Tottenham make contact for Lingard

Taking to Twitter, Sportitalia TV reporter Rudy Galetti has shared some Tottenham Hotspur transfer news involving attacking midfielder Jesse Lingard.

The Lowdown: Spurs eye Lingard…

As reported by multiple reliable sources, Tottenham have joined the race to sign Manchester United’s man with his contract set to expire in 2022 as things stand.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Lingard could agree a move to Spurs on a free deal later this year or, alternatively, sign for the Lilywhites and manager Antonio Conte for a reduced fee this month.

Alasdair Gold and Sky Sports both back that Tottenham are interested with Sportitalia TV reporter Galetti now sharing what he knows.

The Latest: Galetti makes Lingard to Spurs claim…

According to his update, Spurs have made contact to ask for information alongside competitors West Ham and Newcastle in the race for his signing.

The Red Devils, meanwhile, could even let him leave Old Trafford for less than £10 million this month as United ‘request’ around ‘€10-15m’ (£8.4m-£12.5m).

The Verdict: Bargain?

Homegrown, proven in the Premier League and at international level – signing Lingard this month for anywhere around £8.4m could prove to be a masterstroke by sporting director Fabio Paratici.

If they can get a deal done, or alternatively wait to the summer, the 29-year-old could come in to finally fill the void left by former fan favourite Christian Eriksen in a creative midfield role.

Scoring nine goals and assisting four others across his half-season loan spell at West Ham in 2021, he was lauded as ‘phenomenal’ and the top flight’s best player on form at the time (Adrian Durham, talkSPORT).

Nurturing that ability from Lingard could certainly boost Tottenham and Conte’s rebuild at N17.

Hopes predicts tough England test

James Hopes expects a more aggressive England to turn out in the one-day series starting on Tuesday than the one that was swept aside last year

Cricinfo staff18-Jun-2010James Hopes expects a more aggressive England to turn out in the one-day series starting on Tuesday than the one that was swept aside last year. Australia, who relied on Hopes to escape defeat against Ireland on Thursday, breezed to a 6-1 victory in 2009, but lost the World Twenty20 final to England in the Caribbean in May.The allrounder Hopes said England’s new-look team would be a threat in home conditions, starting with the opening game at the Rose Bowl. “I’m sure they’re backing themselves to beat us,” Hopes said after the 39-run win in Dublin.”If you add Kevin Pietersen back into their team – he wasn’t there last year – I think they are going to be naturally more aggressive. We’re going to have to get better because if we bowl like we did at the start and the English team get into a position like the Irish team did, they probably would have put us away.”Ireland’s openers raced to 80 in 11 overs in their chase of 232 before Hopes stepped in to take 5 for 14 off nine to secure a victory that prevented an embarrassing result. Everyone but Hopes was rusty after a layoff and the side now heads to Lord’s to play Middlesex in their final warm-up before the England series.”It was good to play the Irish because they are a pretty good team,” Hopes said. “We have another practice match on Saturday and we know a five-match series against England is going to be different to the seven-match series we played last year when we beat them 6-1.”The performance of the Ireland team impressed Hopes and he expects more improvement if they can get regular games against the world’s best sides. “Every time they play a Full Member country, they’re not disgracing themselves,” he said. “They’re putting on a good show and giving teams a good run.”

Modi's legal team confident of positive response

Lalit Modi’s legal team is confident of receiving a positive response, and a favourable outcome, to the mail sent on Tuesday to members of the IPL governing council seeking an independent panel to look into the charges against him. Modi in his mail also asked for Shashank Manohar, the BCCI president, and N Srinivasan, the secretary, to recuse themselves from the entire procedure.Mehmood Abdi, a key member of Lalit Modi’s legal team, said on Wednesday that since both Manohar and Srinivasan were the subject of allegations made by Modi in the mail, they should not be a party to the board’s investigation process of the showcause notice served by the BCCI on April 26.”When the judge fails to recuse himself then the party has got to remind him that, firstly, there is a case of conflict of interest and I have got reasons to believe there is some bias or prejudice against him,” Abdi told Cricinfo. The 14-page mail has alleged, , that Manohar influenced the franchise bidding process in March this year and Srinivasan intervened in the player auction in January. It is this involvement, Modi has argued, that could harm his chances of a fair trial and hence he requested Manohar to step down from the board’s disciplinary committee.Simultaneously Modi also wanted Srinivasan to be suspended and charges of conflict of interest against him be investigated. Modi’s camp has indicated that it may consider going to court if the requests are not granted.Recusal is an established legal option available to any litigant when he apprehends that the adjudicating authority has any interest – especially financial – at stake in the case at hand.”In this case the definition holds true: Mr Srinivasan has got a clear conflict of interest,” Abdi said. The Modi camp, he said, will remain patient and is confident of receiving a reply from Manohar. “Certainly we expect a reply,” he said. “Not only reply, action as well because all of them have been a party to the all the proceedings. There is nothing very unusual being sought by Mr Modi and we expect a fair hearing.”Though Srinivasan and Manohar were not available to respond to what constitutes damaging allegations from Modi, a senior board official indicated it was not considering responding at this juncture. “The board will not offer any comment to what they feel are baseless allegations.”

Liverpool fans delighted with injury latest

A number of Liverpool supporters are delighted after Jurgen Klopp said Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could be fit to face Crystal Palace this weekend.

The Reds made it into the Carabao Cup final on Thursday night, coasting to an impressive 2-0 victory away to Arsenal.

Diogo Jota was Liverpool’s hero at the Emirates, scoring both of his side’s goals as he stepped up in the absence of key duo Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

Someone who was unavailable for the game was Oxlade-Chamberlain, however, who missed out on taking on his former club because of an injury sustained against Brentford last weekend.

Speaking in his pre-Crystal Palace press conference on Friday [via journalist James Pearce on Twitter], Klopp said the midfielder was back in training, meaning he could be available for the weekend trip to Selhurst Park.

RELEMBRE A NOVELA

Romano drops big Arsenal transfer claim

Arsenal are seemingly targeting a major addition this month if emerging reports are to be believed…

What’s the word?

According to Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the north London outfit are seeking a new option to bolster Mikel Arteta’s engine room before the deadline on January 31st and they have as many as three names on their shortlist.

“Arsenal are working to sign a new midfielder. Bruno Guimarães appreciated but currently not discussed as January target – deal too complicated, €45m fee,” he tweeted.

“Arthur Melo on loan has been discussed days ago – but still no talks/contacts with Juve. Three names in the list.”

Exciting news

This will come as exciting news to those around the Emirates Stadium as it is no secret that the Gunners desperately need reinforcements in the heart of midfield.

The north Londoners will be without Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny for the rest of the month as both players are competing at the Africa Cup of Nations, whilst Ainsley Maitland-Niles has completed a loan move to Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma, so that leaves Arteta even more light on options.

“We are very, very short at the moment. We are going to move and look for options because we are very short there,” the 39-year-old revealed to reporters this week.

Indeed, he now only has Granit Xhaka and Albert Sambi Lokonga to call upon for that deeper role, with Martin Odegaard and Emile Smith Rowe capable of playing further forward.

An injury to any of these names could quickly curtail Arsenal’s progress this campaign as they find themselves firmly in the race for a top-four finish.

There is only a four-point gap to seventh place, so the Gunners cannot afford a slip-up and that’s why the club’s hierarchy must push ahead with plans to land a new midfielder this month.

It is certainly encouraging to see them being proactive – as Romano states, they are working to sign someone – so that should leave supporters absolutely buzzing.

Thomas thrilled by Romero news out of Spurs

Taking to Twitter, Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas has reacted to some news out of Tottenham Hotspur involving star summer signing Cristian Romero.

The Lowdown: Spurs boost emerges…

As now confirmed by manager Antonio Conte, the former Atalanta centre-back and Serie A MVP award winner is now back in contention for Tottenham alongside Son Heung-min after a lengthy absence.

Romero has been sidelined since sustaining a ‘very serious’ injury during Argentina’s crunch World Cup qualifier against Brazil in November.

Conte has since had to cope with limited defensive options but now, in what the Italian has described as ‘good news’, Romero has returned to the fold.

The Latest: Thomas makes claim…

Taking to Twitter, reacting to the South American powerhouse’s comeback, Thomas believes his impact will be ‘big’ and has described his potential inclusion as ‘like a new signing’.

“Cristian Romero’s return might also feel like a new signing within the squad by the way,” the Sky man explained.

“He hasn’t been present in Tottenham’s upsurge under Antonio Conte so far, so anticipating a big impact in the final half of the campaign if he stays fit.”

The Verdict: Big news…

Signed for £42 million last year, Romero could indeed be a major player for Tottenham over the remainder of 2021/2022.

His phenomenal campaign for Atalanta last season is a real indicator of his ability, with Italian football expert Conor Clancy calling Romero ‘one of the most exciting centre-backs in the world’ in an exclusive interview with The Transfer Tavern.

The 23-year-old also made an amazing 3.1 interceptions per 90 for Atalanta over 2020/2021 – far more than any Spurs player managed in that same season (WhoScored).

Indeed, if Romero can remain fully fit, he looks set to be a massive plus point for Conte.

Shakib shakes off the pox

It’s fair to say that Bangladesh have not enjoyed the ideal build-up to the first Test at Lord’s

It’s fair to say that Bangladesh have not enjoyed the ideal build-up to the first Test at Lord’s. For all that they competed above expectations in their recent home series against England, the prospect of negotiating England’s lively early-season surfaces is one that, when they last toured the country in 2005, was cited by the then-captain Habibul Bashar as the toughest assignment of his 50-Test career. To have any real hope of putting up a fight, therefore, the Bangladeshis would surely, at the bare minimum, require their star players to be at the peak of their form and fitness. Alas, the two men most likely to provide the inspiration for an upset have spent large swathes of the tour to date on the sidelines. Tamim Iqbal has been labouring with a wrist injury that may yet require surgery, while the captain, Shakib Al Hasan, has only just emerged from quarantine after contracting chicken pox.Shakib’s style since assuming the captaincy in the Caribbean last year has been to lead from the front in every respect, both on and off the field. So the enforced isolation, with only the occasional visit from those team members who were sure that they had contracted the illness in the past and were therefore immune, was far from the best preparation for such a daunting contest.”I’ve been kept away almost for two weeks,” said Shakib. “It was very hard, staying a whole day in your room. It was weird, and a bit frustrating when you’re not going with your team-mates for dinner or a practice session. You’re missing everything. It was very hard. But I’ve been talking and going out with all the guys since, and we’re feeling much better.”After two days of practice, Shakib is certain that he’s now over the worse, and can instead concentrate on the build-up to one of the undoubted highlights of a cricketer’s career. Only three members of the Bangladesh squad have previously played a Test at Lord’s – Mohammad Ashraful, Shadahat Hossain and the wicketkeeper, Mushfiqur Rahim – and Shakib can’t wait to lead his team through the Long Room and onto the field on Thursday.”It’s exciting for most of the guys, because only a couple of the guys have played here before,” he said. “If we take 20 wickets and our batsmen do their job, we have a fair chance [of winning]. But we need to stick to our basics and be very disciplined. England know the conditions much better than us. But we’ve been here for 15 days, so we’ve got very good experience of the conditions.”Though Shakib habitually talks a good game, he’s fooling no-one as to the scale of the challenge that awaits Bangladesh. As was the case back in 2005, they are running the misfortune of encountering an England side on the up, and once again, there’s the prospect of an Ashes series on the horizon to galvanise their mindsets. It may still be some six months in the distance, but the ambitious selections of Steven Finn and Eoin Morgan are evidence that the planning for the Gabba starts right here.On their own wickets, Bangladesh were able to keep England’s ambitions in check with a spin-heavy bowling attack, but that’s not a viable option this time around, especially with the need to incorporate an extra batsman to guard against the sort of batting meltdown that has undermined all too many of their 57 Test defeats.”The practice wickets have turned a bit, so we hope it will in the middle too, but we’ll have to change our tactics,” said Shakib, who implied that there would be a Test debut for the seamer Robiul Islam, who impressed with 3 for 72 in the nine-wicket defeat against England Lions in Derby last week. “We have got some very good fast bowlers, and we have a newcomer, who will be perfect for the future of Bangladesh cricket.”The Lord’s Test will also mark the return to action of an old-stager, Ashraful, who missed England’s recent visit due to a loss of form, but is sure to slot into the middle-order at a venue that he remembers from his last Test tour back in 2005. “Being at Lord’s is a very different feeling,” he said. “We don’t have any tour to the UK until 2020, so we are not sure whether we will get another chance to play here. Everyone is excited.”Ashraful’s career has been undermined by uncertainty, with too much advice and expectation constraining the natural ability that he demonstrated both on debut as a 16-year-old in 2001, but also back in 2005, when his memorable century was responsible for the humbling of Australia in a never-to-be-forgotten one-day victory at Cardiff. Now, however, he says he intends to jettison the angst, and just get back to striking the ball with all the confidence he can muster.”An England tour is challenging for most teams that come here, and even Australia lost two Ashes Tests last summer,” he said. “But I just hope to play a big innings to cement my place, and to do that, I have gone back to my old style. I used to be a strokemaker but over the last few months I tried to check my strokes. But it did not bring any benefit, so I’ve decided to go back to my natural game.”

Everton fans blast Kenny v Aston Villa

Lots of Everton fans were critical of the performance of Jonjoe Kenny in their 1-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday.

With Nathan Patterson unavailable and Seamus Coleman dropped to the bench, Kenny was left to play at right-back, and he seemed to struggle throughout the game up against both Lucas Digne and Philippe Coutinho.

The 24-year-old lost out on three of his duels and failed to make a single dribble, tackle or cross, while he also lost possession of the ball on 24 different occasions in total, the most out of any of his teammates (SofaScore).

He did not do enough to warrant keeping his starting place ahead of Coleman and Patterson, and Duncan Ferguson now has a selection dilemma to ponder ahead of Everton’s next match.
