Nkala produced a well-pitched ball on the stumps, to trap Kamran (56) lbw as he moved in front of his stumps. Pakistan were 346 for six in the 115th over, so the rate was approaching three an over for the first time. Soon afterwards Youhana on 141 enjoyed the fourth definite life of his innings, as Raymond Price put down a hard head-high return catch. Zimbabwe continued to be their on worst enemies. 73 runs came in the first hour of play, for one wicket in 15 overs. It was finally the pitch that defeated Youhana, who had 159 off 285 balls in a six-hour innings when he was finally bowled by Price. The bounce on this pitch was always low but usually consistent, and this ball pitched on a good length squatted. It had been a determined innings but owed much to good fortune and Zimbabwean generosity in the field. The long Pakistani tail was scarcely need with a lead already of over 200, which was just as well. Saqlain Mushtaq (14) chipped Raymond Price to mid-on, and Mohammad Sami (1) edged Andy Blignaut to slip. Shoaib hit lustily, and there was a brief comedy of errors when he hit Blignaut for a massive skyer that either Andy Flower or Henry Olonga could have reached with ease but, hindered by the sun, neither got near. Instead, the batsmen ran two and brought up the 400.The innings finally closed at 403, when Waqar Younis (6) was well caught by Dion Ebrahim on the long-on boundary off Price, leaving Shoiab 9 not out. Pakistan therefore took a handsome lead of 225 on first innings, which could well be enough to win the match without the trouble of batting again. Price in his usual marathon on 51.3 overs took four wickets for 116 runs, while Olonga took three for 69.There was time for two overs of the Zimbabwe second innings before lunch, which the openers survived.Shoaib bowled the second over after lunch and Mark Vermeulen took full advantage of his attacking field, hitting four boundaries, the first an effortless perfectly-timed off-drive. Dion Ebrahim drove Waqar straight for four, but was then trapped lbw for 7 by a ball that came back off the pitch; Zimbabwe 28 for one.Vermeulen’s run spree came to a quick end on 26 as he, like Ebrahim, was beaten and trapped lbw playing half-forward to another off-cutter from Waqar. In the seventh over, Zimbabwe were 37 for two, so Pakistan’s attacking policy was paying off.Once again Zimbabwe relegated their best batsman to number five, with Grant Flower coming in ahead of Andy. Grant Flower dug in deep, while Campbell was more aggressive, playing some handsome drives but enjoying a life on 20 when dropped at second slip off Shoaib. He was at his best while driving, but could not resist briefly flirting with fire by trying to sweep Saqlain. After that, sensible batting and the willingness to punish the loose ball took them safely through until tea, and they continued in the same vein afterwards. When on 35 Flower survived a confident appeal for a catch that the wicket off Waqar, with the television camera appearing to confirm umpire Orchard’s decision as correct. Flower was batting with more fluency now and he caught Campbell when he reached 39.Shoaib hit Flower on the foot with two vicious sandshoe crushers, and on the helmet with a bouncer, giving him a torrid time before going round the wicket and having the good fortune to bowl him off his pad, off stump. Flower made 43 in 148 minutes, in a partnership of 88 with Campbell. As in the first innings, Shoaib’s third spell, with the older ball, was much more lethal than his earlier spells. Campbell and Andy Flower had to fight for survival, and again Saqlain proved an ideal foil at the other end. Campbell was relieved to cut a rare loose ball to reach his fifty off 142 balls. His unreliable concentration did not last much longer, though; trying to force Sami on the off side, he was bowled through the gate via the inside edge or 62; Zimbabwe 146 for four.Hamilton Masakadza looked very short of confidence at first, but as he settled he managed to find the odd classy attacking stroke and actually overtook Andy Flower, who looked secure if not fluent. But off the last ball of the day Masakadza (16) was caught off bat-pad off Saqlain, boosting Pakistan’s hopes of a four-day victory. Andy Flower, yet again condemned to bat with the tail, had 13.

Everton transfer update on Winks

Many Everton fans have been left slamming a transfer update involving Harry Winks.

Speaking on his Twitch channel (via The Everton End), transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has claimed that it is a ‘possibility’ that the Tottenham Hotspur man could end up at Goodison Park in the summer window.

With a mere four goals and just four assists in 173 games for Spurs over all competitions across the last seven consecutive seasons (Transfermarkt), the signing of Winks would not really be an inspiring one for the Merseyside club, and it is also arguably a position which they do not need to prioritise.

Rafa Benitez already has the likes of Abdoulaye Doucoure, Allan, Andre Gomes and Tom Davies who he can call upon in the centre of midfield, and so the Toffees should perhaps be focusing on other areas of the pitch.

These Blues supporters slammed the transfer update by Romano on Winks as it was shared on Twitter:

The Best Goals Scored In The Euros So Far

Recent European Championships have obtained a reputation for being goal-shy affairs, often without much in the way of highlight-reel worthy stunners. Arriving a year late has clearly allowed some pent up energy to build as Euro 2020 racks up the goals and a host of stunners to boot. As the tournament reaches the quarter-finals stage we’ve already been treated to outstanding strikes, including a long-range effort that will do down in the annals of football history – unless you’re a Scotland fan.

Let’s start with a man who wouldn’t have been on many people’s radar when it came to planning a Euro 2020 Squad Builder, Andriy Yarmolenko. The Ukraine and West Ham ace cut in from the right before delivering a trademark finish into the top right-hand corner from all of 25-yards.

Next up a goal with huge permutations as Wales reached the knockout phase for a second consecutive tournament thanks in many ways to an Aaron Ramsey delight. Running in behind a motionless Turkish defence, having already spurned numerous chances, the Juventus ace brought down an exquisite Gareth Bale pass before coolly slotting home from inside the area.

If there had been any doubts about whether the players could produce the quality after an arduous domestic campaign, they were put to bed when Turkey met Switzerland on the final matchday in Group A. After Haris Seferovic had opened the scoring with a driving left-footed strike from the edge of the box, Liverpool outcast Xherdan Shaqiri revved up his own left foot and produced two moments of sheer quality – the latter rounding off a sweeping counter-attack.

Despite ending up on the losing side, perhaps the brightest moment from a nightmarish campaign for Turkey came when Irfan Can Kahveci fired home a screamer after manipulating the ball inside with the sole of his foot.

Goals can be judged by many means, but one that can never go unnoticed is the importance of the moment. Fortunately for Andreas Christensen, his piledriver against Russia would be noteworthy regardless of scale. With the emotion of a nation and a full Parken Stadium in Copenhagen hanging on every moment, the centre-back seemed to appear from nowhere as the ball broke loose to fire home from all of 30 yards, sending Denmark through and the crowd wild.

Scotland fans look away now, and later. Another game on a knife-edge settled by a moment of pure genius as a man known for big moments, Luca Modric, produced once again. The Real Madrid man’s sumptuous strike with the outside of the right boot put Croatia back in control and ultimately broke the hearts of the Tartan Army.

Perhaps the shock of the tournament until now came when France were dumped out on penalties against Switzerland at the Round of 16 stage. Despite the disappointing night’s work, Karim Benzema and Paul Pogba found time to provide two memorable moments. The former produced one of the greatest touches ever seen at the Euros before chipping an onrushing Yan Sommer. Just 15 minutes later a dancing Pogba seemed to wrap up the tie with a postage stamp strike that almost took the net camera with it.

Many peoples in-tournament favourites, Italy were forced to go all the way to extra-time in their round-of-16 tie against Austria. With the prospect of penalties on the horizon, Juventus winger Federico Chiesa produced a much-need moment of magic with incredible control before unleashing an unstoppable volley from a tight angle.

Unfortunately, it’s time to look away again. No goal compilation that follows this tournament will be complete without a look at Patrik Schick’s quick thinking effort from inches shy of 50 yards out. Created by a fortunate deflection, Schick was playing in 4D after spotting David Marshall way off his line and sending a pinpoint effort curling over the back-pedalling Scot – creating meme-worthy content in the process.

Honourable mentions should go to certain Cristiano Ronaldo and Kevin de Bruyne efforts, albeit not worthy of ousting any of the above.

As the competition reaches the last eight stage we can look forward to yet more memorable moments, goals, shocks and potentially even an effort worthy of beating Patrik Schick’s procession to Goal of the Tournament.

Southampton in talks over Mario Lemina sale

Southampton are in talks regarding a deal which would see Mario Lemina leave St Mary’s this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by French media outlet Le10 Sport (via Sport Witness), who claimed that, following a €4m (£3.5m) offer from Nice being rejected by Southampton, talks are ongoing between the two clubs regarding the midfielder’s potential sale in the summer transfer window.

The report added that, while there is still ground to be made up between the two clubs’ respective valuations of the 27-year-old, talks this weekend could see a breakthrough which may all but secure his switch to the south of France ahead of next season.

Fans surely buzzing

Having cost Southampton €20m (£18.1m) to sign from Serie A outfit Juventus four years ago, it is an easy argument to make that Lemina has not proven fantastic value for money for the south coast club.

Indeed, having featured just 52 times for Saints during his time at the club, as well as being sent out on loan for the last two seasons, it is evident that the £64,000-per-week midfielder is not a key part of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s plans at Saint Mary’s.

The Gabon international has not exactly flopped when given the opportunity in a Southampton shirt, earning an impressive seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.98 and 6.89 in his first two seasons at the club respectively. However, if the 53-year-old Saints manager has no intention of playing the £9m-rated midfielder, it would indeed seem wise to move him on while he is still under contract with the club.

Furthermore, should Nice pay a fee for the man Garth Crooks dubbed a “powerhouse”, this money – plus whatever is saved on Lemina’s considerable wages – could easily be put towards improving Southampton’s squad ahead of next season. That possibility would surely have fans of the club buzzing.

West Ham fans want Irons to sign Danny Ings

Many West Ham United fans are desperate for the club to sign Danny Ings this summer after it was revealed he turned down a four-year contract at Southampton.

The Hammers enjoyed a fantastic campaign last time out as they finished sixth in the Premier League, which means they will be competing in the Europa League in 2021/22. However, David Moyes will surely need to add to his striking options – he currently only has one natural centre-forward at his disposal in Michail Antonio, who has had his share of injury troubles.

The Irons should be busy in transfer market as they prepare for the new campaign, and they may have an eye on Ings now that this big development has emerged. Indeed, talkSPORT’s Alex Crook claimed a few weeks ago that West Ham were chasing the 28-year-old.

The Athletic reported that Ings – a scorer of 101 senior career goals – has the rejected a new contract offer at St Mary’s, even though it would have made him the best-paid player in Southampton’s history had he accepted.

As a result, many West Ham fans want their club to sign the former Liverpool striker, and they took to social media platform Twitter to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what these fans had to say about Ings’ contract snub

“Get him and Adam Armstrong and I will be a happy man, Antonio can go back out wide and we will have 2 top strikers fighting it out”

“He has to be on our list of striker targets surely… Would be a great signing if we could get him!”

“This is the signing we should be going all out for. Proven PL striker, carried that awful Southampton team. Would rather this than taking a punt on someone from abroad who could be another Haller”

Wolves urged to sign Lewis Dunk

Bruno Lage wrapped up the transfer of Trincao on Sunday morning in what was a huge boost to Wolves’ chances next season.

That being said, bad news could be on the way with Conor Coady, Ruben Neves and Adama Traore all linked with the exit door.

What’s the word?

If Coady does leave, Wolves will have a challenge on their hands to replace him.

They’ve already been touted with Burnley centre-back James Tarkowski but Old Gold legend Steve Bull is entertaining the idea of another English defender heading to Molineux.

Speaking to This is Futbol over the weekend, the club’s all-time record scorer commented: “I want to see experience come into Wolves and someone like Tarkowski from Burnley or Lewis Dunk at Brighton, just somebody who has been there and done it in the Premier League.”

The Brighton defender was the subject of interest from Leicester a few years ago as they weighed up a whopping £40m offer.

Dunk is now valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt.

Bye-bye Coady

Should the Wolves skipper depart this summer they’d be foolish to ignore Dunk.

After all, the central defender bullied Nuno Santo’s men on two occasions last term, as he scored in back to back games against the Midlands side.

He was a menace from set-piece scenarios when the two clubs drew 3-3 with each other back in January.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-wolves-transfer-news-ceballos-zinchenko-euros-felix-lage” title=”Read the latest Wolves transfer news!”]

Bizarrely, it was diminutive midfielder Ruben Neves who was marking the 6 foot 4 frame of Dunk during that encounter, as the Englishman got the better of him to find the back of the net.

Dunk was a huge threat when the two teams played each other in May as well. Wolves came from behind to win following a red card to the 29-year-old but before then, he caused chaos from corners.

Neves was charged with marking him again in a rather naive move from the manager as he was beaten in the air to score in successive games versus the Old Gold.

The Brighton star was described as “outstanding” last season and it’s clear to see why. Dunk scored five goals on his way to winning 2.4 aerial duels per match.

That not only equals Wolves’ top scorer last season in Pedro Neto, but in terms of aerial battles, only Willy Boly, Romain Saiss and Leander Dendoncker won more.

After Wolves shipped 52 league goals last term, they will desperately need defensive recruits. Dunk can be erratic at times but would undoubtedly add more physicality to their backline.

AND in other news, Imagine him & Trincao: Wolves must sign “remarkable” 22-goal beast with “magic” feet…

Canterbury continues to struggle against financial bouncers

Canterbury joined Northern Districts as the only New Zealand cricket associations unable to record a surplus over the last year.Canterbury’s loss was $54,231, an increase of $21,077 on last year. This was achieved with less total operating revenue from last year. This year the amount was $1,947,621, down $143,751 from last year.Administration costs were up by $20,368 to $379,044 while, in line with other associations, coaching and development costs were up by $41,376 to $230,468.Accumulated funds reflected the deficit and stand at $372,981.Canterbury Cricket’s board chairman David Shackleton commented in the annual report, to be presented to tomorrow night’s annual meeting, that the board was very disappointed with the result.”Unfortunately most of the costs of operating Canterbury Cricket are fixed or determined by outside influences, particularly the playing schedules for national competitions.”To improve the financial position of the CCA it will be necessary to significantly increase revenue from all sources. The board and management have developed a strategic plan which focuses on all aspects of cricket in Canterbury, but with a significant focus on revenue improvement.”This will be a key driver for the next and subsequent years,” he said.Canterbury’s new chief executive, Richard Reid said the Association’s strategic plan was now complete and continuous improvement should be seen as a result in all aspects of cricket administration in Canterbury.”The districts have a special and unique place within cricket in Canterbury. I feel we have not taken advantage of this as much as we could have. I have spent considerable time with them since I have been here and I am committed to an inclusive philosophy so that all cricketers in Canterbury feel part of that process,” he said.On the playing side operations manager Trudy Anderson said the season of 2002/03 would be one to look forward as the result of plans put in place during the winter.”The involvement of past players in think tanks in order to produce a unique Canterbury playing philosophy has been just one innovation to make the pathway consistent for players through representative grade.”The women’s high performance plan which resulted from a well-attended forum also highlights the direction for growth in the women’s area. There is an intention to expand the Community Cricket Programme into more areas and the shift to Iversen Terrace will provide a long overdue indoor training facility for all of Canterbury,” he said.Meanwhile, as many sports lose the support of their volunteer core, Reid was impressed with Canterbury’s volunteers.”I have enjoyed meeting with the wide variety of stakeholders that make up the cricket fraternity in Canterbury and I am constantly amazed at the depth of the volunteer base and their willingness and ability to keep a myriad of ‘balls in the air’ at any given time,” he said.
