Midlands do well on Day 1 in Harare

Midlands did well to restrict Mashonaland to 245 for five wickets on the first day of their Logan Cup match at Harare Sports Club after taking the dubious decision to put the champions in on winning the toss.Stand-in captain Don Campbell, who should know the Harare Sports Club pitch well enough, hoped for early life, but this is not the Sports Club pitch of old. Since Dirk Moore-Gordon took over as groundsman, the rogue pitches of the past have faded into not-so-pleasant memory and Harare is usually as good for batting as anywhere else in the country; in fact, wherever they play in Zimbabwe now, batsmen can be virtually assured of a good deal and bowlers of a challenge to lift their game to match the conditions. With last season’s captain Stuart Carlisle dropped for lack of form, Mashonaland opened with Darlington Matambanadzo, who has scored a packet of runs captaining the B team, and Trevor Gripper. They put on a comfortable 59 together, helped by some wayward bowling from the out-of-form David Mutendera, before Matambanadzo fell for 21. Gripper, his stone-walling days apparently behind him, batted fluently for his 41 before cutting a ball straight to gully, where Sean Ervine plucked the catch very smartly just above ankle-height.Dion Ebrahim has looked strangely out of sorts after his 182 in Mutare, and he only made 9, while Andy Flower fell for 20. The best innings of the day was played by Grant Flower, who became a little bogged down at times but fought through it, and was no doubt furious to be bowled round his legs trying to sweep Raymond Price minutes before the early close for bad light, for 83.The day had begun with humidity high, and a storm broke just after lunch, delaying play by an hour, so together with the early close only 75 overs were possible during the day. Midlands’ main challenge will be to remove Craig Evans quickly on the second morning; he is still at the crease ominously on 44. But so far they have done better than either Matabeleland or Manicaland managed against the Mashonaland juggernaut.

Leeds target Harrison Reed is perfect for Bielsa

Leeds United transfer target Harrison Reed could solve a major problem for Marcelo Bielsa amid David Norris’ transfer claim.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent days and weeks have linked them with a move for Cagliari dynamo Nahitan Nandez, before The Daily Mail claimed that that the Whites tracked Fulham’s Reed last season with a view to a summer swoop.

It was suggested that with the Cottagers’ relegation from the Premier League, Leeds see the midfielder as an “excellent addition”, and now Norris has thrown his backing behind a potential move.

Speaking exclusively to This is Futbol, the former Leeds man said: “The key things with the players that Leeds want to bring in is that they have to suit their high tempo style of play and the manager has to trust them.

“Looking at Reed from the outside looking in, he fits the bill, is busy, looks like he can graft, he is a team player and he’s got a bit of quality as well.”

Solves Bielsa’s problem

A regular presence for the Cottagers last season, the £9m-rated Reed made 31 appearances in the top-flight, often playing alongside Andre Zambo Anguissa in the heart of midfield.

As per Sofascore, Reed won four duels per game in the Premier League last season, as well as making an impressive two tackles and 1.6 interceptions per match while also winning back possession 0.6 times.

To put that into context, Chelsea star and recent Champions League winner N’Golo Kante averaged 3.7 duels won and made 2.6 tackles and two interceptions per game. He also won back possession just as often as Reed at 0.6 times per match.

It’s no surprise that the 26-year-old’s former boss Tony Mowbray has waxed lyrical about the kind of engine Reed possesses, and also the kind of attitude he has – all shades of Chelsea’s midfield dynamo.

The Blackburn manager said: “

Immense! He’s been fantastic playing in a wide position, working like a trojan, running forward, blocking off the wide play, helping his full-back, in to out, in to out, and yet playing centre-mid today, it shows you where his true position really is on the pitch.

“He’s a fantastic player, but beyond his playing ability, his personality fits in amazingly well with our group.”

One of the big issues last season was having someone who could fill Kalvin Phillips’ shoes when he was missing from action, with the Whites actually winning just twice in the nine Premier League games that he was unavailable for.

In the tough-tackling Reed, Leeds could have someone who would be more than capable of stepping into the breach when required to be the anchorman in front of the back-four, and given his tigerish work-rate and personality, seems a perfect fit for Bielsa’s demands.

Meanwhile, Beren Cross has dropped a Leeds United transfer update…

Sri Lanka secure tenth consecutive win on home soil

Sri Lanka completed formalities shortly before the scheduled luncheoninterval on the fourth day, bowling out Bangladesh for 184 to secure theirtenth consecutive victory on home soil; and their first win without theservices of Muttiah Muralitharan

Charlie Austin30-Jul-2002Sri Lanka completed formalities shortly before the scheduled luncheoninterval on the fourth day, bowling out Bangladesh for 184 to secure theirtenth consecutive victory on home soil; and their first win without theservices of Muttiah Muralitharan since the off-spinner started his career in1992.The tourists, led by 17-year-old Mohammad Ashraful, who confirmed hispotential after a lean period since becoming the youngest ever Testcenturion last September, kept the Sri Lankans at bay for the first hourbefore a collapse that saw six wickets fall for 17 runs. The right-handed Ashraful scored 75 from 120 balls, hitting 12 boundaries, adding 68 runs for the fifth wicket with Alok Kapali (23), whose all-roundperformance on his debut Test drew praise afterwards from coach MohsinKamal. But mid-way through the morning off-spinner Thilan Samaraweera dismissedboth players within the space of eight minutes: Kapali was brilliantlycaught by Jehan Mubarak diving to his right at short leg off bat-pad, whilstAshraful was unfortunate to have also adjudged to have been caught at shortleg off pad only – the luck, not for the first time in this game, not goingBangladesh’s way.Left-armer Sujeewa de Silva, replacing Chamila Gamage, who beat the batrepeatedly during his brisk opening five burst, quickly nipped out TapashBashar (3), courtesy of a stunning airborne catch by Upul Chandana in thegully, and then Fahim Muntasir (1) with a curling yorker.Samaraweera wrapped up proceedings, as the close in fielders snapped up twomore catches: Manjural Islam (0) and Talha Jubair (0) both completing apair.Sri Lanka’s celebrations were muted at the end, the captain and coachadmitting that the victory, though a welcome after a series of defeats, wasof little relevance; the most important aspect of the series being theemergence of fast bowler Chamila Gamage and the batting of Michael Vandort, the Man of the Match here after scores of 61 and 140.”The results from England are still fresh in the mind and it was importantto comeback against Bangladesh as strongly as possible,” said coach DavWhatmore. “A lot of people will say that this is what we are expected to doagainst Bangladesh, and we are painfully aware of that, but you have to pickup the pieces somewhere.”Sanath Jayasuriya, back smiling again, said: “We may have won this seriesbut you can’t say that everything is going our way yet. In these conditionswe know we can do it, but we need to prove ourselves outside Sri Lanka andthere is a lot of hard work to be done in all departments of our game.”He admitted that defeat in England had affected morale: “The truth is thatEngland badly affected our confidence – we didn’t perform up to our ownstandards and it was very disappointing for the whole team. Slowly we haveto get back our old confidence.”The captain, originally uncomfortable with the selector’s experimentation inthis series, was especially delighted by Gamage’s bowling: “Chamila (Gamage)has shown his potential in this match – I think he can compete on theinternational stage.””I’m also impressed with the performance of Michael Vandort,” he added. “Hegrabbed his opportunity in this game and showed that he can score runs inthe top order.”For Bangladesh it was a familiar tale, coach Mohsin Kamal admitting that itwas hard to keep the players positive as the defeats stack up. This wastheir 12th loss in 13 Tests and the 11th consecutive innings in which theyhave failed to pass 200.”It is hard to lose continuously as half of cricket is played in thedressing room,” said Kamal, after his first series in charge, “but the guysjust have to be positive when they are there preparing themselves.”But he remained upbeat about the future: “We got some youngsters in the sidefor this match and they showed that they have a lot of talent – they justneed more experience in Test and four-day cricket.”He singled out the bowlers for special praise: “The bowlers did well, especially yesterday when they were under pressure – they bowled beautifully inthe morning, restricting the Sri Lankan batsmen.”I was also really pleased with the performance of Ashraful. He was under alot of pressure to score runs after not getting runs in the side matches andnot playing in the first Test. He has shown his ability.”Bangladesh can, at least, seek some comfort in the fact that they are notalone in finding it difficult to adjust to the demands of Test cricket: SriLanka had to wait 14 matches before their first victory, Zimbabwe took 11games, India 25 and New Zealand a staggering 45 – Bangladesh will surely notwait that long.

Celtic urged to sign Souttar

Celtic have been urged to sign former Dundee United defender Harry Souttar…

What’s the talk?

Celtic reporter Anthony Haggerty has urged the club to pursue a deal for Stoke central defender Harry Souttar this summer. He has said that the centre-back has “flourished” since moving down to England from Dundee United and believes that he would be a great fit in Ange Postecoglou’s team next season.

He told This is Futbol:

“Harry Souttar would be a person of interest, especially since they know him from his time with Dundee United.

“He’s gone down south and flourished. If I’m doing my scouting right, Harry Souttar’s on the list. We need defenders and you can scout Europe, Far East Asian markets and Australian markets, but you have to know what’s under your nose.

“I think Harry Souttar could be a fit for Celtic.”

Forget Ajer

Kristoffer Ajer joined Premier League side Brentford earlier this week on a five-year deal and it is now time for Celtic fans to forget about him and start thinking about the player who could be bossing their defence next season. That player could be Souttar if the Hoops are able to prize him away from Championship side Stoke in the coming weeks left of the transfer window.

Postecoglou must ensure that Celtic are looking at the 22-year-old as a target as he could be a fantastic addition to the squad and help improve the defence. The defender enjoyed a sublime 2020/21 campaign with the Potters, averaging a WhoScored rating of 7.07 across 38 starts.

What makes his statistics all the more impressive is the fact that Stoke finished 14th in the Championship, which means that he was able to consistently produce top-drawer displays despite his team as a whole underperforming and being nowhere near the promotion race. He was able to stand out ahead of his teammates, showing off his quality as a defender.

The £5.2k-per-week powerhouse won an eye-catching 5.4 aerial battles per game last season, more than the 3.2 Ajer won. Souttar also made more clearances and blocks per game than the Norweigan, whilst their tackle and interception numbers were very similar. This suggests that he could be an apt replacement for the defender and that is why Celtic must pursue a deal for him to bolster their squad ahead of next season in order to give themselves the best chance of competing with Rangers for the title.

Leeds United back in for Rangers’ Ryan Kent

Leeds United appear to be back in for Rangers star Ryan Kent this summer amid speculation over a move last year.

What’s the story?

It was confirmed in the summer of 2020 by Gers boss Steven Gerrard that the Premier League side had a bid rejected by the Ibrox outfit, and that Leeds’ initial bid was nowhere near their valuation.

Then, Victor Orta admitted that a deal for the winger was never likely to happen because the Scottish club simply didn’t “want to sell him”, and that it was “never their plan to put Kent in the market”.

Now, The Athletic claim that Marcelo Bielsa’s men retain an interest in the 24-year-old as they look to strengthen their wide options ahead of the new Premier League season next month.

Bielsa will be buzzing

Given that Leeds wanted him last summer, and were only unable to do so because Rangers dug their heels in and refused to let him go, Bielsa will surely be buzzing at the news that the Whites remain interested in him.

Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd has waxed lyrical about the winger saying: “There’s Ryan Kent who is phenomenal – he gets you off your seat. His numbers have increased season after season. Even if the team are not at the level we saw at the start of the campaign, he is still a threat. He is so comfortable with the ball – it is like has superglue in his boots!”

And, speaking back in May, former Premier League and Leeds striker Carlton Palmer backed a move to Leeds for Kent, saying exclusively to FFC: “Listen, Champions League or no Champions League, the place to play is in the Premier League. If he got the opportunity to go and play in the Premier League, I’m sure he’ll go and play in the Premier League.

“He’s got maybe an opportunity to play in the Premier League. For me, as a manager, as a player, the place to be now or the place to play is in the English Premier League.”

While a permanent deal for Jack Harrison has already been completed, and Raphinha will no doubt be a starter on the right flank, Bielsa is in need of some quality strength in depth outside of those two.

And in a player who bagged 13 goals and provided 15 assists last season, and was actually fouled more times per game than Raphinha, the Leeds boss can find exactly that.

It’s exactly why this latest update is sure to have the Leeds boss buzzing, he’d love to have Ryan Kent in his squad.

Meanwhile, Leeds are closing in on a major agreement…

Leeds United now interested in Jeremie Boga

Leeds United are now said to be interested in former Chelsea starlet Jeremie Boga as they look to strengthen Marcelo Bielsa’s forward options.

What’s the story?

The Whites have only made two significant first-team signings this summer, bringing in Junior Firpo from Barcelona and finally securing Jack Harrison on a permanent deal from Manchester City.

Now, The Daily Mail claim that the Yorkshire club have shown an interest in signing Sassuolo forward Boga, who was previously on the books at Stamford Bridge.

The report adds that Serie A side Atalanta have made an offer for the Ivory Coast international, while Leeds’ fellow Premier League teams Everton and Crystal Palace are also said to be keen.

Bye-bye Helder Costa

Amid an impressive season for the club as a whole, one man who really struggled to live up to expectations, was Helder Costa.

The Portugal international just didn’t seem to find his feet at Premier League level, managing just three goals in 22 games in the competition.

That has seen reports now linking him with a move away, with claims that the Whites are ready to cash in on the winger in order to raise some funds for a new signing.

And, after reports emerged of his potential departure, Gabby Agbolahor said: “Costa did not do enough to stay at Leeds. They definitely need another winger. Costa’s had his chance and he’ll be definitely moved on.”

Well, in Boga, they could get that Costa replacement.

Speaking about him before, former Chelsea coach Michael Beale said: “The most unique talent and I’m talking in a window of being 13/14 and he just beat the other team possibly on his own is a young boy called Jeremie Boga.

“He just beat teams on his own, such a lovely boy. I thought wow, this boy is a supreme talent. he can stop and go and over three or four yards, he can just drift past you.”

As per WhoScored, last season saw Boga triple the number of dribbles the Portuguese made per game, while he also averaged more shots and made the exact amount of key passes too – an indication of the kind of directness and fearlessness with which the Sassuolo man plays.

Given that not only can he play on the left, but also on the right too, the Ivorian would add greater strength in depth and quality to the wide options that Bielsa has, and further push Costa down the pecking order.

The £18m-rated Boga’s arrival would surely spell the end for Costa at Elland Road.

Meanwhile, Leeds United have reignited their interest in this star…
