Hayden thinks about one-day exit

A lingering heel injury has forced Matthew Hayden to consider his limited-overs future, but he says he still has the desire to continue in the format

A lingering heel injury has forced Matthew Hayden to consider his limited-overs future, but he says he still has the desire to continue in the format despite having to pull out of the series against Bangladesh. Hayden, who picked up the problem in April, said he was keen to keep appearing in coloured clothes – “at least for this summer”.”I really enjoy it so providing I can hold my spot I will definitely be playing more one-day cricket,” he told the Australian. “It’s not like I’ve played 300 games. I came late to one-day cricket and have played about 150 [161] games.”Hayden was the player of the 2007 World Cup and is the ICC’s one-day player of the year, but he will turn 37 in October and knows time is running out. “I want to finish off the desire I have to play one-day cricket without being selfish because it’s important the team has plenty of time to prepare for the next World Cup,” he said. “That’s still a long way off, but I won’t be ruthless about trying to push on. I don’t want to hang on too long.”Australia will have another look at the future during the three matches against Bangladesh in Darwin, starting from Saturday. Shaun Marsh, Shane Watson and Brad Haddin are contenders for the opening spots while David Hussey and Cameron White may also receive significant game time. The cancellation of the Champions Trophy has disrupted Australia’s pre-season, but given Hayden a greater opportunity to recover from the Achilles problem.”In the short term it’s disappointing, but in the longer term it’s really good because it gives me extra time to get right for India,” Hayden said. “India is a hugely challenging and iconic series. There have been a lot of distractions lately with the rise of Twenty20 cricket but the premium product is still Test cricket and one of the premium events is playing India.”

Siddons targets 240 as team total

Jamie Siddons: “We used to score over 200 runs only about 25% of the time, but since I have been here it has gone up to 50%” © TigerCricket.com

Jamie Siddons, the Bangladesh coach, has targetted 240 as the total his team should try and score every time they bat during the Asia Cup. “If we can regularly score 240, which we rarely do, we can be competitive and hopefully win a few games,” Siddons told the Dhaka-based .Looking at the positives within his team, Siddons said it was good to see Bangladesh were no longer relying only on Mohammad Ashraful to get big scores. “Now we have Raqibul [Hasan] , we have Shakib [Al Hasan], we have Tamim [Iqbal] – they are all capable of making 90 or 100 at international level against the better teams. I know it will come together at some point and when they all perform at the same time, we will be a good team. What we are trying to tell people is that it’s not just about Ashraful, it’s about the rest of the players around him performing. Once that starts to happen, Ashraful will be a bonus.”Siddons was also pleased that the team was scoring more than 200 and batting out 50 overs more often than they used to. “We used to score over 200 runs only about 25% of the time, but since I have been here it has gone up to 50%. That is a start. Things are not going to turn around overnight with this team. We have changed the team a fair bit; lots of younger players have come into the side. At the moment, we have the young guys learning the game at the international level and I see some really good performances.”Siddons defended the ‘Team Rules’ that he drew up for each player and denied they were having an adverse effect on the players’ natural game. “When I first came here, everyone was saying to me – you have got to stop Ashraful from playing rash shots all the time. Now that he has stopped playing rash shots, you are telling me to let him play them. So I am not sure what everyone wants. But with Ash batting at three, I think it’s perfect. He can play his natural game until we lose two wickets. After that, he has to play a little bit more sensibly.”Siddons said it was a reality that other teams were better than Bangladesh and his players knew that. “Out there it is a tough game for them with the skill level they have got. Our batsmen average 20; batsmen in other teams average 35. So it’s 350 for them versus 200 for us. That is the reality of the situation.”Siddons was also critical of the infrastructure available to the domestic players, and said there was a need to get better coaches to Bangladesh. “Even the Premier League clubs have terrible training facilities.” He also said the first-class structure was not producing players good enough for the international circuit. “In our domestic cricket, we don’t have bowlers who bowl at over 130 kph. Yet, at the international level, every side has got bowlers who bowl at 140-145 kph. That is a massive difference.”Also, bowlers in international cricket tend to be a lot taller than the ones our batsmen face in domestic cricket, which again makes a massive difference. You can’t learn it until you face it. You can’t try it in the nets, can’t try it with the bowling machine. That is why our players fail when they first get into international cricket. So improving the quality of domestic cricket, making the wickets bounce a lot more would make a big difference.”Bangladesh open their Asia Cup campaign with a match against UAE on June 24.

Maguire: Newcastle spending ‘ridiculous’

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has slammed Mike Ashley after Newcastle United released their 2019/20 accounts.

The lowdown

Newcastle were the final Premier League club to publish their figures for the first pandemic-hit season. Maguire has crunched the numbers, and they show a total spend of £216m on the 2019/20 squad. That’s lower than Watford and Bournemouth, who were both relegated.

Newcastle went on to spend £35.1m ahead of the 2020/21 campaign, with Callum Wilson and Jamal Lewis the headline arrivals. They have yet to make a signing this summer, although they may be close to ending that famine after a fee was agreed for Joe Willock.

The latest

Maguire told The Athletic that it was ‘ridiculous’ that two relegated teams had spent more on their squad than the Magpies.

He opined: “For Newcastle to have a lower spend than Watford and Bournemouth is ridiculous. As a neutral, I’d expect Newcastle to spend a similar amount to West Ham, Everton and Leicester. But they’re nowhere near them.

“It is just indicative of what Ashley does. He really only spends a significant amount one in every three years and, unfortunately, this is not one of those years.”

Maguire continued: “It is frustrating for supporters. But Ashley looks at it this way: ‘If you were selling your house, would you do up the kitchen first?”

The verdict

The figures underline the difficult position in which successive Newcastle managers have been placed. It’s easy to understand why a coach of Rafael Benitez’s calibre might have become frustrated, with a financial handbrake effectively put in place.

The squad that the Magpies have is good enough to stay in the Premier League, so Steve Bruce did deserve criticism for his side’s flirtation with the bottom three. However, he can’t really be expected to achieve much more than lower mid-table under this frugal model.

In other news, Lee Ryder says a fee has been agreed for this Newcastle youngster.

Pundit says Tottenham should keep Giovani Lo Celso - Exclusive

Several departures are expected at Tottenham this summer, but Paul Stewart exclusively told Football FanCast that he doesn’t believe Giovani Lo Celso should be on that list.

Following two disappointing league finishes in the last two seasons, Nuno Espirito Santo, along with director of football Fabio Paratici, are currently dealing with the “painful rebuild” that Mauricio Pochettino said was necessary in 2019.

Juan Foyth was the first through the exit door and has been joined by Erik Lamela going to Sevilla, with Toby Alderweireld are expected to leave for Qatari outfit Al-Duhail.

However, those three won’t be the last to be moved on, with plenty of interest in Santo’s squad.

One of those is Argentine Lo Celso, who’s on Barcelona’s radar having failed to settle in north London since signing from Real Betis on loan and then permanently four months later.

Lo Celso has shown glimpses, but his role at Tottenham has never quite been apparent despite making 65 appearances since moving from Spain.

However, Stewart has seen enough to suggest that Lo Celso could still make the grade in N17.

He told Football FanCast:

“I’d keep him because I think he could come good. It takes time to settle sometimes.

“He’s shown enough when I’ve seen him on the pitch to suggest he could become a really good player for Spurs, so I would be looking at keeping him for at least another season.”

Procter satisfied with security in Pakistan

Mike Procter, the ICC match referee from South Africa, who is in Pakistan for the ongoing Asia Cup, has said that he is satisfied with the security situation in the country

Mike Procter, the ICC match referee who is in Pakistan for the ongoing Asia Cup, has said that he is satisfied with the security situation in the country and that it should not be an impediment to hosting the Champions Trophy in September.”I see no reason why Pakistan should not host the Champions Trophy. I find Pakistan a safe place and have been here twice this year,” Procter told AFP in Lahore. “This is my personal opinion … I was here in March [for the five-match series featuring Bangladesh] and I’m here now, and I found the security arrangements to be fantastic.”The foreign umpires who have been with me during the Asia Cup also felt very safe and I would love to come to Pakistan for future events whenever I get appointments.”Proctor, who was in Pakistan in 2002 when a suicide bombing outside the New Zealand team’s hotel led to the postponement of the tour, said: “It was a different situation then. It was a suicide bomb blast … even at that time, the security was the best. We are more conscious about it now as the situation around the world since 9/11 has become volatile.”Meanwhile, there are reports that the ICC is considering South Africa as an option to host the event in case it doesn’t take place in Pakistan. “South Africa could hold the Champions Trophy in case Pakistan or Sri Lanka [the alternate venue] can’t,” an ICC source told AFP. “But it must be stressed that Pakistan remains our first choice and a lot of work has already been done to ensure the tournament is held there.” The source also said that Johannesburg, Centurion and Potchefstroom will be hosting the Champions Trophy matches in case the tournament is shifted to South Africa. The ICC board will meet on Sunday in Dubai, where they will analyse a security report before making a decision on the matter.

Tottenham: Kane to return later this week

Harry Kane is ‘planning to return to training with Tottenham later this week’, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The lowdown

Kane was due to report back on Monday after his post-European Championships break, but he was absent.

It’s seemingly a strategy the player has adopted in an attempt to force a move to reigning Premier League champions Manchester City.

City made a player-plus-cash bid for Kane earlier in the summer worth around £100million, but Spurs are holding out for £150million.

That would make the Englishman the second-most expensive signing of all time behind Neymar.

The latest

Kane will report back to Hotspur Way in the coming days and hold discussions about his future with the club, Romano revealed.

He assured Spurs fans that ‘Harry will be back soon’ but also warned of the player’s desire to take on ‘a new challenge’ and indeed play Champions League football.

The verdict

Should Spurs fans be encouraged? Perhaps the fear was that Kane would refuse to engage in any sort of dialogue with his club, feeling aggrieved that the ‘gentleman’s agreement’ he supposedly had with Daniel Levy had not been honoured.

You’d imagine that the talks will see both sides reaffirm their intentions. Spurs may simply tell Kane that he can leave if the £150million offer arrives – they’re certainly within their rights to adopt that stance given his choice to sign an extended contract.

Supporters will be holding out hope that City fail to stump up such a sum, instead prioritising Jack Grealish, and that Kane would be able to refocus if an exit didn’t materialise.

Leeds fans criticise Koch’s performance

A number of Leeds United supporters have laid into Robin Koch’s first-half performance against Manchester United.

The White have started their Premier League season with a trip to Old Trafford, in the latest chapter in a long rivalry between the two clubs.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side are aiming to replicate last season’s performance, in which the Whites finished ninth in the table and impressed neutrals with their style of play.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359346″]

An entertaining opening 45 minutes saw the hosts have the better of the chances though, and Bruno Fernandes’ goal is the difference between the sides.

Bielsa has opted to play Koch in midfield, but it looks a decision that hasn’t paid off, with the centre-back struggling in an unfamiliar role.

A resposta veio no minuto seguinte.
