Leeds must let Helder Costa go next summer

While Leeds United did manage to secure the arrivals of players such as Daniel James, Junior Firpo and Kristoffer Klaesson in the recently closed transfer window, as well as making Jack Harrison’s loan deal a permanent move, there was plenty more outgoing activity than incoming business for the Whites this summer.

Indeed, all six of Barry Douglas, Ezgjan Alioski, Ouasim Bouy, Pablo Hernandez, Jordan Stevens and Robbie Gotts left Elland Road on free transfers, while Victor Orta also sanctioned the temporary departures of five players on loan deals.

One of the latter group was Helder Costa, with the 27-year-old winger being sent to Valencia following the deadline day arrival of Manchester United forward James.

And, with the Portugal international’s current contract with Leeds United set to expire at the end of the season, Costa should well have played his last game for the Premier League side.

Get rid

While it would be slightly harsh to say that Helder Costa did not contribute anything to Marcelo Bielsa’s side during his time at Elland Road, it is nevertheless clear that the winger is simply not of the standard required to be a part of the Argentine’s first-team squad.

While the £9m-rated man did score four goals, provide four assists and create five big chances over his 43 Championship appearances in the Whites’ promotion-winning campaign back in 2019/20, you would be hard-pressed to find a Leeds fan who now believes that the £15.93m fee their club paid to subsequently sign the forward was money well spent.

Indeed, over his 22 Premier League appearances for Bielsa’s side last season, only 13 of which came as starts, Costa earned a quite frankly diabolical seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.46, ranking him as Leeds’ second-worst performer in the top flight of English football – ahead of only young defender Leif Davis.

As such, it would seem highly advisable for United to allow the £36k-per-week forward to move onto pastures upon his return from Valencia at the end of the season, as Costa has very much been stealing a living at Leeds for the past year.

Referrals have improved decision-making – Lorgat

ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat believes the referral system has improved and has helped considerably in making correct decisions. “The referral system has improved the rate of giving correct decisions,” he said

ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat believes the referral system has helped considerably in reaching correct on-field decisions. “The referral system has improved the rate of giving correct decisions,” he said. “The idea is to give [the umpires] sufficient help to get the decisions correct. We have seen that the percentage of the correct decisions has gone up from 94% to 98% with this system in place.”A final decision, he said, would be arrived at soon. “The ICC’s cricket committee will decide on the matter in May and put forward its proposal to the executive board in June.”The system, first trialled internationally on India’s tour of Sri Lanka in July-August last year, was also tried out in the two-Test series between New Zealand and West Indies in December.A slight modification was introduced for the current series between West indies and England, with the number of referrals per team in each innings reduced from three to two. Depending on the success, it may stay that way for the South Africa-Australia series later this month. The system has not been without its fair share of criticism, though. Sachin Tendulkar, who was part of the India team when on that Sri Lanka tour, recently said he was not impressed with it. “There is still an element of uncertainty in the system,” he said. “I still prefer the Hot Spot system to identify the contact between the ball and bat.”

Man United set to sell James to Leeds

An update has emerged on Manchester United winger Dan James, regarding Leeds’ interest in signing him before the deadline.

What’s the talk?

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Whites are in advanced talks over the signing of the United winger on a permanent deal.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side are now discussing personal terms with the forward ahead of officially completing the move before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

Delight

United fans will surely be delighted with this news as it means that the club are set to receive a transfer fee for James that could go a long way to paying for Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to the club. The Red Devils have agreed a €23m (£19.7m) deal to sign the Portuguese international.

Dan James joined United for a reported fee of £15m from Swansea and is currently rated at £16.2m by Transfermarkt. Romano does not mention how much Leeds are set to pay for the forward, but if it is within the region of £15-16m then that could pay for the bulk of Ronaldo’s transfer fee – which could delight United fans as it is exceptional business on paper.

You only have to look at their respective league stats to see the difference in quality between the pair. James managed three goals and one assist in 15 Premier League matches, averaging a WhoScored rating of 6.61 for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, scored 29 goals and provided three assists in 33 Serie A appearances for Juventus, averaging a WhoScored rating of 7.61. Despite being 36, the ex-Real Madrid attacker still enjoyed a sensational season with the Italian side, scoring goals at a superb rate, whereas James struggled to find consistency for United.

The club are now on the verge of potentially selling James for almost as much, or more depending on the final figures that are yet to be reported, as they have agreed to pay for Ronaldo. Of course, this does not take wages into account, but it is still great reading for United fans all the same and represents a shrewd piece of business by the club on and off the pitch.

In a year where their owners have been protested against in such stern fashion, they should be pleased that they’re finally beginning to get things right.

Now, they can now look forward to Ronaldo potentially making his second debut for the club knowing that James’ prospective sale may well help pay for the signing.

Celtic: Source shares Odsonne Edouard fee

Celtic could actually pocket up to £20m in the deal that took Odsonne Edouard to Crystal Palace on deadline day, according to Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Sky Sports claim

Edouard finally sealed a Parkhead exit he has been working on since April with hours remaining of the window, signing a four-year deal at Selhurst Park.

The Hoops brought in a striker of their own in Georgios Giakoumakis from VVV-Venlo.

Sky Sports claimed that a transfer for Edouard cost Patrick Vieira’s side an initial £14m that could rise to £18.5m. However, it seems as if it could be more than that, which is good news for Dominic McKay and Ange Postecoglou.

The Latest: Source shares Wednesday update

Football Insider shared a story on Wednesday after being informed by a Celtic source.

They suggested that a move for Edouard has actually cost Palace £15m which could end up totalling £20m with various add-ons.

The report adds that Celtic will now have to hand Paris Saint-Germain 30% of profits made on Edouard.

The Verdict: A good window

Celtic have brought in 12 summer signings and have come out with a profit, as per Transfermarkt.

The site suggests that the Hoops have forked out just over £20m on incomings and have received £31.59m in departures over recent months.

It seems as if that figure could well rise in the future with add-ons for Edouard, so overall, it appears to have been a productive window for McKay and co, rebuilding a squad in desperate need of a freshen-up with money to spare.

In other news: Deadline day activity away from Celtic means two of McKay’s signings cost effectively nothing.

Aston Villa suffer injury blow over Morgan Sanson

The Birmingham Mail’s Ashley Preece has delivered a huge blow to Aston Villa after confirming Morgan Sanson’s hamstring injury in the Carabao Cup clash against Chelsea on Wednesday night.

What’s the story?

The Frenchman has yet to play in the Premier League this season due to injury, and after looking like he’d finally made his comeback against the Blues in midweek, he went down with what looked like a hamstring problem.

And, writing on Twitter, Preece said: “Gutted for Sanson, he’s upset as he clutches his hamstring as the Frenchman gestures to Dean Smith that he may not be able to continue. Chukwuemeka now getting warmed up; MacPhee stops him beforehand to talk the 17-year-old through his set-piece positions.

Then, in a follow-up tweet, he added: “Devastating for Sanson, that. He screamed in pure frustration just prior to coming off. He started really well in there and looked confident. Looks like a hamstring injury. 17-year-old Carney Chukwuemeka’s on to play against Kante and Saul now.”

Dean Smith will be guttedHaving seen him arrive back in the January transfer window, it’s unbelievable that to this day, Sanson has still only played ten times for Villa since his move from Ligue 1 side Marseille. The fact he only just made his return from injury to take the field against Chelsea in mid-week, is a real indication of just how badly he has struggled for form and fitness at Villa Park. With Smith’s side failing to sign a new central midfielder in the summer transfer window – the club were of course linked with a move for Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse – Sanson would surely have seen this season as the one to really make his mark.Instead, just when he probably thought he could force his way back into Smith’s plans and really find his match fitness again, he’s been hit with a major injury again. It’s sure to leave the Villa boss gutted at once again being without one of his marquee signings from this year.Meanwhile, Aston Villa have another exciting academy starlet in this teenager…

England seek tonic after draining defeat

Chennai may well be remembered as the Test match in which there were no losers, but try convincing England’s cricketers of that fact as they traipse northwards to Mohali

Chennai may well be remembered as the Test match in which there were no losers, but try convincing England’s cricketers of that fact as they traipse northwards to Mohali to start their campaign from scratch. For three days and two sessions, they held the upper hand over India, only for that ascendancy to be ripped from their grasp on a manic fourth evening. Virender Sehwag’s irresistible volley of boundaries paved the way for Sachin Tendulkar’s inexorable march to victory, as he and Yuvraj Singh added 165 unbeaten runs for the fifth wicket to coast home in front of an adulatory crowd. What now, then, for England? Chennai was the scene of some extravagant personal performances from their cricketers – most notably the twin-centurion, Andrew Strauss – but they have emerged with nothing to show for their efforts save a significant amount of mental bruising. The scars in some cases are physical as well – the captain, Kevin Pietersen, played the first Test with a cracked rib, while Steve Harmison was receiving ongoing treatment for a knee niggle. It took an awful lot of soul-searching for England to make the return trip to India, to pick themselves up twice in a fortnight would be remarkable.India, on the other hand, will saunter into Mohali with the confidence of a team that now believes that anything is possible. Tendulkar’s 41st century is already being regarded as the crowning glory of his matchless career, while Yuvraj’s unbeaten 85 could yet prove to be a watershed innings. Zaheer Khan once again demonstrated that he is the world’s pre-eminent exponent of reverse swing, and Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s cool marshalling of his players in a tensely-fought contest was another feather in his cap. Down in Perth, Australia and South Africa are supposedly competing for the right to be regarded as the world’s best Test team, but many would argue that accolade has already been claimed elsewhere.Form guide (last 5 Tests, most recent last)India DWDWW
England DLLWLWatch out forIt’s hard to imagine quite what he could come up with for an encore, but Virender Sehwag’s abilities are so astounding that England’s bowlers would be forgiven for freezing every time he settles into his stance. James Anderson and Steve Harmison suffered badly at his hands in the one-day series, and on that pivotal fourth evening they were brutalised once again, to the tune of 83 runs from 68 deliveries. His onslaught broke the back of an insurmountable run-chase, and opened the door to history.Who could ever have imagined that Rahul Dravid would be considered the weak link in an Indian batting line-up? England have been subjected to more than their fair share of Dravid masterclasses down the years, so the likes of Flintoff and Harmison will scarcely recognise the shuffling, diffident figure currently in their midst. Speed of scoring has never been his forte, but now that his legendary powers of adhesion have been eroded as well, his presence at the crease has a duel effect of slowing momentum and inviting hope of an imminent breakthrough. His old ally Tendulkar believes it is merely a blip, but with his 36th birthday approaching, and almost three years having passed since his last great contribution, in the Caribbean in 2006, Dravid’s sands of time are running decidedly low.Mind you, Dravid may be able to take some comfort from the remarkable resurgence of Andrew Strauss, whose twin scores of 123 and 108 deserved to have set England up for a famous victory in Chennai. Not since his career zenith, his debut season of 2004, has Strauss looked so compact, confident and indomitable at the crease. No longer did he feel the urge to chase the game with rash swishes outside off – instead he left with enervating composure, and demanded that the bowlers come to him in a bid to get him out. Every time they did, he tucked them off the hip for more runs. It was not designed to be pretty, but it was astoundingly effective. What is to be done with Monty Panesar? He wasn’t the only high-profile spinner to perform below expectations at Chennai – Harbhajan Singh was equally anonymous for long periods – but there was a sickening inevitability in the way he was muscled out of the zone in that final fourth innings. As Shane Warne said last week, Monty has basically been playing the same 33 Tests for his entire career, which means the lack of variety in his bowling is common knowledge to all his opponents. Graeme Swann, a fellow fingerspinner, extracted far greater purchase from the wicket throughout the game, and was trusted far more readily by Pietersen in the closing stages.Team newsDespite Dravid’s form worries, India are not expected to dispense with the services of their former captain just yet, which means an unchanged side is likely to take the field in Mohali.India : (probable) 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Virender Sehwag, 3 Rahul Dravid, 4 Sachin Tendulkar, 5 VVS Laxman, 6 Yuvraj Singh, 7 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt/wk), 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Amit Mishra.England, on the other hand, have some thinking to do and won’t announce their XI until right before the start. The likely return to fitness of Stuart Broad means his inclusion is inevitable, not least to add an extra dimension to the lower-order batting. Who should miss out is a toss-up – Anderson and Harmison both produced curate’s egg performances, though Harmison, one suspects, remains the likelier man to star on what is traditionally one of India’s bouncier surfaces. Higher up the order, the time is nigh for Ian Bell to be withdrawn from the firing line, temporarily at least. If Owais Shah doesn’t play in this Test, he might as well give up on ever adding to his two caps.England: (possible) 1 Andrew Strauss, 2 Alastair Cook, 3 Owais Shah, 4 Kevin Pietersen (capt), Paul Collingwood, 6 Andrew Flintoff, 7 Matt Prior (wk), 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Steve Harmison, 11 Monty PanesarPitch and conditionsHaving taken over from Mumbai as the venue for the second Test, Mohali might not have envisaged hosting two Test matches in the space of two months but that is unlikely to faze the curator, Daljit Singh, whose pitches are universally recognised as some of the best in the country. He said he had prepared a “result-oriented” pitch and expected to aid reverse-swing. “If all five days of play are possible then an outcome is sure.” Daljit said. “After two days some cracks will develop on the pitch, which will benefit spinners. Weather will be the key because the low temperature will make the ball swing and evening fog will make it difficult for batsmen to see the ball.”India certainly enjoyed their last visit, against Australia in October. Batting first they racked up a hefty 469, then went on to bowl the Aussies out for less than 200 on the final day. The monsoon rains that threatened Chennai certainly won’t come into play, although there might be the odd dose of winter fog to contend with.Stats and TriviaIf England need inspiration as they attempt to level the series at the last gasp, they need only rewind three years to their last tour in 2005-06. On that occasion, they came from behind to win the third Test in Mumbai by 212 runs.Mohali is the only venue to have hosted Tests on each of England’s last three visits to India. Ominously, in 2001-02, India won by ten wickets, and by nine wickets in 2005-06.Despite its reputation as a seamer-friendly venue, spin was India’s most significant weapon in each of those matches, particularly in the first innings. Harbhajan in 2001-02 and Anil Kumble four years later both claimed five-wicket hauls.Quotes”The lads are up for it and are raring to go. I thought the day after the Test would be a quiet day but the boys are fine, the boys are really focused now on doing what they can and not focusing on what’s happened in the past.”
“In no way am I trying to say that this will make everyone forget what happened in Mumbai. But I’d like to thank England for coming back to play Test cricket. We’ve witnessed a wonderful match. People are again enjoying cricket the way it’s meant to be.”
“Although India takes the plaudits for winning the match, thanks and congratulations are also due to Kevin Pietersen and his team who played so well while under enormous pressure from forces over which they could exert no control. I was very impressed with their attitude and today I can say I am especially proud to be involved in this great game.”

Liverpool linked to Carlos Soler

Liverpool have been linked with a move for Valencia midfielder Carlos Soler, despite the summer transfer window only closing a matter of days ago.

What’s the story?

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, the Reds are interested in securing the highly-rated 24-year-old’s services over the coming months.

The report states that Soler could be available for a relatively low price due to his current contract expiring in 2023, something that has reportedly attracted Jurgen Klopp to the versatile Spanish international.

Liverpool could finally replace Philippe Coutinho

Despite his tender years, Soler has become the leader of Valencia in recent times following the departure of several experienced players due to the club’s financial troubles.

The £36m-rated magician has made 188 appearances for his boyhood club to date, with his impressive performances catching the eye of several impressed onlookers.

One scout report lauded Soler’s skilful natural ability along with other attributes such as his ‘smart positioning, good dribbling and ability to combine in a tight space.’

And after bagging 26 goals and providing a further 26 assists throughout his Valencia career, it’s easy to understand why Klopp has identified him as a prime target for future windows.

His tacical versatility is one of Soler’s biggest strengths and could see him become the man to replace the creative void left by Philippe Coutinho’s exit, should he make the move to Anfield.

Comfortable in multiple roles within the engine room, including as a holding or attacking midfielder as well as a box-to-box dynamo, Soler has also been fielded on either flank and brings an unrivalled work rate to each position.

As a technically gifted maestro with an eye for a pass, great long-range shooting and specialising in set-piece’s, the similarities between the Valencia ace and Coutinho are apparent.

Soler’s blistering start to the new campaign has seen him bag three goals in his first three La Liga appearances as well as notching up two goals in his first two outings for the Spanish national team.

His outstanding form could earn him a move to Anfield either this season or next and Klopp’s charges would surely be strengthened by his arrival.

This is a move that The Reds should definitely be pursuing.

And, in other news…Ian Doyle drops exciting Liverpool update that’ll leave Reds fans absolutely buzzing

Dominic Thornely and his New South Wales team-mates piled on the runs during a massive first innings of 4 for 521 declared before squeezing five wickets from Tasmania in their unconvincing reply. Nathan Hauritz, the Test offspinner, struck three important blows to remind the selectors of his form as the visitors finished the day on 147, still 224 runs behind the follow-on mark. After Jason Krejza managed 1 for 153 in New South Wales’ innings, Hauritz (3 for 46) turned up to remove Jonathan Wells for 4 in his first over and added Rhett Lockyear (52) and George Bailey (23) to improve his side’s position. Dan Marsh’s second-ball dismissal to Burt Cockley was part of a mini-collapse of 3 for 9 and Luke Butterworth and Tim Paine ensured there was no further loss.Simon Katich, who is playing his final state match of the season due to his international commitments, swept to 143 off 150 balls in an innings that included six sixes. He started the second day wanting to build quickly towards a declaration and the closure came at lunch after Dominic Thornely had picked up 110 not out.Thornely’s century followed the hundred of Phillip Hughes on Friday, while Ben Rohrer was unbeaten on 53. Tasmania tried eight bowlers but none could take more than a wicket.<BR clear="all"
