High winds lead to farcical finish

ScorecardA full house at Canterbury was left far from impressed as cricket’s regulations once again contrived to scupper a well-balanced contest. High winds prevented the floodlights being raised which meant the match was abandoned six overs into Leicestershire’s run chase. The match was always likely to end this way as the winds were gusting well above the permitted 28mph limit from before the start of play. There was nothing in the playing conditions to allow for a shortened match so the umpires, Ian Gould and Richard Illingworth, had no option but to start a 40-over match at the scheduled time.Kent’s innings was completed without any problems, but already the light was fading. After a full-length interval the Leicestershire openers came out at dusk and were already having problems picking up the ball. The aim had been to try and reach the 10-over mark, where Duckworth-Lewis would have allowed a result. If Leicestershire had been no wickets down their target was 38, but they lost two scalps within six overs and would have needed to be 58 after 10 overs. Captain Paul Nixon came out at No. 4 and was quickly motioning that he couldn’t see. He was late on a slower-ball from Azhar Mahmood and the umpires came together. Nixon and Robert Key shared wry grins – both captains knew this had been coming for a long time.In the end one point each was a fair result for the teams, but it was a far from satisfactory evening for the game. Kent offered to refund spectators, while both sides were left calling for some reworking of the playing conditions to allow for common sense if such conditions occur again.

Newcastle keen on Ramsey

An update has emerged on Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey, regarding Newcastle’s interest in his services.

What’s the talk?

According to Goal, Newcastle have made an enquiry about Juventus central midfielder Aaron Ramsey, although talks remain informal at this stage.

The report claims that there are several clubs in the Premier League who are also interested in signing him, with his time in Italy seemingly coming to an end.

Upgrade on Almiron

Newcastle must push ahead and secure a deal for Ramsey as he could be a superb addition to the squad. Steve Bruce will surely want to improve his starting XI before the end of the window and this potential signing could do that.

Miguel Almiron started 16 Premier League games as either a central midfielder or attacking midfielder and managed two goals and zero assists whilst averaging a WhoScored rating of 6.61 in 12 of those starts in central midfield. This comes after he scored four and assisted two goals in his first 44 starts for the club in the league.

Ramsey, meanwhile, averaged a WhoScored rating of 6.87 in seven starts as a central midfielder and 7.00 as an attacking midfielder in four games for Juventus in the Serie A – scoring twice and assisting four goals in the league overall.

Whilst it is hard to compare the difference in quality between the Serie A and Premier League, Ramsey has also played in the latter. In his final two seasons for Arsenal, The Welshman provided 11 goals and 14 assists whilst averaging a WhoScored rating of 7.27 in 2017/18 and 6.70 in 2018/19 respectively.

Arsenal legend Martin Keown once lavished praise on the “outstanding technician” and highlighted his importance for the Gunners at the time.

He said:

“Playing in a deeper role, as he did under Arsene Wenger – I think that’s the best role for him. If you want Ozil and him in the same team. He’s so important to everything they do. It’s the energy – the box-to-box energy. He’s become an outstanding technician.”

This, along with the aforementioned statistics, suggest that the £187k-per-week maestro could be a better option than Almiron if Bruce wants to persist with a three-man midfield. Ramsey has shown that he can perform consistently to a higher standard than Almiron.

Therefore, Mike Ashley should work hard to get this deal over the line. Ramsey’s late runs into the box to score goals could add another weapon to Bruce’s spide and increase the chances of Newcastle avoiding a relegation battle next season.

Everton make Andreas Pereira loan offer

Everton have submitted a ‘loan proposal’ for Manchester United midfielder Andreas Pereira, according to Brazilian outlet TNT Sports.

The lowdown

After earlier spells in La Liga with Granada and Valencia, Pereira was loaned to Serie A outfit Lazio last season. He was limited to just three league starts, making a further 23 substitute appearances.

The Brazilian has racked up 75 career appearances for United and directly contributed to nine goals (scoring four and assisting five).

His versatility is a real asset: he’s predominantly played as an attacking midfielder but can also adopt a deeper role or operate on either flank.

The latest

Everton have made an offer for Pereira and it includes an option to buy at the end of the season.

That sets them apart from rival suitors like Flamengo, who are pursuing a straight loan.

Flamengo are also hopeful that United will agree to pay a portion of the Brazilian’s salary, which stands at £30,000 per week.

The verdict

It’s true that Everton don’t have much financial leeway this summer, and so loan moves may be their best chance to strengthen the squad in the remaining weeks of the window.

But does Pereira represent a significant upgrade on the options they already have? Probably not.

At best, he would be handy squad player given his capacity to play multiple positions. At worst, he would continue the trend of mediocre arrivals from the biggest clubs (see Alex Iwobi, Andre Gomes and Fabian Delph).

We feel this is one the Toffees would do well do avoid.

Village cricket, and dismissed by an idiot

Andrew Miller presents the plays of the first day of the third Test at Edgbaston

Slip of the day
And to think England’s progress in the first hour was positively serene. While Alastair Cook and Andrew Strauss were compiling their half-century opening stand, on a track offering no extravagant bounce or sideways movement, South Africa’s fielders were braced for a long hard slog of a day. But then, facing up to the irrepressible Andre Nel, Strauss hopped back into his crease to clip a single into the leg-side, and his back heel crashed into the base of middle stump. It was a freakish dismissal, but from that moment on, England’s insouciance vanished, and wasn’t to be seen again all day.Untimely failure of the day
Did he feather an edge or didn’t he? Nel – unsurprisingly – was in no doubt, even if the catcher, Mark Boucher, was less convinced. But no matter. The scoreboard declares that England’s embattled captain, Michael Vaughan, has made a first-ball duck to take his series tally to 23 runs from four innings. Vaughan is so used to trudging off in a slough of despond that it is hard to gauge his current emotions, though it’s fair to say he was unimpressed by this latest decision. The ball was angled in from wide of the crease, Vaughan prodded defensively with the air of a man still locating his off stump, and Aleem Dar did the rest.Bemused reaction of the day
Kevin Pietersen is not a man who accepts defeat readily, and today he was so unconvinced he’d been dismissed, he had to be given out twice before finally trudging from the crease. Jacques Kallis’s well-directed inswinger rapped the pad just outside the line of off stump before missing the inside-edge of Pietersen’s blade as he swished loosely through midwicket. The appeal went up for lbw, then moments later a second wave of excitement swept through the South African ranks as Ashwell Prince swooped at point to catch a ballooning deflection off the pad-flap. Pietersen by now had turned his back, and so missed the moment in which umpire Steve Davis raised his finger and gestured that he’d given the decision for the catch. Most cricketers might have got the message, but not KP.Send-off of the day
When asked on Monday what he made of Nel (and more specifically, his alter-ego, “Gunther”), Cook’s answer was pretty candid: “He’s an idiot,” he replied, and having studied both sides of Nel’s character during their time together at Essex, he was fairly well placed to provide an opinion. Sadly for Cook, his words came back to haunt him today. Despite top-scoring for England with a battling 76, the idiot had the last laugh with a rising delivery on off stump that held its line from round the wicket and was well caught by Kallis at second slip. Gunther’s reaction was apoplectically triumphant, as he dropped to one knee in front of his victim, punched the air and roared in red-faced delight. Such antics might attract the interest of the match referee, but it is unlikely to stop him from doing it over and over again in the future.Struggle of the day
Paul Collingwood’s return to international action was a torturous affair, and predictably unfulfilling. Creaking visibly as South Africa teased his loosely hanging outside edge, he needed 16 balls and 33 minutes to get off the mark, and though he escaped his duck with a sweetly struck drive, that was as good as his day got. Six balls later, Kallis bent a tight outswinger around the closed face of his bat, and while Collingwood was looking hopefully through midwicket, Graeme Smith was celebrating the simplest of catches at first slip. Collingwood wore the look of a man who knows the end is nigh as he traipsed back to the dressing-room. In ten first-class innings this season, he has accumulated a meagre 96 runs.Village performance of the day
The 77th and last over of England’s innings had it all. A slogged six, a near-decapitation, and two comically inept run-outs that might as well have been transplanted from the Crossbatters’ collapse against Bude Under-15s on their tour of Devon last summer. At the heart of it all was England’s favourite village blacksmith, Andrew Flintoff, who decided the time was nigh to hoick some quick runs. He duly belted Makhaya Ntini over midwicket then down the ground for 10 from two balls, whereupon Ntini decided to go around the wicket. The ploy did the trick, Flintoff found himself cramped for room and in the ensuing scramble, both his remaining partners were run out from consecutive balls.English crumb of comfort of the day
Flintoff’s face as he stalked off the pitch at the end of England’s innings was thunderous, so it was only a matter of time before Vaughan tossed him the ball with orders to tear onto the offensive. Sure enough, the moment came in the eighth over of South Africa’s reply. With Smith on strike, Flintoff’s first ball burst past his outside edge and through to the keeper, and the second took the edge and flew low to Strauss at second slip. Flintoff responded with a defiant roar as he arched his back so violently that he overbalanced and ended up on his backside. It rather ruined the moment, but symbolically it seemed apt for the day’s efforts.

Hatfield: Danny Ings could be one of the signings of the summer

Express and Star journalist Luke Hatfield believes that Danny Ings could be one of the signings of the summer.

The 29-year-old made the switch to Aston Villa from Southampton in a deal worth £25m and put pen to paper on a three-year contract at Villa Park [BBC Sport].

Ings was in incredible form in front of goal at St Mary’s, scoring 46 goals for the Saints in 100 games. The striker opened his account on his debut for Aston Villa in the club’s 3-2 defeat at Watford before scoring a spectacular acrobatic goal against Newcastle United.

The transfer came out of the blue, as Ings had been linked with moves elsewhere but Hatfield believes he could be one of the signings of the summer, telling Football FanCast: “He’s probably one of the most clinical strikers in the league. When you consider other players in his position, you put Harry Kane ahead of him but other than that, who would you put really ahead of him in terms of a clinical striker in that 18-yard box?

“He’s been that good and if he can replicate that at Villa, then he could well be one of the signings of the summer.

Villa have had a really good summer window, adding Leon Bailey, Axel Tuanzebe, Ashley Young, Emi Buendia and Danny Ings to their ranks and manager Dean Smith will be hoping that all his new signings gel as quickly as possible and Villa have another good season in the Premier League.

Everton transfer update on Rodriguez

Many Everton fans have been left fuming as a transfer update emerged on James Rodriguez.

Speaking on El Chiringuito TV, sports journalist Edu Aguirre has claimed that Rafa Benitez has told the Colombia international that he ‘doesn’t count on him’, and added that Rodriguez ‘wants to play’ and is ‘looking for a away out’.

The former Real Madrid star was such a key player for the Merseyside club in the 2020/21 term, scoring six goals and making a further nine assists in 26 games in total over all competitions (Transfermarkt).

His creativity in the final third of the pitch may be vital for their hopes of achieving European qualification next season, but it seems as if the 30-year-old may be forced out of the Toffees after just one campaign.

Thus, it is not a surprise at all to see so many Blues supporters fuming after hearing the news.

Newcastle transfer update on Jason Knight

Newcastle United are reportedly in a battle with another club in the Premier League to try and sign Jason Knight before the summer transfer window ends.

The Lowdown: Knight impresses

Despite a very disappointing 2020/21 season for Derby County, who barely survived relegation from the Championship, Knight had an impressive individual campaign.

Described as a ‘manager’s dream’ by Wayne Rooney back in January, the versatile player won six of his duels per game in the division and also averaged 1.5 tackles per match, scoring two goals (Sofascore).

The Latest: Knight monitored

As per The Irish Examiner, Knight is being monitored by both Newcastle and Burnley ahead of a potential move.

He has emerged as a target for the Tyneside club as Steve Bruce looks to strengthen his squad before the new season starts.

The Verdict: Sign

The Magpies simply need to get bodies in before the deadline given that they have one of the smallest squads in the Premier League, and Knight could prove to be a valuable player for them.

Given that he would be coming up from the Championship into the top flight, the Republic of Ireland international should not cost too much, and at 20 years of age, he still has a lot of potential while also being entrusted as Derby captain on a handful of occasions last term.

However, with the Clarets also interested in his signature, the Magpies need to act fast in order to get their man.

PCB warns Yousuf against ICL

Mohammad Yousuf, who is involved in arbitration proceedings with the ICL, faces a life ban if he joins the unofficial league, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has said. The , a Pakistan daily, quoted an unnamed PCB official as saying, “We have banned all our cricketers who joined the ICL and if Yousuf also plays for the unauthorised league then he will have to face the same punishment. Yousuf is still our best Test batsman and has a future with the Pakistan team, but not if he joins the ICL. It will be game over for him if he joined the rebel league.”Yousuf signed a contract with the ICL in the wake of his omission from Pakistan’s squad for the ICC World Twenty20 last year, but the PCB later convinced him to cancel his ICL contract and instead sign up for the IPL, a league approved by the national boards, as well as turn up for national duty.Subsequently the ICL had warned the various IPL franchises that they could face legal complications if they bought Yousuf in the player auctions. Yousuf was not bought by any of the IPL teams, but he was compensated by the league’s organisers, who gave him US$350,000 – his starting bid price.Pakistan’s selectors have continued to ignore Yousuf while picking Twenty20 teams, and he was left out of the provisional squad for the Canada Cup Four Nation 20/20 next month. “I just want to know what the selection procedure is,” Yousuf told the Urdu newspaper . “You go and ask great players like Wasim Akram and Inzamam-ul-Haq if I don’t deserve to play Twenty20 cricket. If they say I should be dropped then I will quit all cricket.”Yousuf felt his lack of agility on the field wasn’t enough reason for the selectors keep him out. “I just want to ask them ‘how many Jonty Rhodes are there in the Pakistan team?'” Yousuf will lead the Lahore Lions in Pakistan’s domestic Twenty20 tournament but said he has nothing to prove. “It’s not a test case for me,” he said. “After representing Pakistan for 11 years, I just want to make it clear that I am not playing to prove my abilities to anyone.”
