A comprehensive win over Southern Express and Northern Knights’ win over Mumbai Indians lifted Lahore Lions into the main draw of the Champions League T20
The Report by Rachna Shetty16-Sep-2014 Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsA comprehensive win over Southern Express and Northern Knights’ win over Mumbai Indians lifted Lahore Lions into the main draw of the Champions League T20. Lions had bettered their chances of qualifying after the big win in the first game of the day but their progress also depended on the result of the game between Knights and Mumbai and the New Zealand team’s six-wicket win smoothed the road for Lions. At the toss, Express captain Jehan Mubarak had said that he had chosen to bowl because he preferred chasing a target with the qualification at stake, and had aimed to restrict Lions to a total in the range of 130-140. Those goals, however, came undone in the last five overs of the Lions innings against an attacking innings from Mohammad Hafeez, who blasted 67 off 40 balls.Lions went into their last five overs on 89 for 3 before Hafeez changed gears. He blasted Seekkuge Prasanna for a four and three successive sixes off the first four balls of the 16th over, which went for 25. The Lions captain followed that up with a few more big hits and brought up the 150 for the side with a six and four off Charith Jayampathi in the 19th over. By the time the innings ended at 164 for 6, 75 had come off the last five overs.Express needed one of their top-order batsmen to replicate the kind of innings Hafeez had played but their challenge began withering away soon, as Aizaz Cheema reduced them to 36 for 3. An already weakened innings stumbled along to an early finish as Express lost four wickets for six runs, including Mubarak who had struck a brisk 35.Cheema, who missed out on a hat-trick for the third successive match in the tournament, finished with 3 for 15 and was well supported by Wahab Riaz and Adnan Rasool as Express folded for 109 in 18 overs.Lions dominated thoroughly with the ball but they lacked fluency in the first half of their batting innings. Until the 15th over, the Express bowlers had done a good job of restraining the batsmen, specially after Farveez Maharoof’s strikes in successive overs.Lions’ opening pair of Umar Siddiq, promoted up the order in place of Nasir Jamshed, and Ahmed Shehzad had made a confident start before Maharoof landed the first breakthrough, enticing a dab from Siddiq that was caught by wicketkeeper Kusal Perera. Maharoof’s next over turned out to be even better with the wickets of Shehzad and Jamshed, both batsmen out to poor shots. The next seven overs saw Lions score just 37 runs as Hafeez and Saad Nasim focused on rebuilding the innings and set up a flourish at the end.

After the extension to his term as team director, Shastri will no longer be able to perform any role as a media expert. He will neither commentate nor write syndicated columns for newspapers after the conclusion of the Champions League Twenty20 till the end of the World Cup. While the BCCI had no problems in Shastri continuing his media obligations during the West Indies series and joining the team support staff in Australia, Shastri is believed to have told the BCCI hierarchy that he would prefer to join the team straightaway to suit both himself and the team. According to a BCCI insider, Shastri felt he wouldn’t be able express his opinions on air about players he would be joining and if he does, it may not send the right signals to the players before he joins them in the dressing room.
Ravi Shastri will continue as the Indian team’s director of cricket until the end of the 2015 World Cup, following a decision taken at the BCCI’s working committee meeting on Friday. Duncan Fletcher remains head coach of the side while the tenures of the three support staff members – Sanjay Bangar, B Arun and R Sridhar – have been extended until the end of the World Cup.The working committee also decided that the board’s annual general meeting (AGM), where the office bearers for the next three years will be elected, will be held on November 20.According to its own regulations, the BCCI has to convene its AGM before September 30 every year. The meeting has, however, been deferred this year after India’s Supreme Court ordered BCCI president N Srinivasan to step aside until the investigations into the IPL 2013 corruption scandal were complete. The ambiguity over the powers of the interim president, Shivlal Yadav, had added to the issues surrounding the delay of the AGM.*The working committee authorised secretary Sanjay Patel to decide the fate of Joe Dawes and Trevor Penney, India’s bowling and fielding coach respectively who had been sent on leave midway through the England tour. While Patel had confirmed earlier this week that both the coaches had been offered to work at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore, he would discuss the issue in detail with the duo before arriving at a final decision. If Dawes and Penney are to be released before their contract expires at the end of March 2015, they will have to be compensated financially for premature termination. At today’s meeting, the working committee also congratulated N Srinivasan, who attended as a representative of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association, for having taken over as the ICC chairman. It would be interesting to see if Srinivasan’s presence in the working committee would be interpreted as contempt of court since the working committee is the board’s decision-making body.Aditya Verma, the petitioner in the IPL corruption-scandal case, took strong objections to Srinivasan attending the meeting and stated that he will raise the point when his application on forcing the BCCI to immediately convene its AGM will be heard by the Supreme Court on October 10. According to Verma, the Supreme Court in its various orders had specified “Srinivasan will not attend any day to day affairs of BCCI till the probe concludes. But today BCCI, headed by Mr Shivlal Yadav, has clearly violated the order of honourable Supreme Court”.With regards to the Rajasthan Cricket Association’s suspension case, while the working committee decided to wait till the disciplinary committee’s proceedings in the matter are completed, the members felt the BCCI needed to make another attempt to ensure the players do not suffer. As a result, the ad-hoc committee constituted to oversee cricket in disputed regions, headed by Karnataka State Cricket Association secretary Brijesh Patel, has been advised to make one last attempt to sort out the issue with the Rajasthan state government.Brijesh Patel and his colleagues in the committee are thus expected to try and meet Rajasthan state government officials to try and convince them to let a BCCI-backed Rajasthan team participate in domestic tournaments. Since RCA is governed under Rajasthan Sports Act, the BCCI cannot nominate a team from Rajasthan without the state government’s permission. The committee also approved the accounts for the previous financial year which was signed by the treasurer. Other decisions taken at the meeting included limiting A teams to Under-23 players, and forming a committee to assess the damage caused by the floods in Jammu & Kashmir to the state’s cricketing infrastructure.* September 26 2.30pm GMT This story has been modified with updates about the status of Joe Dawes and Trevor Penney

Brendan Taylor has blamed Zimbabwe’s poor batting as the reason for their narrow loss in the first Test against Bangladesh
Devashish Fuloria in Mirpur27-Oct-2014Brendan Taylor has blamed Zimbabwe’s poor batting as the reason for their narrow loss in the first Test against Bangladesh. Defending a target of 101, Zimbabwe picked up the first three wickets with the score on zero and would have improved their chances further had John Nyumbu taken the catches of Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah. But despite Zimbabwe’s fight, Bangladesh sneaked through for a three-wicket win.”We have been saying 150 would have been very interesting,” Taylor said. “But at the end of the day, we batted badly and did not deserve to win the game.”They could have been 10 for 5 but that’s the way it goes. If we could have got Shakib there and (Mahmudullah) Riyad, that would have been a big difference. Good teams and good fielders will take those chances and probably we didn’t have our best fielder there at that time.”In the first innings, only one Zimbabwe batsman went past fifty as the team was bowled out for 240. Led by Tinashe Panyangara’s five-wicket haul, the visitors managed to restrict Bangladesh’s lead to 14 but when it came to their batsmen to set up the game, they fared worse than the first innings. Zimbabwe lost seven wickets in the morning session and were soon bowled out for 114 in 35.5 overs.”Losing the match always hurts,” Taylor said. “We can be proud of the way we fought and tried to defend a 100 runs but being bowled out for 114, that’s what hurts the most. We were very disappointing. The way we got out, we didn’t really show any fight. At the end of the day, if we are not going to put runs on the board and put a prize on our wickets, we are not going to win too many games. So we have got a lot to learn from this game. But I can assure you that in the second game the guys will be a lot more disciplined, lot hungrier to succeed.”The bounce on the Dhaka pitch that should have helped strokeplay, according to Taylor, was also the reason for the downfall of batsmen from both sides. But while Zimbabwe’s batsmen faltered against spin, Bangladesh’s players were undone by pace.”It was a good cricket wicket. Pace and bounce and turn, that’s going to make entertaining cricket, but definitely bad batting will have to be the case,” Taylor said. “I think we can agree that both sides batted badly, there were soft dismissals and guys didn’t apply themselves. Twenties and thirties are not going to win you Test matches. Guys need to convert those.”After the first innings in which Bangladesh spinners shared nine wickets, a lot of focus was on how Zimbabwe’s inexperienced spinners were going to bowl. But despite the help available from the pitch, the two spinners – Nyumbu and Tafadzwa Kamungozi – had just one wicket between them in the match.”I think our two spinners were a little bit weak,” Taylor said. “But unfortunately we lost two very good players, Sean Williams and Prosper Utseya, but that is not an excuse. Our spinners haven’t played a lot of first-class cricket and they weren’t good enough today. So they have got a lot to learn. Hopefully there might be a change in the second Test match. “Legspinner Natsai M’shangwe, who picked up the most wickets in the only practice match in Fatullah, could be an option. But Taylor said that the team was waiting for the bowler to recover from a minor niggle.”There is a very good chance (of M’shangwe playing in the second Test),” Taylor said. “He has been carrying a bit of a niggle so whether he is ready to go or not, I am not too sure. We will have to make a few changes and not become too predictable.”Zimbabwe came in to the series as underdogs and fought hard, but they will still go to the Khulna Test trailing 0-1. Taylor said they would have to maintain their intensity.”There are still two matches. So it’s still not gone. The momentum may be with them but we have shown we can fight. There is not much to choose between the sides. The conditions might favour them but we will have to come to Khulna with a mindset that we are going to win.”

Torcida contesta a contratação
Four years of Jerome Taylor’s international career were ravaged by injury, but the fast bowler, who has made a successful return to West Indies’ Test side, says he never thought of giving up the game

Jerome Taylor has taken 18 wickets in five Test matches since his return from a lengthy injury-enforced lay-off•WICB
October 2006. A 22-year-old fast bowler rips through the defences of Michael Hussey, Brett Lee and Brad Hogg at the Brabourne Stadium to become the first West Indian to get a hat-trick in ODIs. The bowler oozes promise and his spell is crucial in West Indies winning the Champions Trophy match by 10 runs.October 2014. The fast bowler, on a comeback trail after a long hiatus, is back at the Brabourne Stadium, as West Indies embark on their third tour to India in three years, and the memory of that hat-trick still fresh in his mind.”How can I forget anything like that? It is there and it will be there for a very long while until I can put something in front of that,” Jerome Taylor said, on the eve of the practice match against India A. “But that was one-day cricket and that’s in the past. There are lot of things that can be achieved in the future. I am actually working on being a better cricketer overall as well.”It has been a tough road for Taylor. His international career was disrupted with a spate of injuries when he was at his peak and there was a 32-month period during which all he played were a couple of domestic T20 matches. Moreover, during this period, his commitment to returning to the fold was questioned by the West Indies Cricket Board. Despite the setbacks, Taylor never thought of giving up the game altogether aside.”That thought [retirement] never crossed my mind,” he says. “It was more of physical challenge than a mental one. I have undergone a lot of stuff to get back to this point. It was a lot of work in the back end and it worked okay for me.”Taylor made a comeback to international cricket earlier this year during the series against New Zealand and has picked up 18 wickets in the five Tests since his return. The current version is not the tearaway fast bowler from five years ago, but Taylor, who is striving for consistency, says he maintains the ability to bowl a heavy ball. The tour of India will be his first full series since his return.”This might be a good series for me,” he says. “If I give a good account of myself against one of the top-ranking teams, that would actually boost my confidence and would help my career move forward. When I look at the Indian team and their batting line-up, yes, you will be put under pressure, but you have to spend hours in the field if you want to hit the straps as soon as possible.”What I do is try to listen to my body and use that as a guide going forward. Your body will tell you whenever something is wrong or right, and as a competitor, you cannot be afraid of expressing yourself in the park. Yes, it is going to stay in the back of your mind, but if you let that take over, then it’s going to hurt so much.”The addition of Taylor, along with Kemar Roach, has given the West Indies pace attack a potency that had been absent for a while. It’s still a new partnership. “I haven’t bowled much with Kemar since he came onto the scene,” Taylor says. “It’s only in the last two Test series that we have got together and it is something that is working really well. We even work together in the nets, we share information and stuff like that. So we are looking forward to whatever challenge lies ahead.”One of the challenges will be the conditions. In Mumbai, where the team plays both its practice matches, the temperatures have hit post-monsoon highs of 35 degrees, with almost 80% humidity. “It’s not a place where you can blast batters out,” Taylor says. Patience will be the key and Taylor knows a thing or two about it.
A round-up of the Dhaka Premier Division matches played on November 15, 2014
ESPNcricinfo staff15-Nov-2014Nazmus Sadat’s 91 was in vain as Brothers Union failed to chase down a target of 238 and lost by 14 runs to Prime Bank Cricket Club. Sadat had little support from the other batsmen of Brothers Union as they were reined in by the Prime Bank bowlers. Mohammad Forkan picked up 3 for 26, while Tapash Baisya, Farhad Reza, Enamul Haque jnr all picked up two wickets apiece. Earlier, as many as four Prime Bank batsmen were out for ducks but fifties from Dilshan Munaweera (53) and Reza (51*) helped the side post 237 for 9 on the board. An all-round performance from Jeevan Mendis, who scored a fifty and took a four-for, helped Kalabagan Cricket Academy successfully defend a total of 231 by 11 runs against Old DOHS Sports Club. Mendis broke a thriving 115-run, second-wicket stand between Shanaj Ahmed (72) and Shehan Jayasuriya (74), and then quickly snaffled three more wickets to hasten the batting side’s slide towards a defeat. Earlier, his knock of 62 and a 119-run, fifth-wicket partnership with Mahmudul Hasan (54) hauled Kalabagan from a grave 39 for 4 to 158 for 4. Mohammad Sharif’s 18-ball 33 at No. 9 then helped the team finish at 231.Chamara Kapugedera’s 106 was in vain as Victoria Sporting Club lost to Mohammedan Sporting Club by 53 runs (D/L method) in a match affected by bad light.Mohammedan Sporting Club had put up 282 runs on the board but Victoria were set a revised target of 275 in 46.1 overs. At the end of their allotted overs, the side could manage only 221 for 9 as the other batsmen failed to support Kapugedera. Alauddin Babu and Rahatul Ferdous picked up three wickets each.Earlier Naeem Islam’s 92, supported by fifties from Mohammad Mithun (83) and Angelo Perera (50), propelled Mohammedan Sporting Club’s strong total. Naeem added 122 runs for the third wicket with Mithun to help the side overcome the loss of early wickets and then added 76 for the fourth wicket with Perera.
