Oram helps New Zealand level series

Another embarrassment loomed for New Zealand after Syed Rasel ripped through their top order but Jacob Oram saved the day with a match-winning all-round performance. Bangladesh’s fans would have been preparing to celebrate their first major series triumph but they will now have to wait for the series decider on Tuesday. Man of the Match Oram, who nearly rescued his team with a half-century on Thursday, hit an unbeaten 62-ball 75 and bowled an economical spell to snuff out the hosts’ chances.Chasing 213, Bangladesh collapsed for 137, squandering the chance to record consecutive ODI wins against a Test-playing nation other than Zimbabwe. If Rasel’s 3 for 23 caused New Zealand to panic, Kyle Mills took two early wickets to get his team back into the contest. Those wickets were vital as they denied Bangladesh the composed start to their chase they enjoyed on Thursday. The remaining batsmen walked in under pressure and cracked at a time when runs were needed. It was an about-turn from the patient hard work that earned them a memorable victory in the first ODI. Even the duo of Mohammad Ashraful and Junaid Siddique, who had excelled on Thursday, failed to provide any sort of momentum and the asking-rate began to climb.New Zealand’s top order flopped once again after being put in, but fortunately for Daniel Vettori, his bowlers responded to challenge this time around. They bowled with control and the effort was complemented by the attacking fields Vettori set, which played a major hand in suffocating the batsmen.Bangladesh suffered an early loss in their chase. Mills stuck immediately with the second ball of the innings as he trapped Tamim Iqbal lbw with a delivery that pitched on the seam and cut in. A few overs later Mushfiqur Rahim was cleaned up by Mills’ pace. The responsibility fell on Ashraful and Siddique, with Bangladesh needing a good partnership.Unlike his run-a-ball innings on Thursday, Ashraful had to go on the defensive today. However, that decision to play sedately ultimately led to Bangladesh’s downfall. Ashraful hit his first boundary off the 47th delivery he faced, at a time when consistent scoring could have kept the asking rate from shooting up. When Tim Southee had Siddique caught at mid-off for 32 in the 27th over, Bangladesh had just 71 on the board. The remaining batsmen came with the required run-rate over six, and none stood up to a challenge as Bangladesh suffered a familiar collapse – Mashrafe Mortaza’s cameo only put off defeat by a few overs.New Zealand will count themselves lucky to win after Rasel’s early demolition of their top order. Sensing the need to take the upper hand, Ashraful asked the left-armer to complete his spell in one go and Rasel bowled a stump-to-stump line to put presssure on the tentative batsmen. Jesse Ryder showed signs of converting another good start, but he misread a slower one to give back an easy return catch to Rasel.Just as in the first game New Zealand lost the plot during the second Powerplay. Three wickets fell in the space of three runs. Bangladesh were no mood to retreat, but New Zealand found a counter-attacker in Oram. His patient half-century in the first ODI showed he had grasped the conditions in Mirpur well. Once again he steadily picked his team out of the woods. Pinching singles and hitting the odd boundary, Oram was happy as long as he could stretch the innings. At the 25-over mark, New Zealand were stuttering at 72 for 4. When Oram took guard the score read 86; by the end of the third Powerplay, which New Zealand smartly decided to take from the 44th over, they were 182 with one wicket in hand. In the final over, Oram finally broke the shackles and launched Abdur Razzak’s left-arm spin for 25 valuable runs, with three sixes and one four.On the way he took advantage of Bangladesh’s sloppiness. Oram was on 26 when a leading edge off Shahadat Hossain flew towards cover where Razzak failed to latch on cleanly after colliding with another fielder. New Zealand had another reprieve when Bangladesh didn’t appeal after Mortaza got a direct hit in from mid-on; replays suggested last man Jeetan Patel was out. The incident occurred on the first ball of the 47th over, and a potential target of 169 became 213. Had that appeal been made, perhaps the whole of Bangladesh might have been rejoicing at a series win.

Pearce expects Phillips to leave Liverpool

Liverpool centre-back Nat Phillips is still expected to leave Anfield in the summer transfer window, according to The Athletic’s James Pearce.

The Lowdown: Phillips down the pecking order

Phillips did an admirable job at an extremely difficult time last season – Jamie Redknapp hailed him as ‘unbelievable’ following his performance against Burnley in May – filling in when the Reds were without the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip through long-term injuries.

They are all fit again, however, and Ibrahima Konate has joined from RB Leipzig, so the 24-year-old is now arguably fifth-choice centre-back at Anfield.

Phillips has been linked with a summer exit, with West Ham and Bayer Leverkusen reportedly among those keen on signing him.

The Latest: Pearce tips defender to leave

Speaking in a Q&A for The Athletic after Liverpool’s win at Norwich City on Saturday, Pearce gave his thoughts on Phillips’ Reds future.

He outlined: “Still no suitable offers on the table. I’m still expecting him to leave before the window shuts.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/the-latest-liverpool-transfer-news-copy-4/” title=”The latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: No Liverpool future

It is hard to see Phillips enjoying much playing time for Liverpool this season, unless another injury crisis occurs at the back.

While he did excellently in 2020/21, making 15 Premier League starts, he has his limitations and probably isn’t good enough to be a long-term squad player at Anfield. On the ball, he doesn’t have the quality and vision of Van Dijk, Gomez and Matip, and his lack of pace means that Liverpool can’t play with their usual high line.

Therefore, it would come as no surprise if the club accept an offer for him this month, particularly with Klopp’s centre-back options now nicely replenished.

In other news, Pearce has also provided an update on another aspect of Liverpool’s transfer business. Read more here.

Sunderland: Fans react to Dennis Cirkin signing

Sunderland have completed a deal for Tottenham Hotspur left-back Dennis Cirkin on a three-year contract.

Enjoying a productive 2020/21 campaign, the Dublin-born left-back registered two assists in 14 appearances for the Spurs Under-23’s set up [Transfermarkt].

Now, he has made a surprise move to the North-East following recent developments.

Regarded as a coup for Lee Johnson’s men, highly-rated Cirkin joins Sunderland for an undisclosed fee and is rumoured to be ready to be involved in the Black Cats’ trip to Milton Keynes Dons this coming Saturday [Shields Gazette].

Positional counterpart Denver Hume’s future at Sunderland is now said to be unclear, owing to the move.

In light of this new signing, no wonder loads of Sunderland fans took to social media to voice their delight.

Gilchrist's comments were taken out of context – Tendulkar

Adam Gilchrist has told Sachin Tendulkar that his comments in the media were taken out of context

Adam Gilchrist has told Sachin Tendulkar that his comments questioning Tendulkar’s evidence in the Harbhajan Singh racism case had been taken out of context. Excerpts from Gilchrist’s new book, published in the , questioned Tendulkar’s sporting spirit and his role in the hearings into the alleged racist remark made by Harbhajan. In , Gilchrist suggested Tendulkar had changed his statement.”Gilchrist called me up and clarified this issue,” Tendulkar told news channel . “He said his comments have been taken out of context.” To another channel, , Tendulkar defended himself against Gilchrist’s remark that he was “hard to find for a changing-room handshake after we have beaten India”.”Before, during and after the match I don’t like to enter the opposition dressing-room as it is not my culture,” Tendulkar said. “But I have nothing against other cultures. I have never walked off a ground without shaking the opposition players’ hands.”Indian cricket officials have already criticised Gilchrist for questioning Tendulkar’s honesty. MV Sridhar, the Indian team manager on the tour, had added a twist to the saga by offering a different version to Gilchrist of what Tendulkar had said.”During the hearing in front of Mike Procter, the match referee, during the Sydney Test, Tendulkar told him that he had heard some form of abuse,” Sridhar told Cricinfo. “But Procter didn’t probe any further and left matters at that. But subsequently in front of Justice Hansen, when both parties were cross-examined by legal counsel, Tendulkar said that he had heard Harbhajan say but clarified that it was an abbreviated form of an abuse.”Sridhar was present at both hearings after the Test, first with Procter and then with Justice John Hansen. Sridhar questioned the timing of Gilchrist’s revelations and said he used the incident merely to get cheap publicity for his book.”It is absurd that he [Gilchrist] is speaking after almost a year after the incident,” he said. “It’s just a cheap marketing gimmick to sell the book. Why did he try to go public now because he realised the importance of the moment like the India-Australia series which has gained Ashes-like proportions?”He said he was surprised at how Symonds, who claimed he was racially abused by Harbhajan in Hindi, got away despite admitting that he was involved in a heated discussion with him. Symonds saw Harbhajan hitting Brett Lee on the backside so he stepped in and “had a bit of a crack at Harbhajan”, telling him exactly what he thought of his antics. Harbhajan was initially banned for three Tests but his punishment was overturned on appeal.BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla said the board would not pursue any action against Gilchrist. “I think it is better to ignore Gilchrist’s comments,” Shukla said. “The only one to lose respect will be him, not Tendulkar.”Niranjan Shah, the BCCI secretary at that time, felt Gilchrist only wanted to “sensationalise the incidents” to sell his book. “Everything was properly handled by the authorities with the appointment of proper men to conduct the hearing after a proper procedure was put in place. After the matter is over, to claim these things in the book is nothing but foolishness.”

Exclusive: Spurs legend claims one ace reminds him of Bale

Tottenham Hotspur legend Graham Roberts insists Ryan Sessegnon must take his game to the next level if he is to stay at the club.

The former Fulham star has endured a mixed start to his Spurs career following a £25m move in 2019.

Sessegnon was sent on loan to German club Hoffenheim last season and has made a total of 13 first-team appearances for Spurs at first-team level.

He has played once under new manager Nuno Espirito Santo, featuring in last week’s 1-0 Europa Conference League defeat to Pacos de Ferreira in Portugal.

Roberts believes that the 21-year-old too regularly takes the safe option when he is in possession of the ball but he thinks there is hope for him in the coming weeks and months.

Indeed, he sees similarities with Bale, who began his Spurs career as a left-back and was eventually moved forward into a left-wing position, where he became one of the best players in the world.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Roberts said: “He doesn’t take people on. Gareth Bale was like this when he first came.

“Sessegnon reminds me of Gareth Bale, just plays it simple, and then when Gareth Bale got moved forward like Sessegnon has, he started taking people on, scoring goals.

“Sessegnon has to go to that next level and if he doesn’t, then I can see him moving on.”

Luke Hatfield not expecting Wolves to swap Neves for Ramsey

Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield has rubbished claims that Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey could be heading to Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Ruben Neves heading in the opposite direction.

According to Italian media outlet Gazzetta dello Sport, the two clubs are in discussions over a potential swap deal just hours before the transfer window slams shut.

Juventus put former Arsenal midfielder Ramsey up for sale before the window even opened as injuries and a loss of form have resulted in him making just 66 appearances for the Italian giants.

The Wales international’s wages of £400,000-per-week have resulted in Juventus being willing to sell Ramsey for as little as £10million, according to TuttoJuve.

Neves, 24, has been linked with the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal during the transfer window but Wolves do not appear keen on letting the Portugal international leave Molineux.

Hatfield is not expecting Ramsey and Neves to trade clubs with the deadline getting closer.

He told Football FanCast: “Swap deals, in general, don’t happen too often because there are so many moving parts.

“You’ve got both clubs having to want either player, both players wanting moves to those clubs and then the wages and playing time have got to add up. It’s so hard to get a swap deal done nowadays.

“It wouldn’t shock me if you see Neves still at Wolves. Ramsey’s wages are a hard one to overcome.”

The buzz around the Kotla

Plays of the Day for the third day of the third Test between India and Australia in Delhi

Good morning Haydos
Just before play started, Matthew Hayden kept Zaheer Khan waiting. For two minutes, he gardened on the pitch, on the non-strikers’ end too, and then when Zaheer was getting ready to run in, Hayden squatted and made Zaheer wait again. Then he got what he asked for. A fired up Zaheer delivered a sharp, accurate bouncer which Hayden failed to negotiate and was hit in the helmet. A concerned Simon Katich walked up to his partner to check on him. Hayden hadn’t seen the last of it though as the third ball of the over, another bouncer, hit his shoulder.Angry young fielder
India didn’t start with Ishant Sharma today. One can’t be sure if that riled him up, but the moment he got an opportunity to have a shy at the stumps, he absolutely let it rip. Katich had played it straight to Ishant at mid-on, and dashed off for a single in a frenzied manner. Ishant took aim and broke the middle stump into two, shattering the stump camera in the process.Beeroz Shah Kotla
At least once each during their umpiring careers, Aleem Dar and Billy Bowden have officiated in matches where bees have attacked the field and held up play. It happened to Bowden in Vishakhapatnam, during the India-Pakistan one-dayer in 2005 and Dar faced it in Kandy, during the England-Sri Lanka Test in 2007-08. The bee attack seemed inevitable when the two united for the Kotla Test. This one was an assault like no other. For what seemed an eternity, the players lay on their tummies, waiting the bees to go away. As the players pondered whether to bee or not to bee, everybody had a good laugh. Ishant, fielding at the fine-leg boundary, was the only brave man standing. Sachin Tendulkar, covering his ears with his hat, sported a bee-tific smile, and Hayden rolled on the grass like a child. Bowden tried to be brave and started moving first, but the bees put him back in his place. Sourav Ganguly was, as expected, the last one to get up once the bees went away. All in all, what a bee-mer.Gettin’ jiggy with it
The IPL has not left the Kotla. Popular local music blares at every break in play, however small, and none of the players have taken a liking to it. Just after mid-day drinks, Virender Sehwag ran in to bowl to Hayden, but the music didn’t seem to stop. Hayden lost his concentration and had to pull out of the second delivery. He also did a little jig to suggest he may as well start dancing if the music didn’t stop. We can’t be sure whether the whole thing affected Bowden’s concentration, because Hayden was given lbw off the next ball to a delivery which may or may not have gone over the stumps.

West Ham: Benrahma can replace Lingard

Fresh from leading West Ham United into an unlikely spot in the Europa League, a year on from staring relegation in the face, manager David Moyes has a tricky task on his hands to repeat such a feat.

The 58-year-old has often been a mark of consistency in the Premier League, regularly recording top-eight finishes during his time at Everton, but this season looks tougher than ever.

A lot of teams around them, including the likes of Spurs and Arsenal who finished lower in the table, have strengthened their playing squad considerably, whilst the Irons have only made the one senior addition, a back-up loan goalkeeper in Alphonse Areola.

The likes of Declan Rice, Michail Antonio, Vladimir Coufal and Tomas Soucek will need to step up and perform at a similar output to last term, especially in the absence of Jesse Lingard, who arguably changed the Hammers’ fortunes for the better.

After joining on loan in January, the Manchester United outcast provided nine goals and five assists to end the year as their second-highest rated player, as per WhoScored, which only emphasises just how crucial he was to Moyes and their impressive sixth-place finish.

He seems rather unlikely to return to the London Stadium and that’s a big blow. It means that other players will have to step up – perhaps it’s Said Benrahma’s time to shine?

The nine-cap Algerian winger, signed in a £30m deal from Brentford, didn’t have the best debut campaign in the big time, registering only one goal and six assists but that’s warranted. It’s the first time he’s competed at such a level. And he only started 14 times in the Premier League.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-west-ham-news-transfer-rumours-the-latest-gossip-and-much-more-3” title= “Read the latest West Ham news, transfer rumours, gossip and much more!”]

If Moyes needs someone to provide that extra spark in midfield, then Benrahma must step forward. He could turn out to be the Hammers’ perfect Lingard replacement.

The 26-year-old has looked electric throughout pre-season, having scored against Celtic and Brentford, and provided two assists against Atalanta. He appears to be playing with a lot more confidence and his creativity could be utilised through the middle, to get the best out of him.

At the Bees, where he was described as someone who “could nutmeg a mermaid”, he delivered a direct goal contribution every 119.5 minutes, as per Transfermarkt, so it’s on Moyes to get that back out of him.

Also dubbed a “true magician” by former OGC Nice teammate Lorenzo Vinci, Benrahma can provide Moyes and West Ham with excitement by plugging the void left behind by Lingard.

The squad undoubtedly needs more additions to put up a fight across all competitions but the £18m-rated dynamo is someone who could be in line for a massive boost heading into the new campaign.

Moyes must look to unleash Benrahma in a free role in the absence of their former loan sensation.

AND in other news, Moyes risks West Ham transfer nightmare with a swoop for “ungrateful” £105k-p/w flop…
