Newcastle transfer news on Renan Lodi

Jacque Talbot has revealed that Renan Lodi is now ‘one to watch’ for Newcastle United on Transfer Deadline Day.

The Lowdown: Targett alternative?

It has widely been reported that Matt Targett could arrive at St James’ Park on loan from Aston Villa today, but in case they cannot get him, the Magpies will have other targets lined up for the left-back spot.

Dan Burn looks set to become their fourth signing of the January transfer window after Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood and Bruno Guimaraes, and with the majority of positions on the pitch covered, it looks as if left-back could be the next one to target.

The Latest: Lodi ‘one to watch’

As per Talbot, Atletico Madrid left-back Lodi is now set to be ‘one to watch’ for Newcastle going into Deadline Day, although he admits that a move for the Brazilian could be one for the summer, tweeting:

“Understand Renan Lodi is one to watch for Newcastle, who are looking for a left-back. Atletico want 40m euros.

“Might be one for the summer, though.”

The Verdict: Get it done

Money is not an object to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium, so paying €40m (£33.3m) for Lodi should not be a problem.

He is a left-back playing at the highest level, having helped Atletico to win the La Liga title last season, and he has played many times in the Champions League over the past three years.

The Brazilian is still only 23 years of age as well, and if he is up for the relegation fight, then he could be a shrewd last-minute buy for the new owners at Newcastle.

Sunderland predicted XI vs Cheltenham

Sunderland are back in League One action again on Tuesday night as they travel to face Cheltenham Town.

They are heading into the match without a permanent manager at the helm, with Kristjaan Speakman still in the process of sourcing Lee Johnson’s replacement.

Mike Dodds is set to take charge again in the meantime after overseeing the 2-1 defeat to bottom-of-the-table Doncaster at the weekend.

How many changes will he make to the team? Here is our predicted XI for tonight’s clash at Whaddon Road.

We are predicting that he will make four alterations to the team from Saturday, with Jermain Defoe, Jay Matete, Jack Clarke and Anthony Patterson all coming in.

It could be time for Patterson to be handed a start after some shaky displays from Ron Thorben Hoffmann between the sticks. The German has conceded some weak goals in recent weeks which you could argue that he should have saved, and Dodds may decide that he could benefit from watching on from the bench for this one.

In midfield, Matete could make his full debut in place of Corry Evans. The veteran scored in the defeat for Doncaster but Sunderland could go with youthful, energetic legs in Matete and Dan Neil due to the quick turnaround between matches.

On the right wing, Clarke may get the nod. He produced an outstanding three key passes in 29 minutes off the bench on Saturday, whilst Lynden Gooch managed two in 90 minutes. This means that the Black Cats could be better off starting the on-loan forward ahead of the American.

Finally, Defoe could come in for Elliot Embleton after the attacking midfielder struggled against Doncaster. The £5.3k-per-week gem has enjoyed a strong season, but his performance at the weekend left a lot to be desired. As per SofaScore, he lost six of his seven duels, missed one big chance and failed to register a single key pass.

The 22-year-old has four goals and four assists in League One this term but was unable to show the best of his qualities against Doncaster, which could now lead to him being axed. Defoe could therefore come in and play in a slightly different role as a support striker to Ross Stewart instead of as a traditional number 10.

We are predicting that the rest of the team will stay the same, with Carl Winchester, Danny Batth, Callum Doyle, Dennis Cirkin, Neil, Alex Pritchard and Stewart all keeping their places.

Liverpool fans not keen on Youri Tielemans

A number of Liverpool fans have reacted negatively to a transfer rumour claiming the Reds are interested in signing Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans.

Jurgen Klopp has had a quiet time of things in terms of midfield additions recently, with Thiago the last such player brought into the club back in September 2020.

Liverpool have struggled in the middle of the park at times this season, with the Spaniard one of several players unavailable far too often, along with the likes of Naby Keita, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott.

It would be a big surprise if midfield reinforcements don’t come in during the summer transfer window, and Tielemans could be a potential option.

According to journalist Sacha Tovelieri [via LFC Transfer Room on Twitter], Liverpool are one of the clubs looking at bringing in the Belgium international, who memorably scored Leicester’s winning goal in the FA Cup final against Chelsea last year.

Liverpool fans react to Tielemans claim

However, some Reds supporters don’t want to see Tielemans at Anfield, taking to Twitter to provide their thoughts on a player who they believe would not be an upgrade on Klopp’s current midfield options.

Perhaps some have been put off by the 24-year-old spending time on the treatment table this season, with potential fears of a recurrence in a position where there have been several casualties in recent months.

Naved-ul-Hasan eager to 'clear things' with PCB

Pakistan fast bowler Rana Naved-ul-Hasan has said he is ready to meet the PCB chairman Ijaz Butt to “clear things out” with regard to the one-year ban slapped on him by the board

Cricinfo staff23-Jun-2010Pakistan fast bowler Rana Naved-ul-Hasan has said he is ready to meet the PCB chairman Ijaz Butt to “clear things out” with regard to the one-year ban slapped on him by the board. Naved-ul-Hasan’s appeal hearing was postponed until June 26 and in the meantime he was asked to approach the PCB and request it to reconsider his punishment.”I am ready to meet the PCB chief to clear things out,” Naved told “I will respond to the PCB call immediately but so far I haven’t received any word since my hearing was adjourned on Saturday.”Naved-ul-Hasan, along with several of his team-mates, was punished by the PCB following the tour of Australia in 2009-10. He was banned for one year and slapped with a Rs 2 million fine. All the punished players, barring Naved-ul-Hasan, Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf, met the PCB and had their bans revoked, and fines lifted or reduced. Yousuf did not file an appeal against his ban because he had retired from international cricket.Younis’ situation, however, is unclear. His ban was reversed by the PCB but he was not selected in the Twenty20 or Test squads for the tour to England, which begins later this month. “As per order by Irfan Qadir [the arbitrator], we will send another showcause notice to Younus in a couple of days,” PCB lawyer Talib Rizvi said.Over the last couple of weeks the sense has emerged that the board will not let Younis back in unless he apologises for what they deem to be his mistakes, as the other returnees have done. Butt said last week that Younis’s return would require clearance from the board, an issue that wasn’t deemed to be an issue at all with Shoaib Malik, Shahid Afridi and the Akmal brothers.

Nazimuddin, Faisal put Bangladesh A on track

ScorecardBangladesh A worked themselves into a position of comfort thanks to fighting knocks from Nazimuddin and Faisal Hossain who capitalised on five-wicket hauls from Syed Rasel and Suhrawadi Shuvo. At stumps, Faisal held fort for the hosts, who were 64 adrift of first-innings honours, with an unbeaten 64 inclusive of six fours and four sixes, having realised 75 for the unbroken sixth-wicket with Saghir Hossain.Brendan Nash, who began the day on 64, held the key for West Indies A to aim for a 300-plus score. Bangladesh focused on prising wickets at the other end, and as on day one, it was down to Rasel and Shuvo to make the break-throughs. 26 runs had been added when Shuvo got Gavin Tonge to play back to him for a well-deserved five-for. Rasel responded promptly from the other end, packing off numbers 10 and 11, as Nash was left stranded one short of three-figures.Nelon Pascal accounted for Shahriar Nafees early to thwart the hosts’ reply before Mehrab Hossain and Nazimuddin steadied things. Mehrab had worked his way to 29 with five fours when Shane Shillingford got the better of him. Odean Brown then got into the thick of things, accounting for three wickets – two as a bowler, and one as a fielder – in the space of 13 overs. Raqibul Hasan offered a catch to Shillingford and Farhad Hossain was struck in front of the stumps to leave the hosts stuttering at 107 for 4. The big fish succumbed soon after, as Brown ran Nazimuddin out for a fine 72 off 123 balls, inclusive of 12 fours. The hosts’ hopes of securing a first-innings advantage looked bleak at that stage, but by stumps Faisal and Saghir had brought their side right back into the contest, leaving them with a good chance of dictating terms on Day 3.

Gayle questions batsmen's mindset

West Indies captain Chris Gayle pulled no punches in his assessment of the team’s failings, after they lost to South Africa by one run in the second Twenty20 international.

Chris Gayle, the West Indies captain, has questioned the batsmen’s mindset following his team’s one-run defeat in the second Twenty20 international against South Africa in Antigua. Gayle said they “have to look into themselves and try and redeem themselves as quickly as possible” after losing the series 2-0.”It is a pressure situation,” Gayle said. “The mindset is just not right. They’re maybe a bit too worried about the position.”South Africa finished with a modest 120 for 7 but West Indies struggled from the start, losing Gayle for a duck, and the rest of the batsmen never quite got going. With 15 needed from the final over, Darren Sammy managed two boundaries, including an all-run four thanks to some loose fielding, but Ryan McLaren held his nerve to leave West Indies a run short.”It’s blatant,” Gayle said. “It’s not right. We need to have discussions on it. The guys need to free up and go out there with a free mind to play some good cricket. We should have won that game…no doubt about it. To chase 120 runs, I don’t see why we shouldn’t get it, but we didn’t get it.”It was the second straight game in which the West Indies batsmen failed to perform. On Wednesday, they lost by 13 runs chasing 137 to win.”It’s very disappointing but credit must go to the bowlers. I thought they bowled well on an on-and-off pitch,” Gayle said. “In the end we allowed the run-rate to climb up a bit too much. We should have tried to take a few more chances.”He denied experience was the problem, saying, “We have quite a few experienced guys in the team, guys who have been in big situations before. Experience is not a problem.”The problem, according to him, lay with individual players, who need to start taking responsibility for their performances. “It’s up to the individual. They have to look into themselves and try and redeem themselves as quickly as possible. I can’t do it for them. I have a lot to think about as well. It is up to the individuals to try and get over these situations as quickly as possible.”In contrast, South Africa’s captain Graeme Smith was full of praise for his team’s ability to keep calm in the clutch, although he couldn’t resist a wry comment on the team’s history of coming up short in high pressure situations.”It was a bit tense at the end so we had to find somebody to remain calm, and Ryan kept a good sensible head, although we had a few guys running all over the place. It was an exciting finish, and nice again to get over the line,” he said. “We have performed well enough in tense situations like this before, although our record in such situations in competition play is quite poor, but we have performed really well again under pressure in a game that we probably shouldn’t have won, so it’s to our credit, and the confidence is definitely growing.”

Aleksandr Golovin keen on Newcastle move

An update has emerged regarding Newcastle United’s pursuit of Aleksandr Golovin from AS Monaco in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

According to Russian outlet MetaRatings, the Magpies are set to join Everton and West Ham in the race to land the 25-year-old’s services this month.

The report claims that the player is keen on a switch to St James’ Park, which could give them an advantage in their efforts to bring him in during the January window.

Cabaye 2.0

Eddie Howe must secure Golovin’s services, as he could find Yohan Cabaye 2.0 for Newcastle with a deal for the playmaker this month. The 25-year-old is a midfielder who can have a telling impact on games with his ability to make things happen in the final third.

The Russia international has enjoyed a strong spell in Ligue 1 and proven his quality at the top level in recent years. Since joining Monaco in 2018, he has produced 13 goals and 18 assists from a midfield position in the French league, with Golovin capable of playing in a number of roles across the middle of the park.

Last season, he managed five goals and nine assists in 21 Ligue 1 appearances (12 starts), averaging a goal contribution every 1.5 games. He averaged 1.7 key passes per match as he showed off his creative quality from midfield, regularly providing his team-mates with chances to score.

Niko Kovac, his former manager at Monaco, previously heaped praise on the talented Russian, saying: “Golovin is a fantastic player. For his first start since August, he’s scored three goals. He’s a world-class player. He delivers delicious passes. I know the quality of his passing. That’s why I asked him to take the free-kick that led to the third goal.”

In 93 games for Newcastle, Cabaye managed 18 goals and 14 assists for the Magpies, which shows that – like Golovin is for Monaco – the Frenchman was a midfielder who could score and create goals in the Premier League. He was also known to score some sublime free kicks from time to time, and Golovin has shown that he too can be a threat from a dead ball situation.

Therefore, the 25-year-old could be a terrific signing for Newcastle, as he has shades of Cabaye to his game and could be Howe’s midfield maestro for years to come, which is why the Magpies boss must try to get a deal over the line for him in the coming weeks.

Newcastle transfer news on Simon

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s (KSA) Public Investment Fund (PIF) are reportedly now in talks to sign Moses Simon for Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: Showcasing his talent

Simon recently showcased what he is all about at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) with Nigeria, with the country’s media describing him as the ‘star’ of their team, as he bagged a goal and assist in the tournament.

At club level, he plays for Ligue 1 side Nantes, and has scored twice and made a further six assists in the division so far this season.

In a recent interview, Belgian defender Jules Van Cleemput claimed that Simon has made him suffer the most out of any player in a game, describing him as ‘fast’ and a ‘real nightmare’ (RTBF via Pulse Sports).

The Latest: Offer made

As per Own Goal Nigeria, the St. James’ Park faithful have now made Simon their ‘prime target’ for the summer transfer window, and he will cost in the region of £20m.

They are currently ‘locked in talks’ with Nantes over a potential deal, who are ‘open’ to letting him leave after blocking a move to Leeds United in January.

The North East club have already offered him a salary of £100,000-per-week, which has put them in the ‘driving seat’ to sign the winger, and PIF have apparently been on his trail ‘for a while’.

They tried but failed to sign him for Saudi club Al Nassr, and want to move again to sign him this summer, this time for the Tyneside outfit.

The Verdict: Get it done

With a total of 61 goals and 51 assists for club and country combined over the course of his career so far, Simon would add another threat to the Magpies’ attack with his pace and trickery, and could combine well with fellow wide man Allan Saint-Maximin.

He is at a good age at 26, and the numbers quoted should not hurt PIF’s pockets too much.

Nonetheless, so long as they can avoid relegation from the Premier League, Simon is a player that can very quickly become another fan favourite for the Toon Army.
