Yorkshire seek to wear down Magoffin

ScorecardSteve Magoffin commanded respect from Yorkshire•Getty Images

From Ranjitsinhji to Mushtaq Ahmed, Sussex supporters have long been blessed by exotic overseas signings. Set against these, Steve Magoffin is a rather less alluring name. But he might just be the most valuable overseas player on the county circuit today. There is nothing demonstrative about him. Magoffin eschews histrionics and bounds in, harassing the off stump at a pace that is sprightly rather than express. But there is a wonderful rhythm to his bowling. Rangy and with a strong repeatable action, Magoffin’s energy is unrelenting even deep into his 35th year. He is still able to extract dangerous lift from wickets as docile as this Arundel track.Magoffin has enjoyed many triumphant days in his three seasons at Sussex, as his outstanding club record – 157 first-class wickets at 20 apiece – is testament to. “He’s as good as anybody there is that does what he does,” Sussex’s coach Mark Robinson says. “We wouldn’t swap him for anyone.”Though he snared only two wickets, few days will provide more emphatic affirmation of Magoffin’s worth.Only the wickets column betrayed him. For consistently defeating groping bats, he deserved plenty more than the two scalps – Alex Lees trapped lbw, and Adam Lyth well caught by Jon Lewis after misjudging a hook – he was restricted to.The absence of more wickets owed much to Yorkshire’s approach. In the absence of Chris Jordan, who may well be detained by England for almost the entirety of the summer, they recognised that Magoffin provided Sussex’s main threat. At times, it felt almost as if two games were being played out simultaneously: Yorkshire against Magoffin, in which maidens came more freely than runs; and Yorkshire against everyone else, when it looked rather more fun to be a batsman.Accord Magoffin respect -that 13 of his 23 overs were maidens shows that Yorkshire emphatically did so. The batsmen reckoned that runs would flow more freely elsewhere.New Zealand’s Test series in the Caribbean has deprived Yorkshire of their regular number three, Kane Williamson. In his absence, Jack Leaning showed the fortitude to excel in the role. Upright in defence, he also displayed the range of shots evident in the best keepers of number three. When Magoffin was given a break in the early afternoon, Yorkshire had reached only 61 for 1 from 33 overs: especially with the sun resplendent, spectators could have been forgiven for having a quiet siesta. Leaning recognised the opportunity to shake his side out of their torpor, hitting four exquisite boundaries – drives through midwicket and extra cover off James Tredwell, and a late cut and pull off Jon Lewis – in six balls. By the close he had reached 75, sailing past his previous highest first-class score, with the promise of more to come tomorrow. He found a fine ally in Lyth, with aggressive running a hallmark of their second wicket stand. Compact and particularly strong off the backfoot, Lyth may have aspirations of pinching Sam Robson’s Test place: his 66 takes his Division One tally for 2014 to 733 runs at 56 apiece. The most eye-catching moments of Lyth’s innings were a pair of sixes, both nonchalantly lofted down the ground, off Tredwell. But Tredwell could still be content with his first bowl in a Sussex shirt: he bowled with good flight and control, and, after having Andrew Gale dropped behind on nought, had the thrill of uprooting his leg stump as he attempted a sweep. After 29 worthy overs, plenty more beckon tomorrow, as Yorkshire look to inflict stress on Sussex’s flaky batting in the game’s third innings.

Carberry's comments 'unnecessary' – Giles

Ashley Giles, the former England limited-overs coach, has admitted he was disappointed with the comments Michael Carberry made earlier this year about his exclusion from England’s limited-overs side

Giles irritated by ‘unnecessary’ Carberry comments. Watch the full #politeenquiries here

Michael Carberry did not take his chance in the England one-day side with both hands•AFPAshley Giles, the former England limited-overs coach, has admitted he was disappointed with the comments Michael Carberry made earlier this year about his exclusion from England’s T20 and ODI sides and has clarified what he told the batsman during the Australia tour.Following the Ashes, during which Carberry had played all five Tests, he could not find a spot in the limited-overs matches against Australia and was dropped for the tour of West Indies and World T20.In an interview with the in March, Carberry said that when he approached Giles towards the end of the one-day series in Australia to find out why he was not playing – having been part of the side at the end of 2013 English season – Giles responded with “I don’t know.”Speaking on ESPNcricinfo’s #politeenquiries series, Giles acknowledged he had used those words but in relation to a question from Carberry about whether he would play for England again.”I did [say it] but it’s all in context. At the top of the order we had Cook and Bell, at No. 3 with tried different things – we had Stokes and Trott before that – so the ‘I don’t know’ was more that I cannot guarantee anyone a place in a one-day or T20 side. If I had, that would have been wrong.”In the , Carberry had said: “I sat there game after game, watching us lose, thinking: ‘What more can I do to get in the squad?’ – bearing in mind that I was without doubt the leading batsman in one-day cricket last year… to suddenly be on the sidelines, not getting a game, just didn’t make any sense.””I had a brief chat with Ashley during the fifth ODI in Adelaide. His response was that he didn’t really know. If you don’t know mate, I sure as hell won’t know.”Leaving Adelaide after our brief chat I’ve got to be honest, it didn’t fill me with a great deal of optimism. I feel that this is a question he should have answered. And, okay, if it’s not him answering, it should be one of the selectors. But that’s the way England like to do things. It disappoints me because I’m quite an approachable guy. Maybe I’m a bit straight-talking but it’s the best way to be in this world – say what’s on your mind.”About Carberry’s comments Giles added: “It was unfortunate, I think unnecessary, especially the timing. You don’t do your laundry in public.”Carberry did not only have barbs for Giles, having a significant dig at the management as a whole for their lack of communication with him after the Australia tour. The ECB referred the article to the Press Complaints Commission, not for any dispute over whether Carberry’s quotes were genuine but because they did not think enough had been done to reflect the ECB’s side. However, a change of coach brought a clean slate and Carberry was included for the T20 and ODIs against Sri Lanka earlier this season, although he endured a poor T20 outing and only played once during the one-day series.

BCB to investigate alleged altercation between Shakib, spectator

The BCB will investigate an alleged altercation between Shakib Al Hasan and a spectator during the first ODI against India in Mirpur

The BCB will investigate an alleged altercation between Shakib Al Hasan and a spectator during the first ODI against India in Mirpur. Acting CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury has said that the board will hear all sides of the story before taking any decision.”We have heard of an incident which we will look into after the series,” Nizamuddin said. “Like you, we have heard of what happened but we haven’t seen. So we have to look at all sides before we can tell you anything more.”Later during the press conference, Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim said the team would have to bear the brunt of the situation, irrespective of whether a player was allegedly at fault.”It was not in my control, and I hadn’t heard it when the incident happened,” Mushfiqur said. “I was busy calculating what would have happened in case of a match taking place. It would be better to talk to the management. If I had known, I could have told you.”I didn’t see what happened. A lot can be said. Whatever the public says, we have to bow our heads to them. So I would say it is not just his fault, but the whole team’s fault. It can be anyone, so the team has to be the sufferer.”Earlier in the year, the BCB banned Shakib for three ODIs and fined him $3800 for making inappropriate gestures on a live television broadcast during an ODI against Sri Lanka.

Broad offers remedy for KP-Strauss spat

Stuart Broad has suggested that Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Strauss should go for a quiet drink to resolve their differences.

Stuart Broad has suggested that Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Strauss should go for a quiet drink to resolve their differences.Strauss reignited the ill-feeling between the pair when he was overheard calling Pietersen “an absolute c***” while commentating on MCC v Rest of the World for Sky Sports at Lord’s on Saturday. While Strauss thought he was off-air, the feed was still live in some territories and, thanks to social media, was soon heard around the world.Ironically, Pietersen was alleged to have referred to Strauss in similar terms – albeit in Afrikaans – in messages exchanged with members of the South Africa team during the summer of 2012.Strauss was captain of England’s Test team at the time and, after the contents of the messages became public, Pietersen was dropped from the England team for the final Test of that summer and the subsequent World T20.But while Broad dismissed the suggestion that the incident would distract the England team ahead of the Test series against India, he did express a hope that the pair – both former England captains – would resolve their differences.”They live pretty near to each other,” Broad told the BBC. “I’m sure Straussy will have KP round for a glass of white or red, and discuss what’s happened. I’m sure the invite will go out.”Two ex-England cricketers having a bit of an issue is not something that is relevant to the England changing room.”

England get their mind right

There was no ticket-tape parade, no open-air bus ride, no ICC mace or MBEs for the victory at the Ageas Bowl but, in years to come, we may just look back on it as the first step in a journey that led to a resurgence in England cricket

George Dobell01-Aug-2014There was no ticket-tape parade, no open-air bus ride, no ICC mace or MBEs for the victory at the Ageas Bowl but, in years to come, we may just look back on it as the first step in a journey that led to a resurgence in England cricket. There is, no doubt, a great deal of room for improvement in the England team. They need to find greater consistency, they need greater contributions from all areas of the side and they will know that, at the Ageas Bowl, had Alastair Cook, Ian Bell, Gary Ballance and Jos Buttler all been dismissed early in their innings – as they so nearly were – the result might well have been different. One good game does not end the legitimate concerns about Cook’s – or Bell’s – form and there will be times, as the likes of Buttler, Moeen Ali and Sam Robson learn their trade at the highest level, when patience is required. But it would be wrong to dismiss England’s success as simply a change of fortune. From the moment Cook won the toss and elected to bat – a weaker captain would have put off his moment of truth and chosen to bowl first – England played positive cricket, with Ballance, Bell and Buttler providing acceleration with the bat; James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes providing probing seam bowling and Moeen effective spin. They deserved their win.It was a change of mindset rather than a change of tactics that was behind this performance. There was a little more belief, a little more intent, a little more enjoyment apparent in this side. While the impact of an energetic new keeper should not be underestimated – however raw Buttler’s keeping, there is nothing more dispiriting for a side than seeing edges dropped and Buttler held on to those offered to him – the key change was instigated by the coach, Peter Moores.Moores is still getting his feet under the desk in his second term as coach. Taking charge of this England team was akin to trying to turn an oil tanker. Defeat and disappointment was becoming so ingrained, that it was always likely to take a while to rediscover the energy and optimism that are the characteristics of the better sides.Moores, recognising this in the run-up to the Test, made a point of talking to several of the senior players and encouraging them to put the pain of Australia behind them and “reconnect” with the methods that first rendered them successful international players.Moores confident over Broad

Moores on Cook:

“As a captain, he had a very good game but also as a player. Interestingly, before the Test match, the tougher it got, the steelier Alastair tends to get. That’s part of his nature. He has worked hard on his game. He said at Lord’s that he felt it was getting better. But to see results on the pitch is really important.”

Moores on Broad:

“We’ve seen through the Test that Stuart has managed it [his knee] really well. It doesn’t mean it has gone away – it hasn’t – but we’ll continue to tackle it. We expect him to be fit for Old Trafford but, like all players, we must see how he reacts to the workload. He had a smaller workload in the second innings here so hopefully that will help.”

Moores on DRS:

“We’ve made our feelings clear. We would like to have DRS. And I think the umpires would say the same. But the lads have just accepted it. Credit to the players who have had some tough decisions: Gary Ballance has scored 200 runs in the game, but had two tough decision. It will be interesting over time whether India start to move with DRS or if it is taken out of their hands.”

Moores on Buttler:

“He had a great start. I enjoyed seeing how relaxed he was out there. The quality of his keeping was high and he obviously fitted in really well. We’re not going to get carried away – we know we have a lot more work to do.”

“When you are with players for a certain period of time, you get to know them a bit better,” Moores said. “One of the things that we were trying to move away from was a mindset that was more defensive, where you are just trying to hold on to things. When you are under pressure, there is always a danger that you are looking to be careful.”We’re trying to look to play cricket where you are on the front foot and you are trying to put people under pressure.”I think Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad were fantastic in this Test. They have reconnected to what the game is about: it’s about getting out there and playing for their country. I think that’s made a big difference. It’s certainly made a big difference to the whole bowling unit. On the last day, it was great to see us come out with the same level of intensity and create some theatre.”We have to find out as a team how we can apply pressure, how we can keep each other going and what makes people tick. When somebody gets a little down, how are we going to make sure we can pick him up?”The dressing room has never been dispirited. And I never expected it to be easy. But provided we have everybody totally committed and driving it forward, we will get to where we want to be.”Whether that last comment was a veiled reference to the decision to “move on” from Kevin Pietersen is open to debate. But Moores did reiterate that the new-look team would take time to build and asked for patience from England supporters who are understandably frustrated at the decline over recent months.”It’s a case of growing and understanding each other as a team,” Moores said. “It doesn’t matter what you do: if you put ten people together, they have got to get to know each other. It is the same as with a cricket team.”We know, because of so much change and so many new players, that we have to work really hard. This series is brilliantly poised but the development of a Test team takes time.We are rebuilding, no doubt, and at times we will get things wrong.”But I’m hoping the public are getting excited about some new faces and the development of a new team. That might mean that results are a bit up and down but, providing they see the right level of commitment and the talent that is coming to fruition, that is where we will try to get to.”

Dravid to mentor India in England

Former India captain Rahul Dravid has been appointed in a mentoring role to the team in the run-up to their five-Test series in England. Dravid will have a few sessions with the players before the series begins on July 9. He is expected to join the team latest by Monday. The move was initiated by the team management, according to BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel. “It was the coach (Duncan Fletcher) who approached us on behalf of the team and said it would be good to have Rahul with his vast experience spend some time with the boys ahead of the series,” Patel told ESPNcricinfo. “We immediately requested Rahul and he readily agreed.”This will be the first time Dravid, who has been mentoring IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals after retiring from international cricket in 2012, will be associated in such a capacity with the national team.In March this year, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar had said that Dravid should take over as India coach, but the latter had declined the suggestion citing lack of time.”Rahul Dravid is one man who is enormously respected and was a successful captain, having won series in West Indies and England,” Gavaskar had said. “When he speaks, the Indian players, some of whom are superstars, listen to him as they know how much preparation went into his game.””I am happy that he (Gavaskar) said I am capable of doing the job,” Dravid had said. “But the job requires a lot of time, almost 11 months a year. I have just retired and at the moment because of time constraints, I have to decline.”Dravid was India’s best batsman on their previous tour of England in 2011, his three centuries the only bright spot in a 0-4 rout. In all, six of Dravid’s 36 Test hundreds came in England, where he made 1376 runs in 13 Tests at an average of 68.80. He also had a successful stint with county side Kent in 2000, scoring 1221 runs in 16 matches at 55.50 with two centuries.
