Jamie How, the New Zealand opener, has said criticism over his selection for the Test series against West Indies did not bother him and despite low scores in Dunedin he felt he was in good form. After New Zealand’s 2-0 drubbing by Australia, the selectors made wholesale changes to the squad but How survived the axe that fell on batsmen Aaron Redmond, Grant Elliott, Peter Fulton and Gareth Hopkins.”There is always pressure when you’re playing for your country,” How told New Zealand’s . “And when you start letting media pressure affect you, that’s when you know you’re in trouble. We’ve got high standards as players and we’re our harshest critics.”It’s something you have to embrace and when you do succeed it makes it that much sweeter. I don’t think pressure is a bad thing.”How aggregated 58 from the two Tests against Australia but said it was his 170 in the tour game against New South Wales that gave him the confidence and belief that he was “only one innings away from that next big score”.How has not scored a century in his 17 Tests, including the latest against West Indies in which he aggregated 20. In his last ten Test innings – including four against Bangladesh – he has scored 146 runs at an average of 14.60.How said working with Andy Moles, New Zealand’s new coach who opened for Warwickshire for several seasons, has been helpful. “It’s good to get knowledge from a guy who opened the batting for so many years, to be able to talk to him about that specific position.”How said Moles’ entry into New Zealand cricket, which ended John Bracewell’s five-year tenure as coach, was a fresh start. “There is a fresh feeling within the team and the guys have been excited about playing at home again. It seems like an age since we have.”

Flintoff hopes security won't distract team

England landed in Chennai on Monday night and woke up to a wet Tuesday but allrounder Andrew Flintoff believes the real challenge will be the extra security they will receive. “The environment is going to be completely different when you talk about commandos and hotels being locked down,” he told the after the squad arrived from Abu Dhabi. “That is going to be a challenge for the lads. A few of us experienced something similar here in 2002 when we had guards everywhere, but hopefully that will wear off pretty quickly.”He believed normal service would resume once the first Test got underway on Thursday. “Once you’re out in the middle bowling at Sachin Tendulkar or trying to hit Harbhajan Singh around, I don’t think you’ll be worrying about who might be around off the ground. I think that will happen more when you’re at the hotel or mooching around.”The team have made the decision to go and play cricket in India and we want to give a good account of ourselves. These circumstances might make the team tighter and hopefully this can be reflected in the results.”According to the Joint Commissioner of Chennai Police, P Balasubramaniam, England’s stay in the city will be conducted behind a security blanket of more than 5000 personnel. A squad of 300 commandos will be at the hotel and 1000 police at the outer periphery of the hotel. Heavy security will also be in place all along the route to the stadium, and 2000 police personnel will be in attendance at the venue itself.Flintoff, along with Steve Harmison, was initially apprehensive of returning to the subcontinent to complete the tour. Apart from the series missing a competitive edge, personal safety and family concerns had also weighed on Flintoff’s mind.”That was one of the things I had to get right in my mind as well,” said Flintoff. “The one thing about me is that I have to be able to try my best when I get on a cricket field. So I had to be sure I could give my all. I took time to ring family and think it over myself. It was just a case of digesting it and getting it straight in my mind. We needed to know how the tour was going to take place and, once that was presented to us, we could then decide.”There was safety to consider and also whether it was right to be playing in India so soon after Mumbai. I can’t vouch for other players but for me the IPL didn’t come into it at all. Safety is far bigger than the IPL.”However, the team decision to return and the prospect of missing cricket made him rethink. “One of the reasons I decided to go was for my team-mates. We didn’t want to get into the position where the team was split up. Even though we got beaten during the one-day series against India, the spirit in the camp was really good and that’s something we don’t want to lose. So unity has played a major part.”

Forest dealt Max Lowe transfer blow

Nottingham Forest have been dealt a major blow in their bid to bring Max Lowe to the City Ground this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Football League World, who claim that Dane Murphy’s side have seen an offer of a season-long loan for the left-back turned down by Sheffield United.

The report goes on to state that both Reading and Swansea City are also believed to be interested in the defender, while it is unclear whether Forest will continue their pursuit of the 24-year-old following their failed approach.

Murphy must move

With there having been something of a defence overhaul at Nottingham Forest this summer, with all of Yuri Ribeiro, Nikolas Ioannou, Michael Dawson and Michael Hefele having departed the club, while it is also clear that there is no real future for either Carl Jenkinson or Gaetan Bong in Nottingham, Chris Hughton has been left rather short in a number of positions across his backline.

However, it is undoubtedly at left-back where the 62-year-old lacks the most depth, with the former Norwich City manager having to recall Bong from his exile in order to field a player in the position so far this season.

As such, it would certainly appear as if the position is somewhere Murphy must strengthen prior to the closure of the summer transfer window next Tuesday, with Lowe appearing to be a fantastic candidate for the club.

Indeed, while the former England U20 international failed to cement a place in the Sheffield United starting XI last season, making just eight appearances in the competition, the left-back nevertheless proved in the campaign prior he is an extremely capable option in the Championship.

Indeed, over his 29 second-tier appearances for Derby County back in 2019/20, the £2.7m-rated man helped his side keep three clean sheets, as well as making an average of 1.6 interceptions, 3.7 tackles, 1.6 clearances and winning a whopping 6.9 duels per game.

These returns saw the man Alan Biggs dubbed a “proven Championship performer” earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.83, earning the £14k-per-week defender a £3.47m move to the then-Premier League side Sheffield United.

So, the signing of Lowe would not only have plugged a gap that needs filling for Hughton, his addition would also more than likely have helped to raise the overall level of defending in the Forest backline, something that is desperately needed at the City Ground at present – leading us to believe Murphy should indeed do all he can to secure a deal for the left-back over what remains of the summer transfer window.

Liverpool linked with move for Pedri

The summer transfer window may only have closed just over a week ago, but Liverpool are already being linked with a host of exciting players.

What’s the story?

According to Spanish reporter Eduardo Inda (as relayed by the Anfield Edition), the Reds are keen to secure the 18-year-old wonderkid’s services after failing to replace Gini Wijnaldum.

They tweeted: “Liverpool are interested in signing Barcelona midfielder Pedri next summer, with Jurgen Klopp ‘in love’ with the 18-year-old. The club are willing to pay €100m (£86m) for his services, which would smash the club’s previous transfer record.”

Liverpool fans will be buzzing

The teenage prodigy joined Barca in an £18m move back in 2019 but stayed on at his boyhood club Las Palmas for another season.

After joining up with Ronaldo Koeman’s men 12 months ago, Pedri has instantly established himself as one of the club’s star performers.

Despite his tender years, the Spain international made an astonishing 52 appearances in all competitions for the Camp Nou outfit last season, bagging four goals and providing six assists along the way.

His impressive displays earned him a spot in Luis Enriques’s 24-man squad for Euro 2020, and his outstanding performances on the international stage draw praise from former Juventus, Real Madrid and England boss Fabio Capello.

“I am very happy for him (Enrique),” he told Spanish outlet Marca (as relayed by the Daily Mail). “Spain have played very, very well, and overall, he has realised the base for the next tournaments.””He has built a very young national team with a big future, where, for certain, includes the revelation of the tournament: Pedri. He is simply a spectacular footballer.”Therefore, Liverpool supporters will surely be buzzing to learn of their club’s reported interest in the technically gifted midfielder.

Klopp and his coaching staff are thought to be hopeful that the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and Harvey Elliott can step up this season in Wijnaldum’s absence, although only time will tell if they prove to be capable of doing just that.

Pedri, on the other hand, has showcased truly world-class potential in his short professional career, and the Liverpool manager and fans alike would undoubtedly welcome his arrival with open arms.

Newcastle transfer update on Kamara

A reason has now been given why Newcastle United’s Deadline Day offer for Boubacar Kamara was rejected.

The Lowdown: Late offer

As per Le Phoceen, the St. James’ Park faithful made a last-minute offer to try and sign the Marseille ace on Transfer Deadline Day.

However, he would have been ‘extremely hesitant’ to have made the move to the North East.

The Latest: Deal off

As per The Athletic, Kamara decided that he wanted to stay at Marseille in the end, despite offers from both Wolves as well as the Tyneside club.

The Ligue 1 team had hoped to move him on given that he only has a year left on his current deal, and now it is anticipated that he will either sign a new contract or leave on a free transfer in 2022.

The Verdict: Shame

It is a shame that a move for Kamara to Steve Bruce’s side eventually fell through.

Once dubbed a ‘phenomenon’ by his former teammate Rolando back in May 2020, the Frenchman still has a lot of potential at just 21 years of age, and his ability to be equally as comfortable at centre-back as well as in defensive midfield (Transfermarkt) would have been a valuable asset to have in the squad.

Nonetheless, the Magpies only managed to bring in one player on a permanent deal in Joe Willock from Arsenal, and given that he was on loan there last season, fans have every right to be worried about the lack of improvement from last term.

Robin Koch ruled out of Leeds-Burnley clash

Robin Koch has been ruled out of Leeds United’s Premier League clash with Burnley this weekend, according to journalist Phil Hay.

The Lowdown: Leeds face Burnley meeting

The Whites have made an up-and-down start to their 2021/22 season, with a heavy defeat away to Manchester United followed up by an exciting 2-2 draw at home to Everton.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side then dispatched of Crewe Alexandra in the EFL Cup in midweek, prior to Sunday’s trip to Burnley in the league.

Leeds will be hoping for a repeat of last season’s 4-0 win at Turf Moor, in which Rodrigo scored a brace for the visitors.

The Latest: Koch out of clash

One player who won’t be available for the game because of injury is Koch, however, with The Athletic‘s Hay delivering a 10-word verdict on Twitter on Friday:

“No Robin Koch again this weekend, still recovering from injury.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-14/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Manageable

In truth, Koch has struggled to find his best form so far this season, so his absence may not be considered the end of the world for Leeds.

The 25-year-old was off the pace in midfield in the aforementioned 5-1 drubbing at the hands of the Red Devils and he may not have been included in Sunday’s starting lineup anyway.

The hope is that Koch returns refreshed when he overcomes his injury, though, with the German undoubtedly a key squad member with his absence a hit to Bielsa’s squad depth.

BCCI plans corporate tournaments

The BCCI plans an annual inter-corporate tournament, covering both 50- and 20-over formats, with the winners getting Rs 1 crore (approx US$200,000). This proposal, by the board’s working committee, will mark a new area of the BCCI’s interest.A statement after a working committee meeting on Saturday said the tournament was aimed at increasing employment opportunities for players. Other prizes include Rs 50 lakh for the runners-ups and Rs 25 lakhs for the losing semi-finalists.The board also announced an expected decrease in revenues of Rs 120 crore [approximately US$25 million] for the current year in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, with the cancellation of two ODIs against England, and India’s tour of Pakistan. The amount includes the loss of revenue arising out of the postponement of the ICC Champions Trophy 2008. “While there will be a decrease in revenue, the BCCI will still have a healthy excess of income over expenditure for the current year,” the release clarified. The committee also finalised specialised coaching centres: for fast bowlers at Punjab Cricket Association’s Cricket Academy, for spinners at the Tamil Nadu Cricket association’s Cricket Academy and for batsmen at the Mumbai Cricket Association’s Cricket Academy. The BCCI has urged its members to increase the number of grounds available for junior cricket, as well as improve the quality of pitches. Reports from the various sub-committees were also approved at the working committee meet.
