ScorecardJon Holland finished with 4 for 61•Getty ImagesVictoria have been charged with ball-tampering during their win over South Australia at the Adelaide Oval, where Jon Holland took a career-best four-wicket haul. The Bushrangers were penalised five runs during South Australia’s innings after the umpires Simon Fry and Bob Parry found markings on the ball after the last delivery on the second day.The side will face a Code of Conduct hearing this week after being reported for a level one offence under rule 1.7 of the Cricket Australia Code of Behaviour, which relates to “failure by a team to ensure the condition of a ball is not changed in breach of law 42.3”. The standard penalty is a fine of 10% of each player’s match fee, as well as the five-run penalty.Victoria’s captain Cameron White said after play he was not aware of any specifics to do with the alleged breach. “I can’t say a lot, obviously the umpires have made an allegation,” White told AAP. “We know that it’s a team thing and it’s a hearing so that is about all we know to be honest. We actually … don’t know what the allegation is at this stage, so when we find out, we’ll assess where it goes from there.”The charges took the gloss off a comprehensive eight-wicket win for Victoria, which took only three days. Chasing 81 for victory, the Bushrangers reached their target with only two wickets down, with Aaron Finch on 25 and David Hussey on 8, after the Redbacks struggled in their second innings.Only one ball was possible in the first session due to rain, and when play resumed South Australia quickly lost Callum Ferguson for 15. Holland and Clint McKay (3 for 66) then ran through the rest of the Redbacks line-up to keep the home side to 213.The left-arm spinner Holland ended up with 4 for 61 and in the current state of Australian spin bowling, a couple more handy performances like that and he could find himself in the mix for a national call-up. The win was Victoria’s second of the summer and they sit fourth on the Sheffield Shield table, while the Redbacks are second-last.

Man United in the lead for Darwin Nunez

Manchester United appear to be leading the likes of Tottenham in the race to sign Benfica forward Darwin Nunez.

The Lowdown: Man Utd interest in Nunez

Described as an ‘absolute beast’ earlier this month during a podcast discussing his display against Liverpool, the Uruguayan appears to be a man in demand this summer following his starring campaign in Portugal.

The 22-year-old has scored a whopping 33 goals in 39 games, impressing as a centre-forward, second striker and left winger.

The Uruguay international was linked with a big-money move to Manchester last week, and a fresh update has now emerged in their pursuit of a possible club-record deal.

The Latest: United leading the way for Nunez

Sport Witness relayed an update from Spanish outlet AS regarding Nunez on Tuesday. They claimed that 22-year-old could link up with super-agent Jorge Mendes, who is set to meet with ‘several English clubs’ regarding the Benfica forward.

United are thought to be ‘in the lead’ following an ‘express request’ from new manager Erik ten Hag.

The Verdict: Huge

Cristiano Ronaldo looks likely to be the only senior centre-forward available to Ten Hag when he arrives, with Edinson Cavani set to depart Old Trafford over the coming months.

Therefore, bringing in an exciting young attacker who has been prolific this season in numerous positions seems to be a smart move going forward.

Benfica want €130m for Nunez, which equates to around £109m and would make him the most expensive United signing of all time ahead of Paul Pogba, but it could prove to be the perfect one for Ten Hag in what the Red Devils are hoping will be a new era for the club.

Leeds: Brennan Johnson update emerges

Leeds United will make Nottingham Forest forward Brennan Johnson a ‘prominent target’, should Jesse Marsch keep the Whites in the Premier League, according to The Daily Mail.

The Lowdown: Johnson starring at Forest

Johnson, who can play anywhere across the front three, has scored 15 times in 43 Championship games this season.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-42/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The 20-year-old has now netted 29 senior goals during his career and has played a key role in Forest’s push for promotion to the Premier League.

As is stands, the Wales international will be entering the final 12 months of his City Ground deal in the summer, and it looks as if Leeds are still keen after Victor Orta revealed he tried to sign the winger when he was just 16.

The Daily Mail shared an update regarding Leeds and Johnson on Tuesday afternoon.

They claimed that the Whites will join Brentford and Newcastle in the race to sign the forward, valued at £20m, in the summer.

However, the report adds that Marsch will need to keep Leeds in the top flight and Forest will have to remain in the Championship for a transfer to have any chance of materialising.

The Verdict: Next few weeks key

It looks as if Andrea Radrizzani and the 49ers group are willing to reward Marsch, should he guide the Whites to safety, by splashing the cash ahead of his first full season in charge.

However, there is still a lot of work to be done, and you could argue there is a growing possibility Leeds and Forest will be swapping divisions over the coming weeks.

Hopefully, that isn’t the case, and if the Whites want to sign Johnson, they’ll be keeping a close eye on Forest’s automatic and playoff promotion bids in the second tier.

Zander de Bruyn joins Surrey

Zander de Bruyn, the former South Africa allrounder, has joined Surrey on a one-year deal for the 2011 English season after spending three summers at Somerset. At Somerset he scored 2,497 first-class runs at an average of 38.41 and added a further 1,656 in one-day cricket, averaging 53.41. In all, he scored seven centuries and 32 fifties in all competitions. He joins as a Kolpak player but is one year away from securing a British passport and his wife is a British Citizen.de Bruyn will link up with Surrey in early April after his South Africa season with the Lions finishes. “I’m obviously excited and looking forward to the new challenge at Surrey, especially getting a chance to play regularly at a Test ground with the quality players that they have in the squad,” he said.Surrey cricket manager, Chris Adams, said: “The experience of a man like Zander de Bruyn will be utterly invaluable in our dressing room. Although I am convinced we have some of the finest young talents in the country in our squad, playing alongside someone with the knowhow of Zander will be hugely beneficial in all areas.”Also, with the recent injury to Mark Ramprakash making his situation relatively unclear for the start of next season, it was vital we had an experienced batsman to turn to and provide a steady hand and this gives us exactly that.”Rory Hamilton-Brown, Surrey captain, added: “We have a really exciting and very young squad at the moment, so adding someone of the quality and experience of Zander de Bruyn was an absolute must. It’s really exciting to have someone like him coming into the Club and being with us all season.”His presence will also play a huge part in helping our younger players learn, just by watching someone of his class going about his day-to-day business.”

Everton transfer news on Richarlison

Paul Robinson has now dropped an Everton claim after some transfer news emerged on Richarlison.

The Lowdown: £50m+ wanted

As per Football Insider, a recruitment source has revealed that the Goodison Park faithful will now listen to offers for Richarlison in the summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-5/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

They are confident that they can sell him for at least £50m, as he is under contract on Merseyside until June 2024, putting the Toffees in an extremely strong negotiating position even if they go down.

The Latest: Robinson reacts

Speaking to Football Insider, former Tottenham Hotspur and England international goalkeeper Robinson, who now contributes for Sky Sports, has claimed that Richarlison’s price tag is ‘massive’, but admits that the Toffees need a ‘huge’ overhaul this summer, and so could look to cash in on the Brazil international:

“He has been in and out of form this season.

“I don’t think he’s been good enough in all honesty. They’re down in the bottom three for a reason.

“Richarlison has a massive price tag on his head and a massive reputation.

“He has not performed enough this season. He has scored a few important goals but it’s not been enough. Most of the Everton players have underperformed and he is one of them.

“They need a huge overhaul in the summer but the financial situation is difficult. They will have to sell before they buy. If Everton can get a good price for Richarlison they should cash in and revamp their squad with that money.

“I think it’s a similar situation to Raphinha at Leeds. They are the kind of luxury players you can afford to cash in on. Everton need players out of the door to bring in finances.

“They need players who are going to keep them in the Premier League next season. Richarlison isn’t consistent enough.”

The Verdict: Snap your hand off

If the Blues can get anywhere near £50m for Richarlison in the summer, then they should take it and run.

Yes, he has scored some important goals recently, including a last-minute equaliser in the 1-1 draw at home to Leicester City and most recently the winner against Chelsea, but overall has been far too inconsistent to warrant that price tag, scoring just nine times in total over all competitions so far this season (Transfermarkt).

Richarlison has also been criticised for having attitude problems when things do not go right for him on he pitch, and so a player who could be a disruption in the dressing room is one that Frank Lampard and his team could do without, should they receive a huge transfer sum.

Mashrafe Mortaza not in World Cup squad

Mashrafe Mortaza has lost his race to be fit for the World Cup after being left out of Bangladesh’s squad for the tournament

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Jan-2011Mashrafe Mortaza, the Bangladesh allrounder, has not been included in the 15-man squad for the World Cup. Mortaza had injured his right knee while playing club cricket in Dhaka in December and was striving to recover in time for the tournament. He had begun bowling off a short run-up during net sessions in the last few days but the selectors decided against including him in the campaign. Shakib Al Hasan was named captain of the squad and Tamim Iqbal will be his deputy.”There is little chance that Mortaza will be fit before the World Cup,” chief selector Rafiqul Alam told AFP, adding that coach Jamie Siddons supported this assessment. “Mortaza, however, has the chance to be included in the team later if he fully recovers and an opportunity arises.”Mortaza’s absence is a blow to Bangladesh but they have enjoyed a string of positive results under Shakib recently, including beating New Zealand 4-0 in October 2010 and Zimbabwe 3-1 in their most recent outing in December. The doubt over Mortaza’s selection was the only major question ahead of the announcement. And though his exclusion effectively means that Mortaza won’t be part of the World Cup, Siddons was optimistic. “He [Mortaza] is on track with his rehab. He was supposed to bowl today, bowl off a full run-up at the end of the month in eight to ten days,” Siddons had told the day before the squad was announced.”We definitely want him to be fit. If the selectors don’t pick him, and if he’s fit by the first match, we can use him as a replacement in the World Cup. There are a few good reasons for him to bowl. I expect him to be fit by the start of the World Cup. I want him in the team, I want a fit Mashrafe.”The Bangladesh physiotherapist, Michael Henry, had said Mortaza had “responded well and there were no negative repercussions after his bowling stint.”Mortaza described his exclusion “as the most painful day” of his life. “I was 100% confident of regaining my fitness,” Mortaza told reporters. “However, this is life and I am quite accustomed to it.”I respect their decision and you can say this is just bad luck.”Bangladesh will play the tournament opener against India in Dhaka on February 19 after which they play their remaining group games at home.Squad: Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes, Junaid Siddique, Shahriar Nafees, Raqibul Hasan, Mohammad Ashraful, Mushfiqur Rahim, Naeem Islam, Mahmudullah, Abdur Razzak, Rubel Hossain, Shafiul Islam, Nazmul Hossain, Suhrawadi Shuvo.

Sunderland suffer Broadhead injury blow

Sunderland have been hit with a huge injury setback over centre-forward Nathan Broadhead…

What’s the latest?

Black Cats manager Alex Neil has hinted at a worrying blow for the on-loan Welshman, who limped off in the win against Morecambe on Saturday.

The 40-year-old has claimed that Ross Stewart is currently the only number nine who is fit and available in the squad ahead of Sunderland’s big play-off clash with Sheffield Wednesday later this week.

The Examiner quote him as saying: “The worry we’ve got now is we’ve finished the game with no centre forward on the pitch, I brought Stewart off because I knew the scores elsewhere. He’s literally [our only striker].. I don’t need to say anything else do I?”

Supporters will be raging

The prospect of Broadhead being unavailable for the first leg against Wednesday will surely leave Sunderland fans raging, as it would be a major blow for the Wearsider’s promotion prospects.

He has been phenomenal for the Black Cats since joining on loan from Everton, proving himself to be a reliable goalscorer at this level. The 24-year-old netted the winner against Morecambe to seal a play-off spot and that was his 10th League One goal of the season, on just his 15th start.

His recent form for the club has been sensational, with 11 goals in his last 14 outings in all competitions. This shows that he has been red-hot in front of goal and that is why the fans, and indeed Neil, will be desperate for the 20-year-old to be fit for the play-offs.

Sunderland are set to battle for a place in the Championship and they will need their best players to be fit and available for selection to give themselves the best chance of reaching the second tier. Broadhead’s goalcoring record suggests that he is one of the club’s top talents, as he has the quality to be a game-changer at the top end of the pitch with his finishing ability.

Therefore, supporters will be raging with Neil’s claim that Stewart is the only fit striker in the squad ahead of their clash with Darren Moore’s team on Friday night. Hopefully it turns out to be merely a minor issue for the Everton loanee and he is able to feature but, for now, Sunderland fans will likely be very worried about his condition.

Former cricketers Martin Crowe and Shane Bond, along with Gerard Gillespie, have been included in the New Zealand board’s cricket committee as non-board members. The committee, which was established following the team’s 0-4 defeat in Bangladesh, includes the board’s chief Chris Moller, and members Stephen Boock, Rob Hart and High Court judge Sir John Hansen. The committee’s remit runs from the grassroots all the way up to the highest level. Crowe and Bond were added to provide expertise on elite cricketing matters, while Gillespie came in for his grassroots knowledge of the game.”The NZC board believes the formation of the cricket committee with the appointment of such highly talented external members is a very significant step, and recognises the need to harness the knowledge, experience and skills of the entire cricket family,” Boock said. “The objective of the committee is to assist the board to promote, develop and foster cricket in New Zealand by gathering information from all areas of cricket, combining it with the views of the committee and providing this information as advice to the Board.”The board refrained from making sweeping changes to the team following the Bangladesh debacle, but called on the players to lift their performance during the tour of India. Despite punching above their weight in the the three-Test series, New Zealand could not prevent top-ranked India from winning 1-0. The one-dayers that followed, however, did little to suggest an upswing in New Zealand’s fortunes and they presently trail 0-4, with one game to play. They have now lost their last ten completed one-dayers, a streak that began in August.
